Offending operator

Hi,
So I've created a document with 2 artboards each in size 297mm x 210mm. I've added texts and pure illustrator created vectors. I deleted the swatches pallette and added 13 Pantone C colors. Saved (after a days work) and accendentaly closed the file. When I try to reopen it it gives me this:
Can’t open the illustrator file. The illustration contains an illegal or misplaced operator.
Offending operator: inf
Context: % 2 () Ga 0 14 0 1 0.2 0 0 () 0 0 GA
% 4 () Ga 0 14 0 1 0.2 0 0 () 0 0 GA
% 2 Gt
% 1 0 3 -2 -1 Gf
% 0 O
% inf
I chose to open the file anyway and all the elements are gone. Pretty frustrating when you're working against a deadline. After panicing I opened the file in Acrobat, saved it as EPS and remade the file. This for some reason saving a EPS from Acrobat split the text fields in non understandable way?
Now, is there a way to get my file to work? Why does this happen and what can I do to provent this from happening?
I'm on a MacBook Pro 2013, 2,6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Thank you in advance!
/Chris

Chris,
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way.
Here is a website where you can see whether t can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,
http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
and another similar website,

As far as I remember, the former is for Win and the latter for Mac.

    Hello, good people. Please help!
I am working on a project that consists of one .ai file that contains 27, letter sized art boards.
I am using Adobe cs5-Illustrator on a macbook pro.
I have opened and closed and save this file many, many times—I have been working on this for the last 2+weeks.
Today, when I tried to open the file I received an error message that read: "can't open the illustration. the illustration contains an illegal operand. Offending operator '((((((((((((((((((((((( 1Gm
A screen shot of the entire message is below. Can anyone please help me to ward of this "offending operator?"
    Thank you in advance.

    AAhlene,
It is strange that the offending operation is not shown in context within the message.
Are you saving to your own harddisk( see below)?

External media: It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/illustrator-support-networks-removable-media.html
To have a network actually work may require some work.
If you transfer by external means it is always safest to zip/compress the file to avoid corruption.

  • Offending operator: 'er'  Please help...

Hello everyone.  I am new to this forum.  I have a project that is due ASAP.  I tried to open an ai. file this morning and I got the error message:

    Any thoughts?
I would really appreciate any help available on this.
    Thanks.

    Eddyhood,
Your file seems to be corrupted. The first question is: how much is recovered if you create a new document and place the file in it.
It may be possible to recover more, but that requires some work. The following TechNotes may give an impression; the former is general and explanatory, the latter deals with a specific case similar to yours.

  • Why do I receive Offending Operator Error when opening illustrator created charts??

I have created a pie chart in illustrator and after I save and close I receive Offending Operator errors when reopening and my chart information is gone.  This has happened to me twice between a six month period.  I thought it was just corupt files, but sure enough I am having the same issue when trying to create again.
Can anyone offer suggestions as to what i am doing wrong?

Illustrator abruptly closed my saved file and said it cannot open the illustration. It says it contains illegal operand. Offending operator: 1. #INF. Can anyone please help?

    What exactly did it do?
Crash while saving a file? That most probably ruins a file.
You can try and create a new Illustrator file, then place the old one in it. If that doesn't work, You might need to search for a backup.
    Don't have a backup?
Start using the (free) plugin Autosaviour, use Time Machine (or whatever your system offers as a backup software)

  • Illustrator CC graph file is opening with an "Offending Operator: inf" error.

Illustrator CC graph file is opening with an "Offending Operator: inf" error and then proceeds to open a file with half to all of the data and elements missing. How Do I fix that or can it be fixed? One in ten graph/chart file I do with Illustrator CC is opening like that. I can open the file in CS6 Illustrator but it flattens the file so that I lose all my data and layers. The full error reads like this:
    Offending Operator: ing
    Context:     % 0 1 0 0 0 Xy
                      % 4 0 Gx 6 Gr GX
                      % 1 -1 3 0 -1 Gf
                      % 0 O
                      % inf
Is this something with CC Illustrator graph tool, character styles or what?
Thanks anyone if you can help.

Same problem here, except now all my charts that have been opened and saved, since I first had this problem, no longer open correctly. I'm afraid to waste anymore time recreating multiple files and then have the same thing happen over again. I always save an Illustrator version with the editable data in the charts and then a PDF version for artwork placement. I noticed in the error alert it had one of the colors in the color pallet listed (Open Market Green). I opened the erroneous now blank file and tried removing the color from the pallet then save the file but that then caused AI to crash. When I try to open any of the AI (CC) files in 5.5 I'm unable to view the none PDF compatible artwork.

  • Offending Operator 'k' when opening .ai file in cs3

Hello, I was working on a vector illustration yesterday, sadly i spent nearly 7 hours on this one piece and to my surprise I was unable to open it the next morning.
Once I open the file in Illustrator I receive the following error:
    Offending Operator 'k'
    Context:
    /BasicFilter :
    (Fill Style Filter) 0 0 /Filter
    /Dictionary : /Notrecorded
    /FillStyle: 0 O
    k
I created and opened the file on the same computer, I am using Mac OSX with Adobe CS3. I have tried to "Place" the file in another .ai file, the problem is most of my work was outside the page so it's only showing a fraction of the work when i place the file or open it in another adobe program. Is there anyway I can recover this file?
    Thanks for your help,
    Arthur Kononuk

    Hey Mario,
Thanks for the tip, unfortunately I cannot locate a line with text that matches any of the phrases from that context. Does this mean my file is compressed? I have some hope left when I can open my file in acrobat and see all of the layers listed with the same settings left in tact. When ever I export, or try to open the files I get countless numbers of problems.
So far I've brought my file into a PC version of CS2 and was able to get the files left in my artboard. But like I stated before the part I need is outside of my artboard, I've actually even tried editing the hex to make my artboard bigger then open it in CS2 but it cuts off everything that is outside of the artboard.
I've read through some forums where people are able to point out what the postscript function is and fix the problem by changing the hex code... my problem is i dont know what 'k' means.
I can find a single ' k ' when i open my file up in textedit but when i remove it the file opens without error but the .ai file is empty.
Does anyone know what the postscript 'k' could indicate?
I've also tried putting the file in distiller to convert it to a .pdf, i get an error code but it seems generic,
I don't have the code at hand but it says something about
    &&obj
    stock
    0
    1
maybe that can give some more clue as to where the problem lies.
Anyways I greatly appreciate everyone who takes the time to read through my case and try to lend me a hand.
    Thanks,
    Arthur Kononuk

  • How can I recover a file that displays the error: Illegal Operand; Offending operator: ,

My file was closed without a problem and saved correctly. When opening I get the message: Illegal operand, Offending operator: ,  What can I do to repair this file? • Illustrator can't open an Illustration, and the Offending operator is {eps_metadata_stream}, However, there's no context. Help?

At my office, we've been using Shutterstock to get images. Recently we got some images to use for badge templates, and I've mass edited them in Bridge so that they'll have similar keywords and naming conventions. Now however, when I try to open specific files, the error pops up here:
I assume that through deleting some keywords and adding new ones in bridge, I've messed up the files.
I've tried looking around some forums, but I can't find my specific error, especially with there being no listed context...
I use both Bridge and Illustrator CC 2014. The files in question are all .eps files. They are all vectors downloaded off of shutterstock, during a 30 day subscription.
At the office we use Windows 7 computers.
Can anyone help me out? As we've been stumped on this one for a few days.

  • Illustrator CC is saving corrupt AI files. Can't reopen, saying there's an offending operator. What to do?

No issues when saving to EPS but i always forget doing it. So saves in AI can't be retrieved. Help Adobe?

Looks like you are adjusting Graph items with the Direct Select tool. Stop doing this. Keep a copy of the graph on a non-printing layer and move a copy to another layer, ungroup it and make your modifications to this copy. If you need to make changes to the data, use the non-printing copy to make the changes, copy it and move it to the ungrouped layer ungrouping it again and transfer the changes to the copy.

  • When saving down an Illustrator CC file to Illustrator 3 I am getting a meta data error. Any ideas how to fix this??

Unfortunately, I have a printer who is working on Illustrator 3 (Don't ask). Any work arounds that you know of that can fix this issue? I can save all of the way down to CS without issue, but anything prior is giving me the following message:

Is there something which is done wrong in illustrator to get this message ?
What can prevent this to happen, because unable to open the document, the document is blank when opened ?
    Thanks in advance !

We have tried both saving the files on our company server and on our individual desktops - neither of which will open the files.
Fonts are ok - they are all created and saved in CS6.
Printers, I believe are all correctly set up.
We tried a complete reinstall on one PC - still running into the same random files ending up 'lost' with the same error message.
Originally, the cs6 design standards (6 licenses total) were loaded to the server/shared drive and then downloaded onto each PC from there - we believe this may have something to do with the corruption, but this problem has just begun within the last month and the programs were all downloaded over 6 months ago.

  • HELP! Illegal operand error - can't open file!  (v.2)

I have a file that I've done about 40 hours on since last duplicating it. It's been saved multiple times, and successfully. Now, however the file seems to be corrupt. I'm getting the following error message when opening it:
Cant open the illustration. The illustration contains an illegal operand.
    Offending operator: ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( (((((((
After i last closed the file, i've defragged my hard drive because it's been sluggish. Ive also deleted a couple of random temp files that I'm now thinking may have been in regards to the Ai file. Does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to open this file (preferable) or anything else?
Thanks in advance for any help or info you can provide!

(ps-this is my second posting of this - frantically trying to fix this and didn't pay attention to what i was typing. i forgot to mention a few things so i just resubmitted rather than constantly adding messages. thanks for understanding ;)

First. Can't tell you how helpful this forum post/thread has been today. I successfully recovered two files that had "illegal operand" due to a corrupted Font, despite every Adobe tech support person writing me off – writing my files "gone".
Second. For anyone interested my "offending operator" was:
    %AI3_EndEncoding TrueType'
    Specifically, the context:
    [/_[-Andvari-]-Regular/[-Andvari-]-Regular 0 0 0 TZ
    %AI3_EndEncoding True Type
The did exactly as explained here (below, by Levitikon).

  • Excel 2013 crash - related to digital signature?

This is a cross-posting of a thread originally started in Microsoft Answers (Office- Excel) forum, advised to post in this forum by MS support engineer Mohan Suryanarayan (link to other forum: here).
I have a VB macro in file A (which otherwise contains only several Excel Tables with named ranges). My digital signature (for signing code) is attached to file A.
As the macro executes, the Open file dialog is called up so that the User can select a secondary file to open (file B or C).
Files B and C contain several sheets with formulas and Excel Tables, and also their own extensive VB macros. My digital signature is also attached to files B & C.
The remainder of the macro in file A simply executes an update of the Excel Tables in the secondary file, before saving & closing it.
I have been finding that during execution of the file A macro, Excel crashes and closes all open Excel files.
If I remove the digital signature from the secondary files then the macro in file A executes with no problem.
The macro was written in Excel 2007 and on a different laptop, with different digital signature, and used to have no problem at all. When a new laptop was purchased a new digital signature was obtained and placed into all of the files.
Execution of file A is a critical process - I need help with stopping the crash, while maintaining a digital signature in the secondary files (so that their own macros can execute).
Event Viewer error shows the following:
Faulting application name: EXCEL.EXE, version: 15.0.4667.1000, time stamp: 0x543d366c
Faulting module name: mso.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5447696f

    JL Latham replied:
Tom, all I can give you is relatively non-information.  I haven't experienced that type of behavior even in Excel 2013 with digitally signed macros in multiple workbooks.  But my digital signature is a commercial one from DigiCert, not
self-cert.  I'm not even sure what piece of Excel or Office processes the digital signature (that is, whether it is mso.dll or not).  But your whole process has more moving parts than most of mine involving multiple workbooks do - I quite often turn
off .EnableEvents when doing things like that just so event driven macros in the other workbook(s) do not execute.
Do the macros in the 'B files' have to execute during all of this processing in file A?  If not, have you tried turning interrupts off:
    Application.EnableEvents = False
before starting to work with the B-files?  Maybe something in them, such as a Worksheet_Change() or other event triggered process is messing things up?
If you do use  Application.EnableEvents=False, remember that you MUST re-enable that later in the code with Application.EnableEvents=True to get responses to things like button clicks, changes in a worksheet or other event driven processes
    to run 'normally' again.
Have you looked at this discussion:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-excel/excel-2013-crashing-immediately-when-attempting-to/ea2ab100-5525-4a0d-a3cf-6977319f954f
Sounds very similar to yours - original signature created in 2007, and crashing in 2013.  Some suggestions were made, but whether they fixed the issue or not is unknown: OP never came back and said "fixed it" or "didn't fix it".
    I replied:
In answer, the secondary B files don't execute any part of their macros during the A file process, and I hadn't included an EnableEvents = False within the file A code. However, I have just tried it to check if it made any difference and unfortunately it didn't.
I had read the thread you gave a link to before posting, and also the sub threads given within that one, but didn't see anything I thought of immediate parallel other than an Excel 2013 crash.
The way I read the linked thread was that a User added a signature in Excel 2007 and when they tried to open the file Excel (2007?) crashes, although other people using Excel 2013 can open it (not clear whether it means others can open the one with
the 2007 signature or without it).
Anyway, the differences in my situation are that:
    (1) my B-files were originally created in Excel 2007 on a different laptop to current and had their own signature attached. I maintain a 'stock' of B-file versions, some of which have the old signature and some the new. If I run the A-file macro
    on one of the B-files with the old signature then it executes ok;
    (2) I am able to open the B-files ok, no matter whether the signature in them derives from the old laptop with Excel 2007 or the new laptop with Excel 2013;
    (3) the macros within the B-files execute ok (this includes any versions of the B-files which still have an old signature attached, by removing the old signature and replacing with the new and executing on the new laptop);
    (4) the offending operation which triggers the crash (when the B-files have the new signature attached) is a Resize of the Excel Tables within the B-file. I understand that I may eventually have to find a workaround for this operation but initially
I want to sort out the signature issue (I'm reasonably sure the signature issue is not a red herring where the Resize is the 'real' problem).

  • Error message; need help ASAP!

    Hello,
I am on a G4 running System 10.4.11 and using Illustrator CS. I am currently working on a project and suddenly cannot open my file. I am getting the following error message:
Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains an incomplete or garbled object description. Offending operator: ";" Context: %2)[6",pbuU7L]~>
When I finished working on this file last night, it appeared to save successfully; it did not crash. I also copied it to my removable hard drive for my nightly back-up. That file has the same error message. However, both do preview when I click on them to open. Do I have any hope at all of opening this file again?
