Office 2004 not happy in 10.5.2

Hm, since updating to 10.5.2 and electing to reinstall Office 2004, including the new 11.4.0 update, I am now suffering with Word, Powerpoint and Excel doing lots of quitting shortly after launch or just hanging when a document is opened and requiring a force quit. All was well in 10.5.1. Any clues/cures? TIA.
Simon

having a different kind of office 2004 not happy in 10.5.2 (leopard) issue, not as severe but annoying enough to make me consider buying office 2008.
got macbook air, installed my good old office 2004. I dropped my old identity (MS database) in for entourage. it works actually quite well. the only thing is when in entourage i use japanese input mode (by putting the language settings on hiragana) now there is an annoying typing delay. you type, and it takes quite a while for the text to appear on the screen. also there is a bit of a time lag in windows opening (no relation to japanese issue)- sometimes they appear in parts. it happens only in entourage though not other office documents. i was suspecting the entourage identity database, but even after repairing it there's no improvement. on my old System 10.4, with the same version of office and the same database there was no such issue.
still, to exclude the database as a culprit now i'm trying out the reverse- putting the database i'm using in office 2004 on 10.5.2 back on a machine using office 2004 on 10.4. will report back.
anyone have ideas? would it be worth spending on office08(gulp)? does it run smoother on leopard altogether? i'm usually of the if-not-broken-don't-fix persuasion, but this seems a little broken... just would hate spending a lot of money on office08 and have no fix from it.
thanks.
maedi
PS: for those of you standing by to shower me with good advice on alternatives to entourage, waste not your time. i am aware of the alternatives, but there are just a few lovely entourage whistles i would not want to miss.

  • Why is my Office 2004 not supported anymore?

OS Lion should be the best system?! Why is my Office 2004 not supported anymore?

I don't need an Office update,
If you're running OS X 10.7 you do.
I just still like to use my old software.
If you llke old software and don't need new features (MS Office has made a lot of improvements in 7 years), then I do not understand why you upgraded OS X.
Office 2004 was now shut down by apple
No, Apple no longer supports PowerPC Apps.  There is nothing preventing M$ from releasing a free update to Office 2004 convering it to a Universal or Intel App.
they should inform also about the thkngs not workinv anymore.
    Apple did, 6 years ago:
The Apple–Intel transition was the process of changing the CPU of Macintosh computers from PowerPC processors to Intel x86 processors. The transition became public knowledge at the 2005 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), when Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs made the announcement that the company would make a transition from the use of PowerPC microprocessors supplied by Freescale (formerly Motorola) and IBM in its Macintosh computers, to processors designed and manufactured by Intel, a chief supplier for most of Apple's competitors.

  • ICloud Lion $29.99 MS Office 2004 not supported $$$

Holy Crap!  I joined iCloud feeling the clock ticking.  Then I learn I need the $29.99 OS upgrade to Lion to support iCloud and I oblige.  NOW, I learn MS Office 2004 is not supported!  Feeling a little baited here.  Can't open any of my .doc's!  Any advice before I go out and drop another C-note on software that worked to suit my needs a day ago!!!  Contemplating a timemachine restore, but then I'm back to iCloud > Lion $29.99....   ...and my iphone won't sync without iCloud, right?

Is there a free download to upgrade 2008 up to 2011?
    No
Office 2004 is 8 year old software developed at a time when Apple didn't use Intel processors. Don't you think an upgrade is more than justified?
Apple provided a free solution, Rosetta, that lasted up to Lion's release in Aug 2011.
In theory, Microsoft could have provided a free upgrade to support Intel processors in the Mac, but they chose not to do so. They chose to offer Office 2008, a profit making upgrade.

  • Microsoft Office 2004 Not Functional After OS X Lion Install

I have installed OS X Lion and MIcrososft Office 2004 for MAC no longer works.
I am aware that this was one of the errors with the software.
Might anyone have any idea when this might be resolved or if anyone knows how it might be fixable, feel free to comment as you would like.
    Thanks for your time.

It's not an error with Lion.  They said it would NOT support software for power PC  from the get go.  You'll have to update your MS Office software.

  • Own OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. MSOffice 2004 was taken out because of computer repair and now can't find disc to reinstall. But WANT the Office 2004, not Office 2011. Where can I find one and are all Officew 2004 the same

I own a OSX 10.6.8. IMAC with Snow Leopard. my MSWORD Office 2004 was taken off when computer was repaired and now can't find the disc to reinstall. Do not want the Office2011.. Where do I find the Office 2004 and are all Office 2004 choices the smae.

Hi Martha - Amazon offers office 2004 on their website.
    http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Office-2004-Standard-VERSION/dp/B0001WN0M2
That will be your best bet if you want to have office 2004 on your computer. Also, there are some different versions want to come to office. The link above gives you the standard version, but there's also the professional version. Now it sounds like that you do not want to upgrade to the latest office because you're most likely comfortable with how 2004 works. So in that case I would not spend the extra money and pay for the professional version unless you really need it. I see on the website there that if you buy a used copy it will only cost you around $10.
    Hope this helps!

  • Office 2004 not working in Lion

As the title says, but does anyone know if this verison is longer supportive in Lion and whether any recent version of office will work?
    Cheers,
    John

Office 2004 is a PowerPC application, and those are not supported in Lion.  Newer versions of Office will work fine.
Not that I know why anyone would want to go from Office 2004 to Office 2008 since newer versions of Office are available.  But just in case...  If you have Office 2008 installed, it would be fine after upgrading to Lion.  However, you cannot actually install Office 2008 in Lion.  While all of the Office 2008 applications are Intel compatible, for some reason, Microsoft chose to not upgrade the actual installer... so the installer required Rosetta.  Thats Microsoft for ya.

  • Microsoft office 2004 not working

Whenever I try to open any office applications they'll bounce on the bar a fe times but nothing opens. I've repaired the disk permissions and it didn't work. I downloaded the update but whenever I try to open it only almost starts but nothing comes up.

Classically this can be related to corrupt preferences. Go to Home > Library > Preferences You will see a bunch of files starting with com.microsoft., an application name, and ending in .plist Move one or more of these files (I don't know exactly what they all do and it appears there may be some general ones) to someplace other than that folder and try the application again. Note that if this works you can safely trash the file as it will be created again with default settings (so you may need to reset some of your preferences).

  • Problems installing Office 2004 on macbook

I've been trying to help a friend install Microsoft Office 2004 on her MacBook. When she enters the disc into the drive and goes to the setup assistant the assistant becomes unresponsive halfway through. When she tries to drag the MS Office 2004 file from the CD to the Applications folder, it works for a little and then stops, giving this message:
"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in batang.ttf could not be read or written. Error code -36"
Is that an error with the CD or the actual CD drive... any help would be greatly appreciated!

You might try repairing the permissions before running the installer.
I just installed Office 2004 not long ago and I remember the installer seemed to hang a bit. I'm not sure what the error code is but the batang.ttf is a font. It's possible that the part of you install disc is damaged in that area? Might try cleaning off the disc even if it looks clean.

  • Office 2004 could not be opend because you do not have sufficient access...

I just created a second user acount on my imac. I went to go and open microsoft word.
On the folder there was a little red circle with a line it it. I clicked on the folder and got this message.
The folder "Microsoft Office 2004" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges.
What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Select the folder in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, and change the permissions in the Ownership & Permissions section so that all accounts have read and write access to that folder. You may need to change the folder's owner to your account first; if so, change it back when you've changed the permissions. Changing the permissions on other items in this folder may be needed.

  • Iv'e upgraded my iMac to 10.6.8 and now microsoft office 2004 and my canon powershot camera software will not work. any suggestions?

I just upgraded my iMac to 10.6.8. Now my Microsoft office applications,(word, excel, ppt) and my camera software to transfer picts from my camera will not launch. (Separate apps but all stopped working as soon as I upgraded from 10.5.8). The software for the Canon Powershot is Ver.37.2. Image browser 6.2 EOS utility 1.1.  Any help would be appreciated.
Also if you could tell me what happens to the individual jpegs that get imported through iPhoto, I would go back to using that instead of the Canon software. I want to be able to go into a folder and see all the jpegs and not have to rely on iPhoto's one enormous file. What happens if that iPhoto file gets corrupt? Thanks, Leesha

Actually, Microsoft Office 2004 works fine with Snow Lepoard OS 10.6.x. However, it does require Rosetta, Apple's app for Classic apps. In your upgrade from Lepoard 10.5.8, Rosetta may not have installed but you can manually install it with the instructions here.
On another note, when upgrading the OS, some anomalies get resolved by repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
One more note, there was an issue with Rosetta crashing with OS 10.6.8 in February 2012. Apple released a security update that fixed it. You can see if Software Update (launch from the Apple menu) shows it or manually download Security Update 2012-001 v1.1 and install it. Software Update will also show other applicable apps available for updating for your upgraded system.
Rosetta is no longer available with OS 10.7 Lion and beyond. Then you will need to upgrade MS Office 2011 for Mac.

  • TS3938 I am not interested in updated software from MS. Is there another solution to removing Office 2004 completely?

Just upgraded to Lion and realize that MS Office 2004 is no longer supported. I am okay with that and not interested in a compatible version.
I went to use "uninstall"  and because Power PC apps are no longer supported this function does not work either.
Is there a way to remove it completely without upgrading?
    Thanks

  • Office 2004 will not uninstall

    Hi,
I'd like to install office 2008, so I'm firstly using the office 2004 uninstaller program to remove office 2004 - however it tells me it can't remove the installation of Office '04 as i'm not logged into the account that installed it - I've only ever had one account on my mac, and have never changed it, so now I'm stuck.
Does anyone know the list of files and folders that I can delete manually myself?
    Thanks,
    Seb

Oh sorry - even though it said it could not uninstall, all of the office files appear to be in the recycle bin

  • Replaced an older IMac that had OS snow leopard and could run microsoft Office 2004 for Mac. I'm told that this version of Office for Mac will not run on OS mountain lion. Is this true? or is there a workaround?

Just received a new Imac running OS10.8 Mountain Lion. I have MS Office 2004 that ran ok on OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. I'm told that this software will not work on the new OS. Are there any work arounds?

... and have only used Word and hate to try to learn something new if not necessary.
The dirty little secret that they are keeping from you, is YES, there is a way to continue to use Microsoft Office's Word 2004 in Mountain Lion!
It is to install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels 8 on your new Mac and then install and run Word 2004 there:
Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for $19.99 + sales tax & shipping costs at 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only). Parallels 8 retails for $79 but can be found for less searching for discounts on the internet.
Personally I hate the way Microsoft has changed Word 2008 and Word 2011, because I was 100% comfortable with how Word 2004 was setup and utilized.  There is a learning curve to both of these upgrades and a more steeper one to the "free" alternatives that were suggested to you.
In a perfect world, you should upgrade to Office 2011; I did (actually it was a gift, but the price was not an object for me anyway). But the world is not perfect...
So, if, like me, there are times that you are most comfortable operating in the Word 2004 environment, my suggestion offers you a easy, stable, relatively inexpensive means to continue to do so in Mountain Lion.
    GOOD LUCK!

  • "Not Enough Memory" Microsoft Office 2004 on Leopoard

I have installed Leopard on 4 computers, 2 imacs w/intel processors and a tower Dual G5. The application runs fine on the imacs but I can not launch the application on the G5 tower. The G5 tower has 4gb of ram and 75gb of free hard drive space on the drive where Office 2004 is installed. When I try to launch any of the Office Apps on the G5 Tower I get a "not enough memory" error. Any ideas on how to correct this?

I've read thru a number of forum discussion posts that the G5 seems to really have a problem with Leopard and Office. Its probably because its based on the IBM 970 chip and, perhaps, a general lack of support from Apple on it. I bet there isn't much software regression testing for this platform. Sorry, I wish I could be of help, but you guys might be faced with the vagaries of an end-of-life product.
My Leopard installation at times can be flaky on "wake from sleep" on my installation but other than that, its running fine with Office and Entourage. You might have to be patient until 10.5.2 is released and hopefully then they addressed your problems.
BTW, I've been told Office and Entourage is a memory hog. You might want to run "Activity Monitor" and see just how much memory it is actually using. I haven't seen it on my installation but maybe there is something unique about the G5 that uses an inordinate amount of memory.
    Good luck.
Oh, one last thing, you ran Microsoft update, right?
