Office 2004 not working in Lion

As the title says, but does anyone know if this verison is longer supportive in Lion and whether any recent version of office will work?
Cheers,
John

Office 2004 is a PowerPC application, and those are not supported in Lion.  Newer versions of Office will work fine.
Not that I know why anyone would want to go from Office 2004 to Office 2008 since newer versions of Office are available.  But just in case...  If you have Office 2008 installed, it would be fine after upgrading to Lion.  However, you cannot actually install Office 2008 in Lion.  While all of the Office 2008 applications are Intel compatible, for some reason, Microsoft chose to not upgrade the actual installer... so the installer required Rosetta.  Thats Microsoft for ya.

  • Microsoft Office will not work with Lion!

Have just installed Lion, now I can not use microsoft office (Word,XL,PPS), message says "POWERPC applications no longer supported" Any help appreciated.

Sounds like you are using Office 2004 or earlier and if so, as the error message provide indicates, PowerPC applications are no longer supported with Lion, and Office 2004 was witten for Macs with a PowerPC processor. The reason PowerPC applications worked on Macs with Intel processors prior to Lion was due to what is called Rosetta, which is no longer supported with Lion.
I believe Office 2008 or whatever the next version was after 2004 and Office 2011 is supported since these are witten for Macs with an Intel processor with OS X.

  • Microsoft Works (2004) not working on Lion

I have an old (2004) version of Microsoft Works and it does not want to run on Lion. I'm a teacher and dont have the money to buy a new version. What are my options? Should I just get rid of Lion?

Last February, Linux Journal did an in-depth blow-by-blow of M$ and OpenOffice.
The final result was that only the most arcane features of M$ were not duplicated "reasonably" in OpenOffice.
Only the PowerPoint equivalent suffered enough gaps to justify a "wait for OpenOffice to catch up".
Also, I use it and put it on the macmini I prepared for my stepmother who after 30 years decided a computer could be fun for typing letters.

  • Microsoft office 2004 not working

Whenever I try to open any office applications they'll bounce on the bar a fe times but nothing opens. I've repaired the disk permissions and it didn't work. I downloaded the update but whenever I try to open it only almost starts but nothing comes up.

Classically this can be related to corrupt preferences. Go to Home > Library > Preferences You will see a bunch of files starting with com.microsoft., an application name, and ending in .plist Move one or more of these files (I don't know exactly what they all do and it appears there may be some general ones) to someplace other than that folder and try the application again. Note that if this works you can safely trash the file as it will be created again with default settings (so you may need to reset some of your preferences).

  • I installed Lion and now my MS office will not work, is there a way to revert back my original software?

I installed Lion and now my MS office will not work, is there a way to revert back my original software?

Back to Snow Leopard from Lion install method
Read and print out these instructions, your computer is going to be offline and you wil be cutoff from help until your machine is restored.
Clear the Desktop, Downloads and Trash of anything you wish to keep by placing their files in the respective Documents, Music, Pictures, Movie folders.
If you have a TimeMachine drive, update it and disconnect for the duration of this restore time. It will be your second backup system and will have to be wiped and setup again after successfully going back to Snow Leopard if it was connected to the OS X 10.7 boot drive. If it wasn't, then leave it disconnected without updating to Lion.
Backup ALL your Users folders (Documents, Pictures, Movies, Music etc) manually (drag and drop methods) to a (not TimeMachine) external powered drive (HFS+ journaled formatted in Disk Utility) and disconnect, your going to be wiping the entire disk of ALL DATA. (warning, everything will be gone and not recovered)
    Here we go!
Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk that comes with your computer and second screen in just STOP.
Look at the Utilities Menu for Disk Utility.
On the left is the name of your hard drive maker, click it and Erase (format HFS+ Journaled), give it the same name as before, and click Erase...
This should wipe the drive of ALL partitions (GUID, OS X and 10.7 Recovery, Windows if present)
When it's done, quit and install OS X 10.6. Then install all your programs from fresh sources and validate/update.
When you setup a first account, use the same user name as before, this way you can simply drag and drop the content of your previous Users folders from the external drive right back into the new Users folders and everything should work peachy. Links in iTunes to music, playlists and iPhoto links especially.
Update OS X to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update for best results.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
(Note: If your original machine had 10.5 and you want the free iLife that comes with the disks with the computer, then you'll have to install 10.5 first using the same c boot/erase/format methods as above, then update to 10.6 via the disk, then Combo Update 10.6.8)
Final step optional but highly receommended.
A lot of people use a Carbon Copy Clone of their boot drive to a HFS+Journaled external drive as a "hold the option key" bootable backup in case something goes wrong with their boot drive or need to restore to a previous OS X version..  (in addition to TimeMachine drive for more immediate backups.)
It's not advised to have a Bootable Clone and a TimeMachine partition on the same external drive, as two drives gives hardware protection in case one fails.

  • My Microsoft Office 2004 stopped working after upgrading to MT.  How can I get it to work, or, how can I uninstall MT?

My Microsoft Office 2004 stopped working after upgrading to Mountain Lion.  How can I get it to work again, or, how can I uninstall MT?

Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Why is my Office 2004 not supported anymore?

OS Lion should be the best system?! Why is my Office 2004 not supported anymore?

I don't need an Office update,
If you're running OS X 10.7 you do.
I just still like to use my old software.
If you llke old software and don't need new features (MS Office has made a lot of improvements in 7 years), then I do not understand why you upgraded OS X.
Office 2004 was now shut down by apple
No, Apple no longer supports PowerPC Apps.  There is nothing preventing M$ from releasing a free update to Office 2004 convering it to a Universal or Intel App.
they should inform also about the thkngs not workinv anymore.
    Apple did, 6 years ago:
The Apple–Intel transition was the process of changing the CPU of Macintosh computers from PowerPC processors to Intel x86 processors. The transition became public knowledge at the 2005 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), when Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs made the announcement that the company would make a transition from the use of PowerPC microprocessors supplied by Freescale (formerly Motorola) and IBM in its Macintosh computers, to processors designed and manufactured by Intel, a chief supplier for most of Apple's competitors.

  • Is it true MS Office doesn't work with Lion?

I just purchased OSX Lion and while it was downloading I began to read the reviews.  I saw multiple comments that MS Office doesn't work with Lion.  I forced a shutdown on my MacBook Pro because I couldn't see any other way to stop the LIon download.  Now with it back on, the download is paused.  I don't want to resume it until I find out if it's true about office.  Any help?

Len , MS2008 does require Rosetta. Ms2011 does not.
W7ox, I tried 2 different licenses. I have 12 licenses here on site. I resorted to reading it straight off the box and still no joy. Very strange!
Incidently. I can not access the Snow leopard Server either via the normal 'Go' and 'connect to Server'.
Have tried afp and SMB. no joy.
I am wondering if the ethernet Dinlge adpater to the Rj45 connector has any hardware issues?? will keep expeirmenting and any feedback appreciated, as I am NOT going ahead with any Lion updates on 12 macs until I know more about its bugs! ciao

  • Office 2004 not happy in 10.5.2

Hm, since updating to 10.5.2 and electing to reinstall Office 2004, including the new 11.4.0 update, I am now suffering with Word, Powerpoint and Excel doing lots of quitting shortly after launch or just hanging when a document is opened and requiring a force quit. All was well in 10.5.1. Any clues/cures? TIA.
    Simon

having a different kind of office 2004 not happy in 10.5.2 (leopard) issue, not as severe but annoying enough to make me consider buying office 2008.
got macbook air, installed my good old office 2004. I dropped my old identity (MS database) in for entourage. it works actually quite well. the only thing is when in entourage i use japanese input mode (by putting the language settings on hiragana) now there is an annoying typing delay. you type, and it takes quite a while for the text to appear on the screen. also there is a bit of a time lag in windows opening (no relation to japanese issue)- sometimes they appear in parts. it happens only in entourage though not other office documents. i was suspecting the entourage identity database, but even after repairing it there's no improvement. on my old System 10.4, with the same version of office and the same database there was no such issue.
still, to exclude the database as a culprit now i'm trying out the reverse- putting the database i'm using in office 2004 on 10.5.2 back on a machine using office 2004 on 10.4. will report back.
anyone have ideas? would it be worth spending on office08(gulp)? does it run smoother on leopard altogether? i'm usually of the if-not-broken-don't-fix persuasion, but this seems a little broken... just would hate spending a lot of money on office08 and have no fix from it.
    thanks.
    maedi
PS: for those of you standing by to shower me with good advice on alternatives to entourage, waste not your time. i am aware of the alternatives, but there are just a few lovely entourage whistles i would not want to miss.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS5 is not working with Lion.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 is not working with Lion. It is totally non responsive to a point where i cannot work. all other CS5 programs seem to be running well so far. any advice? if no, then how do i revert back to Snow leopard?

I had real problems with all Adobe apps - it said I needed to install a version of Jave Runtime, but kept saying that I wasn't connected to the internet to complete the action. This was not the case - I was connected to the internet.
I followed this link : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1421  to install a version of Java and all Adobe apps fire up now. Haven't done much testing within the apps, but at least I'm further ahead than I was.
So thanks to the message boards for helping me out.

  • Ukelele generated custom keyboard layouts not working in Lion?

I asked this question in the stackexchange site a few days ago.  Nothing I've tried has worked so far, except for creating a new account.  Because a fresh account works, it's got to be something with my preferences, right?
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/21691/ukelele-generated-custom-keyboard -layouts-not-working-in-lion
    Here's the question from above:
I created a custom keyboard layout with Ukelele (http://scripts.sil.org/ukelele) in Snow Leopard (idea is to generate scandinavian letters with Alt-key, otherwise have a pretty much standard U.S. layout). After the upgrade, the old installed (to ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts) layout wasn't working.
Ukelele seems to work OK in Lion, but whether I put the generated keylayout in a bundle or single file, or save it "/Library/Keyboard Layouts" or "~/Library/Keyboard Layouts" doesn't seem to matter.
    Help?
    EDIT:
@Sergio, I cannot choose the layout in Input Sources. One keylayout file I tried:http://semeai.org/~sjl/us-scands.keylayout
    [EDIT: Removed unrelated stuff]
    UPDATE 2011/08/15:
    @Tom:
Copied your keylayout (it naturally ended up in my Junk folder):
    midgard (01:55) >ls -l ~/Library/Keyboard\ Layouts/MongolianQWERTY.keylayout-rw-r--r--@ 1 sjl  staff  44536 Mar 13  2008 /Users/sjl/Library/Keyboard Layouts/MongolianQWERTY.keylayout
Logged out, logged in, isn't showing in Input sources (I'm looking very closely between "Maori" and "Myanmar - QWERTY").
I've also uninstalled bunch of software and plugins giving suspicious messages to system.log, but hasn't helped.
    UPDATE 2011/08/16:
I created a test account, and lo, the layout works perfectly for it. Also the bug in preferences doesn't show for that account. When trying this on my own account, there are no errors in Console logs with the suggested keywords (I can't seem to locate console.log file, though).
    UPDATE 2011/08/16 later:
Nuking Library/Caches (and relogging) didn't help.
    UPDATE 2011/08/17:
    I did
    % find Library -name "*.plist" -exec mv {} {}.renamed \;
and restarted, but it didn't help. I restored the situation with
    % for file in `find Library -name "*.plist.renamed"`; \  do mv "$file" "${file//.renamed/}"; done
addendum: I also went through all the .plist files with plutil -s as described inhttp://www.askdavetaylor.com/can_i_check_my_plist_files_in_mac_os_x_for_problems .html. There was some brokennes, but in very unrelated applications.

    Tom,
    I think I love you.
That absolutely did it! Thanks so much!
If you'll answer with the same link in the stackexchange site, I'll mark the answer as correct, so you'll get the rep there.
    Thanks,
    Sami
