Office 2008 crashes after 10.6.5 install

I just upgraded a computer from 10.5.8 to SL 10.6.5
Everything is working fine except the Office 2008 suite. All the application crash at the splash screen. They all start fine if I start in safe mode. I've cleaned up the fonts, deleted all startup files, run permission repairs, reinstalled...
any other ideas?

Must be specific to problem with your installation of Office 2008. I have both 2008 & 2011 on my machines (iMac and MBP) both work fine on 10.6.5.
First thing I'd do is check to see if there are any updates of 2008 you may have missed. The most current release is 12.2.7. If you want to check what version you have go to the Applications-Office 2008 folder and click one of the Apps (I chose Excel) and click Command I. Under the General area it will say what version you have. If you have a version prior to 12.2.7 then go to Microsoft's web site and locate the most recent update download and install it. Then restart the machine and try to launch 2008.
If that doesn't do it then I'd recommend posting to the MS Office forum located at:

All apps in Office 2008 Crash with Snow Leopard. This is the only problem I am having since the upgrade. How can this be fixed?

    Hello,
you don't write what kind of crash you are facing. The one I met was that after launching any of office programs it hanged on splash window, telling "Optimizing menu font performace".
I found a problem in FontBook - a lot of fonts had a yellow warning triangle there. When I clicked "Resolve duplicates", almost all my fonts were moved to trash (and Office started OK). I believe the updates I made from Tiger, to Leopard to Snow Leopard, mixed with installation of MS Office fonts made this mess.
I took the whole /Library/Fonts folder from another computer and replaced my broken Fonts folder on this computer. Reboot and all works fine.

  • PS crashes after aborted Lightroom 4 install.

PS crashes after aborted Lightroom 4 install. I have an iMac on OSX 10.5.8 running CS5. I recently tried to install Lightroom 4 and did not realise my OSX is too old. Therefore it crashed. Now PS will not start and I keep getting an error. If I have to repair or uninstall/reinstall, how do I save my workspace settings? Is there a way to repair without doing an uninstall/reinstall?

Thanks.  This is the Apple error report generated after PS fails to launch:

  • After upgrade to Lion, Powerpoint (Office 2008) crashes!  But I found a solution.

    1.  After I upgraded to Lion, my Powerpoint (Office 2008) would load, but when I tried to run the slideshow, it would crash and I got the same error messages that other users have posted.
    2.  I found that I could move a presentation from a flash drive, I could view the slides and make changes to slides, and even run the slideshow, but if I saved the presentation, when I tried to run the slideshow, it crashed.
    3.  After some experimentation, I found that I was saving the presentation using Powerpoint format (.ppt).  If I did a "File Save As" and changed the Powerpoint file format to (.pptx) the presentation would run properly.  There is a scary black screen while the presentation loads but after that it works properly.
    4.  This may explain why so many users are reporting different experiences with Powerpoint after the Lion upgrade.
    Hope this helps,
    GS KLIVANS

Bless you, Mr. Klivans. I have a 2-day workshop to give starting the day after tomorrow and spent most of the night trying to fix this. I hate the PowerPoint 2011 presenter view and 2008 kept crashing. Grrrr. Your response absolutely solved the problem. Thank you SO much.      Lynne

  • MS Office 2008 crashes with Snow Leopard

Since installing SL on my mac, ms 2008 word and excel crash all the time.
    ??? Help

I had similar problems - none of the Office 2008 applications would load after I upgraded to SL, and they seemed to be tied to the font book application.
Here's a response that I got from Microsoft support:
Based on your email, after updating to Snow Leopard the Office applications are not opening freezing at the Optimizing font menu.
The first steps you have done for deleting the font cache and Office preferences usually resolve this sort of issue. I have seen it work best when we are booted into the safe boot.
I would like to boot the computer into safe boot, delete the preferences again and then try opening Office while still in Safe Boot.
We have to start your Mac in Safe Boot; here are the steps:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Press the power button.
    3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the SHIFT key.
Note: The SHIFT key should be held as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone. However, do not press the SHIFT key before you hear the startup tone.
    4. Release the SHIFT key when you see the grey Apple and progress indicator on the screen. The progress indicator looks similar to a spinning gear.
    5. During the startup, you will see the words "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
    a. If the Mac OS X is configured to startup to the login screen, log on as the user who is running the Office for Mac software. Otherwise, skip this step.
    b. Immediately press the SHIFT key. This will bypass any startup items in the Startup Items folder.
I would like to try to trash the Office preferences, here are the steps:
Please quit all Microsoft Applications before beginning. Any custom preferences will be set back to default. Also any custom dictionaries or auto correct settings will be deleted. Please let me know when you have a custom dictionary, then we can get this file from your trash and move it back to the Preferences folder.
    1. Click on the Hard Disk
    2. Click on "Users"
    3. Click on the folder with your user name (house symbol)
    4. Click on "Library"
    5. Click on "Preferences"
    6. Drag any files starting with "com.microsoft" to the trash (don't empty the trash)
    7. Drag the "Microsoft" folder to the trash (don't empty the trash)
    8. I would like you to restart the computer again into safe boot
To get back to a regular boot, just restart the Mac, go to the Apple and choose to restart the Mac.
In reality, I found the the solution was to Validate fonts and delete all duplicate or identified damaged fonts. Once I did that and applied the Microsoft advice above, the Office applications loaded fine.

  • Acrobat 9.0 Pro and Office 2008 updates download but won't install

I hope I'm not alone experiencing the following difficulties installing third party patches and updates and that someone who reads this may recognize the problem…and its solution. I've run Adobe Updater (6?) for CS4 Design Standard which includes Acrobat 9.0 Professional, and subsequently, Microsoft Autoupdate for Office 2008 v12.0.1, but find that neither will install the downloaded updates which disappear immediately after an (unsuccessful) installation attempt.
Disk space is not a problem (500GB HD) nor is memory (4GB RAM); I'm using OS 10.6.4 (10F569) which is the most current set of OS updates I can locate. I had successfully been running CS4 with Adobe's most recent patches (e.g. P'Shop 11.0.2 and Acrobat 9.3.3) until the 9.3.4 patch failed to install with the message that +"Safari and Acrobat apps must be closed in order to proceed"+—they were closed as was everything else that wasn't essential according to a check of the Acitivity Window. A grab of the alert panel reads:
+"AcroProUPd934_all Update Failed: The Patch has failed because the application has been modified since it was originally installed (for example, plug-ins may have been disabled). Please go to the Adobe support website for more information regarding how to re-enable disabled components prior to installing the patch, or you can uninstall and reinstall the application, and then reinstall the patch."+
Of course, uninstalling CS4 and reinstalling the entire suite of apps reverts all of them to their original versions, now none of them will accept an update…whether manually downloaded and fed to it or by using Adobe's most recent AutoUpdater. The most consistent message is an alert panel stating that in order to continue, Safari and Acrobat applications must be closed—which they are.
Not surprisingly, after nearly 8 hours on a cell phone with Adobe Tech Support in Delhi, 5 different techs and a manager, the case remains open a week later; it seems +"no one has ever seen or heard of this problem before"+ and an overly apologetic manager could only repeat +"it's [Adobe] policy to remove all copies of CS4 from existence once CS5 is introduced."+ While we waited for 500MB of updates to download more than once, a helpful tech suggested I'd have more luck finding a used copy of CS4 on the net than getting a link to another download from Adobe.
With regard to Microsoft Office 2008, I'd been running v12.0.1 and the MS Autoupdate app has tried to download and install v12.1.0 (and those which follow) but when installation is attempted, an alert panel reads:
+"There is a problem with the Office database. Office might be unable to access the data base or the database file might be damaged. Without the database, you might be unable to use the Address Book, Scrapbook, and other features that store your personal information. To rebuild the database, Open Microsoft Office 2008/Office, and then open the Microsoft Database Utility. For more information, open the Database Utility application, and on the Help menu, click Database Utility Help."+
All attempts to rebuild the database fail, noting…
+ERROR: Failed to open database [Head]+
    +ERROR: Corruption opening database [16003:""]+
    ======================
    +Scan Ended+
    ====================
Two hours on the phone with a relentlessly pleasant Nova Scotian tech for Microsoft revealed little but the suggestion that +"the app doesn't seem to be able to recognize your hard drive. I've never seen this problem before."+
With luck, perhaps someone reading this far recognizes the issue and can offer a solution? It will be gratefully received! Thanks,
    David

Disk space is not a problem (500GB HD)
How much space is available out of the 500GB?
Have you tried any of the following:
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and try the installations again.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 crashes when printing since upgrading to Yosemite

Ever since upgrading my Macbook Pro (late 2009) to OS X Yosemite I'm having trouble with Microsoft Office 2008. Whenever I try to print from any of the Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), the program will crash and the file will not print. I am still able to print from other programs (Safari, Preview, etc...). And aside from this I'm having no other issues with the Office programs. So at the moment I'm reducing to having to save files as a PDF and then printing from Preview. Can anyone help me troubleshoot?

I'm not sure if the printer driver is updated, it usually does that automatically...
That sounds magical but I have never had printer drivers automatically update themselves. After your upgrade to Yosemite, did you setup your printer using Print & Scan in System Preferences?
...office programs are the only ones crashing when I try to print, so wouldnt that indicate an Office issue rather than a printer driver issue?
No, not necessarily. See thread "microsoft office crashes when trying to print."
If you believe the your problem is an "Office issue" then you might try the Microsoft forum.

  • MS Office 2011 prevents my Mac to stop... can I remove it but maintain my Office 2008? (I have both versions installed)

    Hi all,
MAC OS X Leopard... I installed Office 2011 with a University license. Now after some months it is no more working and it prevents my Mac to stop...
I want to uninstall Office 2011 but maintain my Office 2008 installation that is still properly working.
I found a terrible Support Note from Microsoft, and I do not know what it will happen to Office 2008. Any suggestions that make it easy and safe?
Thank you very much in advance
    Kind regards
    Chiara

Hello, I have no experience with MS products sine the '90s, but open Activity Monitor, choose show all Processes, does MS or Office show anything using CPU% when 2008 isn't open?
Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

  • Has anyone else had Windows Explorer or MS Office products crash with the eLearning suite installed?

I'm running Captivate 6.0.1. I frequently experience Microsoft Windows Explorer crashing or any of the MS Office products crashing as well (Word, Office, etc). Our office is running Windows 7. I'm the only person in our 250+ employee organization who experiences this problem but I'm also the only one with Adobe eLearning Suite Installed. Our I.T. dept has even rebuilt my machine from a clean install and the problem is still there. I'm not sure if it's Adobe related but that's what I suspect is the problem. Any one have any ideas or has this happened to anyone else? Thanks. BTW, there are 2 other staff here that have Captivate installed but not the full e-learning suite and they don't have this problem.

    Hi There,
    Welcome to Adobe Forums.
There is no such known issue that eLearning Suite installation is crashing MS Office or other Microsoft products.
    Please try this:
    1) If you are connected in a domain then first logon to a local admin account or in the built in administrator account.
    2) Disable the third party services and startup items on the computer as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 and after restarting the computer install eLearning Suite.
    3) If eLearning Suite and MS Office or other Microsoft products work fine together then enable the services and startup items and restart the computer. Check again.
Please let me know if that helps.
Also let me know if you have anyother Adobe product installed in the computer.
    Thanks
    Vikas

  • Mac OS 10.6.7 Server, Safari Keeps Crashing (after failed FileMaker Server install)

    Mac OS 10.6.7 Server
After several attempts of installing, uninstalling FileMaker Server 11.
(FileMaker Server 11 still will not launch, Admin Console)
    Now totally un-installed
Safari constantly crashes a few minutes after launch.

I think it is due to the Java update that either comes with 10.6.7 or was released just before 10.6.7 so is probably included in the 10.6.7 update anyway
    Try this
Open Java Preferences (use spotlight to find it)
Check what version of Java your computer is using for both the options it should be "Java SE 6 64bit" at the top of both lists  click it and then click options and what is the version number 1.6.0_15, 64bit (this version works)
if you have version 1.6.0_24 i have found it wont work
I had this happen with 10.6.6 with the java update and ended up reinstalling the whole server as i thought it was something else causing the problem I have since not installed the java update from reading some info on the filemaker site and then still haven't installed 10.6.7 in case.
Not sure how you can backdate the java version perhaps check the sun website (or is it oracle now) to see if you can install an older version
Whatever version is at the top of the list will be used so if you can drag an older version to the top and then restart you should be fine.

  • Office 2008 CRASH

I installed Snow Leopard yesterday on my MacBook. Since then I can't open Word, Excel or Powerpoint !!! ARG !!!!!

If you haven't found an answer that works for you, try what I did. Be patient and you'll get a working Office 2008 without having to downgrade to Leopard (10.5) or rely on a complete reinstallation of your system.
First: Delete anything and everything Microsoft (except your actual data/databases)
Second: Use your favorite Font Management Tool (I used Font Book) to identify and delete all duplicate fonts. Make sure you leave the fonts located in \System\Fonts folder alone. Its not enough to just make them inactive you must remove the duplicates from your system. Log out and then back in.
Third: Reinstall Microsoft Office 2008 and ALL updates. DO NOT LAUNCH any Microsoft Apps other than the installer/updater during this process.
Fourth: This is important - Launch Activity Monitor
Fifth: Launch Microsoft Word. While Word is opening pay attention to the Activity Monitor. Look for "FontCacheTool." This is the process that is causing the hang when Microsoft apps launch. Use Activity Monitor to kill the process.
Sixth: Word, Excel, Entourage, and PowerPoint should now open successfully and you are ready to go.
Let me know if this helped you.

  • Office 2011 crashed after update to 10.9

After the update to 10.9 on a lot of Macs office 2011 crashed on right klick (context menu) in word, excel and powerpoint. . I tried everything, but the only solution is to use a new user account, then office works perfect.
I had the issue today on 5 Macs. Before update office worked fine, so it seems that apple made a big mistake in 10.9 update. I hope that there will be another solution from apple, soon.

Perhaps this is a fonts issue, try this
         1. Open Font Book in Applications.
         2. Select all fonts,
         3. Under File in the Menu bar select "Validate Fonts”
If this doesn't help, I've read that this might help
         1. In Finder, GoTo /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MERP2.0
         2. double-click “Microsoft Error Reporting” to launch program
         3. In Preferences, uncheck “Enable Microsoft Error Reporting”

  • Microsoft office 2008 crashes.

    Hi,
I was thinking about getting a new macbook and wanted to buy Microsoft Office 2008, but I have heard from a few reviews that it crashes sometimes. Is this true and does it crash often?

My first programming professor had a sign on his office door:
program: noun - a house where bugs live.
In the last 30 years, nothing has changed. Yes, Office has bugs and it sometimes crashes. Office 2008 is still young in its development cycle. Any version X.0 product was certainly released to the public at least several weeks if not several months too early. When it becomes a version X.1 product the worst of the bugs have been removed with the exception of the really intractable ones that have bedeviled the programers from day one. At X.2 the product is stable except for a coterie of bugs that are annoying a vocal minority. At X.3 (if not X.2) the developer feels confident enough about the product that a few features that had to be scrapped to make the delivery date are added. This, of course, brings with it some new bugs. And so on....
In the initial release I found Word to be very crash prone on my otherwise rock solid system. The first update cleared up most of the problems and since the second update in August, I can't remember crashing Word. I haven't used Excel much since I need macros for the files I run - I'm still using Excel 2004 for the most part.

  • Entourage (Office 2008) crashes

Since upgrading earlier today to OS X 10.6.3, Entourage freezes, have to force quit. Word, Powerpoint and Excell all seem OK. Have seen some discussons on other web forums, looking for the Mac/OS X perspective.
A potentially unique aspect is that this involves my wife's computer. For years she has refused to delete any email messages. (No lectures, please. She has had them from me.) She hopes the fix will retain the ~1,200 messages in both her inbox and sent mail file. The inbox messages apparently are retained on her server (Comcast), but not sent messages.
Looking for recommendations. Also, since this seems to be a common problem, presumably a fix will be coming, in an Office 2008 update, or from Apple, or both. Has anybody heard anything?
    Thanks-- HHHMD, Seattle

I would presume Microsoft would issue a fix if there was one - it's their software even though it's running on Macs. Is there any way to report problems to Microsoft through the program like with Apple's software? (For example in many Apple programs you can report bugs to Apple).

  • Office for Mac 2008 crashes after Mountain Lion upgrade

I've just upgraded to Mountain Lion and now Microsoft Office for mac 2008 won't work. Every time I try and open any of the apps it produces a Microsoft error report message.
Any ideas as to why & how I might fix this, please?
    Thank you!

that's strange as I pasted in a screen grab.
I think I have managed to solve the problem having explored other discussions on here. I restored to standard fonts in my Font Book and it all now seems to work. Hopefully!
    Thanks for your support.
(PS, pasted graphics won't work, if you ever need to know how to post a picture here just ask)
