Office 2008 icons

I wonder why my Office 2008 icons are monochrome rather than blue for Word, green for Excel, etc. How can I make them colorful again?

Hi mbp233;
Since Office 2008 is a Microsoft product, you might get better results ask them.

  • Office 2008 Mass Deployment

I may be posting this in the wrong area and I will apologize in advance. I work in a school district that has recently decided to upgrade ever single machine to Office 2008 and we have a deadline to have it done by the beginning of the next school year. Sitting there with and install disc and going to every machine and installing 2008 and running the updates is not going to allow it to be done in the allotted time. I have been googling and found a howto over at Mactopia that helped me create an install package with the updates incorporated already and it works awesome. Now the actual problem and question. The install package that I made does not delete Office 2004 nor does it put the icons in the Dock for Office 2008. Which is going to be required for the teachers and students. I need to figure out how to make the package that will allow me to delete Office 2004, install Office 2008 with all updates, and put the Office 2008 icons in the Dock. Then I would be able to push this package out over ARD this summer when no one is in the building and be able to make the deadline. Thanks in advance for any advice you can contribute

What software are you using to make the packages? If Packagemaker you should consider posting your question in the Developer forums, as it's more of a developer tool:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=164
Personally, for the uninstall of 2004, I'd just send a separate Unix command before pushing the package out to delete the Office 2004 folder.

  • Help with Archive & Install - Office 2008 gone?

I just performed an "Archive & Install" with "Preserve" checkmarked. When I rebooted, my dock had question marks where the Office 2008 icons were (Word, Entourage, etc). Office 2008 is not in the Applications folder anymore. I thought A&I only replaced the system files - and left others (Apps) intact? Could there be some other reason 2008 disappeared? Can I just Restore the Office Folder and Identities from Time Machine? Thanks in advance!

Archive and Install is usually the safe way to go with OS upgrades (and the way I have mostly gone on all my Macs over the years).
As Dimaxum suggests, fist looking for the Office applications on your hard drive.
Personally, I would use either Spotlight (first) or EasyFind (free from DevonTechnologies) to search for "Word", "Entourage", "Office 2008" names. And if you find the main Office 2008 folder, drag it to the new Applications folder.
As well, if you find the Preferences folder for Office and it is not yet in your (new) User/Library/Preferences, then drag that into there as well.
As V.K. suggests, it is always possible to reinstall from your source disk, assuming that you have it.
And the unspoken bit of knowledge here is that Microsoft allows people to initially install MS Office by EITHER drag and drop the folder from CD to your HD Applications folder, OR by running the MS Office installer from the CD. (And they do not tell you which or why to pick one method over the other!)
I have used both ways in the past in different circumstances and personally have not found any noticeable difference in the resulting application.
So if it turns out that you find the app folder and its preference folder, and put them into their new home of Applications and user/library/preferences and that does NOT give you a functioning Office suite, then just fall back to Plan B of either reinstall MS Office from the CD (which is usually fast, but then needs to have all the MS online update patches done) or give a try to your TimeMachine and see if it allows a full restore of JUST the Office apps into the new Leopard Mac.
(re your TimeMachine option, I cannot say for certain, as i have yet no experience with running a TimeMachine restore.)

  • Problems w/MS Office 2008 & Google Earth Ever Since Snow Leopard "Upgrade"

I probably should have checked this forum before taking my son's advice to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6. Ever since this upgrade, I've had repeated and frustrating problems with two applications: MS Office 2008 for the Mac and Google Earth for the Mac.
Note that I did an "in-place" upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, i.e., I inserted the installation DVD into my iMac and then double-clicked on "Install Mac OS X".
Office 2008: Ever since the Snow Leopard upgrade, MS Office 2008 has been crashing. Typically, it's Entourage crashing when a crash does occur because that's the office app that I run 95% of the time. However, whenever Entourage crashes and I try to launch Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, they won't launch either... The icons will bounce a few times in the dock but won't run. (The Entourage crash is the only Office App that actually generates a crash window.) Note that there are two identities configured on my iMac, both of which which use Entourage. The key thing about this situation is that when the Office 2008 crash does occur, restarting the iMac ALWAYS resolves the problem until the next time a crash occurs. I've tried to determine what combination of events, i.e., apps open/being used in either/both identities, etc. is the trigger, but I can't find anything obvious. Sometimes I can use the iMac for a whole day without a crash, but that's unusual. If Entourage is left open in both identities, maybe a couple of days will pass without a crash, but invariably it happens again, and then it's reboot time again. In cases where Entourage is left running (in one or both identities), we will still eventually get a crash in one of them if one of us tries to open a WinWord attachment (with a "Not enough memory to run Word" error). If at that point I close Entourage and try to restart it, it crashes. I've tried everything I could find on the Office for the Mac forums, including deleting duplicate fonts, doing a safe start-up, fixing disk permissions via Disk Utility, zapping the PRAM, turning filing sharing off then on (including deleting everything listed in the Shared Folders section), logging out/logging back in, etc., all to no avail. One of the Office 2008 for the Mac forum contributors suggested that the problem was with my Snow Leopard Install, but then a contributor to another more general Apple forum blames Office for Mac. (This is exactly the sort of finger-pointing exercise that I'd hoped to avoid when I made the plunge from being a long-time Windows user to becoming an OS X user...; - )
Google Earth: This just flat-out WILL NOT RUN ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to run it, it bounces in the dock for about a minute then just stops, staying fixed to the dock until I do a Force-Quit. (I don't have it permanently tethered to the dock since I only use it occasionally.) I've tried deleting/reinstalling, including Google Earth's suggestions to remove files from my identity's Google Earth folder in the Library folder, but no dice.
My take on all of this is that despite all of Apple's advertising to the contrary, their OS (including updates to their OS) isn't necessarily as trouble-free/stable as their anti-Windows spots would have you believe. Sorry for this long post, but any help would be much appreciated.

I left my system running all day in 64-bit kernel mode. (I left Entourage running the whole time.) Just now closed Entourage and tried reopening it. Same deal with Google Earth. They both crashed. Here's a screen paste of the entire Microsoft crash log for Entourage:

  • Office 2008 will not work

I have a 3 year old MacPro. Excel won't load documents (error: not enough memory). I cleared all the pictures and documents and it still gives me that error.

    Hi PaulieHK,
Open Finder on you original view desktop.
No go to Application folder and select the Office 2004.
NOW, select the Time Machine icon in the dock and it will bring you back in history.
You can go back before you tried to install Office 2008.
Select IN Time Machine the application Office 2004 and click on PUT BACK.
Time machine will now put back the situation as it was before the installing Office 2008.
When you see your original desktop again try to open Office 2004.
    Good luck ...
    Dimaxum

  • Reinstalling Office 2008 on MacBook Pro

I had to have the hard drive on my MacBook Pro replaced.  When i got it back i tried to reinstall Office 2008.  After the first time, when i tried to activate it nothing would happen - the icon/s (e.g., for Excel) would "bounce" up and down but no app would open.  I tried to reinstall, but all that happened is another set of icons added to the menu bar at the bottom of the screen (which still won't work).  also, when i did the second install, during the part of the process when it looks to see if there are other versions installed, it didn't find anything.  Suggestions?
also, how do you remove those icons (from the menu at the bottom of the screen)?

Those are just icons in your Dock, I'm assuming? You can just click on them, holding down the mouse/trackpad for just a couple of seconds and you'll see "Options" and under that "Remove from Dock".
Are you trying to install Office 2008 from the original disc? You can download it from here and just enter your activation key.
    Clinton

  • Microsoft Office Document Icons in Leopard

Since upgrading to Leopard, the new default icons for Microsoft Office documents are driving me crazy. I can't tell the difference between Excel and Word and Powerpoint, etc. Can I simply revert to the old color-coded microsoft icons? Thanks.

    Hello BenMann12,
The default for Office 2008 is to save a picture preview of every file as the file icon. To have the apps save with a normal application icon, launch Word, Excel and PowerPoint. In the Preferences for each app, click on the Save button. Uncheck "Save preview picture with new documents".

  • Office 2008 Problems

I purchased my MacBook about a month ago. Over the past couple of weeks I have been noticing that whenever I use Word or Powerpoint my computer will slow down, the fan will get loud, and the computer gets hot. The past day or two my computer has been completely freezing up when I'm in Powerpoint. I made sure I have all of the updates downloaded and everything. Is anyone else having this problem? I'm not sure what to do...

I'm having a similar problem with Office X, but only with Word. Sometimes Word will just chew up my CPU and the fan kicks into high gear. I rebooted and even reinstalled the software but the problem persists.
Yesterday, I was editing a document and the document would occasionally "lock", that is, I would scroll up and down but nothing would happen until I clicked the mouse and then the document scrolled up and down, as if it were catching up with my keystrokes. It was very frustrating.
At times, I could delete text but couldn't add text without clicking somewhere else in the document and back again. Sometimes I would have to do a File -> Save before it would let me continue typing. It was as if it was always 1 keystroke behind or something, waiting for the previous "process" to finish before allowing me to proceed. All this time, of course, the CPU and fan are chugging away.
I fried my hard drive last week when my MacBook overheated and I'm sure Word was the culprit. I will not run Word without the Activity Monitor open and never leave Word the active window if I step away from my computer. Hiding it or putting another process in the foreground will reduce Word's CPU usage
I also had a footer that I couldn't delete. I had to copy the entire document into a new file and re-do the formatting, headers, and footers.
And here's another odd thing. When I launch Word, it shows up as "Microsoft Word" in the Activity Monitor, but just for a second, then the process name changes to "(null)". I can tell it's Word because it still has the Word icon next to it.
I was going to upgrade to Office 2004 or Office 2008 but it doesn't sound that that will solve the problem.

  • Used migration assistant to move office 2008 and now i cannot open it

I had an old MacBook from 2008, and now have a new MacBook Air. Was told to use migration assistant to move my applications. I did this and now when I go to open any programme from Microsoft Office 2008, it takes me to Microsoft Office Setup Assistant, over and over and over... Its saying that I don't need to register...
    Any advice or help?

I migrated Office 2011 and other than forcing me to enter the license code again (all 2 million letters of it) everything went OK.
Note that when I tried to open Parallels desktop 6 it wouldn't open and said that it wasn't compatible with Mountain Lion and the icon had a sort of greyed out look. I upgraded to 8 and it started working. I wonder if there is any issue with Office 2008 and Mountain Lion? Probably not but it's a possibility.
You can buy an external superdrive too from Apple. I bought one for my 2010 Air. But CD sharing from another computer should work. I bring it with me when I travel to watch DVDs.

  • Unix command to update Microsoft Office 2008 via ARD

I'm looking for a unix command I can send via ARD to update Microsoft Office 2008. It just needs to install all updates and then restart. Kinda like apple's software update one: softwareupdate -i -a; shutdown -r now

Why go through all the trouble of trying to do it in Unix.  Apple and Microsoft made it a LOT easier.
Just download the update from Mactopia
    Open the .dmg
(for convience and ability to have it stored) Drag the Update from the Microsoft folder that opens up and put the update on your desktop
In ARD Select what computer(s) you want to install the update in
Use ARD Install function to install the update
Go have a cup of coffee and a donut while ARD does the install.
You do not even have to do a restart.  Microsoft uses a different icon for the update but it still is a package file operation.

  • Is Microsoft Office 2008 compatible with OS X Yosemite?

Is Microsoft Office 2008 compatible with OS X Yosemite? My Word, Excel and PowerPoint files won't open since updating my OS.

Your Office installation sounds corrupted. I would reinstall Office, but you must first do a complete removal of it. I did not write this note, but it should apply to Office 2008. You will just need to locate the version equivalents at the MS site. You might also check inside the Office 2008 folder for an uninstaller.
Your MS Office 2011 may have become corrupted.  Reinstalling Office 2011 can address problems that you may be experiencing.
First - find your Office 2011 install disc with the product key # - and only then remove Office according to MS instructions
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768.
Or go here to DianefromOregon's site for help removing Office 2011: http://www.officeformachelp.com/2012/12/office-for-mac-2011-remove-office/.
    Then Reinstall from DVD
    Then enter your Product #
After successfully reinstalling Office 2011, update your Office product using the Software update within Office called Microsoft Update or going to the Help menu within Word or Excel or PowerPoint and select Update.
It may take a few times before you get to final upgrade to current Office version.
It should be 14.4.8 as of current date.

Or you can do all of this manually:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • Created a "Stack" for Office 2008 & now Cannot access

I created a Stack for "Office for Mac 2008." After it was created, I threw some files (e.g. "Read Me") back into my HD. I did not open my HD, just dragged the files to the icon. After doing so, Entourage will work as will Messenger, but Word, Excel, and Powerpoint will not work. I tried to drag the files back into the Office folder. It now matches Office on my MacBook. It contains Entourage, Excel, Messenger, Powerpoint, Word, and the folder labeled "Office."
The difference is: on my MacBook, where everything works fine, the "Office for Mac 2008" folder is the usual blue folder. On my iMac, where I am having the trouble described above, it is labeled as a folder, but appears as the yellow Office folder.
When I try to open Word, I receive a message that the application quit unexpectedly. If I choose to "report" it to Apple, I receive the following message:

    Wow, thanks for writing back!
I did try to double click on the Word, Excel, and Powerpoint applications from inside the Microsoft Office folder.
I no longer have the folder in the Dock.
Please forgive this long response, but (as I'm sure you've caught by now) I'm not tech savvy!
If I click on the Microsoft Office 2008 folder, and then click on the "Office" folder inside, I will paste everything I see:

  • Install Office 2008 in lion?

How do you install Office 2008 into Lion? The installer is a PPC app that without Rosetta does not work.
    Thanks

Basically it will be a problem you may be able to overcome. Get Pacifist and try using it to access the packages within the installer so it can install them. See the following for some partial help:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.  However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive.  Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items.  Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.)
Click on the  "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1.          In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b.          or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3.          In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4.          On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5.          Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6.          Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7.          In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8.          If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9.          In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10.          If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11.          Type in your password, click “OK”
Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12.          In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes:          Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update .....
    Default selection
Replace .... (Replace option should only be used on full install packages)

  • How do I remove the microsoft office 2008 automator workflows?

Hey, first off all sorry if this isn't quite in the right place but there was a lot of forums to choose from!
Basically I have installed Microsoft Office 2008 with the automator workflows and now decide that I don't require them and would like to remove them but I am unsure how to go about this?
I know about the automator folder in system with the workflows in but don't want to delete any as I am afraid I will delete the wrong ones!
    Thanks for your help
    Joe

    Joe Bradley wrote:
Thanks for your reply but this leads me on to the next question.. The reason for removing them is to remove the scripts icon at the far right of the top menu bar when an office application is running, I thought uninstalling the actions would remove this or am I completely wrong?
the scripts icon has nothing to do with office or office automator actions.
if you don't want it there just command+drag it off the sidebar.
The reason that it annoys me is because it creates a delay when you quit an office program
no, it doesn't. it makes no difference for office whether the scripts icon is there or not. this icon is there if you want to access some apple scripts. its mere presence has zero impact on speed of anything.
    Thanks for your help!
