Office 2008 update to 12.1.0 fails on 10.6.2

I have just received my new iMac which came with 10.6.2 pre-installed. I have installed Office 2008 which then searches for updates and finds it needs 12.1.0 which it downloads. Half way through installing, after "writing files" and somewhere in something like "running package scripts" it skips suddenly to the end saying the installation failed. I have tried this many times, uninstalling Office and starting from scratch with reboots in between all to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas? Anyone know where to look for an error message?
I have a Office 2008 on my MacBookPro with 10.6.2 working fine but I think I did the updates when it was at 10.6.0 . . .

I'm running v12.2.3 on Office 2008, which is the latest update and I have no issues at all.

  • Acrobat 9.0 Pro and Office 2008 updates download but won't install

I hope I'm not alone experiencing the following difficulties installing third party patches and updates and that someone who reads this may recognize the problem…and its solution. I've run Adobe Updater (6?) for CS4 Design Standard which includes Acrobat 9.0 Professional, and subsequently, Microsoft Autoupdate for Office 2008 v12.0.1, but find that neither will install the downloaded updates which disappear immediately after an (unsuccessful) installation attempt.
Disk space is not a problem (500GB HD) nor is memory (4GB RAM); I'm using OS 10.6.4 (10F569) which is the most current set of OS updates I can locate. I had successfully been running CS4 with Adobe's most recent patches (e.g. P'Shop 11.0.2 and Acrobat 9.3.3) until the 9.3.4 patch failed to install with the message that +"Safari and Acrobat apps must be closed in order to proceed"+—they were closed as was everything else that wasn't essential according to a check of the Acitivity Window. A grab of the alert panel reads:
+"AcroProUPd934_all Update Failed: The Patch has failed because the application has been modified since it was originally installed (for example, plug-ins may have been disabled). Please go to the Adobe support website for more information regarding how to re-enable disabled components prior to installing the patch, or you can uninstall and reinstall the application, and then reinstall the patch."+
Of course, uninstalling CS4 and reinstalling the entire suite of apps reverts all of them to their original versions, now none of them will accept an update…whether manually downloaded and fed to it or by using Adobe's most recent AutoUpdater. The most consistent message is an alert panel stating that in order to continue, Safari and Acrobat applications must be closed—which they are.
Not surprisingly, after nearly 8 hours on a cell phone with Adobe Tech Support in Delhi, 5 different techs and a manager, the case remains open a week later; it seems +"no one has ever seen or heard of this problem before"+ and an overly apologetic manager could only repeat +"it's [Adobe] policy to remove all copies of CS4 from existence once CS5 is introduced."+ While we waited for 500MB of updates to download more than once, a helpful tech suggested I'd have more luck finding a used copy of CS4 on the net than getting a link to another download from Adobe.
With regard to Microsoft Office 2008, I'd been running v12.0.1 and the MS Autoupdate app has tried to download and install v12.1.0 (and those which follow) but when installation is attempted, an alert panel reads:
+"There is a problem with the Office database. Office might be unable to access the data base or the database file might be damaged. Without the database, you might be unable to use the Address Book, Scrapbook, and other features that store your personal information. To rebuild the database, Open Microsoft Office 2008/Office, and then open the Microsoft Database Utility. For more information, open the Database Utility application, and on the Help menu, click Database Utility Help."+
All attempts to rebuild the database fail, noting…
+ERROR: Failed to open database [Head]+
    +ERROR: Corruption opening database [16003:""]+
    ======================
    +Scan Ended+
    ====================
Two hours on the phone with a relentlessly pleasant Nova Scotian tech for Microsoft revealed little but the suggestion that +"the app doesn't seem to be able to recognize your hard drive. I've never seen this problem before."+
With luck, perhaps someone reading this far recognizes the issue and can offer a solution? It will be gratefully received! Thanks,
    David

Disk space is not a problem (500GB HD)
How much space is available out of the 500GB?
Have you tried any of the following:
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and try the installations again.

  • MS Office 2008 Update: fixes some print issues?

I noticed the first update for Office 2008 is out, and one "fix" they list for Word is:
Blank pages are no longer printed when you print to a high resolution printer. This update fixes an issue in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard that causes blank pages to print when you print to a high resolution printer.
I know people have struggled with Samsung and other printers and Word since Leopard released. I do not have one of the affected printers so cannot test it.
    The updater is here:

  • Crashing Computer after Office 2008 Update!

Late last week I downloaded the latest "critical update" for Office 2008 for Mac and ever since then my computer crashes about every 30 minutes.  When I open Entourage i usually get an Microsoft error report and everything locks up.  Any ideas?

Have you rebooted the Mac?  (Not sleep, but shut down or restart.)  While most Office updates do not require a restart, often rebooting "fixes" many problems.  Then have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office?  Do other apps crash?  (i.e.: can you open Mail, Safari, iCal, etc?)  If the other apps are ok, then you may want to ask in the Office for Mac forums since it's likely an Office issue and not a Mac issue.

  • Office 2008 update to 2011

I bought the Office 2008 student version (3 liscences) and then updated it to 2011 by web. I installed it on my new iMac. Now I am going to buy and Air and want to install the 2008 version and update to 2011 again. I thought I read somewhere that this had to be done by the end of this year. If that is the case then will I need to buy Office again?

Depends on how many copies you upgraded. From what I'm reading, the upgrade is for a single license only. You can't assume that if you bought a 3-license 2008, that the upgrade is 3-license also.
I'd talk to Microsoft on how they are going to handle this. But, either way, any of these upgrades MUST be registered to them by the 31st.

  • Future Office 2008 updates with OS X v10.7 Lion

I understand Office 2008 is compatable with Lion but its installer is not. Down the road if MS has an update for Office 2008, will it be possible to do the update with the issue of the incompatible installer?

It should say which OS it works with on the side of the box (or download site) or on the manufacturers website?

  • Microsoft Office 2008 Update Loop/Glitch for Survey

I just downloaded the new update for Microsoft Office 2008 and once I'm finished with it, a screen pops up prompting me to either take an anonymous survey or forgo it. Once past that screen it'll ask me to either register this product or learn more. Even when I try to register it mactopia never loads up and no matter what I try to open Office will only give me that screen.
It does this when I try to open a new blank document, or try to open an existing file.
Is there a glitch and a patch available to fix it? Or is there any way to bypass the survey?
SOS I need to write papers and take notes!!

I cam up with this fix from another forum that worked for me.

  • Entourage (Office 2008) crashes

Since upgrading earlier today to OS X 10.6.3, Entourage freezes, have to force quit. Word, Powerpoint and Excell all seem OK. Have seen some discussons on other web forums, looking for the Mac/OS X perspective.
A potentially unique aspect is that this involves my wife's computer. For years she has refused to delete any email messages. (No lectures, please. She has had them from me.) She hopes the fix will retain the ~1,200 messages in both her inbox and sent mail file. The inbox messages apparently are retained on her server (Comcast), but not sent messages.
Looking for recommendations. Also, since this seems to be a common problem, presumably a fix will be coming, in an Office 2008 update, or from Apple, or both. Has anybody heard anything?
    Thanks-- HHHMD, Seattle

I would presume Microsoft would issue a fix if there was one - it's their software even though it's running on Macs. Is there any way to report problems to Microsoft through the program like with Apple's software? (For example in many Apple programs you can report bugs to Apple).

  • Can't uninstall Office 2008 on Mountain Lion

I recently bought a MacBook Pro and put my account on it, from Time Machine, from my previous MacBook. This included Office 2008 which I then had to reinstall in order to update the licence code (my wife has the old MacBook, so we couldn't both use Office simultaneously). Then I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. However it now won't install any Office updates - I get the message:
"You cannot install Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.0 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume."
I have tried every workaround suggested - and there are a few - including the one where you edit the package_update file. No success at all.
The simplest workaround ought to be to uninstall Office altogether and do a clean re-install. But here's the thing: I can't uninstall, neither by dragging it to the trash, nor by using Remove Office. Each time I try, I get this message:
"The operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure “Locked” is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again."
There are 1382 files to delete, so I'm not going to check each one using Get Info. I've used Disk Utility to repair permissions - no joy.
    Can someone help me uninstall

    dnr16 wrote:
OK, I finally solved it myself - though this may not work for everyone. My wife's MacBook was still running Lion and was able to install all the Office 2008 updates. So I copied the updated version across. I then had to re-register it with my own code.
Simple, in a way. But why did it have to be so hard in the first place? I still don't understand why I couldn't uninstall Office.
Probably something that can be addressed by the developers on MS Office on their Troubleshoting forums, perhaps.

No. Neither application has any dependency on Java. I suggest running Console.app and looking for an error message that might indicate why they are failing to run.

  • Office 2013 updates fail on computers with Access 2013 installed

I have about 10 workstations with the combination of Windows 7 enterprise 32 bit, Access 2013 and Office 2007 installed.
SCCM offers up both Office 2007 and Office 2013 updates to these machines, but the Office 2013 updates, fail to install.
The same thing happens when I go to Microsoft updates and manually install the required Office 2013 updates.
I read that one of the updates required Office 2013 sp1.
But when I downloaded it, it won't install:  KB2817430 "The expected version of this product was not found on the system."
This is the second month I've had the failures. I removed KB2878316 and KB2889927 from my deployments and packages to stop repeated install attempts.
But this month I've got a new on failing, KB2899493.
Is there a way around this problem?

Thanks, I couldn't really find anything but it looks as though this could be just the way it is.
    from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2784668
When you start a version of Access on a computer that has multiple versions of Access installed, the Windows Installer may start, and
a message that states that the Windows Installer is preparing to install Access may be displayed before Access starts.
Every time that you start Access 2003, Access 2007, or Access 2010 after you use Access 2013, the Windows Installer repair operation registers
that version of Access. Similarly, the Windows Installer repair operation registers Access 2010 every time that you start it after you use an earlier version of Access. This does not occur when you start Access 2002, nor does it occur when you start the same
    version of Access again.
Is this likely to also apply even when running App-V?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems

Open Console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & next startup for clues.
