Office 2010 downloads too much stuff to users' roaming profiles, making it go over the 30MB size limit

Hey, we recently rolled out to Office 2010 at my workplace.
On the student segment we've activated the 30MB roaming profile size limit, and we've found that a bunch of students have had trouble with this now because Office 2010 seems to download around 8MB of files to %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Templates\LiveContent, which
occasionally makes the profile go over the 30MB size limit.
Is there any easy way to prevent this LiveContent from being downloaded?? Anything I can set in the installation transformation file, or preferably with a registry setting or something?

You had mentioned a policy to disable synchronization of the LiveContent folders.
I think it would be this GP admin template setting, it's what we use for this kind of requirement:
File Name: UserProfiles.admx
Policy Setting Name: Exclude directories in roaming profile
Scope: User
Policy Path: System\User Profiles
Registry Information: HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System!ExcludeProfileDirs
Supported On: At least Windows 2000
Help Text: This policy setting lets you exclude folders that are normally included in the user's profile.
As a result, these folders do not need to be stored by the network server on which the profile resides and do not follow users to other computers.
Note: When excluding content from the profile you should try to exclude the narrowest set of data that will address your needs.
For example, if there is one application with data that should not be roamed then add only that application's specific folder under the AppData\Roaming folder rather than all of the AppData\Roaming folder to the exclusion list.By default, the Appdata\Local
and Appdata\LocalLow folders and all their subfolders such as the History, Temp, and Temporary Internet Files folders are excluded from the user's roaming profile. In operating systems earlier than Microsoft Windows Vista, only the History, Local Settings,
Temp, and Temporary Internet Files folders are excluded from the user's roaming profile by default. If you enable this policy setting, you can exclude additional folders. If you disable this policy setting or do not configure it, only the default folders are
excluded.
Note: You cannot use this policy setting to include the default folders in a roaming user profile.

  • Too much authentication on my Mac. How can I disable the messages?

Got a shiny new iMac. Somehow I set it up so that I have to authenticate way too much stuff, like emptying the trash. On my Macbook all I have to authenticate is SW installation. How do I fix it do there is less authentication?

Click on the Finder to activate, select Preferences from the Finder menu, click on Advanced icon in the toolbar, uncheck the middle two options. That's all you can disable. The rest is for security purposes.

A barcode scanner that was connected directly to the Mac's USB port stopped working as the "USB had too much power drawn", even though it has worked for over a year in that port.  When we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why?  Obviously the device is operational.  Could the USB port have burned out from having too much power drawn?  If so, is it reparable?

It can't draw "too much" power, it can only draw as much as the USB port is able to provide and no more. IIRC, the keyboard port has a lower power output than the iMac's port.
That being said, yea, it's possible that the port has failed and it can be replaced or if another port works you can use that one. Although if it is still under warranty or covered by Apple Care, then I would take it to an Apple Store or service provider to get the port repaired.

  • All I want is all my contacts on my phone and the same on my iMac, but no, that's too much to ask, instead I get everything doubled up on the phone and everything doubled up (triple in some cases) on the iMac, why does it do this? and more importantly how

All I want is all my contacts on my phone and the same on my iMac, but no, that's too much to ask, instead I get everything doubled up on the phone and everything doubled up (triple in some cases) on the iMac, why does it do this? and more importantly how can I stop it? Thanks

Look under system preferences on the mac at what is be controlled?  Look at Mail, Contacts, Calendars.  How many accounts are managing contacts?  Just the cloud? the cloud and gmail? or cloud, gmail, yahoo, and exchange?  If you have more than one contact account, then you will have different contact lists, if John Smith shows up in more than one of your contact lists, you will have multiple entries.
Pick a contact list that is your master, (I use iCloud), only turn on contact syncing for it.  The same for your phone.  Spend some time on the iCloud webset (www.icloud.com) and work on your contact list there.  Clean it up, remove duplicates, etc...Changes will auto sync back to all your devices.  Life gets much simplier.
Just remember, if you sync different contacts lists and a large number of people appear in your different lists, then they will appear as duplicates.

  • FCE 4 - too much for average user?

I am an average home movie user with a Sony HD miniDV camera and was wondering if FCE would be "too much"? I don't have any experience using FCE so I wasn't sure if I would gain much over iMovie or if it would be too complicated. I have some experience with iMovie but have not been heavy into editing but with a new baby, I plan to do a lot more in the future. Thanks for the help!

Judging by what you say I would think iMovie (versions 2 to 6 - NOT 08) would suit you.
iMovie is quite an advanced editor, can produce high quality videos and has the merit of being dead easy to use.
Furthermore, with a new baby you will have neither the spare cash to buy FCE 4 nor the spare time to learn how to use it !

  • How can we reset the SAP cache for users roaming profile in a d?

Our active directory is on windows server 2003.
    SAP version 6.40
users work from different workstations in our company with their roaming profile.
printouts are defined by assigning a printer to the terminal (usually the closest terminal to theprinter)
we have some users who have logined to windows, are unable to print to the assigned printer, because the name of the terminal is stuck on another terminal they worked on before.
we think that the the cache in SAP does not update properly.
Where is the SAP cache, is it in the server, or the workstation, or the user profile?
    Can anyone help?
    Robyn

all configurations of the printers are correct.
I will try and explain the problem differently:
In general If a user logs on to SAP, we will see in tc al08 the username and terminal the user is working from. (The terminal is the full computer name e.g. WS-KITCHEN).
When a user with the problem logs on to SAP, we will see in tc al08 the username and the name of a terminal he worked from in the past and not the work station he is at present. Therefore his printouts go to the printer that is allocated to the terminal that he worked on before and not the WS-KITCHEN he is working on now.
    Thanks

  • The spinning "wheel of death" does NOT go away! I've loaded too much stuff on my computer (including the entire Adobe CS6 software) and I want to delete everything on my macbook pro and start over? How do I clean everything up without buying MacKeeper?

I use my MacBook Pro (Late 2009) for EVERYTHING and I have loaded so many apps, even doubles of some, I think!   My computer is running really SLOW and I think it is because I don't have enough memory.
I just installed the new Adobe CS6 and that was a BIG mistake.  The spinnning wheel of death doesn't stop! I wish I could load that program on my computer so I can use it "on the go", but I can't stand the spinning wheel!
I want to clean up my computer and get rid of EVERYTHING on it!!     Then, re-install the factory settings to run Lion.  I believe this will make the wheel stop spinning.
However, how do I make sure that all of the extra stuff that is attached to the app, ( including all the cache') is deleted too?   I don't want to have to buy MacKeeper!
I am hoping the computer wizards or the apple team can give me an answer on how to clean up everything and start over.  I have saved everything on my desktop mac.

Thank you so much for the help!  I had heard bad things about MacKeeper and I don't want to screw up my macbook  any more than it already is!  I will do as you suggest.  Do you believe this is the best solution for the problem I described?
Should I load my Adobe Creative Suite 6 (in the cloud version) on an external hard drive?
I am so tired of this spinning wheel....should I avoid putting the CS6 on my macbook pro altogether?
I have it on my desk top mac, but wanted to be able to take the photo editing with me when I am "out and about".  I know I should probably buy the ipad, which would transport much easier, but even the ipad probably doesn't have the capacity to hold all the Adobe CS6 apps, correct?

  • Way too much stuff, need more locations

Yes, I have a 1TB drive - that's too full. I had to move a lot of stuff to a new 1TB drive. In order to find the moved stuff I have to go one by one to 'locate' and all is good in the world. Is there an easier way? Because I would LOVE to know it. Apologies if this has been answered before, I searched and couldn't find.

    *Adding new items/removing orphans*
Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s really slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.

  • Too much stuff running in the background

I have a Casio Commando Gz'One.  I installed an App called Advanced Task Killer to be able to turn unnecessary things off that are constantly running the background.  What I have noticed is even right after I run Advanced Task Killer, there is A LOT of stuff that keeps turning itself back on.  How can I permanently turn off apps/stuff that I rarely if ever use?
As an example of Apps/stuff that constantly is on and turning itself back on in the background........My Verizon Mobile, Gallery, Camera, Desk Cradle, Mobile IM, Skype Mobile, Slacker, City ID, etc etc etc.
I'd prefer to not have all this stuff constantly running in the background and using up memory.  I notice that when I don't run Advanced Task Killer for a while my phone responds slower and slower and the longer I leave things be, my available memory available goes down......
    How do I do this?

Thanks, Ann, that's a great article, very helpful to a veteran Windows user like me, who isn't used to RAM being managed this way by the OS.
I  just did a quick check on my Samsung Stratosphere using Menu > Applications > Memory usage, then tapping Running. There's a lot of stuff running, and I do wonder about some of it. Slacker Radio, for instance, which I've never used and don't intend to use, has been running for 24 hours and is using 2.3 MB of memory. When I press and hold it, I get a screen informing me that it was started by an application called Tap to stop, and a warning, "Service started by application. Stopping service may cause application to fail." If I throw caution to the winds and tap Stop anyway, I get another message, "Stop this system service? Some features of your phone may stop working correctly until you turn it off and then on again," at which point I grab caution back from the winds and hit Cancel.
So, granted that I should just leave things alone and "let Android be Android," as the writer of the article you linked to says, I'm still curious. What the heck is the application called "Tap to stop"? I don't see it anywhere. What feature of my phone would fail if I forced Slacker Radio to stop?
Thanks again for the article. It's fun to learn about a new OS.

  • I downloaded too much and I have no room to render.

Is there any way I can transfer it to a firewire hard disk I have and then render?
Can you break it up? and save it somehow? Do I have to start over?
    iMacG5, 200 mh 13" black Mac Book.   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   FCE HD 3.5

I gather the material is on the internal drive. How much space do you have on the drive? If it's overly full you're going to have to move stuff or the system is going to get into trouble. You can move the material to a FireWire drive and reconnect to it and assigned the scratch disk for capture and render to be the new drive.

  • Too Much Stuff

This is a Ps question, but I have the same problem with AE, bridge, and others.  In the past I had Ps CS2 and AE CS3 (which came with Bridge 3).  I have upgraded to CS5 Production Suite which includes Ps, AE, etc. but, of course, all CS5.  Prior to installation, I used the Windows control panel to uninstall CS2 and CS3.  Then, I loaded in CS5.  Today, as I examine what's in my system in My Computer>C>program files (64bit) and Program files (x86) (32 bit), I seem to have a fully functional Ps CS5 32 bit as well as Ps CS5 64 bit.  I also have what seem like bits and pieces of the old CS2 and CS3 programs.
Am I right to assume that these just got left over during the uninstall process and I can simply delected them from the program files?
I am perplexed at having two fully functional Ps CS5 programs, one for 32 bit and another for 64.  I have looked in the control panel for a way to uninstall the 32 bit version but it only offers to uninstall the entire suite.
Although everything is working fine, I would still like to clear out the stuff I don't need so as to maintain maximum usable space on the HDD.
How do I do this?  Thanks in advance, Dale

Oops, I meant to type the word UNinstall just after the word "don't".  I got it backwards.  I meant to say "...don't uninstall the 32 bit version..."
I only ran through the Photoshop CS5 installer twice, back in May, and I didn't remember seeing there was a way to install or uninstall one of the 32 / 64 bit pair either, but I've been told since then that it's possible.

  • Won't start properly because of too much stuff on desktop - how do I delete stuff if it won't start up now?

I was trying to move photos to an external hard drive because my startup disk was full and I accidentally dropped them onto the desktop. Now my computer won't start properly because of all the stuff on the desktop and I don't know how I can fix that?

Start up in safe mode. Hold the Shift key while your Mac is starting and check that you can start up in safe mode. Then, choose all the items you want to transfer in Desktop by pressing Command and A keys, and move them to the external drive.
If you have any file in Desktop that you don't want to transfer, simply click it while pressing the Command key

  • Too much stuff in "other"?

Hi - I have a 30gb and 60gb video ipod - they both sync to the same itunes.
They both show the same amount (17gb) in "music". But the 30gb has 6.66gb in "other", while the 60gb only has a few megs in "other".
For the life of me, I can't figure out what that stuff is. Neither ipod is enabled for disk usage, but I did check them and neither of them has anything when viewed as a disk except apple's sample files.
How do I find out what this stuff is and get rid of it?
    Thanks,
    cf

Try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • IPhone checking POP3 email downloading too much data. HELP

    Can others confirm this problem?
I have an Iphone 3gs 16gb. I have 2 mail accounts. If I click the mail account it will connect, check for mail, then say updated. I do this on both of the mail accounts.
I then check my usage under settings, and the iphone has used 884KB to check for email. I've attempted this on 2 seperate iphones.
Can someone else confirm this same problem happens to them? What this means is if you have 2 email accounts set to check every 15 minutes, you'll blow right through your 2 GB cap, JUST ON EMAIL.
As a side note, checking for new emails using POP3 is supposed to use about 6kb or less of data usage. So, it appears the iPhone pop3 email reader has some serious issues.

Do you have push notifications turned off? Have you used any applications prior to checking e-mail that uses any of the dozen features that requires data like Maps/GPS? It is possible if you have multiple things running including e-mail that it's the 800Kb along with e-mail.
Most users run IMAP protocol however instead of POP protocol. If your e-mail company serves IMAP this may be lesser usage and it includes several features including calendar and contacts.
