Office 2011 totally breaks links in the OS?

After installing Home Student version of Office 2011 for Mac, mouse behaviour is altered, appllication bar no longer can find associated apps. Clicking on the desktop no longer brings Finder to the fore.  Also, booting the computer results in numerous thunderous bumping sounds and a white screen.  Already had Office 2004 installed when adding 2011, so deleted 2004 which seemed to help, however after rebooting the problem is back.  Am deleting Office 2011 now, to see if that may be a cure.
Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel your pain. I have had similar issues, but have yet to find a fix. There are some VERY knowledgeable "techies" on here, but unfortunately, most of them speak way above anything that I am able to comprehend. If you do a search using some keywords like maybe "Lion Office 2011 crashes" (or something like that) you will find lots of threads on this topic. But the fixes might as well be written in Chinese---I have no clue what any of them are talking about (and I've been a loyal Mac user for over 25 years). Good luck.

    I received an email containing a spreadsheet created using Mac Office 2004 on my new MacBook Air equipped with Mac Office 2011.  When I saved the document, my Finder lists the document without the .xls file extension. Why?
    All other .xls documents created by Mac Office 2004 retained the .xls file extention when I migrated them over to the new MacBook Air.

    I know what happened.  When I saved the document I somehow hit the Hide File Extension box.  Sorry to trouble this group. I simply resaved it w/o activating the Hide File Extension feature.

  • Breaking Links to and External Data Connection using the cubevalue() function

    I have spreadsheets that connect to an MSAS cube successfully and pull data in the cells using the CUBEVALUE function.
    Is there a way to perform the equivalent of 'breaking links' to the external database so that the spreadsheet can be distibuted to others that will not have the external database connection set up on their computer/excel environment.
    I find that if i email a spreadsheet with data retreived using cubevalue functions to someone without the external database connection they do not see the values preserved with the spreadsheet and end up with blank or zero cells, etc.
    I have unchecked the box related to 'refresh data when opening file'.
    In a perfect world i would like to remove the db connection and be left with pasted values, similar to breaking links to an external workbook but I am not sure if that is possible.
    I am desperate to find a way to distribute these spreadsheets and be confident that Excel won't be unsuccessfully trying to refresh a connection that isn't on other peoples computer.
    Thanks for any guidance

    Maybe you can upload a sample file to a file sharing site and then share the link with us.
    As you said you have already unchecked the option 'Refresh data when opening the file' within Connection Properties.
    When you send the Excel file to someone without this data connection, they should get the correctly data unless they click the button 'Refresh All'.

  • Microsoft Office 2011 "Recent Items"

    On my new iMac 27" (late 2013, according to the System Info, although delivered in late October 2014; 32 gigs of RAM) running OS X Yosemite v 10.10 all the Microsoft Office 2011 apps run fine and the apps show up in Recent Items under the Apple menu, but no MS Office documents do. Documents created in all other apps do appear in Recent Items, including a couple of Word and Excel files opened, renamed, and saved using Pages and Numbers, respectively.
    I spent about an hour on the phone with an Apple Care rep and a supervisor/specialist, neither of whom could figure out what was going on. As recommended, I reinstalled Yosemite (no help), and on my own deleted and reinstalled Office 2011, going through all the online updates. Again, no change.
    I trashed the plist for Recent Items (no help) and then removed the recentitems.plist.lockfile, which was there to the surprise of the specialist. From what I have read, its function is to keep the system from getting confused or overloaded if two programs are trying to write to the plist at the same time. A new recentitems.plist.lockfile was not created after I took it out of the Library/Preferences folder.
    I really don't want to do a clean install an d
    Any thoughts? This is not a critical flaw, but it is annoying.

    It seems to be an open issue for Yosemite. There is a workaround though:
    Recent items no longer creating links for recently opened word/excel documents

  • Trial version of Microsoft Office 2011 Home and Student

    Where do I go to online to download a free trial version of Microsoft Office 2011 Home and Student? I need to enter in an access key because my MacBook Air doesn't have a CD drive.

    Look on the MS Office 365 website for links to the download version. You could also buy an External DVD drive that connects by USB port. Any brand will work with your Mac Air. It does not have to have the Apple name on it for it to work on your Air.

  • How do I get MS Office 2011 to work on Mountain Lion?

    I recently upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion and now I can't use any of my Microsoft Office 2011 applications.  I downloaded the new Auto Update from Microsoft, but since I am unable to open any Microsoft Office applications, I'm not able to run the autoupdate.
    Is there anyone who knows how to get it to work again?

    This is less painful:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
    Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
    Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
    Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
    Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
    Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
    If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind 4.9, instead.
    Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
    There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper 2.0.1
    AppDelete 3.2.6
    Automaton 1.50
    Hazel
    AppCleaner 2.1.0
    CleanApp
    iTrash 1.8.2
    Amnesia
    Uninstaller 1.15.1
    Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
    Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • MS Office 2011 strangeness and Mountain Lion

    I think this is a ML issue, since I hadn't seen it before I upgraded to ML. There are times when I start my iMac (with Excel and Word left open, with open documents) that either Excel or Word will generate a "ghost window". This window is found in the same location as one of the windows I had left open, and only becomes apparent if I move the window. The window is identical to the active window, but is greyed out, and has the spinning whatever on it (The same symbol that appears when the computer is starting up). I cannot activate the "ghost window", nor can I close it, as the entire window is greyed out. The only way I can get rid of this "ghost window" is by quitting the application and restarting it. Anyone have any idea what's going on?
    27" iMac (Mid-2010, 3.6 GHz i5, 4 Gig RAM, OS10.8.2, running MS Office 2011, with all the latest updates.
    Thanks in advance.

    Wish I had an answer for you... but I do feel less lonely knowing someone else has the exact same issue!
    My "ghost" window appears when closing any Office 2011 file.  I get the darkened window, the same size as it was when open... and the spinning "wait" symbol.  I can even move the window around the screen by clicking and holding on the top of it.  But when I look at the open files in the application (Window menu), there are none.  I can even do a File, Open Recent, and open that file again... but the "ghost" window will still be there.  The only way to get rid of it is to close the app then open it again.  Very strange.  Started about four'ish weeks ago.  I had put another 8GB of memory in my Mac and thought that was it.  So I removed the extra memory... but no joy!  Still doing it.  I assume it was an Office or OSX update... or a video driver update.  But I don't know how to update, or "roll back", the hardware drivers on a Mac.

  • Important Microsoft Office 2011 Excel File isn't opening Please Help!

    Hello everyone,
    I'm having problems opening one single excel file. I've tried others and they open with no issue. This file I'm trying to open now opened 2 days ago as it's a project I've been working on and I desperately need to get back to working on it!
    I'm running OS X 10.8.4 on a Macbook Pro with Microsoft Office 2011. When I open the workbook it loads the progress bar, then doesn't show anything from excel apart from the top bar with file/edit/view... etc
    When I try and open it from this point it gives me a message
    'XXX.xlsx is already open.
    Reopening will cause any changes you made to be discarded. Do you want to reopen XXX.xlsx
    PLEASE HELP and don't hesistate to ask for anymore information if you need it. Thank you.

    Such instances are examples of why one should maintain good backups.  I suggest you consider using Time Macnine backups.  It would allow you to go back in time to earlier versions of the file if a later one is corrupted or if you save unwanted changes by mistake.
    You would need a $80 external disk drive for the Time Machine volume.  Your data is much more valuable than that $80 cost.  Disks can fail at any time, taking all of your data with them.

  • I installed Office 2011 on my new I-mac.  Excell will not open???

    I installed Office 2011 on my new Mac,  Why will Excel not open?

    First restart the Mac, then try to start Excel again, if it fails go to Mactopia Downloads for Office 2011, download all updates for Office 2011, (there are 3) apply the in order (14.02 is first, 14.13 last) follow the instructions, you may have to restart your computer more than once.
    Oh, and if it does start when you try it is still important to do the updates.

  • Lion and MS Word (Office 2011) system crash

    After installing Lion and the auto upgrades, hard disk drive began to become corrupt when saving a large MS Word document (Office 2011 for MAC).  Quickly the system failed with line after line of errors reported with the Disk Utility in the verify disk mode.  Eventally the system stopped operating with a diagnosis of hard disk drive failure (Apple Store Indy).  Replaced the hard disk drive, within one week the same failure mode occurred.  At this point had to erase the hard drive and to reinstall the OS.  Again within one week the same message appeared and the system again crashed.
    Took machine to Apple Store with the request to revert back to Snow Lepard.  Told that the Time Machine back up would only work when Lion was reinstalled.  Reinstalled Lion, Time Machine backed up system.  Copied all data files to external HD, then erased hard disk drive and installed Snow Lepard OS.
    During the entire time of Lion install, Word failed time after time.  Immediately after reverting back to Snow Lepard, Word began to operate normally, with the ability to save the large Word documents that consistenly failed with Lion OS.

    You did not install Office 2010, that is (as citrus pointed out) a Windows program, what exactly did you install?

  • Office 365 logo and link in suite bar

    Does anyone know how I can hide, remove, or change the Office 365 logo and link in the suite bar?
    Stefanie Long

    If you want to hide those two bars please do the following
    1 – Open you site with SharePoint designer
    2 – If you are using a sandbox solution go to _catalogs/masterpage/themename
           If you are using a farm solution got to _catalogs/masterpage/
    3 – Check out and edit in advanced mode the master page you are using
    4 – Search for the comment <!--SuiteBar start-->
    5 – Right before it paste the line bellow
    <Sharepoint:SPSecurityTrimmedControl runat="server" Permissions="ManageWeb">
    6 – Search for <!--SuiteBar end-->
    7 – Just below it paste the code
    </SharePoint:SPSecurityTrimmedControl>
    The SPSecurityTrimmedControl applied remove the suite bar but could not be used to remove the ribbon bar because SharePoint uses this one to calculate the scroll on the page.
    The ribbon bar has to be hidden using a small script.
    8 -  Search for <!--Ribbon end-->
    9 – Right below it paste the script
    <script type="text/javascript">
      var suitebar = $("#suiteBar");
      if(suitebar.length<1)

  • How do I uninstall Office 2011 from my MacBook Air?

    Hi,
    I wasn't sure where to post this, so sorry if it's in the wrong place!
    I recently installed Office 2011 on my Air, using the last licence available to us. I've just found out that my university is giving all students free office for Mac / PC. So, obviously, I'd like to take my existing version off my Air, install my 'free' version and hopefully reclaim one of the licences (so my husband can have Office on his!)
    Any ideas?

    Did you do this from Software Update or Microsoft AutoUpdate? Do it through AutoUpdate if you didn't already, but other than that, this would be an issue to be handled with Microsoft.
