Office Click-to-Run and WSUS

Is there a reason Microsoft chose to subvert WSUS by building a separate update system in Office 2013 click-to-run versions?

Hi,
This is due to the new technology that used to deploy Office. Click-to-Run is a Microsoft streaming and virtualization technology, these streaming and virtualization capabilities are based on technologies in Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V).
Users don't have to download or install updates manually, the Click-to-Run product seamlessly updates itself in the background.
WSUS is not used in a click-to-run deployment. Office is actually downloaded from cloud (O365 Content Delivery Network (CDN)).

  • How can I change the Microsoft Office Click to Run from drive letter 'Q' to something else?

How can I change the Microsoft Office Click to Run from drive letter 'Q' to something else?
We have a legacy app that used drive letter 'Q' already, now the newer machines are coming in with 'Q' preassigned to Microsoft Office Click to Run, and it is causing problems.  There has to be a way to change the drive letter assignment to some
    other letter besides 'Q'

    Hi,
Office that is delivered by Click-to-Run is installed on the Q drive, this cannot be changed.
To work around this problem, uninstall the Click-to-Run version of Office and then install with the traditional MSI-based installation.
To switch to using an MSI-based Office edition, you can learn something useful from this link below:

    Hi,
Which Office 365 Home Premium editions did you install? 32bit or 64bit? Office 2013 doesn’t support running side-by-side installations of 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Office. For example, you can’t install Office 2010 32-bit side-by-side with Visio
2013 64-bit. This applies to both Windows Installer (MSI) and Click-to-Run installations of Office 2013. If you try to do this, you'll receive the error message and be prevented from continuing:

  • I continually get the Update message and when I click it runs and never completes update. This has happened everytime I log in.

Whenever I log in on my computer, I get a Firefox Update message and when I click on it it continually runs for hours and never completes the update.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

  • I have downloaded FF and clicked on Run, and nothing at all happens, never see the wizard.

I read the answers to the other people's questions on this - run as administrator - and that also didn't work.

I assume you downloaded directly from Mozilla, and saved it to a non-temporary location such as Downloads or Desktop? https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/fx/#desktop
In case the installer crashed, can you use the Windows Task Manager to terminate it and try again? To do that:
    * Ctrl+Alt+Esc to launch
    * Check the Applications tab first
    * Check the Processes tab next
I'm not sure how the installer is identified in Processes, but it probably matches the file name under which you saved the installer.

  • Cant uninstall Click to run MS Office 2010 beta

Trying to upgrade MS office 2007 to 2010, it won't allow me to install. It says it can't upgrade a beta version of 2010, so uninstall to continue.
When I try to install the upgrade I get a setup error which states "setup is unable to proceed due to the following errors: Microsoft Office 2010 does not support upgrading from a pre release version of Microsoft Office 2010. You must first uninstall
any pre release version of Microsoft Office 2010 products and associated technologies. Correct the issues listed above and re run setup."
So I then go into my control panel under programs and uninstall or change a program, the only thing I find related is Microsoft Office click-to-run 2010 beta. When I try to uninstall this I get this message, under click to run application manager it says
"the action cannot be completed. Try the action again. If the problem continues, contact Microsoft product support."
Any ideas on how to proceed?

sorry, i have find out the root cause of this issue
i changed winecfg version to win7, last night. it became normally after i changed it back to XP.
BTW , office 2010 needs msxml6 and office 2007 needs msxml3 , they are different .dont make it wrong.
though office 2010 works fine , but @thisllub , you are right , activation is still broken.

  • How to remove Office 2013 (Click to run) package?

I am having problems removing Office 2013 sequenced using Click to Run and is published to the machine as per MS guidelines.
It's a member of a connection group with another application.
    I have tried many things:
    get-appvclientpackage | stop-appvclientpackage | remove-appvclientpackage.
    get-appclientconnectiongroup | remove-appvclientconnectiongroup
The connection group and both applications remain.
Error reported is that the application is still in use (no idea which one as it doesnt say). Task manager doesn't seem to list anything running from any virtual environment. I have tried viewing 'processes from all users' also.
I unpublished the connection group and the applications from the App-V Management Server, then retried the above commands which didnt work.
Tried rebooting after doing all the above, then retry PoSH commands and that didnt work either.
    Any ideas?

  • Update Server of auto-update by Click-to-Run

    Hi.
I have a client PC environment which was installed Office 2013 into using "Click-to-Run."
And the client belongs to a LAN inside a Firewall. It is a very popular situation.
Microsoft documents say the Office product will be updated automatically from CDN(Contents Delivery Network.)
But I couldn't find information of where the Update Server is and which port my Firewall should open.
    Does anyone have suggestion?
(For now, I don't expect the way I use ODT(Office Developer Tools) in another internet-connected computer.)

That's expected, you cannot visit it directly.
If you didn't customize your Office installation, by default, Office click-to-run will download and install updates from that server automatically.
If you want to find the version history for Office 2013 Click-to-Run, here is the link:

  • Office 365 ProPlus deployment and Automation

I will starting a project deploying office 365 ProPlus in an enterprise and seeking assistance on following:-
    customer Scenario:
    1- SCCM 2012 R2
    2- Active Directory 2008 R2
3- Mix of Office 2010/2013 professional installed on client machine
I would like to understand following:-
    Installation Scenario:
1- on Office 2013 installed desktop, can I run office 365 Proplus installation on top of existing office 2013 client (standalone)
2- on Office 2010 installed desktop, can I run office 365 Proplus installation on top of existing office 2010 client (standalone)
    Uninstallation Scenario:
1- if existing Office need to be removed before deploying cloud Office, what is the best procedure to automate the installation of existing office client from desktop pc either using group policy or SCCM.
I am looking for fully automated uninstallation procedure irrespective of existing Office version or separately for Office 2010 and Office 2013 either using group policy or SCCM.
    Farrukh Anwar

    Hi Farrukh,
For the installation scenario, you can run the latest version of Office (click-to-run based version) side-by-side with an earlier version of Office that is already installed on your computer. That is to say:
MSI-based version of Office 2013 on a system with Click-To-Run-based version of Office 2013 (Office 365 Proplus ) installed side-by-side is not supported.
MSI-based version of Office 2010 and Click-To-Run-based version of Office 2013 (Office 365 Proplus ) will run side-by-side, but we don't recommend this for a long-term use.
Regarding the uninstallation scenario, you can automate the uninstallation of existing Office via
command line. It will look similar to the following example:
    \\server\share\Office12\setup.exe /uninstall ProPlus /config <pathtoUninstallconfig.xml>\UninstallConfig.xml
You can easily integrate this command line into SCCM or a Group Policy computer startup scripts.
Here is a great blog post about how to upgrade to the latest version of Office, you might want to have a look:

  • WSUS and click-to-run

Is there a reason Microsoft chose to subvert WSUS by building a separate update system in Office 2013 click-to-run versions?
Ken Kemp Eddy County, NM IT

What I understand is that it automatically applies updates with no input from the user or IT.  That sounds like a potential problem to me for the same reason we use WSUS rather than setting all our computers to automatically install every
    update Microsoft puts out.
Yep... which is why the CTR versions of Office are generally only SKU-ed for consumers and small businesses.
Enterprise SKUs provide MSI installers and support patching via WSUS.

  • Office 2013 Home and Business - Click to Run wipes out the Office files from the Programs folder

We are having an issue with a number of clients running Office 2013 H&B in a domain environment, after a click to run update.
It appears the update is ran in the background and after a reboot, the program files short of a few .DLL's are completely missing. Office still shows as installed through the control panel.
We have to use the office removal tool and reinstall program completely.  System restore does not fix the issue.
These are Dell Latitude and the version of Office shipped with the machines as an OEM version. There was nothing pushed from the Dell update utility for Office.
They are running Avast AV and it is not affecting all users presently.
I've been on hold and getting transferred around Microsoft's support lines all day as Microsoft support can't seem to figure out which department should troubleshoot the issue.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am doing some research. And I  might involve someone who is more familiar with this kind of issue to deal with this problem.
