Office Docs won't open from network drive

I can’t open any office  documents from a mapped network drive. I can however go to file explorer and go straight the server directory (\\servername\share) and open any document. As a workaround, I created a shortcut on the desktop that points to
the share to allow the user to continue working.
I have checked permission and added the path in Trust Center. I know it’s not the computer because I have logged in with other users and everything works fine. I have also logged into other computer with the user that is having the problem and again everything
works. I'm convinced it some setting I'm missing within the user profile on the computer.
The computer is running Windows 8 with Office 365 and is current on updates for both.
Any help is appreciated.
Sal

Hi,
Did you get any error message when you try to open an Office document from a mapped network drive?
Meanwhile, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
1. Temporarily turn off your firewall/antivirus program to check the result.
2. Try to disconnect the network drive and then reconnect it with the "Reconnect at logon" check box unticked.
3. You can have a look at the following KB article and check if it applies:

  • Custom Snippets won't open from Network Drive

    Hello All,
I'm using SQL Developer production release on a Window XP Svcpk 2 machine.
I have installed the extension to save snippets. My installation is on a network drive and I can open the "custom" snippets from that drive. However, if I move the snippets.xml to another network drive(one the entire department can see) SQL Developer doesn't open them. I have modified the sqldeveloper.conf to point to the location on the network drive as well as attempted to use a copy on my local hard drive. This may be a "feature" that it has to be in the jdev/extensions directory but it would be useful if the snippets.xml could be placed on a shared network drive. Don't think it is pertinent but I'm connecting to 10.1.0.5 DB(s) as well as an XE DB.
    Thanks for your input....

  • WORD WON'T OPEN FROM NETWORK DRIVE OR ANY LOCATION.

    Windows 7 Pro
    Office 2010 Standard
Computer is connected to the network drive domain.
Word is the only office program with this problem.
Whenever i Clicked on word file on network drive. Work tries to open then it just stop working. After that i tried to open it again and it tells me that will open in save mode.
Tried to reestablish connection with Network Drive, Repair Office, Re install Office.
    Any suggestion would be appreciated

    Hi,
This behavior may occur if the connection to the network location is lost during the time that your Word is opening the file. To work around this issue, add the
EnableShellDataCaching value to the Microsoft Windows registry.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Open Find
    DWORD: EnableShellDataCaching
    Value: 1
If above doesn't make any difference, please have a look at the following KB article and check if the scenarios apply:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313937/en-us
Please let me know the result.

  • Office files opened from network drive appear to be blank for Mac Users

    Hi all,
We've got five macs in our office running 10.9 with Office 2011, and we have a file server running 10.8 which stores all of our documents.
More often than not, when one of the macs opens a DOC or DOCX from the file server, the file opens up blank.
There aren't invisible fonts, doing a Select All and changing to black doesn't help.
The files appear to be fine when opened in Finder, or with LibreOffice (which my colleagues don't want to use!)
The files open correctly when the files are moved to the local hard drive and opened from there.
The files also open fine via the network on a Windows 8.1 PC with Office 2007.
Has anyone else had this problem, and got a workaround? I've been looking at this for a while but not found anything as of yet.
Appreciate any assistance you can give. :)
    Kind Regards,

    Hi,
Please have a look at this KB articel (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2434675) and try the steps listed in it:
Change the font in the Office for Mac file
Disable the fonts in the Fonts folder
    Check for bad fonts
Create a new Mac user profile
Also, this is the forum to discuss questions and feedback for Microsoft Office on Windows, we are lacking of skills and testing environment for Office for Mac. Better to post your question to the forum of Office for Mac:

  • InDesign won't open when network drive is not available.

    Hi everyone,
I have a laptop (MacBook Pro OSX10.9.5), which shares a network drive in my office. The drive is with a different computer. When I take the laptop out of the office network (to a meeting or home), InDesign will not open, it gives me the following error (see attached image). I've tried replacing the Defaults and SavedData files, and also re-installing InDesign from scratch. I still get the same error. Any idea what is happening or how to fix it? Thank you in advance.
    Rafa.

    Hi!
I figured out what the issue was, finally. After playing around, I noticed that my InDesign Fonts folder, had "alias" links to some fonts that resided on that shared drive. As soon as I deleted all the ones that where aliases, the error went away. Hopefully this helps someone in the future.
    Rafa.

  • MS Office attachments won't open from external sources in Office 2013

I have a client who is having an issue with MS Office attachments (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) not opening.  The error message is "[Office program] experienced an error trying to open the file".  This is Office Pro Plus 2013 (no SP) on Win 7
SP1 x64. There are users on same OS with Office 2007 SP3 that are able to open attachments without issue.
I've tracked the issue down to Protected View.  I've also found the acceptable answer for just about everyone that's asked is to uncheck or remove the Group Policy for "Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet" and/or
"Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments".
Unfortunatey, due to the environment that it's in, I am unable to make that change.  Does anyone know of an actual fix or workaround separate to this?
    Thanks,
    Kiel

    Hi Kiel,
Probably, you can find the location of those files, then add it to the
Trusted Locations of any Office applications:
    FILE>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings...>Trusted Locations>Add new location... button
(usually, the error message dialog contains the source location of those files.)

  • Quicktime 7.2 (and up) slow playout from network drive

Does anybody has a problem with all versions of Quicktime 7.2 (and up) where Quicktime Player doesn't play or open files very slowly from network drives? 7.1.6 works fine. This happens on all my machines.

    Hey Germac,
For me these invisible files were not stored on the desktop as the files i was working with were on an external drive but i guess if the file you are converting is located there or if the desktop happens to be where the resulting file is saved, it's likely these invisible .QT temp files will be created on the desktop.
I've sent info of this to apples quicktime feedback so hopefully they'll look into it.
Here are some apps that will allow you to view invisible files without using the terminal, i've been using the InvibliX app as it seemed to be the most recent and/or up to date but there are plenty to choose from.

  • Safari won't open from dock after upgrading to leopard

I've upgraded from OS X 10.4.11 Tiger to OS X 10.5.2 Leopard with the upgrade DVD which arrived today and all the available Software Updates (which included a Safari update). No more Software Updates are available - I've checked.
Safari and Mail will now not open from the Dock. Neither will iChat, AddressBook, iDVD (which produces a pop-up saying it "quit unexpectedly" - it didn't appear to start at all), and iCal. Safari and Mail WILL open from my Applications folder thankfully. I haven't checked the other mentioned applications, except iDVD which does the same non-opening with pop-up from Applications too.
I have run permissions verification and permissions repair from Disc Utility on the Mac HD. I have run disc verification from there too and the result said the disc appears OK. Neither solved the Dock problem.
The icons in the Dock don't bounce or anything. They remain still and un-animated. I just get a pop-up message saying "You cannot use the application "Safari.app" with this version of Mac OS X". Which surprises me as it's a native Apple Mac application isn't it? Obviously it says "Mail.app" for mail, "iChat.app" for iChat etc.
I reinserted the Leopard installation DVD and installed all the applications from the Optional Install.mpkg folder, including Safari and Mail. This has made no noticeable difference: they still won't open from the dock. I have just noticed that an additional icon for Safari appears at the far (right hand) end of the dock when I open it from Applications. But it disappears when I close Safari, so no good for opening it.
It could be worse, I can actually open some of the applications from my Applications folder. But this is inconvenient and besides, it is supposed to work from the Dock.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Can anyone help me to solve it please?
I have backed-up (not using time machine - I backed-up before I upgraded). I hope to avoid having to erase and reinstall but I will IF that will solve this problem (and not cause any others
    Help please. Thanks.

    Hi
Dock icons are simply alias. The ones on your dock may be corrupted, especially since you can open Safari from the applications folder. To remove an icon, right click on it and select "remove from dock", or simply drag it off the dock, where it will disappear in a puff of virtual smoke.
Then, go to the Finder and single-click/hold any item you want on the dock. Drag it there.
Try Safari or the other apps again.
Specific to the Leopard upgrade, important any 3rd party items installed in your system are Leopard compatible, otherwise you'll have operational problems when using them.
One other thought. It is possible the Dock is corrupted, causing the problem. If the above does not resolve the problem, go to the Finder: Your User Account>Library>Preferences folder. There, move the com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.dock.db files to the desktop, then relaunch the Finder (hold down the option/command/esc keys to reveal the Quit Panel. Select the Finder>relaunch.

  • Elements 13 won't open from iphoto

Elements 13 won't open from iphoto. I have gone in Preferences/Advanced/ and changed the Edit photos to Elements 13.

a single user license entitles the user to install and activate on up-to two computers.  but that license doesn't really permit that 2nd installation to be used by another person.
so, if you son was the user on your computer he could sign in using his adobe id on your computer and use pse on your computer (as well as his own -  but not both computers at any one time).
if a 2nd user (you) wanted to use pse, they should purchase their own license.

The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972).
This is a directory issue that Disk Utility cannot fix. Although it manifests itself as a software issue sometimes it may be hardware based. See DiskUtility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing avolume http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1901?viewlocale=en_US". You can try using a utility like TechTool Pro, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior to repair and replace the directory. Another option would be to use the Archive and Install feature to reinstall. If the problem returns after correction you may have a failing or failed HDD.

  • System Prefs won't open from Apple Menu

    Ay, ay, ay.
    Gigabit G4, Tiger
I couldn't get rid of the blue label on Applications/System Preferences so I created an "archive" of it, tossed the original in the trash and opened the archive. The renewed Sys Prefs gave me permission to change the label, but now it won't open from the apple menu. I guess its an alias there. Where would it be? How to fix it?
    Casey

    Hi,
In some cases "newer" version of an App will not run on Older OS software.
For instance Leopard's iChat 4 will not run in Tiger.
You say a clean install and do not say if you moved your Home Folder Contents back.
Your Mail would have been in there as would the Address Book info.
However related to the first item, you may have issues getting the older Tiger apps to read documents/Databases created by the newer Apps in Leopard.
