Office X - Word no longer opens files??

Any idea as to why Word no longer will open a file when I go to File-Open. The program locks up and I have to force quit. Excel and Powerpoint work. Software has been working just fine for months. Thanks for you help!

Trash Word's preference files or post your question on Microsoft's newsgroups as it's not really related to "Windows Compatibility."

I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:

So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk of your internal drive (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway) or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
#3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

I have been using the new version of ACR with PS6 and have been able to open the D750 files,now I'm stuck.

You were probably using the Release Candidate version of camera raw 8.7, which one gets from Adobe Labs.

Using PSE 10 on Windows. Can no longer open files in PSE 10?

Have used PSE 10 successfully for quite awhile. Can no longer open files in this program. Choose, "open file" in PSE 10 and nothing happens.

Dreamweaver CS3 no longer opens files

I am not sure where to post this, so I will post here - already have a question open on the Dreamweaver forums.
I have run into an unusual problem. I can no longer open files either on my local machine or remote server without Dreamweaver CS3 freezing. I am using OS X Leopard - 10.5.2 on an Intel MacBook Pro. A week or so ago I was able to open my .asp files just fine. Now, Dreamweaver simply freezes when I try and open them - either locally or remotely. I tried deleted the preferences file and removing site information from Manage Sites with no luck. I can create and open new files, but cannot open the existing files.
I copied the files in question to a PC and opened them just fine using Dreamweaver 8.02. I just don't know enough about the technical aspects to properly troubleshoot this problem. I already tried reinstalling also.
By the way, I am able to access, open and edit my files from the remote server using my PC and version 8.02.
Any ideas?

DW CS3 no longer opens files from SourceSafe

Dreamweaver CS3 no longer opens files from Visual SourcesSafe
2005 when you right-click and choose to View with DW, even if DW is
the registered application.
DW receives the focus, but nothing happens.
This used to function with DW 8. I have tried it on two
machines, both of which were fresh installs, so could not be
conflicting with DW 8 in anyway.

Numbers on iPad no longer opens files from iCloud

My wife uses her computer to update client files for work (running Mavericks), and her iPhone (iOS7). The problem now is that she uses the iPad during work hours while she is working with clients. We have the original iPad, which cannot update to iOS7, and so it cannot update to the newest version of Numbers. The iPad no longer opens any files that she edits on her computer or phone because they are both updated to the newer version of numbers.
The iPad is her primary need though for the files to work on, so how do we get files to open on the iPad and stay compatible even if edited on her phone or computer. This was never a problem before, but now that iOS7 has automatic updates, her numbers updated to the newest version and she can't go back. Even if we got the older version installed...I assume that the automatic updates would just update it again.
Is there anyway to get this sorted out so that the files just stay in the old format? Or so that the original iPad can open them?

Illustrator no longer opens files or saves changes w/ Mac

Since I downloaded a new Security Update (Snow Leapord 10.6.8) I can no longer open new files in Illustrator. Also when I open old files they will no longer save to PDF. Anybody else see this issue?

Links in Word no longer opening Adobe after upgrade

Word unable to open abobe files from links after upgrade.
This issue has occurred before because I have seen it several times
in the corporate environments. Something to do with version 5
upgrading to version 7 that breaks the ability to open adobe links
in word and I believe other MS applications. Actually I think it
has an issue opening just a saved adobe file form the desktop.
Was wondering if there is a fix for these issues.

Bridge no longer opens files using ACR!

I do have ACDSee Pro Photo Manager and perhaps this mucked with my installation.
I can no longer open pictures in ACR -- it defaults all formats to ACDSee Pro. Even though the preference is set to use ACR, no matter what I do ACR will not open in Bridge.
I have same problem with JPEG, DNG and ORF
How do I tell Bridge to use ACR again?

I have all the file types I want associates with Photoshop CS3.
If I double-click either a DNG or ORF, Bridge opens Photoshop CS3 first and then opens the file in ACR
If I double-click on a JPG, it opens it up directly in Photoshop CS3 and bypasses ACR completely even though I have the preference to use ACR set
Right now, the only way to open up a file I want in ACR is to right click on the thumbnail and choose open in ACR from the context menu. The ability to double-click and open in ACR is gone at this point.
Does anyone know how the context menu "open in Camera Raw" menu work? Maybe I can trick bridge somehow

I have not added any add-ons or extentions lately, and no updates lately within Firefox. Internet Explorer is working OK. Within my web email for example I need to browse to add attachments, and as of today Firefox will not allow this. When I click Open File nothing happens.

TextEdit no longer opens files it used to open just fine.

Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, TextEdit has been giving me an error message when I try to open various text files: "The document “CRD-FONT.TXT” could not be opened. Text encoding Unicode (UTF-8) isn’t applicable."
I wish I knew how to set TextEdit to open the file anyway. I am sure it can be done; it used to open these files just fine. The files didn't change.
I had to download and install another company's editor just so I could open files that I used to work with in TextEdit. It's good to have the other editor, but it'd be great if TextEdit went back to being able to open these files without complaint.
Is there a setting in prefs that would resolve this? I may have changed a setting without realizing it would cause this.

Sounds like there's something wrong with the file, though what that might be I'm not sure. I don't know enough about encodings to know, but sounds like there's probably a mismatch between the file's encoding and what the file claims its encoding is.
Try opening it with [TextWrangler|http://www.barebones.com/products/TextWrangler>, then choose Edit -> Document Options and see what the encoding is reported to be there.

Photoshop 7 no longer opens files

After using Ps 7.0 for a couple of months on my new Win 7 PC, it has stopped opening files. I can make it open one jpg file by deleting the preferences file, but then it won't open second file. It also won't start a new blank file. I updated it to 7.0.1, but that didn't do anything.
An odd thing that might be related: when I'm in the file manager and double-click on an image file to open it with the default viewer (one of the Microsoft viewers that came with the the computer), it sometimes doesn't work - it does nothing. Because it's also a problem opening files, I thought it was worth mentioning. Photoshop opens the program, but doesn't open files. It doesn't matter if I right-click in the file manager and try "open with", or go to Ps and try to open a file. It doesn't matter if it's a previously opened file that I try to select from the recent file list.

Try trashing any preference files Elements creates: user/Library/Preferences. Other than that try re-installing the software. You could also ask on the Adobe forum area at their web site.

Multiple instances of Word launching when opening files from Explorer window

I am seeing an odd behavior with Word 2010 (32 bit) that I could not replicate in earlier versions of Word.
Here are the steps:
Note: When performing these steps, I am on a 32 bit Windows 7 machine. Word is not running yet, and the Task Manager dialog is open with the processes sorted in reverse alpha order so that WinWord.exe will appear at the top.
1. Go to a folder containing a set of word documents or templates (all are in either .docx or .dotx format) in Windows Explorer.
2. Select a group of files (I am selecting 4 .docx files in my tests).
3. Right-click and select Open.
4. Four instances of WINWORD.EXE appear in the Task Manager (one of them then goes away, leaving only three instances running, but I think that's beside the point).
Could someone shed light on why this is happening with Word 2010 and if there's anything that can be done to make it "behave" and open only one instance?
PS - The templates contain no code, and no add-ins are loaded at the time that I perform these steps. Also, all Word and Office updates have been installed on the machine.

Koero, did you try the registry hack proposed in this forum?
I started getting multiple instances of Word 2010 two days ago in Windows 7 on my company PC after a reboot following a Windows updates pushed out by the IT department.
This also happened immediately after a Windows update on May
27, 2014, but somehow I was able to stop that behavior then. That fix happened after I restored a old copy of Normal.dotm but evidently that
was not the solution because restoring that copy did not fix the problem today.
The fix suggested by
peebs7384 in this forum on April 19, 2012 of changing the "Lay
out this document" setting did not work on my PC.
One support person who has both the 2010 and 2013 versions indicated that he also gets multiple instances with 2010 but not with 2013.
I plan to ask my IT department to attempt a fix tomorrow and will suggest that they try registry hack posted in this forum by

kit_jj's posting has only 1 vote & I would had hoped to see more votes. Now that I look more closely I see that this solution was "Proposed
