Officejet 4620 Refuses to print black!

Have an Officejet 4620 printer hooked to a Windows 7 computer that absolutely refuses to print any black ink. I've run a dozen print head cleanings, updated firmware and software and installed all new HP ink and nothing has helped. The printer hasn't printed a single ream of paper yet and already it's as useful as a doorstop.
I've performed every HP support suggestion with ZERO changes. The colors print perfectly, but not one pinpoint of black ink hits the paper.
I've been a computer nerd since 1973 and I know what clogged heads and low ink situations look like and this isn't it.
Furthermore, I am the "computer 'go to' guy" at my senior center and people ask me for help with their issues all the time. I've seen this exact same scenario on two other people's HP inkjet printers. One lady unplugged the machine and gave it to me then went and bought a new one. One lady's printer miraculously started print perfectly after two days.
My point is that there's something wrong with these printers that causes them to stop printing with black ink. HP support has no solution other than checking the venting, using authentic HP products, running head cleaning, etc.
Judging by the number of posts regarding this NO BLACK INK issue, this is not an isolated issue, but HP doesn't seem willing to acknowledge that there's a problem. Like other posters on this forum, it's starting to feel like I've been scammed.
Why do other inkjet printers have removable print heads, but the OJ 4620 doesn't?

  • HP Office Jet 4620 Will Not Print Black

I have had my HP Officejet 4620 for almost two years.  Until a couple of weeks ago, it was printing perfectly - no problems at all.  In the last couple of weeks, however, the printer is having problems printing in black.  At first, the black was rather staggered (e.g. the top half of a line would be black, bottom half of line would be grey or non-existent).  The only way to get it print consistently in black was to set the print quality to "best".  This only worked for a couple of days.  Now the black will only print out in the most very faded grey - almost invisible.  I have tried everything suggested on the forum - new cartridges, venting, alignments, printhead cleaning and so forth and so forth.  Nothing works.  I have run HP Print and Scan Doctor 4.3 but to no avail.  The printer simply appears to be unable to print any longer in black.  I notice that many people seem to be experiencing the same problem with no solution.  I am somewhat inclined to believe that there is a product deficiency or problem associated with this printer that HP does not want to discuss on the Forum.  I am at my wit's end.  The only solution I see is to purchase a new printer.  This is unfortunate since I hate to scrap a piece of hardward as new as this.  I also suspect there is no point in trying to get it repaired since the repairs will probably cost more than a new printer (my printer is no longer under warrantly).  Does anyone have any further thoughts, suggestins or comments?  Can someone from HP please explain why this problem seems to be so common and unfixable?  Many thanks!!

    Hi Donocan

  • Officejet 7110 won't print black only with empty color cartridges

There is a similar thread on this for the Officejet 6700, but I wanted to put it out there for the Officejet 7110 too.
When one of the color cartridges is getting LOW on ink, you start getting error messages for black and white printing. A prompt asks you if you want to print in just black ink, even though you have set all the settings in the dialog to black ink only. Strange, but at least you can keep printing in black ink only. Until...
When one of the color cartridges becomes EMPTY, you get totally cut off from printing in black ink only! You will be allowed to print NOTHING until you put in a new color cartridge!
I don't actually need to print color on this printer. I use it for half size check plots of engineerings drawings. Why on Earth would I need color cartridges to print black ink only checkplots? This is a total scam by HP to milk every last penny from the consumer.

I signed up for this forum just so I could respond to this thread.
After looking for an HP email address for support (that was also a joke), turns out its not simply a printer setting you can disable.
We also purchased this OfficeJet 7110 printer for strict use of black at the office.
Years and years of everyone saying, "Don't buy HP products, stop buying HP products, HP products are inferior." - to rephrase nicely.
Thought I would give it a shot, right out of the box the alignment was screwed up and took about 8 hours to fix and reprint the testing sheet (further sapping the colour cartridges). Now I can't even print in black. This nonsense about mixing colour to create a more true black, that's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Let me print in gray if the ink quality you supply is so terrible.
Will not buy another HP product again, and I will joint he hoard of many who will spread the good word.
To put it bluntly; HP - get your **shhit-frawking-bleep** together.

  • HP Officejet 6500 won't print black after power outages

We experienced a series of power outages last night. Now the black won't print at all. The print cartridge is fairly new, about a month old, scarcely used. All the color cartridges will print.
I've tried cleaning the print heads and running the alignment tests, but nothing can produce any black ink. For a pure text page with just black lettering and nothing else, the printer goes through the motions but nothing is printed.
I have a feeling that the power outages tripped it up somehow. Is there a way to undo this?
    thanks in advance

@Kenteeple and @oli22  If you make a copy, will that print black?

That did work, but not on my first try. For the second attempt, I left the wet paper towels in place for a couple of hours to really soak the print heads. That did the trick.

  • Officejet 4620 Brand new HP Black ink cartridge and it won't print black at all

Greetings, my printer recently ran out of ink. So I purchased a set of cartridges from Staples. I installed them and ran the Clean Printhead function. I now have great color and NO BLACK. I ran the clean printhead function numerous times. Its so frustrating to watch the evolution of printers over the last 2 decades go from reliable to unreliable all for the purpose of financial gains. I've had printers since the 80's, I used printers when they came with ribbon cartridges, which hardly failed, though they would indeed dry out. At least when they did dry out you would be able to put a new one in and continue. Now they have engineered replaceable printheads (because they were made knowing they will fail), ink cartridges that are not interchangeable (knowing that once you've had it with one printer model, you'll most likely switch to another brand or model) which uses a DIFFERENT model ink cartridge. All for finacial gain. Between my office and home, I've been through 4 printers in the last 2 years. I was a loyal Lexmark fan, untill my old one died and I purchased a new one, first thing I noticed was the changeable printhead, and I said to myself, uh oh, thats going to fail, and so said, so done, within 3 months of using the printer, Lexmark sent me 2 printheads and 2 sets of replacement inks free of charge. I still have a set of ink and a printhead because the LCD screen went blank, lol. Had to toss it. Ended up switching to HP which I believe is made in the same factory as Lexmarks after much comparison of models. Now I have the newest HP at my office and its been great thus far and SUPERB on ink usage, THUSFAR. I'm almost afraid to find out what my future has in store. I know I ran on alot off topic, BUT HP, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. I've now wasted $60 on a new set of cartridges and will most likely need a new printer since my warranty is expired. SMH. Bad Business!!!!

  • Officejet 4500 will not print black ink

Our small office has had an Officejet 4500 for a few months now with no problems. Today it has ceased printing any black ink.
-I have changed the cartridge to be sure, though at no point has it said low ink. This fixed the problem for a few pages but the problem popped back up. I did align the cartridges after installing the new cartridge.
-I have tried cleaning the contacts on the cartridge itself.
-The scanning function still functions and color ink can be printed.
-Overall printing does seem slower, regardless of the black ink issue. Not sure if related.
-The all in one has been used more frequently in the past few weeks.

For the Officejet 6500 you might try the soak procedure described here.

  • Officejet 6500 printhead not printing black ink

I just purchased a new printhead and it shows I have full new black ink cartridge, but it prints all colors except black.

    Hello bstimson1.
Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand your Officejet 6500, after purchasing a brand new printhead, is still not printing in black ink.
Now, buying a brand new printhead is not a guaranteed fix, but I can certainly try and resolve this issue. When purchasing this printhead, did you receive setup ink cartridges? Additionally, where did you purchased the printhead?
Did you clean the electrical contacts inside the product, before installing this printhead? I will provide an HP document on performing this step here.
Please follow this HP document on Common Print Quality Problems, as well. If you "Clean the Printhead" three times, you could see improvement.
Please inform me your troubleshooting steps.
Looking forward to hear from you.

  • Officejet 6500 won't print black

    Hi,
I have an Officejet 6500 AIO that will print any color besides black. We've already replaced the black toner cartridge, ran an alignment (which failed), and did 1st and 2nd level printhead cleaning, all with no improvement. I've been looking online and HP doesn't even sell replacement printheads anymore for this model, and the ones I could find from other vendors cost half the price of a new printer.
Anything else I can try before calling it quits and replacing the whole unit?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • HP Officejet 7000 Wide Format printing black AND white lines on photos

I am having some serious problems with my officejet 7000. I have contacted HP and have went through all the steps required (although all they could do is send me a new head and cartridges to help remedy the problem). This however has failed. Let me give a quick example of my problem. Although these 4 images are different in almost every way, they are printed on the exact same paper lol.
    <img src="http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/298367_2181658093219_999934383_32331922_448499237_n.j...">
The bottom two 4x6 are on HP Premium Plus photo paper.... Not cheap, and being wasted daily, trying to get this thing to print...
I finally had a break thru when I printed bordered on my 4x6 AND 8x10's.... The printer will work and print flawlessly on a bordered picture... This does not help me when the customers want a borderless picture though. When it is printing a borderless picture, it seems to be rushing through the process, but when it is printing bordered, it takes its time.... any ideas as to how to fix this?
It is a Windows 7 system. Ive tried wire and wireless printing to rule out communication failures. Which also concluded it is not software related due to reinstalling software for wire and wireless.
Sorry to rant, just getting fedup with what could be a great printer......
One more thing... Why cant you print 11x14 on a 13x19 page?!(no option for it  )

Sorry to hear about the issue you are facing.
There is an updated print driver for your product which was released:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4062&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3883...
Check if this newer print driver helps.
To answer your other query about selecting a different size media vs inputting different size, the printer actually does not allow it to protect it from overspray on the carriage.

  • Help-HP Officejet 6500-Won't print Black text

Well, I have tried all of the suggestions on this site.  My black ink gradually started fading out, so I assumed I needed a new cartridge, but that wouldn't print either, so I put back the old cartridge, which my computer said is half full.  I tried resetting the printer 2 or 3 times, tried disconnecting it with the printer both off and on at the time of disconnect, tried realigning twice, tried cleaning the vent hole on the cartridge (which doesn't look like there's even an opening, but it was working before, so it must be like that), and removing the cartridge holder and washing it in the sink.  It still does not work.  This printer is about 3 or 4 years old.  It has worked fine, but it's annoying, because every time you turn it on, it goes through this major resetting process, and it does that after about three or for print jobs, and you have to wait for it to finish.  We never could figure out how to set up the fax machine.  Does anybody have any other ideas about how to get the black ink to work?  I'm using up all my colored ink printing out these test pages!

It sounds like you have already done quite a bit of troubleshooting for this issue.  It sounds like the next step in troubleshooting is to test replacing the printhead.  However, before going that route try looking at the troubleshooting document that I will link below.
    Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues
    * With the printer being 3-4 years old I would say the printer is most likely out of warranty.  In this case, one would have to purchase the printhead to test if this resolves the issue.  The printhead can be purchase from the HP Parts Store using the part number CN643a.  It currently sells for around $70 usd.
With the price of the printhead, I would advise looking into a new printer.  The reason being that one could find a new printer for not much more than this and it would come with a full factory warranty.

  • My HP OFFICEJET 4620 SUDDENLY STOPPED PRINTING?

Have previously had great printing from my Toshiba Sastellite computer,  via my wi-fi connection, but
today wonb't print. The printer shows a good connection to wireless.
I have used the marvellous HP scan-dictor but this has noit fixed it. I have tried all day today and woyuld really appreciate any helpful replies.

try reboot the computer. some times the router gives the printer a new ip address (DHCP), and your computer remembered the old address. If reboot doesn't find the printer, try manually add it back.
If your router supports and you know how, it's best to reserve a fixed ip address for the printer.

  • New (Refurbished) OfficeJet 4620 printing red instead of black

Like the subject says... Recently purchased, refurbished OfficeJet 4620.  Fresh cartridges, tried cleaning the printhead, and all the connections/settings and suggestions found on http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c03137135 to try to fix it... still can't figure it out...

    Hi JD8,
    Welcome to the HP Forums
I understand you have an Officejet 4620 that is printing red instead of black. I'd be happy to help you resolve this, I just need to gather a bit more information!
Is this happening when printing just from the printer as well as the computer? To test this, if you're not sure, please print this Network Configuration Page as it is supposed to print out entirely in black.
If that works fine, and it only seems to be happening from your computer, would you be able to tell me which version of Windows or Mac you're working with, as well as how the printer is connected to said computer?
If it also prints in the red as opposed to black, please have a look through this Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages and hopefully these steps are of help to you.
Hope this helps, have a great day!!

  • Officejet 4620 everytime printer print incoming documents it spits out one piece of blank paper

Everytime the printer prints an  incoming document it spits out one piece of blank paper at the end.  How can I stop that?

    Hi Georgi23,
    Thanks for the response!
In Windows 7 you will click your Start menu, and click Devices and Printers on the right (or Control Panel and then Devices and Printers). In Devices and Printers, right click on the Officejet 4620 and select Printer Properties (you may then have to select the printer driver instead of the fax driver). In the Print Properties Window, select the Advanced tab at the top and then locate the Separator Page... button in the bottom right corner of the window that opened. Once you click that button a small window will open. If there is any text or anything in the white space, remove it (using either the Backspace or the Delete button) and then click OK, then on the previous screen click Apply before clicking OK.
Now when you print there should no longer be a separator page. Let me know how these steps work out for you
