Officejet 5740 from mac OS 10.5.8

I just purchased an Officejet 5740.  I set it up as a network printer using  a Windows 7 laptop.  I have been able to print from the laptop and from a Windows 7 desktop but I have not been able to find a driver to install the printer to my wife's MAC laptop.  The MAC is running OS 10.5.8.  I have updated the MAC OS but cannot find a driver for this printer.  Is the driver available? If there is not a driver for this printer is there another driver that would at least allow printing from thr MAC is not copying or scanning?

Hi @Ed_S,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you are looking for a driver for your HP Officejet 5740 for your Mac OS X 10.5.8 computer. I am happy to look into this for you!
According to your printer's specifications found at this website, Printer Specifications for the HP ENVY 5640, 5660, 7640, and Officejet 5740 and 8040 e-All-in-One Pr.... The minimum system requirements for Mac are:
OS X v10.10 Yosemite
OS X v10.9 Mavericks
OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion
OS X v10.7 Lion
So I am sorry to say there does not appear to be any drivers available for this printer on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
The best options are to either upgrade the Operating System to Mac OS X 10.7. (If your hardware allows it). Or to upgrade the printer to one that has drivers available for Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Hope this information clears things up, and have a good day!

I have bought the HP all-in-one Officejet 5740 from the ebay from Italy but no Greek menu. Is there a way to solve the problem!Thank you.

Hi,I afraid not, Printers are manufectured for a specific market, a printer purchased from Italy will not have any language available.. If Greek is not an option within its menu, it cannot be added to the printer. Regards,Shlomi

  • Scanning directly into Photoshop Elements 8 from Officejet 5740

I just installed an Officejet 5740 All-In-One. I did the standard install and am able to print fine. I would like to be able to scan directly into Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 running on Mac OSX 10.10. When I go to the File>Import menu, the new device doesn't show up. Is there something else that I need to install or configure for this to work?

Hey , Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are experiencing issues when scanning from your HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer to Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 on your Mac OS X 10.10 computer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this scanning issue. Now, your product is fully supported when scanning through the HP Scan software and the Mac Scan software on your computer. Therefore, to start troubleshooting I would like you to confirm that the supported software functions with your machine. Can I please have you follow the steps below.  To start troubleshooting please click here. Once the support document opens please click the drop down for 'Scanning a Photo or Document'. Next, follow the steps listed to complete the scan under the supported HP Scan or HP Utility Software.  If the scanner fails to perform under the HP software then a driver issue may be occuring. Should this be the case please follow the steps below to confirm that the correct HP Officejet driver is being utilised by your printer and not the Apple Airprint driver.
    1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences. 2. Click Print & Scan, and then check if the name of your printer displays in the Printers list. 3. Click the name of your printer, click the minus sign (), and then delete the printer.  4. Click the plus sign (), click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, 5. Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select the name of your printer in the pop-up menu. Ensure that the Officejet driver is selected and not the Airprint.   6. Click Add to add the printer to the list.  Once the printer has been confirmed as installed with the HP driver, please test scanning through the HP Scan software again. Once you're able to scan successfully through the HP Scan software please test scanning through the Adobe Photoshop software again.  Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck!

  • OfficeJet Pro 8500 SLOW Networked via wire Takes 5 mins+ from Mac

Our OfficeJet Pro takes 5+ mins to spit out a print from Mac OS X (10.5.8) via a wired network connection. Windows machine print to it immediately.

I had the same problem.  This seems to have worked for me: I configured the printer with a static IP address (see below).
Then I went to the Print & Fax control panel, hit "+" to add a printer, clicked "IP" and then put in the static address.  It filled in the rest without any problem.
Giving the printer a static IP address is pretty easy to do if you have experience with networking; you need to choose an address on your subnet (often 192.168.1.xxx) which is not in the range given out by your router's DHCP server (your router's DHCP configuration page should tell you what this is).  The "subnet mask" is almost always "255.255.255.0" .  You can set the configuration either from the printer's web interface, or from the control panel.
    Hope this helps!

    Hello JFM2015 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having some scanning issues when attempting to scan to your Mac.
I suggest we start off from scratch.
Remove the usb cable from both Mac and printer and leave it disconnected until further notice.
The first link that I have for you gives instructions on How to reset the printing system.
The next step that we are going to take is to Repair disk permissions.
Once the first two steps are done, we will then go and download and install the HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers.
The installation will give you connection options so please do not connect any cables until prompted to do so.
Write me back and let me know you made out.

  • HP Officejet 5740 Scan Noise

My brand-new HP Officejet 5740 (which has the latest firmware) seems rather grumbly/rumbly when it scans.  It's not very smooth-sounding.  Copying, however, has a less loud grumbly/rumbly sound.
5740 owners/users/HP employees: I know sound is subjective, but is this normal?  I don't scan that often and could get used to the sound if that is a "normal" sound, but if it is an indicator of something being wrong...
(Note: I have also recently been using a HP Officejet 6830, and it is much quieter/smoother-sounding when scanning.)

    Hey @HPPrinterUser10,
Thanks for posting in the HP Support Forum.
I understand that you're finding your HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer to be loud when it scans.  I would like to assist you with this.
Is your printer situated on a flat, stable, 'wobble-free' table or desk?  Sometimes printer location can contribute to the overall audio output of regular printer functions.
I do have access to both of the printers you're referring to and was able to test scan from each.  The sound quality and volume output seemed pretty close between the two units.  If I am interpreting the 'Acoustics' specifications presented in each model's datasheet correctly, the 5740 is rated to be slightly louder.  Click here and here for reference.
In your setup, I would only be concerned if the printer's emitting a squealing sound or grinding sound, as this would indicate a potential hardware issue.
So, to answer your question more directly, I wouldn't be overly concerned about the sound of your 5740 scanning unless it intensifies or if it's concurrent with a decrease in functionality.
I hope this helps.  Let me know if you have any further questions or run into any issues - I'm always happy to assist.
    Have a great day!

  • Fax keeps ringing on Officejet 5740

I just purchased an Officejet 5740.  It is hooked up to a fax line - a line used only for faxes.  When I print something (or sometimes when I don't) the fax will ring but there will be no fax.  This happens over and over again.  The tech said to take out the power cord for a minute...which I did.  Unfortunately, while he was on the phone it did ot ring so it looked like this solved the problem.  It did not.  It keeps ringing every few minutes.  Can you help?  It seems that HP does not have an email where I can email my question/issue.  Thank you.  My email is[edited email by moderator].

    Hi @thsenterprises
I have never heard of this type of issue. I checked for a firmware update for your model and didn't one.
Do you have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet or is it in a surge protector or power bar? Even if you have been using a surge protector/power bar all this time and you feel it is not the cause, please connect it to a wall outlet just so we can eliminate the power source as the root cause.   Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector
In this document you will see, ISSUE: Problems or issues may arise when an HP LaserJet series printer is connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), a power strip, or a surge protector
^ This is not limited to Laserjet printers.
If the persists, or the power cable was already connected to a wall outlet, I suggest calling us back again. If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
HP printers generally have a 1 year warranty from their purchase date, you can verify the warranty using the following link if you issuewould like; warranty check.

Most office jet printers are not very smart, so you may have to run a setup program (included in the download) to "discover" the printer.

    Welcome to the forums!
    @HP-OJ-5740-ARGH
I understand your HP Officejet 5740 is not functioning properly, and I'd like to try to help!
As I read your post, you mentioned that test pages will not print, which is first concerning as this points out a hardware problem. The hardware issue will need to be dealt with first and resolved before any software troubleshooting can be done.
I would suggest a power reset to start with and then try making a couple of copies after the printer starts back up.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
Please let me know if the copies work and we will go from there

  • Web Services set up problems - Officejet 5740

I have bought an Officejet 5740 - a very nice printer that Im very happy with.  BUT....my main reason for choosing this printer was for the Instant Ink service and the ink costs we would save in our small business.
However, I have tried and failed on so many occassions to set up the web services!
Every time I try and set it up (using the printer itself) I get the message
'The printer could not connect to web services.  The server might be busy or temporarily unavailable.  Try again later.'
Well I have tried again later and Googled the issue but I am not so technically advanced I understand DNS etc (although I did follow someones instructions to change this but it didnt help either).
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
I can offer some ideas that may help.
You might try connecting the printer using EWS (Embedded Web Server) -- this is a much easier interface to use because it allows you to sit at your keyboard rather than stand at the tiny printer panel.
Assuming the printer is on your local wireless or wired network in your office, connecting to EWS is a simple matter of using your favorite browser to talk to the printer's IP address.
The instructions are in your printer's User Guide  on Page 31.
An Example of using EWS is included in the following instruction Guide - scroll toward the bottom:
Install Full Feature Software – Printer
If you have the services of an Internet Service Provider for your Internet at your Office, say from Xfinity or from AT&T, then this is the "ISP"  IP Address that you need for your Printer when it is connected to the Internet.
If you do not have your own Internet Service Provider, then you can use the Free Google DNS service.  Understand that Free is also "free of support", "free of privacy", and "free of guarantees" -- In other words, there are none of those.  Nonetheless, lots and lots of people use the service and manage full, successful Internet lives.

  • Why does my brand new HP Officejet 5740 have extremely poor quality scan results?

My brand new HP Officejet 5740 has extremely poor quality scan results!
Excessive and unacceptable amounts of white specs appear in the resulting  jpegs, of what are  perfectly clean, orignal, dark,  documents, pages and  photos,  when placed into the scanner.  Why is this happening???
Has anyone else experienced this problem?  If so, how did you resolve it?

    Hi @mpstone1,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are not happy with the scan quality on your new HP Officejet 5740, when you scan something you are getting alot of white specs.
I would like you to first perform a Hard Reset on the OJ 5740:
    1. Unplug all cables and memory cards from the printer. Unplug the power cord, directly from the back of the printer while the printer is still turned on.
    2. Unplug the other end of the cord from the power source.
    3. If there is a power module on the power cord, disconnect one end and reconnect it.
    4. After 60 seconds, plug the cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector or battery backup as they can cause the printer to lose basic functionality over time).
    5. Plug the power cord into the back of the printer.
    6. The printer should automatically power back up. If it doesn't, turn it on with the power button.
    7. Try making a photocopy (if your printer is an all-in-on printer) before connecting any other cables to the printer.
    8. Connect any other needed cables to the printer.
Please continue here: Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Faxes, or Scans, complete the steps listed, make sure the scanner lid is fully down when powering on, do not lift the lid until the printer is fully initialzied.
If after the troubleshooting has been done the copy quality has not improved, contact our technical support at 800-474-6836 as it may be the hardware and you would still be in warranty. cannot send email from icloud account from mac running 10.8.2

The SMTP server you are using with Wi-Fi would be the outgoing server of your internet service provider... this is likely why that's working.
SMTP servers specific to a ISP would not work on the 3G network. You would probably need another SMTP server. One from your cell provider?
