Officejet 6000 using color ink when set to greyscale black and white only

I have two new Officejet 6000's and both run out of color ink even though I have them set to print greyscale black and white only.  I almost never use color.  The drivers are the latest versions.   Connected via ethernet cord.  Vista Home Premium 64 bit.  Color ink is too expensive to waste it like this.  Does anyone have a reason and/or a solution why the color ink is running out when I have it set to black and white only?
Apparently it is an issue with some others too.  See this thread on the 6500: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-printing-and-scanning/HP-OfficeJet-6500-will-not-print-using-black-...

I know these posts are old, but.
To force the print to print even though some carts are empty or expired. Turn the printer off. Then hold the feed button while turning the printer on. Keep the feed button pressed for about 4-5 seconds after powering on the printer.

  • My photosmart C7250 all-in-one used to allow me to print black and white only, now it won't

My photosmart c7250 all-in-one used to allow me to print in black and white only if I changed properties to print in grayscale, black and white only.  Now it says it won't print until I replace one of the empty color cartridges.  I do no understand why the color cartridges are running out when I only use my black cartridge.

I still don't understand the difference between what I used to be allowed that I'm not allowed now.  I was able to bypass the empty color cartridges by changing my print property to "grayscale" and "black only".  Now I'm not allowed to bypass???

  • HP 8500 All-in-one printer - how can I print in black and white only (to save color ink)?

I want to be able to select the option of printing in black and white only to save color ink.  How can I do that?

What operating system? You can generally find an option for "Print in grayscale" and "Black ink only" in the Color or Advanced tab of the Printer Settings.
Some color ink will still be used to keep the printheads from clogging, see here for information.  (The Officejet 8500 is an IIC printer in the vocabulary of that page.)

  • I can not print black and white only documents and I have a full black ink cartridge

I have been an loyal HP customer since the orginal laserjet in the early 90s and then many inkjets from HP after that.
I bought an HP 6600 All in one for the house and have only ever printed in black and white.
For some reason one of the color ink carts is empty after a few months of black and white only printing.   No problem - I only print in black and white - or so I thought.
Nothing I have been able to do (aside from buying a color cart I don't need) is able to tell the printer to not worry about color and only use the black and white cart.  Past inkjets from HP didn't have a problem with this.
Please tell me HP didn't do this on purpose and is going to trying and justify the need for me to buy any color carts if I never print in color.  HP - if you did and you are going to try and tell me you neeeded to do this for any reason then someone please sign me up for the class action lawsuit if you are an attorney looking for plaintiffs.
However, I am sure I am overlooking some simple setting on the 6600 to move past this annoyance.
    Thanks!

    Hi Atlanta90210,
We appreciate your brand loyalty, and I'm very sorry for the frustration this has caused.
There is a lot of good information in Cannot Print When One of the HP Ink Cartridges is Empty. It explains how your printer works and how it is designed. Another good resource is posted here.
In the first link I mentioned, there are steps to print with black ink only. I have a similar printer to this at home (with the same print mech), and I have found that the steps to print with black ink only have saved me lots of ink.
There needs to be ink in all the cartridges for this printer to continue printing (after the cartridge's reserve mode is depleted). Once you have replaced the empty cartridges, you can change the print settings to print with only black ink so the printer doesn't use color ink. Until then, there is not a way to bypass this.
I know this is not the answer you were hoping to receive, but I do hope it was helpful.
I'd be happy to help you with any other questions or concerns.

  • How do I set my printer to black and white ONLY?

I have an HP Photosmart All-In-One C4480.  I don't want to have to buy color cartridges, because I only need black and white, and I have three black and white cartridges already.  How do I set the printer to print my documents in black and white only?
    Thanks,
    TW

    Hi,
Follow the steps below to print using Black Ink only:
    1. From the application used to print, click the File menu and select Print. The Print window appears.
NOTE: The Print window might be minimized: Click the Show Details button to see all available settings.
    2. To access the color options, click the lowest selection box listed as the name of the program (e.g. TextEdit)
Will appear as Copies & Pages within Microsoft Office applications.
    3. Select Paper Type/Quality from the drop-down menu.
    4. Click the triangle next to Color Options to expend the settings.
    5. Set the Color field as Grayscale.
    6. Set the Grayscale Mode as Black Ink Cartridge Only.
You may save the settings for future use by clicking Presets > Save Current Settings as Preset...
Any used preset will remain default so simply select teh standard preset to print in color.

  • How to set black and white only on Photosmart Plus B210a

I just buy my HP Photosmart Plus B210a at staples on 25. Usually I will just print some word documents,I want to set to use black and white only (black ink only), but can't find it.

    Hi espressoking,
I understand that you are looking to print grayscale from your iPad.
I have included 2 different documents about using Apple's AirPrint.  The first one is from Apple and the second one is from HP.  If you find that the option to print in grayscale isn't available with AirPrint then I suggest you check out HP's ePrint app.  It gives you the options to print 'Color, 'Grayscale', or 'Black Only'.
For further reference I have also included a document about getting started with the HP ePrint app.

  • Blurb Color Book Converted to Ibookstore (looks black and white?)

Any chance my COLOR ebook from blurb would end up converted to black and white in ibookstore? Itunes approved the book. I assumed it would look exactly the same. Any way to preview it?

That's a result of the printer using colors to provide the black color.  Don't remember the exact reason but it has to do with using the colors. Try this:  go into the printer window under the Printer preferences and look for an option to print Grayscale.  I believe that forces the printer to use only the black in cartridge in printing and should get rid of the cast.
This is also a problem that Apple warns users of when ordering books with black and white photos, a magenta cast.

  • Adding color to an object in a black and white photo

Can someone please help? I just bought Aperture and I was wondering if it is possible to add color to an object in a black and white photo? or keep an object in color and turn the rest of the picture into black and white?
    Thanks

    Hi
I am 90% sure this cannot be specifically done in Aperture as it can in Photoshop.
I assume you mean adding spot colour to a B&W photograph.
You can choose an external editor such as Photoshop, if you have it, create the effect, and re-import the image back into Aperture.
There are some powerful colour controls for selectively improving colour in a photo within Aperture. Whereby you can make a particular colour stand out more by selectively adjusting the red, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow colour's. These are accessed via the colour controls in the adjustments inspector.
You can create B&W images with two tones (of your choice) by using the Monochrome mixer ( in the adjustments panel )
Or you can create colour monochrome effects by using the colour monochrome effects slider ( in the adjustments panel, where you see a + sign with a downward pointing arrow ) click the arrow and select "colour monochrome" from the menu, it will appear at the bottom of the adjustments panel.
Give some of these a go..... play around with it, you can get some stunning result's..........
    Hope this helps some.......

  • Why is my printer HP Officejet 6600 using color ink even though I'm not printing in color?

I've had this printer about a year now. I've replaced the entire line of ink cartridges at least 3 times now, working on 4. I don't print much at all. A couple of sheets a day or so. I always thought that it was using color ink very quickly so I thought I'd put it to a test. I changed the default settings to black ink only. I replaced all of the ink cartiridges, color and black. I decided this time I wouldn't print anything in color just to see what happened. Well the same thing is happening as if I were using color ink. The color ink is draining out much quicker than the black ink. This seems weird to me. Now we are at the point where it won't print unless I replace the magentia cartridge. This also seems unfair that they do not mention this clearly when you purchase the item. Something like "Oh, by the way, we aren't making enough money doing business as we should, so we will make you replace your ink supply even though it really isn't necessary and that should pick up the slack". I've paid for a new printer already with ink costs. Is there a way to get around this or am I stuck with it. Thanks.

When you set the printer to print in grayscale did you also select "Black ink only"?
HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.
Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example.
Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 8600 printer.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printheadvor burned out printhead firing resistors. The Photosmart 6600 series is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.
The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.

  • Why doe's my 8500A printer use color ink when printing black and also when unit is cleaning

I only print in black. I am required to buy all the colors because my printer will not operate when any cartridge is empty.
I was informed at Office Depot that all printers operate this way.  According to them it also uses ink when it goes through
    the cleaning cycle.
The XL ink package at Office Depot  (black, yellow, cyan, magenta) is $97.00 + tax.
I hope someone has a logical answer why this is set up this way.
Why do I need colors to print black?

The 8500A takes 4 ink cartridges and 2 printheads (one for black/yellow, and another for the other two colors). This design is so that you have have larger ink cartridges (stationary on the side, the printer only moves the printhead during printing). A drawback is, you have to have all the cartridges in, without the ink cartridges, the printheads could be damaged and would cost more to replace.
Printing black text uses black ink only, it does not use color ink. The "Clean printhead" function does print a color page and uses color ink, but you only need to do this when you notice lines missing (printhead clogged) in the printout.
If you print mostly black only, choose a model that uses cartridges that has a printhead built in. These printers typically can still print black with color ink out.

  • How can i make my officejet 6500a print in black and white only?

I just bought an officejet 6500a and I can't figure out how to make it print in black in white only.  I print a lot of stuff that doesn't need color and want to save my ink. On some prints it gives me that option when I print. but for the most part it doesn't allow me to change to black and white on things i am printing off the web

Pages 30-34 of the user manual for the Officejet 6500A covers how to change print preferences for the printer with both Mac and Windows. It covers documents, brochures and photos and covers finding the gray scale option. Here is a link to that manual http://goo.gl/6J61R .
    I hope that this helps.

  • How do i get Firefox to print web pages in black and white only (colors are interpreted in grayscale and some are too light to be read)?

i have a black and white laser printer. Firefox prints web pages by sending color images to my printer. The printer uses greyscale to interpret the colors. i really want Firefox to send black and white images to my printer, because with greyscale some of the colors are translated to print that is too light to be seen clearly.
    Can this be done?

  • Why when i convert to black and white and change, contrast, exposure etc and get it right in preview i open it and its brighter and looks different to the preview?

The images also look different in preview and when i upload them to adobe Revel but when i put them back in photoshop they look Ok.

I convert, in raw to black and white and add sharpness and clarity theirs and a few other options Temp etc if need be. Then i open them into photo shop as black and white. There i place around with the exposure setting but as you do it you have the preview button clicked so you see what the finished photo will look like. When i hit change normally the photo changes and looks like it was in the preview. But now with out changing any settings in photoshop, as i change the photo the preview is different when i click ok to make the changes. This comes and goes in photoshop and its getting a bit frustrating as i do a lot of black and white photos and have been doing for years but i am having this problem over the last 6 months.
No i haven't changed colour settings i have photoshop on the preset settings.
'Preview" when you are changing contrast etc their is the preview option so it shows in photoshop what the changes will be. But what i see when i am changing it is different when i open it. make be a point brighter or not as contrasty as i see it as i am changing the settings.
