Officejet 6400 Prints "Best" Mode Only

No matter where "Print Quality" is set, I get only "Best" mode print quality.  I have reloaded the printer firmware and the drivers in my PC (XP OS).  Nothing changes.  The problem occurs from multiple PC's on my LAN so it is likely not in the drivers.  Any sugggestions?

The most likely case would be the failure of the automatic paper sensor.  If you have "automatic" paper type selected try selecting "Plain Paper" instead.
If this corrects the issue then you may have success cleaning the sensor with a damp Q-TIP.  The sensor is contained at the bottom of a small black rectangular protrusion on the lower right side of the carriage that holds the cartridges.
If this does not correct the issue please provide some details of the issue.  How does the printer show it is in best mode?  The solution I gave assumed the printer was printing in photo paper mode, which results in many many passes of the printheads on the page. There are other causes of slow printing that may apply.

  • Officejet j5780 all-in-one; print in Black only

I do not require color print capability on my j5780, I want to print in Black only (I also own a Photosmart 6380 for color needs).
A new Black cartridge has been installed and the spent tri-color cartridge has been left in-place.
PROBLEM: The printer's LED window now displays the message "Cartridge error: Cartridge on the left [i.e. tri-color] must be replaced."
Prior to replacing the Black cartridge I was able to print in Black only; now, it appears that capability has been lost. I do not want to install a new tri-color cartridge (particularly at HP's price) just to restore Black-only print capability.
QUESTION: Is it possible to reset, or otherwise over-ride, the printer's color cartridge requirement to in order to achieve Black-only printing?

    Hello DisgustedOne,
What may have happened is that while you were printing in black only, the black ink may have ran out, then the printer started using the tri-color cartridge to create black. When the tri-color cartridge ran out, you replaced the black, but are still getting an error to replace the tri-color cartridge.
Some HP printers allow for what is called backup mode, where the printer only uses one of the two cartridges, an example can be found in the following link:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01625311&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
There are a couple things you can try:
    1. Set the printer to print in black only (can be done in the printer prefs, usually under a grayscale setting)
    2. Take out the color cartridge altogether and see if it will print.
If both of those options fail, unfortunately, you will need to replace the color cartridge.

  • Officejet Pro 8620 will not print old documents, only newly created ones

When I use the driver designed for the printer I can only print documents (Word, Excel, and Publish 2007) that are new, as long as I have not copied and pasted or inserted sheets from previously created documents.  It will not print any Outlook 2007 emails but it prints PDF's fine. Also, the printer works fine with driver for deskjet 990c but limits my options on page size and the margin on the right side won't change and are way to big for most of my documents.  Any thoughts?

    This is very peculiar @bmphr

  • HP Officejet 6700: No Option To Print In Black Only/How Do I Do This?

I recall this option used to be present, now I no longer see it--how do I print in black only?
    Thank you.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    I found it:
It's now under File, Print, Preferences, Advanced, Print In Greyscale, then drop box Black Ink Only.
I'd like to thank me for my help one this one...couldn't have done it without me.

  • Make my HP OfficeJet 4620 print in black ink only, permanently.

I want my printer to always print in black only, on draft quality. I have gone to Devices and Printers > Printing Preferences > Advanced and changed Print in greyscale to "Black Ink Only". I've also made the same change by going to the page I wish to print and going CTRL+P > Properties > Advanced and making the same changes.
However, my printer automatically reverts to printing in full colour after only one document i.e. every time I print a new document the changes are undone and it reverts to full colour.
It is far too time consuming to repeatedly change the settings every time I print something, I have to print around 70 separate documents every morning! How to I make this change permanent?
I'm using Windows 8 if that helps.
    Thanks!

    Hello MarkC-S,
    Welcome to the HP forums!
I understand you tried changing the print settings to "Black Ink Only", but it's reverts back to color ink. As you stated, the print settings seem correct and it should be sticking permanently. How is this printer connected? Wireless or USB? I would recommend uninstalling the software.
Please follow this HP document on Uninstalling From Programs and Features.
Next, clean out your Temp folder on your computer:
On the keyboard, hit the Windows key and "R" key together, then type %temp%. Hit enter.
Press "Ctrl" and "A" together. This will highlight everything. Right click on your mouse and select delete
Now, install the full feature software from the HP website here. Choose your correct operating system; Either 32 bit or 64 bit. If you need help installing the software, then please follow this HP document here. Choose your correct connection type.
After the installation is complete, please let me know if the "Print in black ink" sticks this time!

  • Printing best practices

I've been asking a bunch of questions recently on TS printing and realize that I should just start from scratch. Since I'm not sure what best practices are for this environment, I would like to get everyone's opinion.
    This environment:
20 Server 2008 R2 TS' and approximately 200 fat clients (mixed XP and 7). Currently, all network printers are installed on each TS individually (not shared). We also have about 10 USB printers that redirect. Our network printers are set up on 5 different local
servers since we have multiple locations. We print both from local desktops and terminal servers.
What we need is for all network printers to be on each server like they are currently but I'd like to eliminate the need to manage each one on each and every server whenever there is a change. Our current environment was set up by previous IT personnel and
I'm not sure if it's optimal
I understand there are multiple ways to deploy printers but I don't know what is best for our environment. I've tried Print Management but I need to be able to set preferences. I've tried GPP in Computer Configuration but it doesn't seem to work (possibly because
of the current set up). I would like to know how others would manage the printers in this environment, even if I need to delete everything and start over. I am also inexperienced with servers and group policy so I will ask follow up questions to most responses.
    Sorry in advance!
Edit:To be more clear about my scope of knowledge- I know where the Active Directory and Group Policy Management reside. I have modified existing group policies
but not made new ones. Since all of our changes always apply to all users/terminal servers/roaming profiles, I've never needed to create OU's or use any kind of item-level targeting so I am not familiar with those.
Also, I would greatly appreciate not being redirected to another site/forum for answers. I've read hundreds
and am getting mixed responses since I'm not sure what is appropriate for this particular environment. That and because I need layman's terms :) Thank you!

    Hey Lynnette
I read through some of the other questions you were asking.
Deployed Printers from Print Management is only for adding printer connections, it's not for adding local printers and Deployed Printers does not support setting a default printer.
Group Policy Preferences supports adding local printers and connections.  It can be used to set the default but not sure if that's for connections or local printers.
If the end result is to have the same configuration of local printers on multiple machines, I suggest using \windows\system32\spool\tools\PrintBRM.exe to backup the local printers from your Primary machine, then restore to all the other targets.
You can create a scheduled task to perform the backup and restores.
If you are looking to add printer connections in the "Computer" context (all users logging on will get the connection to the shared printer), you can achieve this using the local machine policy or using a domain policy that only applies to a specific
set of computers.  But once again no default is set but it's fairly easy to set the default with printui.exe or prnmngr.vbs both included with the operating system.

  • LOVs in Print Friendly Mode

    Hi,
I have a page item of type Display as Text (based on LOV, saves state). The page shows the display value ("Pending" in this case). However, when I launch the page in Print Friendly mode, it shows the return value ("2"), instead of the display value ("Pending").
This also occurs for any other select lists on my pages if the select list is read only.
    Any ideas or workarounds?
    Thanks,
    Chaunaci

yes, this does appear to happen for items of type "Display as Text(based on LOV, saves state)", but things seem to work fine for my select list items in the production version of htmldb. i'll log the issue in a bit, but two ways to work around it for now would be to:
    1) add an extra item to your page that would render correctly in printer friendly mode. use our built-in condition types of "Current Page Is in Printer Friendly Mode" and "Current page is NOT in Printer Friendly Mode" to determine which/when of your two items should be displayed.
    2) tweak your LOV query a little bit to pay attention to the api variable, htmldb_application.g_printer_friendly. it's a boolean that returns true if your app is in printer friendly mode.
if you really are seeing this behavior with select list items, could you please provide more specifics as to how those items were set up?
    thanks,
    raj
[Edited by: rmattama on Apr 1, 2004 1:26 PM]
i now see the issue w/the select lists occurs in read-only mode. gotcha. didn't read that right the first time. i'll add this to the bug rpt.

  • How do I print standard 6 3/4" standard size envelopes from an hp 8600 officejet pro printer?

How do I print 6 3/4" standard size envelopes from an hp 8600 officejet pro printer. This printer has this size on the tray and has this size listed in the printer set up on the printer, but the drop down boxes from my computer to set up the printer do not have this standard size listed. I keep getting messages on my printer that it is not set for the right size. I have a list of supported envelopes and their numbers for this printer but which one of these other numbers is the same as the 6 3/4" standard size envelope. I have an operating system of windows 7 with an older version of publisher. Everything else prints ok from publisher & the printer, just not the standard size envelopes of 6 3/4".
    Please help!

    Hi indy-girl,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are trying to print 6 3/4" envelopes from your HP Officejet Pro 8600, but keep getting an error 'printer that it is not set for the right size'. After taking a look at the Supported envelopes sizes, the 6 3/4 is not supported. See below:
I was able to take a look at the 8600, the only thing I am seeing listed on the paper tray is Legal/Letter, and the 4x6". I am not seeing the 6 3/4 size.
    I hope this helps!

  • HP Officejet 4500 = Printing problem

    Hello,
I have an HP Officejet 4500.  When I run a printing test, it prints out fine so it does not appear to be an ink problem or connection issue.  But when I try to print out a document from my computer, the paper feeds through but does not print.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Perplexed99,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.  I gather that when sending a print job to your Officejet 4500 printer that the printer only prints blank pages.
I’ve included the Troubleshooting Print Quality document.  I know you said the test page seemed to print fine but please follow the steps in this document.  If that doesn’t assist you, please also Try the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows.  You can find the download for the Print And Scan Doctor at hp.com/go/tools.
