Officejet 6500 Alignment failure

All of the instructions have been following to clear the alignment failure message. A new printhead and new cartridges have been installed. Both cartridges and printhead have been aligned. The blue ink does not print although the ink level is high and it is a new cartridge. Reset instructions have been followed. I have searched for an HP authorized service shop but none are available for this printer.

If cyan is not printing the alignment will fail.  The document here may help resolve cyan not printing on your Officejet 6500.  Be sure to check the vents are not clogged as shown in solution two.  If the above does not resolve the issue the post here may help.

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @gmalone
I read about the "Alignment Failed" issue you're having with your Officejet 6500 after cleaning the printhead. My best suggestion to you, would be to try all of the steps in the guide below to hopefully get the alignment to pass successfully.

  • Alignment failure - HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus all-in-one printer. The printheads failed and I bought authentic HP printheads (two), installed them and I still get the alignment failure error. The print quality is excellent on all quality and alignment reports that I have printed. What is the problem and what is the solution?

Hi craigranderson, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are experiencing an alignment failure.  I would like to try and help.
I would suggest performing a power reset. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would also recommend following the steps in this document on an 'Alignment failed' Error Message Displays on the All-in-One.

I was only able to print one page and then both my printer and my computer would display an error message about the printer's inability to print.  Since then I've been able to resolve my specific problem.
    I
    1. uninstalled HP from my computer (checked to ensure that my printer was no longer visible in my printers and the HP Utility software was nowhere to be found),
    2. grabbed the software/driver update from Aug, 2010,
    3. installed the Aug, 2010 update, and my problems seem to have been fixed.

  • Officejet 6500 ink system failure - hp printers used to be good, but are trash now

I'm so frustrated. I have an Officejet 6500 that gave me an Ink System Failure warning. I read that it probably was a low cartridge and so I replaced the low one - according to the level indicator, it still had ink - and it started working again. Then I got the error again. According to the HP print manager software, all cartridges had ink, but now the magenta looked low, so I replaced it. (As a side note, this printer EATS the expensive high capacity cartridges. I thought it was a good value to buy the higher capacity cartridge, but if I get a dozen pages out of them I'm lucky.)
So now I have tried cleaning the printhead using the manager software, which doesn't work because the printer is still in Ink system failure mode. So I took out all the cartridges, cleaned the printhead - it was inky - cleaned the contacts, reset using the turn on, unplug power cord from printer, from wall, wait 15 seconds, plug in to wall, plug in to printer. Still have the error. Did it all again. Still have the error.
I'm so irritated. I spent good money on this printer, and the expensive HP ink, because I'd had good luck in the past with HP printers. But this one h as eaten up  hours and hours of my time and cost me hundreds of dollars in ink alone and STILL  WON'T PRINT. Is there some other secret reset method that isn't documented? Some other test I can do? According to the troubleshooting guide, I"m now supposed to replace the printhead, and then if that doesn't work send the printer for servicing. Hello? You told me to replace the ink cartridge, so I wasted expensive ink doing that. Now I'm supposed to replace another part, without any real idea whether it will fix the problem or not? There's no diagnostics on this printer that can figure out exactly what part of the ink system has failed?
If anyone has any ideas how to get this piece of junk to print I'd really appreciate it. I'd love to be able to keep this printer working for a little while longer because I'm trying to get a business off the ground and just don't have lots of unused money sitting around to throw at solutions that "might" fix my problem. I've become so disullusioned with HP. They used to make great products, but now unfortunately the products and the support seem to have gone down the tubes together. I will NEVER buy another HP printer even if they fix the quality issues.

Try cleaning the print head with rubbing alcohol wipe, then replace your print head. Keep pushing the Ok.
Go to this link and HP shows you how.

    Hi @CJCJC,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you are getting the alignment failure error with your HP Officejet 6310. I am happy to help you with this issue!
I would suggest a hard reset, by going to this post, How to perform a Hard Reset, by @Rich1. It is important that the printer's power cable is plugged directly into the wall outlet, not a surge protector. Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
Also, I would recommend making sure none of your ink cartridges are low or empty, and that they are Genuine HP ink cartridges.

I was able to run the "clean printhead" function under tools (3 times) and this worked. I also ran the secondary cleaning that was a follow up option (after the first cleaning) on the printer.  Black ink is now functioning.  Here are the steps...
    Solution four: Clean the printhead
NOTE:This process uses ink to try to unclog and clean the nozzles in the printhead. This process might take a few minutes and uses one or more sheets of paper.
Load letter, A4, or legal size, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
    Press the Setup button ( ) .
Press the Down Arrow button ( ) to highlight Tools , and then press OK .
Press the Down Arrow button ( ) to highlight Clean Printhead , and then press OK . The product cleans the printhead.
When the cleaning process completes, press any button on the control panel to return to theTools menu.
Try to align the product again.

  • Printhead Alignment Failure on Officejet Pro 8500A Premium

While printing a series of pages using two-sided printing, the print quality got worse and worse.  I cleaned the printheads to the third level, but no improvement in quality.  After trying to align the printheads, I received the message "alignment failure".  I have re-set the printer by unplugging, but that does not help.  Any suggestions?

    Hi @privat_
I'd like to help you be able to print again. I understand your colored cartridges are working, but the black ink is not.  Please begin with the steps in the following document; Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Officejet 6500 All-in-On...
If you complete all of the steps in the document above and the issue continues, my own personal recommendation, not one of HPs, is to use the solution offered in the following video.  I only suggest doing this if he printer and printhead are out of warranty.  Hot Water Printhead Flush - HP Ink Series Printers with removable Printhead.
I have recommended this solution to others and have seen success, but I can not guarantee this will resolve the issue, it is an end of the line kind of effort. I hope it helps.

Maybe they can offer you a discount on a newer model, or discuss the option of replacing the printhead!  If after all of our efforts the issue remains, I suggest calling HP. If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.

I replaced my color cartridges and my magenta will not print. Originally only the black would print then after the following steps the bluee and yellow cartridges began working. Previous steps I have tried; Clean cartridges step one the blocks on the bottom of page not solid they were streaky. Clean cartridges step two nice print quality solid blocks at the bottom only blue and yellow no magenta. Followed your steps listed above cleaned print head. Aligned cartridges then printed quality page then print quality diagnostic. I am unable to get the magenta cartridge to print. I am replying to you, to share the troubleshooting guide I would suggest for the magenta not printing from your Officejet 6500 Wireless. The steps may look familiar to you as you have tried quite a bit of troubleshooting already however, browse over the steps and try anything you haven't yet tried.

If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue and the magenta still will not print, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you, such as a replacement or trade in, as the printhead(s) may be at fault.

I am experiencing the same problem. I too, have tried installing a new black ink catridge, taking out the printer head and cleaning it by hand, cleaning the printer head using the HP software, doing a partial reset, doing a hard reset and nothing. Black does not print out at all, whether it's an alignment page, quality report or something from my own files (Word, Excel, PDF, etc). The black does not appear at all. Can someone PLEASE help solve this problem?

  • Hp officejet 6500 all in one won't print in black

I cleaned the printhead to eliminate clogs which had worked in past.  Did not work this time.
Purchased and installed a new printhead and ran a report which showed the black ink working.
Ink levels in all cartridges, however, were low.  Purchased new 920 XL cartridges and installed.  Ran an alignment and said it failed.
Ran the cleaning of the printheads and then ran a report and still no black ink.
Ran status and quality reports and now the black will NOT print (when it was printing the day before with the new printhead).
HELP!  Why will the black suddenly not print.  The printhead is new and the hp ink catridges are all new.

    Hi, Jamison ~
I had tried many of the things you noted (from the link) and at one point got an acceptable quality report (that included black) after replacing the printhead so it was particularly frustrating to then go back to no black after loading ink cartridges.  I had done the partial reset too (as I had seen that recommendation on a forum) waiting hours for it to sort itself out wasn't acceptable when I needed to print something.
I have to admit that I finally threw in the towel and just got another printer.  I need to be able to have something reliable and tire of always sorting through how to unclog; clean; reset; order parts; get new cartridges; run through mutiple cleaning printhead cycles.  The lack of black print just seems to happen too often.
Thank you, though!  I truly appreciate you taking the time to write a thorough response for me.

I see you are experiencing print issues.  I would like to try and help.
It appears you have covered much of the troubleshooting already.
I would recommend removing the ink cartridges, and performing a power reset. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.

  • Print quality of an officejet 6500 wireless all-in-one E709n

I purchased this printer as part of an Apple promotion with a MacBookPro.  The color is extremely poor.  Was told by an HP tech. that they were host cartridges only to be used for setting up the printer.    Anyone else experience this?  Also, when I print out an email, the top part of the message is cut off.  How do I fix that?  Apple won't exchange for another as I already recycled the box.  Do I just have a bum printer?  It does respond to print commands and I have it hooked to a desktop iMac via USB and to my laptop via wireless.  That works...unfortunately, the quality is horrible.

I think our HP tech support agent gave you incorrect advice.  Out of the box, the color quality should be spot on.
When you say the color is extremely poor, do you see this with photo printing or general purpose color documents?
Also, have you tried performing a print head cleaning and an alignment?  The alignment should have been done automatically when you first setup the printer but it doesn't hurt to do it again.
Finally, give HP tech support a call again and politely press your case.  Don't let them tell you it's a host supply issue since the 6500 doesn't use this type of starter ink.  If you are unhappy with the printer's print quality, insist on a replacement.
    BTW -- I have a prototype Officejet 6500 and I think it's a good office printer.

  • Officejet 6500 won't print black

    Hi,
I have an Officejet 6500 AIO that will print any color besides black. We've already replaced the black toner cartridge, ran an alignment (which failed), and did 1st and 2nd level printhead cleaning, all with no improvement. I've been looking online and HP doesn't even sell replacement printheads anymore for this model, and the ones I could find from other vendors cost half the price of a new printer.
Anything else I can try before calling it quits and replacing the whole unit?
