Officejet 6500 Colors behaving strangely

I have a brand new OfficeJet 6500 E710n that I use on two Macs running 10.6.
I've had no end of problems with this printer and Fax and I honestly feel like returning it to Costco!!!!  I only bought it a week ago and already the ink is running low, I've had to clean the printheads a dozen times, and I can't get it to connect to a fax machine!!  As for printing, jeez, it's crazy.
Here's the current and most pressing issue: I made a potty chart for my son and the colors are all messed up.  I found some threads that discuss that the black prints with other colors and I wonder if that's possibly my problem.  Comparing the two documents, you can see that at times the colors print normally (text) but other times the blue and green print black (graphics) but not ALL of the colors.  Some of the blue is the way it should be, so it's not cut and dry.  I can't see a spot in my computer where I can adjust the graphics.
It's been no end of problems since purchase: when I installed the printer for the first time it didn't work with the cd that came in the box so I had to go online and download the new HP Utility software (and I'm not even running the latest version of Mac OSX!!!!) and now it connects and I can print (to a point) and scan. Thanks in advance for any help.
I'm attaching the two files, one that is what the computer should print and the other a scanned copy of what results.  I've compressed the files into JPEG, but normally it is a PDF.

Hello @Sibbe!
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I can see that you have replaced the printhead but are not getting colors on the paper when printing.  I should be able to provide some suggestions that may resolve the issue!  The first thing I recommend is to remove the printhead and manually clean the electrical contacts in the printer and on the new printhead.  Ink can mist up onto the electrical contacts and if they are not getting a solid connection it may not print correctly.
For instructions on manually cleaning the printhead click here: Manually cleaning Printhead
Please post back and let me know how it goes!

I replaced my color cartridges and my magenta will not print. Originally only the black would print then after the following steps the bluee and yellow cartridges began working. Previous steps I have tried; Clean cartridges step one the blocks on the bottom of page not solid they were streaky. Clean cartridges step two nice print quality solid blocks at the bottom only blue and yellow no magenta. Followed your steps listed above cleaned print head. Aligned cartridges then printed quality page then print quality diagnostic. I am unable to get the magenta cartridge to print. I would appreciate your your help as we have an important school project due.

Open the top and let the carriage move to the center or left, unplug the printer, remove the ink cart. and lay on side, raise the grey handle and remove the printhead, with a lint free cloth or coffee filter, genitally moisten it and wipe down the contacts on the back of the printhead, also wipe down were the printhead sits down into the printer, reinstall the printhead and ink cart., close the cover, no hold down the #3 on the front of the printer and plug the unit back in, when you get power release the #3 and see if that helps the issue.

    @rkcpalmsprings, welcome to the forums
I am replying to you, to share the troubleshooting guide I would suggest for the magenta not printing from your Officejet 6500 Wireless. The steps may look familiar to you as you have tried quite a bit of troubleshooting already however, browse over the steps and try anything you haven't yet tried.
Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Officejet 6500 All-in-On...
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue and the magenta still will not print, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you, such as a replacement or trade in, as the printhead(s) may be at fault.

  • Color management with HP officejet 6500 E709 serie

Can you pls tell me what my color management settings should be set to on mty HP officejet 6500 E 709 series? It is connected to an HP Elitebook 6930p.  All cartridges are new but none of the "red/pink" colors print.  Thank you.

I have the same problem - no idea what to do to correct.  Yesterday I replaced the magenta cartridge and within an hour it was telling me the cartridge was empty.  Turned it off and today when I turned it back on it sees the magenta cartridge as full.  Useless as it is tho, with the colors all pink.

  • Cannot turn off color management on HP Officejet 6500 E709n

The subject says it all.  I want to create an ICC profile for my HP Officejet 6500 E709n.  In order to do that I need to turn off color management, then print a test pattern.  I cannot find any documentation on the Internet that this is possible for this particular printer.  HP describes a driver that does support this feature, but does not say whether the feature is available for all HP inkjet printers, just fior Photosmart printers, etc.
I am running OS X 10.7.5 and have driver version 4.0.1 installed.  Can anybody verify that, on Lion with this version of the driver, the option to turn off color management is available for some printers (I suspect Photosmart) but not for others (e.g., Officejet)?  I have no option to install another driver, as Apple's Software Update determines the drivers required and installs them automatically.
    Thanks,
    Richard

It may be that you can't turn it off. In my quest for a color laser printer that didn't cost a small fortune, I first tried two somewhat cheaper models. In both cases, I had checked the documentation before purchasing the printers for the same reason as yourself. There were settings on both the printer and in the driver software to disable color management and any type of auto color control.
In neither case did those features actually work. After profiling, color wasn't even close to the monitor, so the printers were still doing some sort of color modification of their own despite being set to none. These were color laser printers in about the $275 range. As you get into anything cheaper (including of course the deluge of dirt cheap inkjet printers), they are essentially impossible to profile. These door stops are targeted at users who just expect the printer to kick out a page with an image on it.
For a color laser printer, I originally went with a Xerox 6280DN, which is a toner model (I was purposely avoiding the models that use solid inks). That one profiled perfectly. The 6600 is probably the closest current available model to that.
However, you're looking at inkjet printers. I know some users try to avoid Epson, but I've always had good luck with them, and the output is outstanding for the higher end models. Their cheapest professional model is the 17" 3880 at about $1200. Add $200 more for the Designer Edition, which is the same printer bundled with the EFI eXpress RIP Software.
One of the nice features of this model is it uses their newer head. We have a Stylus Pro 4900, which replaced a 4000. The difference is night and day in ink loss. The 4000 regularly churned through a good third of the ink spent on that thing just trying to keep the nozzles clear. A very large waste of expensive ink! The 4900 still does clog at times (all inkjets do), but nowhere near as often, and it clears with less waste.
As an example, the 110ml cartridges for the 4000 averaged $60 per color. We'd go through at least a couple thousand dollars of ink a year, much of it lost to keeping the thing unclogged. With the 4900, which we've had for a year and a half now, we still have two of the original 80ml starter cartridges in it. The replacements you buy for it are 200ml and should last a good two years or more. In other words, the cost of ink per year dropped by about 80%.

  • Troubles with HP OfficeJet 6500 E710n-z on Arch Linux

Recently, I have tried to use my printer after five months break. It used to run smoothly on Arch Linux with hplip. However, now, I have not managed to make it print properly with hplip again. This is my configuration, as seen from the CUPS web interface:
Driver: HP Officejet 6500 e710n-z hpijs, 3.12.11 (color, 2-sided printing)
        Connection: hp:/net/Officejet_6500_E710n-z?ip=192.168.1.4
After trying to print some test page, the jobs listing in the CUPS web interface showed me a error message "Filter failed". I deleted my .cups and .hplip directories in my home folder and reinstalled cups and hplip. The same symptoms appeared again after restarting and a fresh installation.

My Arch system is up-to-date. I heard that it might have become necessary to install the hplip-plugin somewhen in the last month for some HP printer models. If I understand the table at the bottom of http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo … 10n-z.html correctly, then the hplip-plugin is neither required nor available for my printer model. I tested also installing it from AUR, just because it was worth a try (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/hplip-plugin/), but this made matters worse, having my printer to madly produce almost-empty paper with some crap characters at each page top. As expected, the hplip-plugin was a dead-end, and I uninstalled it to continue some experimentation with printing test pages (all on the same page, mind the trees!). Resuming the printer, CUPS prints

Indeed, some errors show up. I find it strange that ghostscript is called with a parameter -sDeviceModel="HP Color LaserJet 2600n" -dDuplex=true even though I clearly have an inkjet printer and no laser printer – and also specified the correct printer model. Also later, I can see the two lines

which to the best of my knowledge indicates some internal mess. Raising the debug level in cups.conf did not tell me anything new.
Notably, using the hpcups driver at least makes the printer print pages properly, but the wonderful (mind the trees) duplex-mode seems to only be available when using hpijs when selecting the PPD file in the add printer wizard. That is why I want to stay with the driver mentioned above.
The trouble for me is that the printing pipeline is so complex and so many components are involved that I have no real good starting point to where exactly post bug reports. I would appreciate if some fellows with the same printer and the same errors could confirm my description. Or even point out how to get that organism to paint ink properly on the paper. Any ideas where to start? Or references to better resources regarding the combo of HP OfficeJet 6500 E710n-z and Arch? Is it just an regression bug and will be fixed? Is my system corrupted in some way? There is lots of open questions I don't quite feel able to answer all by myself. Any hints for troubleshooting appreciated!

After some more reading and troubleshooting, I have filed the following two bug reports at hplip:

    SCAN ISSUE SOLVED!!!!
I have an HP Photosmart 6500a Plus printer that is connected via USB to a less than 1 year old Dell XPS 8300 tower running Win 7 64bit Home Premium Edition.  The print function worked fine but scans would halt mid-way through the scan and eventually the software would indicate that it had lost connection with the scanner.
After EXTENSIVE testing, I determined that the problem was with the Dell tower and NOT THE PRINTER.  I hooked the printer up to a Dell Inspiron mni-tower running Vista and had NO PROBLEM scanning.  I hooked the printer up to a Gateway laptop running Win 7 Pro and had NO PROBLEM scanning.
On a hunch, I inserted a POWERED USB hub in between the Dell XPS 8300 tower and the HP Photosmart 6500a Plus and was rewarded with a, first time ever on the XPS 8300, complete and flawless scan.
I surmise that the HP Photosmart 6500a Plus was not getting the required voltage from the USB on the Dell XPS 8300 tower and that was causing the scan to fail.
    WOOHOO!
Been chasing this one for several months...

Seems that I have to install pyqt4-dbus, but "pacman -S pyqt4-dbus" gave an error message that no package found.
You may suggest me to run hp-setup in an text-mode by "hp-setup -i". I have gone through that without any error message. Somehow, hplip still couldn't communicate with the printer. That's why I try to set up the printer in a graphic mode.
I just don't know how to setup the GUI mode for hplip. I have spent 2 whole days. Any useful help is appreciated.

  • HP Officejet 6500 E709n printer - black ink not printing

I have an HP Officejet 6500 E709n printer and for some reason the black ink is not printing.  The color cartridges work fine.  I even changed the black cartridge, cleaned and aligned the print heads, uninstalled and reinstalled the printer, but nothing fixed the issue.  I was wondering if the color management profile has something to do with this.  Please help!
    Thanks!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I am experiencing the same problem. I too, have tried installing a new black ink catridge, taking out the printer head and cleaning it by hand, cleaning the printer head using the HP software, doing a partial reset, doing a hard reset and nothing. Black does not print out at all, whether it's an alignment page, quality report or something from my own files (Word, Excel, PDF, etc). The black does not appear at all. Can someone PLEASE help solve this problem?
    Thank you

  • Officejet 6500 printhead not printing black ink

I just purchased a new printhead and it shows I have full new black ink cartridge, but it prints all colors except black.

    Hello bstimson1.
Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand your Officejet 6500, after purchasing a brand new printhead, is still not printing in black ink.
Now, buying a brand new printhead is not a guaranteed fix, but I can certainly try and resolve this issue. When purchasing this printhead, did you receive setup ink cartridges? Additionally, where did you purchased the printhead?
Did you clean the electrical contacts inside the product, before installing this printhead? I will provide an HP document on performing this step here.
Please follow this HP document on Common Print Quality Problems, as well. If you "Clean the Printhead" three times, you could see improvement.
Please inform me your troubleshooting steps.
Looking forward to hear from you.
    Hello adeterman.
Welcome to the HP Forums as well! I understand you are not witnessing any black ink when printing a document. What type of printer do you have? Click here to find out: Model Number.
I am going to recommend following this entire HP document on Common Print Quality Problems.
If you are still receiving a defective printout, please contact HP techincal support for further assistance. Click here to find out: HP Worldwide Contact.

  • Has anyone ever encountered layer blend modes behaving strangely?

I use photoshop quite a bit for retouching and photo compositing. Tonight I encountered a strange problem. I was trying to create a vintage look on a photo and had a number of adjustment layers including a curves, levels, color fill and there were also a few texture/noise layers all set to varying opacities. Near the top of all this I had a vignette layer that was black around the edges and white in the center set to blend mode of multiply. Well, when I was clicking on and off I realize that that vignette layer was definitely lightening the center part of the overall image quite a bit (the part that is white on the vignette layer), almost like a screen. So I flipped the vignette layer through different opacity modes and saw that there was no change in its behavior, every mode was screening the white, even darker color and multiply. I thought maybe it was interacting in a weird way with one of the other layers so I turned all the others off except the back ground-- still no change. Then I dropped the layer down one at time until it was below the background. When I started to move it up again, it was behaving normally for a moment until I moved it up a couple levels in the stacking order and then it went back to the screen behavior. Anyway I shuffled it around a bit but there was no consitency to when it would display the correct opacity and when it wouldn't, so it did not seem to be an interaction with any specific layer. I don't know, but I can't really think of any case where white set to multiply should produce a lighter result even if it were interacting with another opacity. In any case it does seem to me that there is something going on with the overall computation of opacities. I tried creating a new black and white layer and it was also doing the same thing, behaving strange and not displaying the correct opacity.
I'm tired, so I'm going to bed. I'm going to shut off the computer and hope this goes away when I reboot, but if it does not, does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm not a regular visitor to this forum, but I thought I'd put it out there in case anyone else has experienced anything like this. I've only got 5 gigs of ram on this computer and I've been working away for a while... maybe photoshop just couldn't keep up(?) I'm using Photoshop CS5, RGB Adobe 1998 colorspace.  I've never had anything like this happen in the last 11 years I've been using photoshop. Hmmm.... hope I don't have to reinstall or call support or worse. fingers crossed.

Nevermind. It is still having the problem. I have to think that this file is just corrupt somehow because I just opened another file and can't seem to cause the same problem. Basically, I can fill a layer with white, put it to a blend mode of multiply or darker color and it will block out everything of the image below, ie totally opaque. The opaqueness varies depending on the if there are other layers also on blend modes, but it does not seem to correspond to normal blend mode interaction. If I put it right on top of a regular layer with an image on it, it totally blocks it out on a blend mode of multiply... weird. I am going to scrap this file and see if the problem recurs in other files. My 2006 Mac Pro is getting some years on it and has been running pretty slow. I'm not a hardware expert but I've done everything I know how to do to maintain it. Was thinking of upping the ram to see if I can hold out a bit longer before I upgrade the computer. Wouldn't surprise me if this problem is related to the computer.

  • Using HP Officejet 6110 and Officejet 6500 wireless issues

I have been using an HP Offciejet 6110 printer for a long time with an HP laptop running WINXP. I purchased a new HP laptop running WIN7.  The WIN7 laptop will print to the 6110 in color only and doesn't allow the HP Imagimg Director software to work.
I recently purchased a new HP Officejet 6500 wireless printer and set that up to run off the HP laptop with WIN7 using the full software install.  That seems to be working OK.
I then setup theold  XP laptop using only the drivers for the Officejet 6500 so I could still use the Officejet 6110 from that computer and all the scanning and other features of the HP Imageing Director software.   But it appears that the Officejet 6500 drivers have scewed up the Officejet 6110 software drivers on the XP laptop. How do I get this computer back to using the 6110 as normal (which was very useful) but be able to use the 6500 as an optional printer without all the 6500 features?

    Hi dresdenron,
Thanks for clarifying the issue again. I was a bit confused.
How is the Officejet 6500 and Officejet 6110 setup on the Windows XP? (USB, Wireless)
Both models use completely different software. So there shouldn't be any interference even if the full software had been installed for the Officejet 6500. If both printers are connected by a USB cable, then the Officejet 6500 might have taken over the port and therefore causing the scan not to work.
What happens when you try to scan? (error message)
Download and run the Print and Scan Doctor. It will diagnose the issue and might automatically resolve it. Find and fix common printer problems using HP diagnostic tools for Windows?
If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall the Officejet 6110. This way it will be recognized on the new port assigned.
    Uninstalling the Printer Software.
HP Officejet and PSC Full Feature Software and Driver.
What were the results when you ran the Print and Scan Doctor? (did it print or scan, any error messages)
The Officejet 6110 is a Windows Update for Windows 7. There is no HP Imaging Director software available to run on Windows 7. Installing the Printer Software in Windows 7 for a USB Cable Connection.
Please provide in detail the results. If I missed anything, just let me know.

  • Print quality of an officejet 6500 wireless all-in-one E709n

I purchased this printer as part of an Apple promotion with a MacBookPro.  The color is extremely poor.  Was told by an HP tech. that they were host cartridges only to be used for setting up the printer.    Anyone else experience this?  Also, when I print out an email, the top part of the message is cut off.  How do I fix that?  Apple won't exchange for another as I already recycled the box.  Do I just have a bum printer?  It does respond to print commands and I have it hooked to a desktop iMac via USB and to my laptop via wireless.  That works...unfortunately, the quality is horrible.

I think our HP tech support agent gave you incorrect advice.  Out of the box, the color quality should be spot on.
When you say the color is extremely poor, do you see this with photo printing or general purpose color documents?
Also, have you tried performing a print head cleaning and an alignment?  The alignment should have been done automatically when you first setup the printer but it doesn't hurt to do it again.
Finally, give HP tech support a call again and politely press your case.  Don't let them tell you it's a host supply issue since the 6500 doesn't use this type of starter ink.  If you are unhappy with the printer's print quality, insist on a replacement.
    BTW -- I have a prototype Officejet 6500 and I think it's a good office printer.

  • Officejet 6500 won't print black

    Hi,
I have an Officejet 6500 AIO that will print any color besides black. We've already replaced the black toner cartridge, ran an alignment (which failed), and did 1st and 2nd level printhead cleaning, all with no improvement. I've been looking online and HP doesn't even sell replacement printheads anymore for this model, and the ones I could find from other vendors cost half the price of a new printer.
Anything else I can try before calling it quits and replacing the whole unit?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • OK to print iron-on transfer sheet w/HP Photosmart Plus B210 or HP Officejet 6500 E709Printer?

I have two color printers, but want to make sure it is SAFE to print an iron-on transfer using them.  I am not sure if they are laser or inkjet printers (kind of not the tech-y type!).  I don't want to melt the paper inside the printer and break my machine.  Which machine can I print my iron-on's with:
    HP OfficeJet 6500 E709 Series
    or
    HP Photosmart Plus B210 Series

    Hi,
I have done something similar with an inkjet printer in the past (with succesful results) but as I'm not familar with the exact transfer paper you're using I can't be sure that you'll get the same results.
They are both inkjet printers and there shouldn't be an issue printing iron-on's as long as the transfer paper is a standard size and feeds through the printer.

  • Trouble Installing HP Officejet 6500 on a MacBook Running OS 10.4.11

I'm trying to help a friend install the new HP all in one Officejet 6500 she bought.
We've followed the directions in the start up guide--plugged the USB cable from the printer into the laptop, put the HP install disk in, double clicked on the install icon.
The installer gets through the first few steps--asks us to agree to the EULA, pops up a box with the printer and we select the printer to install, takes us to the easy or custom install page.
No matter whether we select easy or custom, when we click on the install button, nothing happens. No little "I'm thinking" color wheel. No install bar. Nothing.
Any help on what we need to do would be great.

Depending on the age of the printer, drivers for it could have been pre-installed
in the OS X already. For my all-in-one HP Officejet (5610xi) instead of trusting
the older drivers and included software in the box (last year) I went to HP's
support pages and found a rather large download of newer drivers. That worked.
{Though I do not recall now, if the printer had to be turned on (or off) before
installing the drivers and attached to the computer, some of these kinds of
steps are important to follow exactly as per the instructions. I have more
    than one brand of printer, so by memory alone, I will not cite an example.}
So, the drivers in the box may not be the best available; so perhaps that is a
part of the issue. Another one may be in not following their setup instructions
exactly and to the letter for Mac OS X. The Quick Setup paper in the HP packet
usually is enough for the Mac; unless they omitted that from your package.
A few weeks ago, I performed a fully new installation of everything to a zeroed
hard drive; including re-install of the large file of HP drivers I downloaded from
their support site. Rather easier to navigate than discuss, the Mac OSX ones
are not hard to find for most available and some older all-in-one units online.
You may have to find and remove just those items installed by the original
HP CD included with the Officejet 6500; or maybe not. I tried to not install
their older drivers based on the date of the files in their disk. In a few cases
using existing old drivers may be almost inescapable; but in newer OS X
versions, those old ones are problematic. Do Not get the latest Snow Leopard
drivers, they are listed and linked from Apple Support> Downloads. Instead,
go to HP Support and get the correct ones for the unit you have there, and be
sure to check that the ones you get are Not for OS X 10.6.
