Officejet j6480 connectivity issues

I've been having troubles for months, and have tried to follow advice on these forums in all that time, and I am at the end of my rope. Here we go:
Officejet j6480, toshiba laptop running windows 7 64 bit. some months ago the computer and the printer stopped communicating, and would only print if I powered both down then back up, then only for about 15 minutes.
Tried setting a static IP address, didn't seem to change anything - still had to power printer down/back up to have the computer & printer work.
Going forward, please pardon a lack of chronological narrative - I have tried so many things I've lost track of the order of events. In fact that may be all I'm asking - In What Order Am I Supposed To Be Doing All This Stuff So That It Works????
Recently tried scanning, was given the error message 'no scan options, refer to setup' (or something like that). Further research on this error message revealed an updated (as of 10/2014) driver for this printer.  Downloaded driver, and had at one point to attach computer to printer via cable.  had to go to store to get cable. setup did not complete successfully (?), but printer and computer did indeed communicate and I managed to print, if only for a day.
Today tried again to print without success.  I have (in multiple attempts and multiple combinations) restored printer network defaults, powered down router, powered down modem, reconnected printer to router, uninstalled and re-installed the updated driver, used the cable in the driver installation process and found the printer to be successfully installed (! successful except that I can't print), tried to change to a static IP address and had the printer disappear again, tried to change the port IP address in the printer properties to coincide with the static IP address...and I can't think of what else I've done but I'm at a loss what to do next.
Please, please, can someone help me?

THANK YOU for your detailed reply. I didn't put it to the test, however, because I went ahead and bought a new router, and so far (2 days in) it seems to be doing the trick - I can print wirelessly, other computers in the house can see the printer and use it, and the communication issues of before seem to have been solved.  I'll keep tabs on this, though, and if the printer/router lose their way, I'll review your reply and let you know if it helps.  Thanks again for getting back to me!

  • IE 8 and compatibility with Officejet J6480 All-in-one

I have the above Officejet J6480, connected via USB, XP operating system and earlier this year after installing IE 8 I found that the printer was not compatible.  Therefore I went back to IE 7, and have been awaiting news from HP that the compatibility issue has been resolved, but I haven't heard anything.   It would seem that installing IE 8 would be a good move if it is compatible with the printer.
    Questions:
Is the Officejet J6480 now compatible with IE 8 assuming I have updated my printer software from the HP site?
If not, what do I need to do in order to use IE 8?
Is there any reason not to go to IE 8?
    Thanks for your help....

What version of OS X?  What router?

  • HP OfficeJet j6480, Duplex (Two-sided) printing, adobe, and "default"

I've been through many of the duplex printing posts, and can't find an answer that works.
    The system:
A MacBook Pro running 10.5.6 with the latest HP printer drivers (1.1.1 as per
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/HPPrinter_Driver_1_11 )
A HP OfficeJet j6480 connected over the wireless network (or via USB, it doesn't
    seem to matter).
    The problem:
    1. Duplex printing from MS Word only works if I click the "Two-Sided Printing"
option in the print dialog +every time+ I print: saving the print setup
configuration doesn't retain the two-sided setting. But at least duplex
printing works in Word -- if somewhat awkwardly.
    2. In all programs with a print dialog box, the "two-sided printing" choice
selector in the [Layout] panel is greyed out.
    3. In Acrobat Reader and in Firefox, two sided printing just doesn't work
at all. No matter what the settings.
I've tried the hpijs drivers as well -- the 3.9.2 version did no good at all.

HP support was a little less than useless -- not only did they not solve
the problem, they made me late for dinner. sigh.

  • Connecting officejet j6480 to new wireless router

We have an officejet j6480 all in one and we recently changed wireless routers and now the computers cant find the wireless printer. How do we get the computers to recognize the printer or visa versa. Thank you

The printer can be associated with the new router by using the wireless setup wizard.  Press the setup button and navigate to network and then the wireless setup wizard.  You have to know the SSID of the new router and also any security settings.
Another method is to use the software CD on the computer:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01311135&tmp_task=setupCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...
Have you setup or changed the default SSID and security settings on the new router?

  • Officejet J6480: Drivers Installed, Printer Offline

I have been having this problem for ages with my OfficeJet J6480 since the newest update of Solution Center 13.0, which has since caused a lot of grief for both network printing and Scan To issues on my mothers Aspire 6530 which has Vista 32 Bit on it. My machine which is a custom built Asus P5N-D with Windows XP 32 Bit on it works flawlessly with the printer wirelessly and has no problems with Scan To features.
I have reinstalled and scrubbed the drivers so many times, plus a reformat. When the installation occurs the printer works perfectly, then later the printer cannot come online wirelessly with my mom's Vista machine.
The only issue I can find is that in the Vista Control Panel under Printers is that the J6480 is seen as Offline, and to get the printer Online, I would have to right click on the printer and select "Use Printer Online." This fixes the issue until the computer gets shutdown. I don't know what to do and it is really bothering my mom.
Here are the Network Diagnostics for both computers:

I have a couple of general recommendations:
    1) From the D-Link DIR-655 WIRELESS SETTINGS -> Manual Wireless Network Setup:
    (a) set the 802.11 Mode to Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b for best compatibility.  If you are positive that there are no 802.11b devices in the area, you can use Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g.
    (b) Disable Auto Channel Scan and select channel 1, 6 or 11.  To find the best channel, download our Network Diagnostic Utility (located here) onto a laptop wirelessly connected to your DIR-655,  run it and select Show Advanced Tools and then select Display Detected Wireless Networks.  Try to pick a channel that is at least 5 channels away from your strongest neighbor.
    (c) Set the Channel Width to 20 MHz and Visibility Status to Visible.  This gives you best compatibility.  While the 20 MHz setting does slow down your network somewhat, unless you don't have neighboring wireless networks, interference from those networks effectively prevents the use of two bonded channels (to get 40 MHz) in the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band.
    2) From the PC, uninstall the HP Customer Participation Program (if it was installed).

    Have two computers:
HP HP 8000 Elite SFF computer Core 2 Quad 2.83GHz, 8GB Ram, 750GB HDD, DVDRW, Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)-  hard wired to computer/ HP AIP
HP ENVY Laptop i5 WIN8.1 64 bit networked to HP AIO.
When I purchased the ENVY I installed HP Solution Center AIO software and have v140.0.18.23 installed.
When attemption to access the J6480 from the ENVY, I get a message that indicates I need to reinstall the AIO software to make it compatible with WIN8.1 64 bit.
I can choose however "run" anyway and risk compatibility issues.  If I run anyway,  HP AIO seems to work fine.
I did try to download the apparently correct software from the following site, to eliminate the message:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3635378
But nothing downloads from that site, and I am unwilling to uninstall the existing J6480 software from my ENVY until I have a new driver on my laptop to install.
    Must I risk uninstalling?
J6480 works fine from my hard wired HP ELITE desktop.

    Hello rjl24,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are getting software errors when trying to open the software on your ENVY computer for the Officejet J6480.
You could try using the Printer Install Wizard on the ENVY computer, this will link up with the printer via the network connection and attempt to download and install the software.
This is the download link for the J6480: HP Officejet Full Feature Software and Driver, if you wanted to try downloading with going to the website.

  • OfficeJet J6480 Duplex Printing not working

Duplexer is installed correctly with my OfficeJet J6480.  When I try to print a two sided page using AUTOMATIC setting, it prints a page and pushces out the page without rolling it back to print on the other side.  Any input on correcting this issue?
I have the latest drivers installed.

Hi, I had the same problem. There is a setting on the porperties page for your printer. Right click on your printer and select printer properties. When you get the properties page, select the Device Settings tab. Make sure the Duplex Unit  (2 sided printing) is set to Installed.

  • How do you change the wireless setting on an Officejet J6480 from offline to online?

I am using an airport express router with Mac OS Snow Leopard, and I cannot seem to get the wireless function to work with my officejet J6480.  I installed it, setup the IP for the printer, added it to my printers list and printed one document.  Then, I tried an hour later, and it said it was offline.  I connected to the IP and verified everything, and yet it will not print. Can anyone help?

Is the HP software marked as being compatible with Snow Leopard?  If not we will need to remove it in a special way.  Please advise.
In the mean time, let's reserve an IP address for your printer in the Airport:
    1. Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer
    2. Open Airport Utility (Applications > Utilities)
    3. Choose your Airport, then choose Manual Setup.
    4. Choose Internet along the the top, then DHCP the tab.
    5. In the bottom box (DHCP Reservations) choose the plus sign to reserve an IP address.
    6. Type in a Description, like "OfficeJet 6500", then choose MAC Address, then Continue.
    7. Type in your printer's MAC address, the IP you want to give it (current one is fine), then Done.

  • Officejet J6480 and HP Scan problem after upgrade to OSX 10.9

    Hi everyone,

Problem: HP Scan won't open after updating to Mac OSX 10.9 Mavericks
    Error Message:
HP Scan cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure HP Scan works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.

  • Officejet J6480 - Always prints unwanted copies, Windows 7

Concerning the HP Officejet J6480 All-in-One:
Everytime I print a document, it always prints 4 copies even when I specify only 1 copy. Amidst the printing, I always have to manually cancel the print after the first copy is finished. It's also strange because, suppose that I'm printing a 1 page document, in the printer status window, the number of pages reads "4/1".
So, I recently switched my desktop and laptops computers to Windows 7 from Vista. Both machines now have this issue. One machine has Windows 7 64-bit and the other 32-bit. I've ensured both machines have the correct driver installed.
    Any solutions?

For the quick solution(it sounds like you may be in a hurry)...
Use the "Windows Fax and Scan" Program.  This will find the scanner, and you can run the Scan job and save it to My Documents->Scanned Documents...
Here is a reference on the Windows Scan: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Scan-a-document-or-photo-with-Windows-Fax-and-Scan
For the long term solution:  I would really try getting it working with the HP recommended software found at: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductList.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodTypeId...
Uninstall the old software, uninstall the printer.
Then first start by installing the software and do what the software tells you to do.  I have found these OfficeJet devices to be picky on the order things are done.
    Hope it helps.

  • Communication Failure With HP Officejet J6480 All-In-One

I bought a new printer, an HP Officejet J6480 All-In-One, and set it up with my PC.
Then, I set it up with my mac. I get this error: "Communication Failure: The computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer. Turn the printer off, check your printer connections and check for printer errors, and turn the printer back on."
I recently bought an Epson printer but returned it cause it was too slow. That printer gave me a similar (maybe the same, I don't remember) error. I can scan and check ink levels but I can't print. I'm connected by USB by the way.
What's wrong? I downloaded the latest drivers and software yesterday. Why can't I print?

And on HP Photosmart C7280 All-In-One.
I've got mine connected to the network on Ethernet - figured that would be less problematic than wifi - and my MacPro can see everything about the printer, just not print to it. This includes the C7280's built-in webserver which - like alot of SOHO routers - gives you a web-based interface to the printer's configuration and status. Everything on that page looks right-on, but no printing.
The printer's copy and fax functions work, and I can even scan images and save them across the network onto my machine, so the printer is already interoperating with the network to a high degree, just not printing.
Like alot of people, I bypassed the HP driver CD and downloaded a fresh software package yesterday from HP's site (200MB+, ***?), which is what I used to configure my system. As far as I could tell, there appear to be no firmware updates available for this printer. MacOS "Software Update" doesn't offer any printer driver updates - I'll try the posted link to Apple's site next.

  • Officejet J6480 prints but can't find scan device on mixed wireless network

My Officejet J6480 all-in-one used to work on my network connected to my 32 bit Vista HP laptop along with my 64 bit Win 7 HP laptop.  It degraded last fall.  It still prints from both laptops and scans from the Vista laptop.  When I restart the Win 7, I get an error message "scanning device was not found..." The detailed error information = [(1,0,-2147221496)].
I downloaded the latest full install for the Win 7 version and uninstalled then installed the J6480... still got the error after restart.  I downloaded the Print/Scan Doctor but it gave a driver error: "This tool was unable to resolve the problem, even after a restart.  Go to HP Customer Care for help resolving this problem.  I found a driver to download to patch when upgrading a previoius install from Vista to Win 7 or Win 8.  I ran it and restarted.. still have the same problem recognizing the scanner.
The scanner & print still works on the Vista laptop.  HELP!

    Hello DrSweet,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand when you scan a document, you're receiving a message "Scanning device was not found". I will do my best to assist you. Please follow this HP document on 'The Scanning Device Could Not Be Found' Displays When Scanning with a USB-Connected All-in-One.
Even though this document is indicating a different operating system, the steps will be the same. Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
    Have a great night!
I worked on behalf of HP.
