Officejet Pro 8000 says ink is empty even with a new cartridge

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8000 printer in my office at work, and yesterday it said my magenta ink was empty, so we ordered a new ink cartridge. Upon replacing the ink cartridge with a brand NEW one, it still says it is empty and the light is still flashing. Of course, this printer doesn't print at all, even in black ink only, without all cartridges working. I am so frustrated.

I have the same problem, does anyone have a solution?  The Magenta light is always flashing.  I've tried cleaning the tip with nail polish remover, inserted the cartridge in and out about 100 times and the light is still flashing and says the cartridge is empty and replace with new HP cartridge.  The cartridges have always been HP, $170.00 for 4 of them.

I had to replace both printheads about $85 a piece.  It may be more cost effective to buy a new printer.  Once I replaced the one printhead, the other one went out.  It is common and it did solve the issue.  I really like my printer and if it gets me another year or so, I think it was worth it.

  • OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus - N911g - refuses to print with an exhausted cartridge (yellow)

    Hi,
I owned this printer some months ago, and I have already substituted the black cartridge some times ago.
In fact, I usually use the b&w option to print my documents, and I use very little to no colors, instead.
Before deciding to buy this printer I had read the printer guide, which reports (translated from Italian):
[Printing with one or more cartridges exhausted]
The printer can work with one or more cartridges exhausted. However, printing with exhausted cartridges slows the printing process down and lowers the quality of the documents printed. If the black cartridge is exhausted, blacks are not going to be really dark. If a color cartridge is exhausted, the result is in the grey scale. As soon as possible, replace the exhausted cartridge. Don't remove the exhausted cartridge before you can replace it with a new one. [...]
    (screenshot attached)
The downloadable user-guide reports (no translation):
[Color cartridge very low on ink]
To temporarily print using black ink only, click Cancel Print and then re-send the print job. The
Use black ink only? message appears before the job prints. The empty cartridges will need to be
    replaced soon.
    (screenshot attached)
So, when I decided to go for this printer, knowing I substantially use black only for my studies and my work, I did take care of reading the entire printer guide and look for these specific official declarations by HP on the printer functionalities.
Additionally, I took care of disabling any HP protection and pages control on the cartridges before installing them, using the printer menu.
Today, instead, I've found out the printer won't print with an exhausted yellow cartridge. This is what the message window says (translated freely, again, from Italian):
    [Exhausted cartridge]
    HP 951 SETUP Yellow
Replace the cartridges in the list to be able to print.
HP advises not to remove the cartridge until you have a replacement one ready for installation.
Buttons are: [Buy online...] [Cancel printing] [?]
    (screenshot attached)
[?] leds to the words I've reported earlier.
I still have the "print just with the black cartridge" option enabled.
I tried cancelling the print and sending the print job again multiple times, as it is described in the guide, but no "Use black ink only?" message appears.
Before invoking and thinking to the "fraud", I ask, how am I going to be able to print, then?

The manual indicates the printer can temporarily use black only once a color cartridge is low.  Once the cartridge is depleted it will need to be replaced, otherwise damage to the printed may occur.
HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.
Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example.
Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 8600. The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printheadvor burned out printhead firing resistors. The Photosmart 3310 series is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.
The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.

    Hi hankbuck,
Thank you for clarifying, I appreciate it. I'm also sorry for misunderstanding what you had said.
You shouldn't have to change any settings on your iPhone for the HP ePrint app to accept your hotmail account. Let's try adding your Hotmail account using the 'Other' option and enter the IMAP settings for Hotmail. I've included screen shots for where to add the Hotmail account.

  • OfficeJet Pro 8000 no borderless printing on card stock via Windows driver

I just setup the OfficeJet Pro 8000 wireless printer the other day with the intent to print borderless cards on card stock.  I can print anything to it without issue however if I attempt to use borderless mode the Windows driver does NOT allow any paper type other than photo or glossy borchure types.
If I print anyway on card stock it looks ink soaked and muddy.  If I print on their recommeded types it looks fine but a card needs heavy card stock, not med or light paper weights.
If I do not select borderless, the print (on card stock) has a dredded border but the print quality is fine.
The driver will not allow even a "normal" or "draft" borderless on standard paper types.  Is there a hack or modification to allow me to print borderless on any paper?

  • Network: limit printing access ( hp officejet pro 8000 )

    Hello!
I have a HP Officejet Pro 8000 A809 connected to a LAN with approx. 100 PC's. It's not possible to attach it to my PC, because I want to share it and my PC is not running all the time.
Is there a possibility to restrict the access to the printer (MAC-filter, password) so that not everyone may print on my device? I have no access to the DHCP-Server or any other LAN facilities.
I already disabled WS Discover and WSD Print in the networking settings, but i would like to get some more security...
    Any suggestions would be appreciated
Edit: Some additional information about the current situation
    - Printer is accessed from 2 Win7-Notebooks and my Ubuntu 11.10 desktop
    - Printer is plugged to the LAN, has a fixed IP adress and is working correctly

about 6 monhs ago the printer stopped printing stating it was a out of ink (black) after i replaced the cartridge it stopped again after about 10 days. i contacted HP and they basically told me to get a new printer. i decided to try a new cartridge again and reboot etc, etc. it still would work i use my other HP printer before looking to buy another. i read on the internet that this was a frequent problem with the HP Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless Printer - A809n. and it might be an printhead problem. i replaced the printhead and any low  or outdated ink cartridge. the printer worked perfectly for 4 weeks. now i am having the same problem. this sticks. it is leaving a bad taste . i have been a loyal HP user  i feel HP has made a questionable product and is not standing behind it.

  • HP officejet Pro 8000 Can't print when color cart is empty enven when printing in grey scale

I do not use color in my printing.  Nonetheless when the printer says my color cartdridge is empty I can not print.  I spent a $100 on color cartdridge and never used them.  They now show empy and I can't print.  Is there a work around or should I just junk this printer.  Thanks for your help.
    Bob

    Hello Bobmcclammy,
I can understand the frustration when the printer, in your case the Officejet Pro 8000, stops and tells you to change inks you are not even using. I too have fought with this in the past. Unfortunately, there is no "work around" for such an issue, at least that I have been able to find.
Even when printing black text only, for example, a resume, the printer will be using a subtle amount of color as a base. Printhead maintenance also will chip away at the ink, this is to ensure the ink is not drying up within the print system. This information will explain more: Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers.
What I have done in order to get the most out of the printer ink is, set the printer in a black only grey scale mode. This needs to be set in the printing preferences in the print driver installed on the computer.
The inks will still need to be replaced, but it should help for the future.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless - Override depleted ink reporting

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless which uses the HP 940 ink cartridges.
I've replaced my black ink once and the yellow once.  The cyan and magenta have reported low for a week or so.
I changed the printing setup to only print in black and white and grayscale to conserve color ink as I primarilly only print black and white.
Today, while I'm trying to get some important documents finished, I went to print and it says my cyan is now depleted and I cannot print.
I'm looking for a solution to override this condition and still print only in black and white as I have it setup to do anyway.
Your comments and suggestions are appreciated.

It would appear this issue is more complex than I thought when I wrote my original reply. It would appear that, in addition to the estimated ink levels that the cartridge tracks through the little chip on it, the printer also has sensors that detect whether ink is present at the cartridge as well as the print head. If you are using a refilled cartridge, you can simply hit resume as I stated before. THe chip will register that the cartridge is empty, but ink will be detected by the sensors and you can still print. However, if your cartridge really is empty, it will refuse to let you print. The web client will give the error "The Device Needs attention". There does not seem to be any way around this without replacing (or refilling) the problem cartridge. I believe that there is a reason for this. The hoses from the cartridge to the printheads need to always be primed or ink could dry in the hoses and possibly ruin the printer. If the printer ever allowed the ink to be fully depleted for a given color, ink residue could dry in the hoses. It would be better just to block a single color from printing rather than blocking printing altogether (both for us and for HP), but I guess they didn't go to the extra trouble in development. This could probably be done with a firmware update, but this is an aging printer.

  • Officejet pro 8000 not recognizing brand new HP black ink cartridge

Hi. My officejet pro 8000 is not recognizing a brand new HP brand black ink cartridge. The black ink indicator remains lit and it will not print. I have unplugged the printer, but this did nothing. It is wierd, when I open the door where the cartridges are, the light goes out, it only goes on again when I close that door. The printer was working perfectly until this . Any helpful hints? Thanks so much.

    Hello chx2,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Officejet 8600 is not recognizing your brand new black ink cartridge. I will do my best to assist you! Please make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall. I just want to see if this makes a difference.
Next, please follow these steps in order:
    1) Remove all ink cartridges from the printer, then close the door
    2) Remove the power cord from the printer (Do not press the power button)
    3) Please clean the ink cartridges by following this HP document here. (Also, make sure you have completed all the steps from this document)
    4) Wait 60 seconds or more, then plug the power cord back in
    5) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges
    6) Try to print a document
Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Officejet Pro 8000 = Expensive mistake

I'm not talking about the initial cost, but the running cost.
The supplied introductory cartridges ran out of ink in about six weeks after printing not many pages of mainly full colour documents. I replaced all four cartridges with new 940XLs at the beginning of January and since then have printed only mono documents, these mainly of text in draft mode. Since buying the printer (brand new, the wireless version), I have printed 278 b&w pages, 229 colour pages and 109 duplex - about 600 pages in total.
Now, one month after replacing the cartridges, I see that the ink supply levels are reading approx: Black 65%, Yellow 34%, Magenta 56%, Cyan 56%.
I bought the replacement cartridges from Amazon for £54 (HP price would have been £81).
As the Officejet Pro 8000 publicity shouts about "Professional colour for up to 50% less cost per page and energy use than Laser printers", I have several times contacted HP Customer Support about this and have been fobbed off with:
"I realize the importance of the issue and will make sure that I give you appropriate information. However, while printing all the ink cartridges are been used by the printer, even while printing in gray scale also. So if you want your printer to use only black ink cartridge, you can change thesettings to print in black only, but some amount of color ink would also be used.
Please find the below steps in the link below to changethe color settings for the printer.
     http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01368574&cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3737195"
    And then:
" I understand your concern and I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you regarding this issue and appreciate your patience. But however, as the ink cartridges contains very minimum amount of ink in them, as they are only for the intialisation of the printer. And about the consumption of the color ink cartridges is because the printer uses all the ink cartridges when printing and as yellow is used every time when printing is done. so that is why the yellow consumption is more."
    And then:
"As informed earlier about the introductry ink cartridges which came along with the printer would have consumed lot of ink because of the print settings, So I would request you to please change the print settings according to your needs from the link given to you in the previous mail. I am sure that after changing the print settings according to the printing what you are doing will give better page yields. Thank you."
All grammatical and spelling errors are theirs.
So you can see why buying this printer was an expensive mistake. Unlike my previous printer a Deskjet 1220C, it also takes an eternity to initialise itself and clicks, whirrs and rattles like a goods train while doing so. I've still got the Deskjet but sadly HP didn't see fit to update the driver to run under Snow Leopard on the Mac.
    Disgruntled Astronomer

RE: ink cartridge runs out of ink ridiculously early.
I use a 2+ year old HP Officejet J6480.   The ink cartridge I inserted on Jan 7, 2011 (I always write the date inserted on the cartridge box) ran out totally on Jan 20. And that's after I've continued to print way after the low ink notice.
(I just signed myself on for a class action suit against HP for having the printer signal low or out of ink way before the ink is gone, so I keep printing until the ink is really gone.)
To answer some of the typical HP excuses for the early emptying of the ink cartridge:
    1.  I always use the fast draft option
    2.  I never use the "print in grayscale" option because I want to preserve the black ink for as long as possible.  In this way, color parts of the page won't use up the black ink, which I need more often than the color.
    3.  The volume of printing for the above 2 week time period was about the same as always.  I use it at home, am retired, and don't print a whole lot of stuff.
I've noticed other posts that complain of the same thing. HP ink cartridges are among the most expensive yet each year yield fewer and fewer pages.
I've also noticed that the moderator answers with a disclaimer about being an HP employee but his answer doesn't represent the opinion of HP.
So where do I find where the buck will stop?  I would have preferred to e-mail or call HP to ask for a coupon for at least half off a new cartridge, but the company makes that impossible without paying a fee.  I've been buying HP printers since 1995 and bought my first HP computer 2 years ago.  The computer is ok but the support stinks.  I'm tired of having "Kevin" answer with an Indian accent and then research the answer to each question from a manual instead of knowing what I'm asking and having the knowledge to answer the question.
So, how do I get in touch with HP to ask for a coupon for a new ink cartridge to replace the one that ran out of ink in 2 weeks?

  • Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless Has Both Power and Resume Buttons Blinking

Using Vista operating system with my Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless.  The Power button and the Resume button are blinking at the same time.  I went through HP's recommended fixes step by step and it still has the same problem.  I've done all the resets, etc., etc. and I searched High and Low for a paper jam which these two blinking lights apparently indicate but could not locate even a tiny little piece of paper jammed.
Any help is appreciated and by the way, this printer has not been used a ton.  Simple average use and well below the monthly use rating.
    Thanks,  Rick

I also have been having this exact same problem for over two years now but never found a solution. I  think I have only printed out about 50 pages since I purchased the printer new in 2010 and at one point it just started doing this.  I can reset the printer by unplugging it and it will work temporarily; sometimes long enough to print out 2 or 3 pages but always goes back to the same faulting state within minutes. This happen whether or not it's connected to a network, USB, or nothing at all.  I also have the newest firmware and purchasing new ink cartridges about 15 months ago never fixed it. (They are nearly empty now and I don't think I have printed more than about 15 pages!)  Does anyone from HP know why the printer keeps faulting like this? I print so seldom that it's a shame for me to have to have to buy a new printer just so that I can print out the odd few pages every few months, and this one was expensive back when I purchased it and it's practically useless when it keeps faulting like this.
