Officejet pro 8500A; loses ability to connect to the server

Hi all,
For the past month or so, my network printer has developed a glitch.  Everytime I or my family sends a document to print, we see the messaging "preparing to print" and the printer never prints!  I ran the printer trouble shooting on my Windows 7 professional and was given the message:  "The printer was unable to connect to the server.  You can connect to the printer to the internet through a proxy server, to do so, touch Enter Proxy and enter details when prompted"
Well, I've never used a proxy.  My printer was working fine till recently.
The only temporary "fix" I could come up with was to shut down the printer and power it back on.  It would go through a checking printheads or cleaning printheads, etc.  Sometimes the "eprint" button would be circled in red. If so, I hit it and asked to retry finding the server.  This usually works.  After all this, I had a small ( 1hour?) window that I could print or scan documents.  After this, the printer develops a case of amnesia and I'm back to square one.
I've downloaded the latest drivers.  Windows updates are current.
This is getting extremely  frustrating.  What the heck is going on???
Thanks

Hello @fsh42na,
Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand that you are experiencing some network issues with your Officejet Pro 8500A.
I would like to help.
The printers ability to connect to the Web Services server should have no impact on your local network printing.
It sounds to me like you have two separate issues.
Your temporary fix of turning off the printer is a step in the right direction.
When your printer powers back on, it connects with the router. This new connection is what gives you the ability to print.
Since it only lasts for an hour try the following:
Turn off your printer and other network devices.
Unplug the power cord to your router for at least a minute.
plug the power cord back into the router.
Turn on the printer and other network devices.
Test print.
If you use the Web Services (ePrint) feature on your printer, try setting a manual DNS.
Though the server connection issue will probably get resolved with the network reset, the manual DNS will not hurt anything.
The following reply by happytohelp01, has instructions for setting a manual DNS.
Efax 7510 still won't work after turning off/on ePrint several times
The post is for a Photosmart 7510, but the steps should be very similar.
If you need any further assistance, please let me know.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus "unable to connect to the server"

I have had this printer for a couple years and now it is saying it is unable to connect to the server.  The light under the wifi symbol is not lit up and nothing happens when I press that button.
I have restarted the printer, reinstalled the driver, restarted the router ... to no avail.
The router is working properly as my 2 computers are both working.

    Hi bhappie,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I gather that you are unable to connect your Officejet 8500A plus printer to your wireless network.
This printer can be connected by an ethernet cable or connected to your wireless network but cannot support both simultaneously as referenced in the document The Printer Does Not Support Ethernet (Wired) and Wireless Network Connections at the Same Time.  To setup the wireless feature you will need to unplug the ethernet cable.
Your wireless printer can be easily connected to your wireless network from the front panel of your printer.  If you are unsure how to do this the instructions can be found in your User Guide on page 219 in the section titled “To set up a wireless communication using the Wireless Setup Wizard”.
Now that the printer has a wireless connection, any computer that uses the printer, will need to have the connection method updated.  The instructions on how to do this can also be found in your User Guide on page 221 in the section titled “Change the connection method”.  There is a sub-section dedicated to Windows operating systems and one dedicated to Mac operating systems.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A unable to be listed in the available printers

My HP Officejet PRO 8500A suddenly disappeared from the list of available printers on my MacBook Pro. I went through all list of testing w/o success. The wireless test report says no wireless internet connection. There may be a MAC filter on the wireless router preventing the printer connection. How do I bypass the issue? I cannot find any IP address, when I try to add new printers, mine is not listed any longer. I have tried to re-install the printer, but no success. What else can I try?
    Thanks !

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500a drops ability to network print after a period of time

A recent development.  The printer has worked perfectly in the past.
When I first boot up the printer, it prints wirelessly.  After it is inactive and I select another print job, the computer communicates to the printer.  The printer display and the computer show that the job is printing, but nothing happens.  It eventually times out.
When I shut the printer down and re-boot, and select the print job again, it will print.  But, after sitting inactive for a while, I go through the same problem.
I've tried a usb cord and have the same issue.
So, when I need to print, I have to shut down the printer and re-boot everytime.

Sorry that you are having a problem with losing connection between the computer and printer.
You can try to the link below and set a static IP address for it.

  • HP Officejet Pro 276dw MFP - can't connect with the printer driver (but web browser works)

    Hi,
I used to own an 8500 pro which got replaced by the 276dw due to HW malfunctioning of the old model. I installed the driver (full set, win 8.1 64 bit) from the HP download area over the installed printer. I can access the printer using it's IP address. Ipad Airprint works well. The only problem is that I can't get the printer driver to connect to the printer, but the printer driver displays the printer with the correct address. Print and Scan doctor detects incomplete install and download 184MB, one bit at a time ... it will take more than an hour.
I believe - due to a message that something needs to be stopped during the install (in order to get rid of the SW for the old printer) - that this thing is stil stopped, and I need to restart that (or if it is a service I need to reset it to automatic start).
    Any idea anyone?
    Thanks and with best regards,
    Holger

update: The Print and Scan doctor did not help, but I finally added the printer using the default windows method. So I can print, but scan to PC obviously doesn't work, and neither does the Fax printer. Help still appreciated.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus Printer will connect to apps but will not connect to EPrint

OS MAC 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.  I am using a wireless connection, no USB, and everything worked fine at one time.  Recently, all remote printing, including Airprint stopped connecting.  I am unable to access anything on the HP website via the printer except for the Apps.  My network is working fine and I have done all the troubleshooting steps recommended throughout the Help system with the exception of returning the printer to factory defaults.  Unfortunately, I removed the printer from my ePrint account and have now lost access to my printer e-mail/claiming code.  Thus, I can do no troubleshooting via the HP website.   I have tried using the original code the printer came with and the e-mail I changed the printer to after installing it and neither works.  I have a bad feeling I will not be able to use the ePrint features any longer with this printer and with my warrantee expired, I will be thoroughly po'ed about this.

    Hello lynnmilicevic,
First I want to reassure you by letting you know that the web services support has no expiration.  Next I want to address the issue with ePrint.  You will not have to take the printer completely back to factory settings, but you will have to disable and re-enable the printer's web services.  You can remove the web services by going to the setup menu,  select the web services setup, select restore factory defaults ( note, this only restores web services to the factory defaults, everything else, i.e. wireless, fax, ect., will still have the settings that you have created), and select yes.  You will get a message saying that the web services have been reset.  Now go back to the setup menu, select web services, and follow the prompts to re-enable web services.  Once you have the web services enabled again, you will have to go the eprintcenter.com, log in, and add the printer to the account again.  A very unfortionate part of this is that you will not be able to get the same custom e-mail for your printer.  The original custom e-mail will be locked for about 6 months.  If this does not help, let me know and I will see what can be done.

    Hi rinnhome,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I understand that your Officejet 8600 appears to be paused when you try to print.
Please follow the steps in the Resetting the Printing System in Mac OS X document.  If your Mac Mini is running Mac OS X v10.9 (Mavericks), please follow the instructions for Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion).

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A 910

I had some serious MALWARE problems and after trying a lot of different programs decided to to a System Restore and go back a week. It went pretty well and everything basicly worked and the error messages vanished. I then discovered that my HP Officejet Pro 8500A Scanner software was missing from the desktop. I have tried to re-install the CD (from about 2 years ago) and got nowhere. I disconnected and re-connected the USB but the install program did not seem to recognise it. I tried to download from the HP website and got the message that I had a 'Windows Installer Problem". I cleaned the Regstry and still the same result. The printer is working fine but I seem to be mssing the Scanner Software. I think my solution is to simply re-install the Scanner Software, but I can't find it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.......Regards, Eliteoz (Frustrated)

Hi Brian, and thanks for the reply!
I would recommend going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Hp\HP Officejet Pro 8500a\bin
Once that is opened in your C drive, launch HPScan.exe

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus Complete Compatibility as of 4/24/11

I've just spent about 3 hours researching a new inkjet color all-in-one.  At the moment, I'm leaning towards the HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus.  So I surf the web to find out if it's compatible with Snow Leopard, if the drivers now work properly.  I read 50 or so posts (here and elsewhere) that say it is, and another 50 that say (usually angrily) that it isn't, especially with the scanning function.  Thank god for the web -- it really clarifies things.  Anyway, some posts are from 2009, some from 2010, some from this year.  Would someone who actually owns the printer and has used it please tell me if this thing will work in every respect with my Mac Pro Snow Leopard machine?  Have all the wrinkles been ironed out?  Will there be no unpleasant surprises for me when I hook it up?
    thanks,
    giraut

    Followup:
Based on pretty much nothing, I bought the HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus.  I did the regular install of software and drivers exactly as instructed in the manual.  And while I haven't had time yet to put the printer completely through its paces, I can report that it does indeed print, copy and scan from a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.7.  The wireless function also works flawlessly.  I have not had to to download any drivers or updates from HP.  Yet.
As for quality, I am actually very impressed.  I was not expecting much, having had mediocre HP all-in-ones before.  My previous printer was the much-praised Epson Artisan 810, whose paper-handling was truly awful and was just generally temperamental.  So far, the print quality, speed, and paper handling on the 8500A Plus have been excellent.  It actually appears to have been a good purchase, knock on wood.  But of course time will tell.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus and Windows 8

    Hi all ~
Can anyone tell us what this means and walk us through a fix?  (You'll know from the question what our level of expertise is....)
We've had an HP Office Pro 8500A Plus for a couple of years.  We just got HP TouchSmart with Windows 8 and while we can print from the computer just fine, we can't scan.  When loading the printer CD, we get a message that reads: "install cannot continue....The operating system of this computer is not supported....Upgrade the operating system"
We don't know how to proceed.
    Thanks

Since you are getting an error that the operating system is not supported, you may benefit from going to the HP website and downloading the installation package from there.  Here is a link directly to that site (US Version): HP Officejet 8500A Plus Full Feature Software and Drivers.
In this link, you will find all of the software downloads available for the printer.

If you are installing the printer with a USB cord, unplug the cord before proceeding.  Let me know if I can be of any more assistance.

  • Officejet Pro 8500a ADF doesn't recognize copy after scanning.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional with my Officejet Pro 8500a and after scanning documents using the ADF, the ADF won't make copies.  The ADF document states "original loaded", then I hit the copy button it says "starting copy", but doesn't start.  Any help?  So far, the only thing I can do to get the ADF to copy again is to shut the machine down and start again.

  • My iPhone and my iPad are connected by wi-fi, but I can't print on HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus. On the other hand, I can print over wi-fi from PC. What can I do?

Hallo, thank you for trying to help. Here is my problem:
In the past, the airprint was possible without problems from iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Since today it doesn't work anymore. My iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 is connected by wi-fi and I can serve in the internet. But I can't print on HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus. On the other hand, I can print over wi-fi from PC.
There are low ink-levels and therefore a message comes to indicate this by printing from PC. iPhone and iPad are accepting the print order without any messages after, but does't excecute the print.
    What can I do?

    Hey helmut,
You can also try the ePrint method listed here if you can't get AirPrint working:

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus - Wifi connection keeps being lost??

Hi - please can someone help?
HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus all-in-one printer - connected at home to laptop via cable (works fine) and PC (Windows Vista) via router and wifi.
Wifi is enabled and connected (light on printer on).  Printer is set on PC as default.  Printer has previously worked with these settings perfectly fine via the PC, but has lately developed intermittant dropping of the wifi connection.
Sometimes a PC reboot works, but this is tedious and should not be necessary - does anyone have any thoughts on why this keeps happening and some things I could try to reset - have done all what I thought were obvious steps, such as reseting the wifi network via the printer.  Everything works for a short while and then just stops.???
