Officejet Pro 8600 not able to be set as default printer

I've just installed the Officejet Pro 8600 on my wireless network.  It was added correctly using WPS andindicated no problems found on the wireless network test results that the printer did. All items were listed as 'PASS'. It is showing up in the device and printers on my Windows7  64-bit machine. When I right-click on the printer icon, it does not allow me any option to set it as my default printer and it also doesn't show up as an available printer from any application to print (like from MS Office). The device driver was auto-located by Windows, so there is also no option for me to update it. Anyone have a solution for what I need to do to get the printer available to actually print too?? Thanks.

Hi,
I had a smiliar problem for the same printer that I bought just yesterday.
Despite numerous troubleshooting tasks, I was still unable to make the printer my default one.
I tried
- switching from wireless to USB connected
- uninstalling and reinstalling
- cleaning registry entires as directed here:
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup-e-g-Windows-8/Cannot-Set-HP-Officejet-...
- running troubleshooting wizards and more...
So... after yet another re-installation, I went here:
https://h30495.www3.hp.com/help/about
and clicked on Printer Support under Additional Help (down at the bottom)
- choose North America
- choose HP Support - United States (English) --> Product Support and Troubleshooting -
- now - here - IMPORTANT - http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html :
DO NOT  Enter a product name/number
- but choose
Or automatically find your products and solutions - click on START button
you may need to ALLOW your antivirus software to scan your computer and after a minute or so you will get a response like this:
1 HP products were discovered
»HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g                 Serial Number:                                 Product #  here                                               Product Number:                                 Number here
Now got to Start - Devices and Printers and RIGHT CLICK on the HP printer device and choose Printer Properties:
The GENERIC NAME  "HP Officejet Pro 8600" needs to be replaced with FULL NAME of your printer:
HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
Click "Apply"  - click OK
Now make your printer DEFAULT
GOOD LUCK!

My printer has been connected and working in wireless mode for 2 months. now not able to connect and printer is locked and shows "IP no link".

Power off both printer band router.  Power on router wait 3 mins.  Power on printer and verify it connects to your router and you have a valid IP.  Reboot computer and now try.

    Hi,
Check first if the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet.
Check if the carriage is moving freely and there is no obstructions inside the unit.
    Clean the paper rollers once.
See if doing these helps you

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 not scanning to computer

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 is not scanning to my computer HP computer, Windows 7. This has worked fine for quite some time, not sure what happened to change it. It is a wireless connection but the printer works, and I can scan to a memory card just not to the computer. The printer software doesn't give me the option of opening the scanner. Another program said the scanner is not enabled but nobody has touched the computer! Any suggestions in language I can understand would be greatly appreciated!

Too bad nobody answered yet. It sounds like some simple troubleshooting can help narrow down the problem, but I'm no expert and all I can suggest is to try posting the question to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7?tab=Threads.

  • Can you print from the ADF with Officejet Pro 8600 (not plus) & how to print checks in correct order

Client has Officejet Pro 8600 I(not plus) They want to print payroll checks out of QuickBooks but when they put the checks in tray 1, it pulls the check that is on the top, which happens to be the last check # in the stack.  Is there a way to print where the printer pulls from the bottom of the check stack as opposed to the top. I've looked and can't seem to find the answer. QuickBooks says we should check with HP and change something in the print drivers?
So I thought it would fix it if they printed the checks from the ADF where I thought I could control if it pulls from the front or back of the stack. When we tried to print from the ADF, it pulled from Tray 1 and we weren't given the option to print from the ADF.   (only Tray 1 & 2...which they don't have the 2nd tray anyway) So does this model, not being the PLUS model, not allow you to print from the ADF. (only scan, copy and fax from the adf?)
If we can't use the ADF for check printing, then how can we get the checks to print in the correct order.  Meaning, the 1st check # to print should be on the check that is on the bottom of that check stack in Tray 1.  Otherwise they have to count out the exact number of checks & place them in the tray.  Or reverse all of them which is not an efficient either! I hope this makes sense.

    Hi @kceacct ,
I see that you would like to know how to print out the checks in order. I will do my best to help you.
The ADF can be used for copying, scanning and faxing.
From the print driver you can only select the tray that you want to print from.
Changing Print Settings in Windows 8.
You would have to load the checks in order from top to bottom in the paper tray, since the printer just pulls the paper in from the top of the stack of paper.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

  • OfficeJet pro 8600 not printing for USB attached WIn7

I have an OfficeJet Pro 8600 Attached  to Win 7 Dell with USB cable.  It scans very well but most of the time when you go to print, it thinks the USB device has timed out and it gives me garbage about where to send a fax to?
I have other computers runing XP that are Wireless devices, and they take longer but print every time something is sent to them.
This connection is 3' away and the printer default & only printer for Win 7 machine.  Under printers and devices it always  sees the printer.

Try to run the Print and scan doctor and check the results.

  • Win 8.1 and HP Officejet Pro 8600 not connecting

Priior to installing Windows 8.1, my printer worked fine.  I installed Windows 8.1 and came across the message - Printer Error - Before you can perform printer-relate tasks...  I removed and reinstalled the printer and it worked.  I printed several documents yesterday.  This morning, went to print and the same error message appeared, printing error.  I checked under devices and printers and the HP printer was grayed out.   When I clicked on the printer under device and printers, it says printer not connected.
I am using the printer on a wireless network.
    Please help in this matter.

    Hi Dennis1825,
I understand you've been having some issues with your Officejet 8600 printing since upgrading to Windows 8.1. I'm sorry to hear this has been happening but I will certainly try to help.
To get a little extra help with this issue, I'd like you to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor (running for both Fix Printing and Fix Scanning to make sure it doesn't detect any issues) and hopefully it should be able to fix this for us.
Hope this helps, have a great day!

  • HP officejet Pro 8600 Not connecting right to my new Mac Pro Air. Looses signal.

I recently bought a Mac Book Air. I have a wireless HP Officepro Jet 8600 that sometimes works for printing and a lot of times it does not get the signal. I am ready to throw my HP out the window. Had tech come in twice. Gets it and than it looses the signal. We probably do not have it connected correctly. Please help.
    Thanks
    Carlman

    Hi Carlman,
I'd like to help you obtain a more consistent  connection. I feel that disabling the IPv6 would help us accomplish this. Please use the instructions in the following post to enable only the IPv4.
Re: Office Jet Pro 8600 N911a printer
The IPv6 often times causes interference with the IPv4, thus I believe this should resolve the issue.
Please let me know if it does or does not, thanks.

    Hello,
Are you getting an error message while typing in the password? If so, what is the error message?
You could be having an issue with the wireless radio.
Can you give a little more information about the issue you're having?

  • HP officejet pro 8600 "not found" after installation on Dell laptop with Windows 7 op syst

downloaded software from internet and it shows that it's been installed on computer.  Printer is on and shows that it is connected to the network.  Networks match on computer and printer.  Printer not printing from computer but did from my phone.  "printer not found" message comes up during connection process on the instal wizard.  I am using a Linksys wireless broadband router.  I've tried all the troubleshooters and found that there was a driver error, but I don't know how to correct this.

    Hey @mech3320 ,
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to ask that question on the HP Forums today!
I understand that you are having some trouble with the driver download on your AMD chipset but not your Intel one.
I recommend that you try the web download of the drivers after you uninstall the ones that you tried form the CD.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 not working with Windows 8.1

I got a Trojan virus on my computer and had to have it wiped clean.  I've been trying to reinstall the printer, which is on a wireless network.  The computer initially identified the printer on the wireless network and I installed it.  It worked OK for a couple of days.  Today I developed a problem, that the printer would not print from various cloud-based programs that I routinely use, in one instance it deferred to the Microsoft program and worked.  Then I started to get messages that the printer would not work until One Note had been used for the first time.  (I have never used One Note)  I went through a whole trial of trying to get One Note installed, it finally said the trial period had expired and I was unable to start the program.  The Microsoft process I went through had me change my Microsoft password.  At this point the printer totally stopped working.  It is completely dead. I have plugged the computer directly into the wall outlet to no avail.  The HP information page says the printer is "offline", but when I went into control panel, discovered that the computer does not identify a printer anywhere.  It might be helpful to know that I installed Nuance PDF standard yesterday.  Any idea what's going on?

    Hello Betty7,
Please let me take a moment to say "Welcome" to the HP Forums.
I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see that you are having an issue with getting the printer reinstalled.
I suggest that we start off by running the HP Print and Scan Doctor.  If the Doctor fails, please let me know where it fails as well as any error codes it may generate.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Officejet pro 8600 not printing. lost in print que

Out of the blue printer begins loosing print jobs. Have reset printer like HP instructs, and I have turned off both iMac and printer and restarted them. There is nothing to print. The que goes empty - before and after a reset, the print job shows to be printing, but nothing happens, then the print que blanks out.
It is a bonjour or airprinter. No usb hooked up. The utilities will make it print, but nothing else from the apps will print. A newsletter deadline is staring me in the face. What a time for this to happen.
I had a problem about a month ago and installed the firmware from HP and the latest drivers from HP. All went excellent. About a week later Apple downloads and installs a new(er) driver and all worked fine for about a week and then the print que began to slow. Now it has stopped. Need some help here.

  • Can't get officeJet Pro 8600 wireless to connect

This is so frustrating. I just bought a HP Officejet Pro 8600 and am trying to set up the wireless connection to my ATT-supplied Netgear 7550 router.  I keep getting a message that "MAC address filtering is enabled on your wireless router" even though I have checked in the router setup and I am certain that it is not (it clearly says MAC is "not enabled").  I talked to the ATT tech support and they agreed--we even hard-rebooted the router and re-installed it and it seems to be working as intended.   I have unplugged and re-plugged the printer.  I have spent over 2 hours and keep getting the same message.
    Help?
Oh, I have also tried the HP Dr. software taht has been recommended to others, but it does not find my printer.

Thanks for the reply. I believe I already tried that once. I added the printer MAC address and selected "allow this address" or something like that. It did not seem to help, so I went back and disabled the MAC filtering completely. But, I can try that again. Certainly won't hurt.
