Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911 Tries to Copy from ADF if Lid Covering the Glass is Completely Open

Hi,
I just posted a reply to the following regarding an identical problem that I am having:
  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/Officejet-Pro-8600-N911n-Printer-Tries-to-C...
It occurs to me, however, that the original post I replied to is so old that it is probably better to post my problem in a new thread.
I've borrowed some of the original poster's wording since his explanation of the problem was very clear and concise...
If I have the lid that covers the glass completely open on my HP Officejet 8600 Plus (N911) printer then it usually tries to feed pages from the ADF to copy and then reports a jam since I have not put anything in the ADF. If I partly or completely shut the lidthen it copies from the glass properly. This problem arises when I want to copy pages from a thick book for which it is very incovenient (and not really possible) to hold the book firmly in position with two hands while closing the lid with a third hand.
I think the problem is that the ADF sensors that detect when the ADF is loaded with paper are normally held in the position indicating no paper by gravity. When the lid is completely open it goes past 90 degrees, so gravity causes them to be fall into a position where the sensors are tripped.
We contacted Courtney, a Case Manager on the "HP AMS TCO Escalations Team" and she insisted that the 8600 is able to copy from the glass with the lid open and that our unit must be defective. She sent a new unit, but it had the same problem since it is a design flaw, not a manufacturing defect. When we called her back she did not seem to concerned that the 8600 could not copy with the lid open and did not really want to pursue our problem any further. We asked whether we could switch to an equivalent model that can copy with the lid open, but she said that the 8600 is their top-of-the-line model and there is no equivalent model. In the end, she offered to "buy back" the printer.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any fix so that I can copy with the lid completely open? Perhaps a firmware update so the printer realizes that if the lid is open then it should ignore the ADF? I would even be OK with a menu item that lets you disable the ADF.
Does anyone from HP monitor this forum and can they test this out and report the flaw to the design team, or suggest a work-around to me?
 Thanks!

Paul,
I noticed that when the cover is completely open (90 degrees), there is a chime sound and the ADF symbol lights up in the upper right hand corner.  If I lower the lid a bit, I can press the copy button and get the copy started before the symbol lights up.  This is the same chime and symbol that lights up when pages are placed in the ADF.
I tried putting shims (small pads of post-its about 1/8" thick) under the bottom edge of the printer in the back.  That is enough to prevent the sensor from engaging the ADF with the top opened fully.  Yipee, hands free operation.  HP would probably say I voided the warranty.
Maybe the printer was tested on a table that was not level.

How do I set my HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus to print only black or grayscale?  What is the procedure?

Hi, Looks like you have to do this from the aplications. Here is the procedure from its manual, page #36: 1. Load paper in the tray. For more information, see Load media.
    2. On the File menu in your software application, click Print.
    3. Make sure the printer you want to use is selected.
    4. To change settings, click the button that opens the Properties dialog box. Depending on your software application, this button might be called Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.
    5. Change the paper orientation on the Layout tab, and paper source, media type, paper size, and quality settings on the Paper/Quality tab. To print in black and
white, click the Advanced button, and then change the Print in Grayscale option.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Click Print or OK to begin printing Regards.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus will not print but is connected and says that the print job is 100% Complete

    Hi All,
I'm printing from a MacBook Pro using OSX Lion. It says that Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is connected and that the print jop is
100% complete except that nothing comes out of the printer. I've done all of the test prints and they've printed just fine.
I tired all of the troubleshooting steps listed on the support guide and still nothing. HELP!

Not a reply but another plea for help.
There seem to be so many people with wireless problems that a) it seems silly to start a new thread and b) which one to enter my own plea.
-Printer bought about 2~3 weeks into Sept 2012
-Installed onto Macbook Pro running Lion (full updated at that time)
-Both wireless scanning from printer to computer and initiated from computer worked fine.
-Printer, with full choice of duplex, layout etc, worked fine. (Even left 5star feedback somewhere!)
-Set up eprint. That OK, too. Fine from iPad2 and SE Arc S printing photos.
-Somewhere along the line it stopped communicating with my MBP
-Out of interest, since there seemed to be no problems with an Acer laptop running Vista, I booted the MBP from an external drive on which I'd done a backup of my 10.6 system iMac (>300Km away: can't try that). Installed HP software from disc. Seemed fully functional. Odd. Very odd.
-Restarting with Lion on MBP, tried again. Looks as if it might work, but loses connectivity. Tried manual address on printer.
-Booting from 10.6 system again, reinstalled Lion on MBP (wondering if conflict between HP and Apple updates)
    -Reinstalled HP software from disc.
    Still didn't work.
-Brought Lion up to date. Downloaded most recent dmg file from HP. Looked for updates. Have applied firmware update to printer
8600 doesn't list my MBP as available computer to scan to
[But all the test pages done whilst in HP Utility, and others, get sent through]
Am getting rather fed-up with all this; never, ever before have I had so much printer problem.
There seem to be a number of Lion users out there with the same problem. So far -but very infrequently tried- other machines/systems seem OK, therefore I am coming to the conclusion that it is an Apple<> HP conflict. If not sorted soon the printer will be returned as it is not fit for purpose. I'll revert to using my seldom problematic, non duplex A3 Brother.
    Hrumph
Please help, someone! Either with a pointer to something I've not yet tried or by analysis and rapid availablity of updated software.
    Thanks,
    Mike W

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. No automatic scan menu when documents loaded into the auto feeder?

I have a new Officejet Pro 8600 Plus to replace the L7780 which brought up the scan menu when a document was loaded into the autofeeder.  How do I get the ne 8600 to do the same thing.  I find that I liked the convenience of the auto menu but it does not come up when I load document(s) to be scanned into the auto feeder.  Was this feature left off?

    Hi afredb,
I understand you have a new Officejet 8600 Plus and have some questions about the scan feature in comparison to the Officejet L7780. I will certainly do my best to answer these questions for you.
In testing on our own Officejet 8600, I have found that you would be correct, this is a feature that wasn't transferred to the upgraded machines after they stopped making the L7780. There were a few printers in between the L7780 and the 8600, and they didn't have that feature either. I believe the reasoning behind it was that many people use these printers for copying and faxing as well so having the feeder automatically assume it's going to be scanning would have created extra steps for many others. Hopefully this is only a minor inconvenience and you can still enjoy the printer
Hope this helps, have a great day!

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus only printing blank pages

Hi, My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus currently only prints blank pages.I've gone through the following troubleshooting steps-Soft reset-Hard reset-3 levels of print head cleaning-Replacing ink When I  try to realign the print head, an error pops up saying that there may be a jam, but I cannot see anything blocking it... I know the printer is out of warranty, but if there are any other troubleshooting steps, please let me know. Product Number: cm750a Kris

Hey there Kris, Welcome to the forums! I read about how your Officejet 8600 Plus is only printing out blank pages, and I'd like to help! I have a few ideas in mind that you could try and I hope they work! You mentioned that you are seeing a "jam" error, so I would like you to try out these guides:A 'Paper Jam' Error Displays on the HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer SeriesA 'Carriage Jam' Message Displays for HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer Series (N911) Please try making copies afterwards and if the copies work, try printing. Let me know the results!

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus scanner has become cloudy

I used the scanner to scan hundreds of photos and it was working perfectly throughout.
A couple weeks later I try scan some more and all of a sudden the left edge of my scan is coming out all cloudy.
    For example, see http://www.lovettsoftware.com/downloads/hp/cloudy.png
Is there a way to clean, or recalibrate or do anything to fix this or is the scanner toast ?

Thanks for the link to the user guide.  I tried all the glass cleaning ideas, but I see no improvement in scan quality.
I switched to a Canon Pixma scanner and the cloud is gone, so I'll go with that for now.
    For comparison:
The bad scan from HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus: http://www.lovettsoftware.com/downloads/hp/scan4.png
The good scan from Canon Pixma: http://www.lovettsoftware.com/downloads/hp/scan8.png
Notice the gray fuzzy tint around the top left edges is gone in the Canon scan.
Feel free to pass this along to your engineers so they can work on designing a scanner that lasts better.  I really didn't do that many scans, I did 565 scans, in fact.  I would expect the scanner to last a lot longer than that.

  • Thin horizontal black line at BOTTOM of page when scan on HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

I owned an HP Officejet Pro 8500 and scanning was perfect.  I recently purchased an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.
When I scan from the HP 8600 auto document feeder, I get a thin (several pixel wide) black line along the bottom edge of the resulting scan.  This line will sometimes be slighly crooked or only appear across half the page, in which case it tends to get thicker toward the edge of the page).  I believe this line is an artifact from scanning the very bottom edge of the oroginal document.  I think it is showing where the bottom edge of the page was when scanned.  If the document is a little skewed, then the black line at the bottom will be a little crooked, probably following the edge of the page.  This problem is consistent, and repeatable.  It happens in both "Scan To E-mail" mode and "Scan To Network Folder" mode.
When I scan from the flat bed, I get a very narrow black line along the very top edge of the resulting scan, but the bottom appears fine (although I've not tested this extensively).
These thin black lines did not occur when scanning from the HP 8500.
I am wondering if there is a setting to adjust this, or if it is a firmware difference between printers that needs debugging.
    This question was solved.

I find it interesting that the issue happens across both printers.  This is what leads me to believe this is something with the software/connection with the PC.  One thing I will note is that you mentioned above using Adobe Reader 10.1.6.  The latest version of Adobe Reader is 11.0.02.  I would advise removing your current version of Adobe Reader and install the latest version.
I am not sure if this will fix the issue as you mentioned the line comes across in jpeg and other scanning styles.  Do you possibly have another PC you could try setting up a connection with quickly and attempting a scan?  This would be another way to ensure if the issue is coming from the printer or a connection/software issue.
I would like to make sure the issue is coming from the scanners on these printers before returning the printers as I would hate for you to get another model printer and the issue remain with this printer as well.  However, I will note that the Laserjet Pro 200 is a nice series printer from my experience.  I have used the Laserjet Pro 200 black and white only edition, the MFP, and the TopShot edition where I am located.

  • How or where do I find the printer year? HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus

How can I get the printer year for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus? I have looked in printer staus report and the various labels I can find on the printer itself. I'm sure I'm just missing it.I bought it new, so I do not have any reason to think the information was removed prior to purchase. Thanks

The printer status report has in line 47 the date (rounded to the week) the printhead was installed.  Except in the rare case the printhead has been replaced this would correspond to the date the printer was installed.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus copy prints with black streaks

I just bought an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus and it seems to work great at printing; however, when I tried to copy something, the copy came out with black streaks that nearly render the print illegible and are the most dark/condensed towards the left hand side of page.
How do I fix this problem?
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
It could be due to the scan calibration issue during power on.
Power off the Printer, make sure scan lid closed properly. Now power it on, it will do scan calibration.
Now try to do the copy and see the results.
    Hope it will help you.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

    Hello.
I have the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus running on Windows 7. The printer is connected to computer by network and it is linked to the computer.
All was well with the printer untill I removed Norton and installed McAfee two days ago. Now it will not work, even with McAfee turned off.
I tried to uninstall and re install the printers programmes and driver, but it will not re install the programme or driver.
I have uninstalled all HP prog's.
Stopped all start up prog's except the Microsoft ones.
    Turned off McAfee
Gone to HP and re installed the software and drivers.
These downloaded fine (took a few minutes and 123.00 MB copied) and installed.
Accepted HP licence terms and ran printer installation programme.
    Got instalation complete message.
But it is not installing!  Where is it downloading the programme and driver to?
Downloaded the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This finds printer and says programmes not installed. it then downloads them, but it never works. Even with McAfee firewall and scanning all turned off. If I then run it again, I get the same mesasage the programmes not installed, though it just seemed to do it....
If I go to devices / printers there is no Officejet Pro icon like there was. If I try install new printer there, I does not find the correct drivers for this HP model.
If I go to Start, all Programmes, HP and click on these icons I get message "Shortcut moved or changed"
I am at whits end with this now. Absolutly hate the McAfee.
    Please help.  Nick
    PS.
I have got the printer partly working by using the windows available driver HP Officejet Pro K8600 Series, but this is not the correct driver. It will not scan and has very limited printing functionality.
Windows also shows a FAX - HP Officejet Pro 8600 driver, but this did not work when I tried it. Is this the proper driver for this printer??
When I try to get windows to download new drivers it goes looking but says it is unavailable and to try again later.  :-(

    Hey there @Nick-S!
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I can see that you are experiencing some software issues with the Officejet Pro 8600 after re-installing McAfee.  I would be happy to provide some suggestions that may help resolve the issue!
I suggest restoring the network defaults in the printer, power cycling the router and reconfiguring the printer on the wireless network.   To restore the network defaults press the Wi-Fi icon on the printer and go into settings.  Under settings should be an option to restore the network defaults.  Once the network defaults in the printer have been restored power cycle the printer and power cycle the router for 20 seconds.  When the printer turns back on press the Wi-Fi icon again, go back into settings and run the wireless setup wizard.
I understand you have re-installed the software but the printer is still not recognised.  I recommend uninstalling the HP software one more time.  After the uninstall is complete it would be a good idea to perform a disk cleanup in the computer. A disk cleanup will improve computer performance and clear temporary files that may cause issues during the install of software. Once the disk cleanup is complete you should restart the computer and re-install the HP software.
To uninstall HP software click here: Uninstalling HP Software
To perform a disk cleanup click here: Performing a Disk Cleanup
To download the HP software click here: HP Officejet 8600 Plus Software and Driver

  • Unable to Completely Scan Legal Size Documents with Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

I am trying scan legal sized documents on my new Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. I have reviewed the forums, and this has been a recurring problem in the past (see link---  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/Scanning-Legal-Size-Documents/m-p/35416#M14...   ), but does not appear to be resolved. Whether I use the document feeder or the glass, the document is cut off at the bottom, and appears to be stopping at the 'A4' size, vs. legal. I cannot locate any setting on the scanner itself, or in the HP Utility software to change this, or even to be able to identify the current setting, if it is one.
I am using a Mac Pro, system 10.6.8, just installed and started using the printer a couple of days ago, and everything is up to date software-wise. Everything else on this machine has been working beautifully.
Can anyone identify what's going on here and how to correct it?
Thanks for your help--I specifically chose this particular unit over the next model down due to the legal sized glass/bed, and if I can't use it to scan legal docs, well, that's a problem. Thanks for your help!

  • How do I print 4x6 photos on an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus via Windows Photo Viewer or Gallery

Dear Experts, I've got an HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer with just one paper tray in which I loaded 4x6 photo paper.
The printer was purchased in January 2014, the latest drivers are installed. Now I would like to print a single 4x6 photo using Windows Photo Viewer or Gallery.I loaded the 4x6 photo paper  into the tray as indicated by the little icon labeled 4x6in, so I suppose I got the HW part right. It's just the SW part which gives me a hard time. The available paper size options in Windows Photo Viewer and Gallerydon't include photo paper sizes, just the standard paper and envelope sizes.Hence I checked in the HP Printer Assistant in "Set Preferences" what kind of paper sizes are available, and there is exactly the same list as proposed by Gallery, missing photo paper sizes. So I guess Gallery just picks the sizes from the driver and ther are no photo paper sizes. This is an issue because I prefer to print from my PC using Win 7 or Win 8 and not from a SD card or a USB stick. Any help is very welcome, thank you in advance!

Thank you for this link! Actually I installed a brand new Windows 8 system in January 2014 and then bought the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer a few days later. To install this printer I did not use the CD that came with it but already used this link. Just to be sure that I have the latest version I again reinstalled the driver. The result is definitive: You cannot print common photo paper sizes like 4x6,  5x7, 8x10, etc. via a PC using photo SW like HP Photo Creations, MS Gallery, Windows Photo Viewer or any other SW on a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. The reason is most likely that HP marketing decided that an Officejet should not be smart enough for photos, after all the company sells also Photosmarts. Because you cannot create your own formats  you are limited by the driver to what is typically available in an office, in this case:  A4, Letter, legal, Statement, Executive, A4, A5, A6, B54 (JIS), Envelopes #10-DL-C5-C6-A2-Monarch, Japanese Postcard, Japanese Envelope Chou #3-#4, L, 2L, O**bleep**u hagaki, Index Card Letter-A4, Edge-to-Edge Letter-A4, Env. Japanese No 3-No 4 and that's it, not more. Thank you anyway for trying to help me but in this case only the SW developers in HP can help.It would be great to be able to print from time to time a 4x6 photo on this printer like I would do.Copying photos on a USB stick or on a SD card first and then use this way to print on the printer is too cumbersome for me.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus suddenly has scan malfunctions

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus which has worked fine up to one week ago. Now and for no apparent reason the scan function has decided to work intermittently. Whenever I use the HP software and use the scan option, the scanner starts up and does its pre-check, starts to scan and then either stops halfway or scans the document/picture but then saves a blank file or PDF afterwards.
I have done a semi-full reset on the printer and set it up again. No change. I have completely deinstalled all HP software, rebooted, reinstalled - no change. I have stopped and started services - no change.
This is driving me crazy as I bought the printer less than six months ago and was up to now pleased with it. All other functionality is working correctly. I can copy documents in a few seconds, printing works fine.
Tried to do a firmware update - message received that it is not applicable. Updated HP Software to newest version. No change.
    I am using Windows 8.1 64 bit.
I would like to try a full reset, but don't have this option only the semi-full reset, when I access the service menu. If I cannot resolve this, then I am afraid it will be the last HP printer I ever buy as this has really cheesed me off.
    Please help!

I don't wish to be the proverbial bearer of ill tidings but....after spending entirely too many hours talking with several HP tech support "technicians" and on HP support chat sessions with other "technicians," I can tell you that, so far, no one at HP has a clue how to solve this problem. Several times tech support used a remote session on my workstation, but after lots of "trial and error" efforts succeded in restoring the scan function only by running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. I have found that the HP Print and Scan Doctor will always restore the scan-to-computer function - it's a nuisance, but so far nothing else will do the job.
When the 8620 quits scanning, sometimes immediately after successfully scanning multiple documents, I find that my router "sees" the HP 8620 and I can successfully ping its IP address. I can even print(!) but the 8620 seems to be oblivious to its network connection for scanning.
Tech support has offered the usual "solutions" like: turn off the 8620 and turn it on again, update thr firmware, reinstall the driver, use an Ethernet or USB connection (which defeats the purpose of Wi-Fi), and even doing what I took to be a "hard" reboot (unplug the 8620 while power is on, wait 60 seconds, hold down the power button for 30 seconds, plug the AIO in while holding the power button). So far no one has suggested re-installing Windows.
Tech support even insisted that the cause of the 8620 failing to maintain its connection to the network was my having the 8620 draw its power through a multiple outlet power strip. Willing to try just about anything short of examining chicken entrails, I now have the same failure to scan with power coming directly from a 20 amp circuit outlet.
There was a time when a short call to HP tech support fixed the rare problems with HP products.

The installation CD that came with your 8600 will definitely not work with Windows 8.1 and is not same as the latest online download which you will need to install on Win8.1.
Are you running Win8.1 Pro 32 or 64 bit?
