Officejet Pro 8600 Plus scanner failure

I have an Officejet Pro 8600 Plus all-in-one. When I first got it, all of the features worked fine: print, scan, and copy. A few weeks ago, it started to not scan or copy, and printer was hit or miss. I have managed to resolve the printing issue, but it still wont scan or copy. I have tried uninstalling the printer both from the hp folder and control panel and then reinstalling the driver (I have the full feature one). I have tried the scan and print doctor, and it doesnt make it past the second step. The error message the printer displays is, "scanner failure: unable to scan, copy, or send a fax." I have also followed the steps to go into services, and both of the necessary dependencies are listed for the WIA, and the RPC and shell hardware are both started. Please help.

Hello ld2hx,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with scanning, copying and faxing.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
Please click on the following link for A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Scanner Software

    Hi,
I'm a big fan of HP products.  My last several printers, scanners and computers have all been HP.
I recently purchased the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus to replace an older machine with similar capabilities (ADF, duplex printing, etc).  The previous machine was also an HP printer.
The problem that I'm having is that the software seems to  have been downgraded.  The software on my previous machine had the ability to automatically parse pictures laid on the flatbed scanner into individual JPGs.  With the software on this machine, it seems that I need to manually crop each image.  The options for optimizing each image, by removing scratches, automatically adjusting color, sharpening, etc. are all gone.
I really miss these features.  I did find that I had been using a 'Basic' version of the software.  I installed the full version and found it slightly different, but it still lacks the automatic image selection and image tweaks that I made such heavy use of.
Is there any way to get these options back?
    Thank you,
    --MrXmas
    This question was solved.

    NeonSkeleton,
That is unfortunate.  It's a **bleep** nice machine except that the software is really a step backwards.
Is there any way to use the older software from another HP device?  The standard microsoft scanner drivers don't do anything towards my need.  The network connection seems to be a stumbling block for most of what's out there.  I'd be happy to hard-wire via USB if that could get me the software upgrade (the speed over USB is a considerable improvement as well).
If it isn't possible to use another HP driver, do you have any recommendations for 3rd party drivers?
    Thanks for your help,
    Jim

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus scanner has become cloudy

I used the scanner to scan hundreds of photos and it was working perfectly throughout.
A couple weeks later I try scan some more and all of a sudden the left edge of my scan is coming out all cloudy.
    For example, see http://www.lovettsoftware.com/downloads/hp/cloudy.png
Is there a way to clean, or recalibrate or do anything to fix this or is the scanner toast ?

Thanks for the link to the user guide.  I tried all the glass cleaning ideas, but I see no improvement in scan quality.
I switched to a Canon Pixma scanner and the cloud is gone, so I'll go with that for now.
    For comparison:
The bad scan from HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus: http://www.lovettsoftware.com/downloads/hp/scan4.png
The good scan from Canon Pixma: http://www.lovettsoftware.com/downloads/hp/scan8.png
Notice the gray fuzzy tint around the top left edges is gone in the Canon scan.
Feel free to pass this along to your engineers so they can work on designing a scanner that lasts better.  I really didn't do that many scans, I did 565 scans, in fact.  I would expect the scanner to last a lot longer than that.

  • Officejet pro 8600 plus Printer failure - there is a problem with the printer or ink system...

Arghhh!  Like so many people on the forum I have today encountered this problem - it was working fine until it needed the magenta cartridge replaced.  (I have replaced the other colours successfully over the last couple of weeks).
Once I replaced magenta the message came up.  I have tried all the suggestions on the troubleshooting pages with removing the print head a couple of times, trying all the cartridges and cleaning the connections.  I am loathe to go down the road of any cost as the printer is just over 6 months old!
Given the cost of it I would expect much better for my money.  I did buy extra warranty from Staples, so will be calling them tomorrow, but I can't really wait the 30 days it could take with a daughter in her final year at University and so on - really disappointed and disgruntled.
I might have to go and buy ink for one of the other two printers I have in the house, but I really liked this and the fact that everyone could connect via wifi.  That has been problematical and I wondered if that was the problem as I can't clean the printheads from the computer software and I can't get any other 'page' on the control panel .
    Anyone got any suggestions, please.

Is your printer still in warranty - it should be if only six months old? You can check with HP's warranty tool here.
I would suggest you call HP, 1-800-HPINVENt if you are in North America.  They should be able to either resolve the issue on the phone or send a replacement printer, it should be a lot faster than 30 days.  When I have needed a warranty replacement it was generally a few days.

  • Macbook Pro running Maverick doesn't recognize Officejet Pro 8600 Plus as a scanner

I am a new user to the Macbook, transitioning from Windows. I started with a preexisting Offciejet Pro 8500 but couldn't get it to work and discovered there were no Maverick drivers. I then bought and  installed the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus wirelessly. I downloaded the HP software package for Mac. I can print. I can scan from the printer to the computer. I can use the HP Scan utility (although the HP apps folder also contains the 8500 apps and I'm not sure which is which). However, under System Preferences Printers and Scanners it only lists the 8600 as a printer and faxer; it does not appear under Scanner. And I cannot access it using PDF Converter for Mac, either.  And it refuses to scan an entire legal page, stopping at the letter page limits, whether I use the document feeder or just place it on the glass.
( I also cannot figure out how to set up Network scanning - it asks for a folder address and I am not familiar with iOS nomenclature.)

    Hi lahrm
I understand  you are having issues scanning on the Maverick.
I will be happy to assist you with this.
I have included a document for how to scan on the Maverick.

How do I attach a wireless scanner (HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus) to Acrobat XI Pro?

The printer status report has in line 47 the date (rounded to the week) the printhead was installed.  Except in the rare case the printhead has been replaced this would correspond to the date the printer was installed.

  • HP officejet pro 8600 plus need to reset, but no screen access due to head error

    hi,
I had some HP's 8600 but one of them it is dead as printer and it was replaced.
I need to use it only as scanner (no printing since its problem are the printing heads). The problem I cannot access to the menu through the screen since it is stock with the message mentioning the fail on printing head. The next option it is to watch a demo about heads.
Im trying to access in order to fix a new static ip for the scan.
Is there a way to reset so the printing gets an dhcp ip add? So far the scanner works fine through USB connection.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello @Rodrigo_cl,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer has encountered a hardware Printhead failure and is not allowing you to scan using a static IP because of this. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue.
Now, due to the error on the front panel of the printer, you will not be able to perform any resets on your machine. But, if your printer is currently on the network with an automatic IP we can utilize the embedded web server to configure a static IP.
Is your printer currently on your wireless or wired network?
Once I know if your printer is currently on the network, I can guide you towards configuring the static IP through the computer. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus suddenly has scan malfunctions

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus which has worked fine up to one week ago. Now and for no apparent reason the scan function has decided to work intermittently. Whenever I use the HP software and use the scan option, the scanner starts up and does its pre-check, starts to scan and then either stops halfway or scans the document/picture but then saves a blank file or PDF afterwards.
I have done a semi-full reset on the printer and set it up again. No change. I have completely deinstalled all HP software, rebooted, reinstalled - no change. I have stopped and started services - no change.
This is driving me crazy as I bought the printer less than six months ago and was up to now pleased with it. All other functionality is working correctly. I can copy documents in a few seconds, printing works fine.
Tried to do a firmware update - message received that it is not applicable. Updated HP Software to newest version. No change.
    I am using Windows 8.1 64 bit.
I would like to try a full reset, but don't have this option only the semi-full reset, when I access the service menu. If I cannot resolve this, then I am afraid it will be the last HP printer I ever buy as this has really cheesed me off.
    Please help!

I don't wish to be the proverbial bearer of ill tidings but....after spending entirely too many hours talking with several HP tech support "technicians" and on HP support chat sessions with other "technicians," I can tell you that, so far, no one at HP has a clue how to solve this problem. Several times tech support used a remote session on my workstation, but after lots of "trial and error" efforts succeded in restoring the scan function only by running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. I have found that the HP Print and Scan Doctor will always restore the scan-to-computer function - it's a nuisance, but so far nothing else will do the job.
When the 8620 quits scanning, sometimes immediately after successfully scanning multiple documents, I find that my router "sees" the HP 8620 and I can successfully ping its IP address. I can even print(!) but the 8620 seems to be oblivious to its network connection for scanning.
Tech support has offered the usual "solutions" like: turn off the 8620 and turn it on again, update thr firmware, reinstall the driver, use an Ethernet or USB connection (which defeats the purpose of Wi-Fi), and even doing what I took to be a "hard" reboot (unplug the 8620 while power is on, wait 60 seconds, hold down the power button for 30 seconds, plug the AIO in while holding the power button). So far no one has suggested re-installing Windows.
Tech support even insisted that the cause of the 8620 failing to maintain its connection to the network was my having the 8620 draw its power through a multiple outlet power strip. Willing to try just about anything short of examining chicken entrails, I now have the same failure to scan with power coming directly from a 20 amp circuit outlet.
There was a time when a short call to HP tech support fixed the rare problems with HP products.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus - Scan software doesn't have 8.5x11 letter size option

Just bought a new Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.
The included HP Scan software will only let me choose A4 or A5 paper sizes (as well as 6x4, 7x5, 8x6, 10x8).  No 8.5x11 option, which is what I want to use most often.  (this is from the dropdown options after clicking the "Scan..." button)
Is there something I'm missing?  I'm generally pretty good at figuring this stuff out, but I haven't even seen this issue mentioned on forums, so I'm confused.
Also, when using the Scan To Computer function directly from the printer, I get the same result - it will scan my 8.5x11 document and output an A4 size file.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.  I have installed all software and firmware updates I could find.  I have my printer's region set to Canada, and bought the machine from a Staples in Canada.  Wondering why I can't use any North American size formats?

@Simple1234 - I have reinstalled the software from HP's website, and no change. (it's actually the same version that came on the installation CD - 12.23).
@Sethaniel - I have definitely tried every combination of settings in those drop down lists, so that's not it.
Ruling out OS issues, my girlfriend is running 10.8, and the HP software is doing the same thing on her computer.
Using the System Preferences scanning method, I can choose paper sizes if set to scan from document feeder.  If I change to flatbed, I have the option to manually type in the dimensions I want, but then I'm forced to manually drag the crop area to which 8.5x11 portion of the flatbed it will scan.  Again, there's no way to just have the flatbed scan a letter size document automatically when placing the page at the top corner of the flatbed, where it shows you to place the page for letter size.
This seems like the most basic function of a scanner!  I'm really perplexed by this.  I would imagine most people in north america would just want to place an 8.5x11 sheet of paper on the flatbed and have an easy way to scan the correct size with no added fuss.
Printing works fine, and I can choose letter size, and many adjustable settings, so I think this is just a problem with HP's scanning software.  I have tried all the usual basic steps, like restarting my computer & the printer, reinstalling software, running software update, looking through all the settings in the HP Scan software, any global settings I could change in System Preferences, tried using a different computer and OS X version, googling the issue, and posting on this forum.
    Any other ideas?

  • OSX 10.8.5 CS5.5 & HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

I bought the HP Officejet Pro 8600 plus believeing it is MAC OSX compatable however upon trying to scan into Adobe CS5.5 suite of applications I was not able to scan into any of the Adobe CS programs. I can scan from the scanner into a PDF that the HP printer makes and place it in a folder on my computer but I cannot Scan directly into Adobe Acrobat X or any of the CS5.5 programs.
After a few hrs of searching I found on the user manual on page 50 the following
"The HP Scanning Software does not support TWAIN and WIA scanning on
    computers running Mac OS X."
I need to know if this issue has been resolved and if so what is the solution or workaround to scan directly into Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign or any of the other Adobe CS5.5 master suite collection.
From what I have read it seems that there are two issues here
1 most programs are moving away from twain and WIA in favor of something else forget what it is and HP moved on but did not consider backward compatability important so they didn't include what is needed.
    2. Adobe could use a patch for this other format
If there is no current solution I will return the MFP (multi-function printer) and look for a replacement. I would appreciate any reccomendations from the community for an MFP that works pain free with Adobe CS5.5 and Mac OSX.
Looking for high quality scan with document feeder and flatbed, photo print capability does not need to fax.
    Thank you your assistance.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus - "Scan to Computer" issue on Mac OSX 10.8 or 10.9

    Hi...
I have started experiencing the notorious "scan to computer not working" issue on my 1-month OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, after having used the feature a number of times flawlessly.
There are a lot of potential solutions mentioned in dozens of relevant posts for both Mac and Windows, e.g.:
"Failed to open a session on the device"...
Scan to computer does not work...
Problem scanning to computer with an 8600 wireless
Unable to enable print to computer...
Enable Scan to Computer - Communication Error
Officejet Pro 8600 Utility does not show my Mac computer in scan settings
A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning
HP Wireless All-in-One Printers - Communication Error between the Scanner and Your Computer...
    Etc.
However, in my case, no solution works, after several frustrating hours of trying to fix the issue, in Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), or after upgrading to Maverics (10.9).
The behavior of the device points to a software issue, since:
The printer is visible on the network
The print function has been working fine
    The HP Scan function works
The generic Scan function from System Preferences works (although in earlier times it did not, or it stopped working soon after invoking it)
The "Scan to Computer" option does not appear in the HP Utility screen (although occasionally, after random sequences of unistalling and installing the software, it reappears)
The HP Installer crashes before completing the installation (this is a latest symptom, apparently happening before unvoking the HP Setup Assistant, which still works fine)
As already mentioned, I have tried all possible solutions, including software and firmware updates, Apple drivers, HP drivers (full featured software), clean (un)installations, followed by computer and printer restarts. Nothing seems to work.
The "Scan to Computer" feature of the 8600 always works on my Windows 7 laptop, after initial configuration.
The next step will be returning the device for a refund, but before resorting to that, I am giving it a last chance, in (the unlikely) case there is something new I have not tried yet.
    Thanks,
    PNS

  • Unable to Completely Scan Legal Size Documents with Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

I am trying scan legal sized documents on my new Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. I have reviewed the forums, and this has been a recurring problem in the past (see link---  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/Scanning-Legal-Size-Documents/m-p/35416#M14...   ), but does not appear to be resolved. Whether I use the document feeder or the glass, the document is cut off at the bottom, and appears to be stopping at the 'A4' size, vs. legal. I cannot locate any setting on the scanner itself, or in the HP Utility software to change this, or even to be able to identify the current setting, if it is one.
I am using a Mac Pro, system 10.6.8, just installed and started using the printer a couple of days ago, and everything is up to date software-wise. Everything else on this machine has been working beautifully.
Can anyone identify what's going on here and how to correct it?
Thanks for your help--I specifically chose this particular unit over the next model down due to the legal sized glass/bed, and if I can't use it to scan legal docs, well, that's a problem. Thanks for your help!

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (All-in-One) - Incoming Fax but mistakenly answer phone

I have landline phone service.  On this line, I have multiple phones, an answering machine, internet service via wireless Uverse setup, and the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus as a fax.  It's also a printer/scanner - but that uses the wireless Uverse service.
The unit works as a phone, if I answer in fewer than 4 rings.  The answer machine picks up after 4 rings.  If a fax, the fax connects after 6 rings.  (Auto answer function is turned on.)  This works.
If I mistakenly answer a fax call with the phone that the HP 8600 is connected through, I can press: 1,2,3 and the fax will answer.  This works.
Problem: If I mistakenly answer a fax call from one of the other phones in the house (same phone line is ringing as before - but the phone is NOT the one through which the HP 8600 is connected) - 1,2,3, does NOT work.  If I rush to the HP 8600: pressing the "fax" button on the unit does not connect the fax call; nor does the HP 8600 give me the option to "Accept" the call, when the phone as been answered.
Does anyone know what buttons to push to get the fax to connect when the phone line is answered at a phone?  Either at the answered phone OR if I can get to the HP 8600 when I hear the fax tone - buttons I can push on the HP 8600 to get it to respond to the fax tones coming in on the line?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I see that you have some concerns when it comes to answering a fax call by accident from another phone.  Pressing the 1.2.3 on the fax is the proper way to remedy the issue when you answer from the fax, however this feature will not work from another phone.
I do realize that this is an inconvenience.  The only resolution would be to contact the sender of the fax and have them resend.
