Official unlock for all Original iPhones

Given that the maximum subsidy period for any of the original iPhones was 24 months, would it be rational to expect that 24 months after the very last sale of an original iphone, that apple would release a carrier update to ALL original iphones to network unlock them?
I see no logical or commercial reason why this should not be done. Apple keep going after 'green' points, making slightly more useful many thousands of original handsets is plenty green in my opinion.

Regardless, at the end of the day it is the carrier that initiates this, not Apple.
AT&T will unlock some AT&T carrier locked phones when requested by a subscriber during a 2 year contract or after the contract expires, but they aren't obligated to do so by law and AT&T doesn't do this for all AT&T carrier locked phones. If AT&T wanted to unlock an iPhone sold in the U.S., all they need to do is send Apple the request if indeed this is required. This is up to AT&T and AT&T only in the U.S.

  • Official unlock for iphone

    Dear Sir/Madame,
Is it possible to buy official unlock for iphone? I love Apple products. But I live in Russia and cannot buy official iPhone. I had to buy unlocked one. Is it possible to buy official unlock for iphone so that I could update my iphone software and buy software in AppStore?

Iphone is carrier locked to the provider in the country in which it is purchased.
You can get an official iphone when it is released in your country.

This is the best invention to make people buy new devices. Why am I asking this to Apple???? Maybe I´m wrong and I have to ask to Microsoft or maybe Google? There is a law that obligates all carrier companies to unlock those devices that are off contract. But even with this, this company denies to do it. They suppor their idea in the fact that that law was published on Oct´12, so brilliantly they have solved to unluck only those devices bought after that date..... I have all those evidences but all are in spanish.....

  • Why is the ios6 compatible for all the iphones but not all the phones got the all upgrades, for example the panorama camera??

why is the ios6 compatible for all the iphones but not all the phones got the all upgrades, for example the panorama camera?? this is another reason I am starting to dislike apple. An ipod is able to us an upgrade but not all the phones are? makes sense

"why is the ios6 compatible for all the iphones"
Ios 6 is not available for all iphones. Original Iphone and iphone 3 are not supported.
"but not all the phones got the all upgrades, "
This is common for most any device/computer.  Not all iphone/computer/device models can handle all of the new features.  Like any device, hardware is limited and cannot always support all new features and software.

  • Is the iPad 2 charger the same as the charger for the original iPhone?

My understanding is that the charger that comes with the iPad 2 is more powerful and will charge the iPad 2 more quickly than will the charger that comes with the iPhone 4. However, the iPad 2 charger is the same shape as the charger that came with the original iPhone. Does anyone know whether the iPad 2 charger and the original iPhone charger are identical in function? (BTW, my understanding is that the iPad 2 charger will not charge the iPhone 4 faster than that phone's charger will).

No, they're not the same. I compared mine awhile back and while they're the same shape, the iPad 2 one has writing on it that says "10 W USB Adapter". The one for the original iPhone doesn't have that writing, but if you compare the detailed input-output information, it does show that it is less powerful.
I believe that's why Apple changed to the two different sizes, so you can quickly determine which are for "phone" type devices and which are for "larger" type devices.

  • Official solution for unlocking for an old iPhone 3GS

Last summer, I purchased an iPhone 3GS together with a 2-year contract with Swisscom, one of the mobile telephone operators in Switzerland. A few weeks ago, my phone was stolen while I was on a trip. I contacted Swisscom and informed them that the phone had been stolen. They deactivated the old SIM card, and sent me a replacement SIM card. I reported the theft to the police too. My understanding is that the IMEI number of my old iPhone will be added to a blacklist so that it cannot be used on any mobile telephone networks anymore.
My father, who lives in Texas, recently upgraded from an iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 4. He extended his original contract with AT&T and simply moved his number over to the new phone. Because he no longer had a need for his old iPhone 3GS, he agreed to send it to me. At my suggestion, he went first to the Apple Store in Austin and requested that they unlock the phone. The folks at the Apple Store informed him that they could not unlock it. They suggested that Apple or the mobile carrier in Switzerland could unlock the phone.
My father shipped his old iPhone 3GS to me, and I received it yesterday. This morning, I went to the Apple Store in Zürich and asked if they could unlock the phone so that I could use it with my Swisscom SIM card—the one Swisscom sent me to replace the one in my stolen iPhone. They told me that they could not do this, and that only the original carrier, AT&T could unlock the phone.
What is the official solution for unlocking an old iPhone 3GS?
I have posted this question to the AT&T discussion forum also.

    Does Apple have a recommendation?
Read my post. There is nothing that Apple can do for you. The decision as to whether to unlock your phone or not rests entirely with AT&T, & they will not do so under any circumstances.
I read your post, and appreciate your having taken the time to write it. However, I would like to get an official reply from someone at Apple.
Apple is a company that prides itself on its commitment to the highest standards of environmental stewardship.
    http://www.apple.com/environment/
Apple’s partner AT&T is also committed to being a good corporate citizen and protecting the natural environment.
    http://www.att.com/gen/corporate-citizenship?pid=8506
Re-using old products to extend their useable lifetimes is one of the most effective ways of reducing the impact we have on the environment. When my phone was stolen, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to put this philosophy into action, using my dad’s old phone to use instead of just throwing it away, or leaving it on a shelf to be discarded later.
I think it would be a shame if there were no officially sanctioned way to put an old device to good use.

  • How to get official unlock for old iphone 3gs?

Hi, I switched to Verizon iPhone 4, so my old AT&T iPhone 3gs is no longer in use.
I travel internationally and would like to unlock my old iPhone 3gs so I can use it with sim cards when I travel.
I understand there is now an "official" unlocking that can happen through iTunes. Is that true? How can I do it?
Or is there another way to unlock my old phone that is legal?
    Thanks!

Yes, it is, however, verizon will unlock your SIM card slot for free. The requirements:
    * Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
    * The iPhone 4S being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
    * The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
    * The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
    * Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.
You can go here for all the details.
I can confirm this as I did it last November for my sister before she traveled to London.

  • Credit for Purchasing Original iPhone at Full Price?

I have been out of the country for several months, so I know I'm a little behind here, but was there ever any sort of compensation for those of us who purchased the original iPhone at full price? I heard that there was an iTunes credit or something similar.
If there is any sort of compensation, could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks so much!

    Anyone???
Because #1 & #2 dont make sense unless there is a cost difference based on whether you bought your old iPhone before or after Apple dropped the price.
I 'm not sure where the confusion lies. The 1st gen iPhone has been out for a year. There was a price decrease after the first 3 months, and as a concession to early adopters, there was a rebate/refund of $50 or $100 back to the iPhone purchasers. That offer has now, as mentioned above, expired.
The 1st gen iPhone was not subsidized by AT&T, so the user paid for the phone up front, and then subsequently the contract charges (including the $20 data plan) each month for the projected 2-year period. Since all 1st gen iPhone owners *by definition* got non-subsidized iPhones, AT&T says we are eligible for the lowest tier pricing. So are current AT&T users who have fulfilled their current contracts that included a subsidized phone.
The second price tier is for an early upgrade. This from the AT&T site: "You have the option to purchase an early upgrade priced at $399 for 8GB (black) or $499 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required." That's for folks who are still in a contract for a subsidized phone.
    Hope this helps.

  • Want to get a factory unlock for my 2G iPhone

Hi all I have a first gen iPhone that is just sitting around ( my 3G replaced it ) and I noted that overseas iphones are factory unlocked as well as I have read that there are some here that have bought the phone out right and get At&t or Apple unlock the phone . Does anyone know about this or were I could take it to be factory unlocked ?

No AT&T does not offer unlocking.
All U.S. Iphones are carrier locked to AT&T and cannot be legitimately unlocked.

  • Headphones for the Original iPhone?

Besides the V-Moda Vibe - of which I've had two pair; both broke - can someone recommend a decent set of in-ear headphones that will work with the first gen iPhone? I'm working with $100-$150.
    Thanks!

The thing is, not every headphone jack fits the original iPhone. I got a pair of Bose headphones for Christmas and they did not fit, for instance. I had some great in-ear buds for my iPod when the iPhone came out and they didn't fit.
If you use Ultimate Ears with a first gen iPhone, which model are they? At least I'll know those fit.

  • I am using a common apple id for all apple iphone 5 devices in my family now when i am using iMessage to communicate between 2 phones on the same apple id the third iPhone is also getting the same message.

Kindly help me out with this issue

Well, since all your devices are literally using the same iMessage account, of course they share posts.
The cleanest solution is for those other devices to get their own AppleID to use with iMessages so every device has its own unique iMessage account (same thing goes for iCloud).
You can have multiple AppleIDs, and you do not need to use the same one for all Apple accounts or services.  e.g. you can use the common AppleID for the iTunes and App store to share purchased content, but use unique AppleIDs for iMessage and/or iCloud to keep those account separate.

  • 'Locate Me' not functioning at all (Original iPhone)

    Hi
Since I've upgraded to iPhone 2.0 (and now 2.0.1 - I've not had a chance to upgrade to 2.0.2 yet since I've not been near my own computer long enough), the 'locate me' function in Google Maps (and, indeed, elsewhere), doesn't seem to work much at all.
In fact, it has located me only once since the update. Then, it took a while, and suddenly located me when I'd given up hope and wasn't paying attention. Then, it did a good job or keeping up with me, relocating my position every few seconds and generally looking better than the old 1.1.4 software.
However, since then it's not located me at all. As an experiment, I turned off the screen auto-lock, and left the phone trying to locate me (admittedly with WiFi turned off, but connected to a pretty strong EDGE signal), to see how long it would take. After an hour, I gave up. (I should note, however, that turning on WiFi still resulted in it not being able to locate me, I just didn't wait as long)
What could be wrong here? The locating feature was reasonably quick in 1.1.4, nothing physical has changed with the phone, so it must be something to do with the software. Location Services is turned on.
    Any thoughts?

After a week or so of mucking about and reading up on the problem, I think I know what causes it and how to fix it. I have resolved the issue on my 2g iPhone running the 2.02 software.
From what I think I know:
Version 2 of the iPhone software uses a system called Skyhook to locate you as its primary method. In order for Skyhook to function properly, wi-fi must be turned on in your iphone settings. Contrary to what I orginally believed, you *do not* need to be connected to any wi-fi network, it just needs to be turned on. The iphone will then have a look around and find the wifi base stations local to you, and use the data connection in your iPhone to contact Skyhook and get the location of those wi-fi stations. Once the data has been returned to your iphone, you wail have a faux gps fix. If no wi-fi stations are available in the area, it will simply fall-back to the original cell phone triangulation method on the 2g iPhone to find you. But the whole think falls apart if wi-fi is not turned on. Remember you do not need to be connected or joined to someone elses network, the wi-fi on your iphone just needs to be turned on.
I think the bug is that if wi-fi is off, the Skyhook function doesnt get called, and the iPhone never falls back to EDGE/GPRS triangulation.
I have tested this with the my wi-fi router turned off in my home. The iPhone located me in about a minute on the 2g version with no connection other than edge. This also seems to match with the you-tube video.
