Official word on memory?

Apple says that the memory sticks in the Intel Mac Minis need to match (i.e. 2x512mb). I've heard both that that's true and that that's misinformation. What's the official word? Can you get a stock Mac Mini with 2x256, rip out one of the 256 sticks, and pop in a 1gb stick? Has anyone tried it? Do they actually have to match? I've heard of no other PC or Mac that absolutely requires matched sticks.
Thanks for any help, and I hope to be joining the Intel Mac Mini userbase soon... and this question depends highly on how soon that will be.
Also, I've asked this before (it's in a long gone post, I'm sure), but anything I should look out for with the new Intel Minis? Any glaring problems? In other words, how do you like yours? Planning on using mine as mainly a media and development machine - and compared to Apple's other Intel offerings, the price just can't be beat.

Oh I'm fully aware of Apple... um, bending the truth to make a few extra bucks off of you and have even been hit by it twice before I wised up.
I'm not too concerned about running in dual channel mode. I just want to order a stock mini and replace one of the 256 (can offload the extra to a friend who is always looking for spare computer components) sticks with a 1gb. More bang for the buck and whatnot. 1.25gb of memory for $118 instead of 1gb for $100. Sure, $18 isn't a lot, but it's better than $0. More to spend on an external drive and enclosure to boot/run off of (using the internal 5400rpm drive for storage exclusively).
I'm all about cost-effectiveness. Or maybe I'm just a cheapskate. Heh heh. And if I decide I want 2gb in there at some point, I can pop another gig in for dual channel goodness.
Thank you much! About to whip out the credit card... must... restrain.... self.

  • Dead N8's Any Official Word From Nokia?

I am one of the many unfortunate N8 owners whose phone has died and or has continually restarted.
Is there any chance of an official word from Nokia as to why this is happening & when suppliers will receive sufficient stock to replace these faulty units?
If it's of any concern to Nokia some of us on contracts are now paying revised premiums to our providers for phones we haven't got or are unable to use.
Come on Nokia man up let us know what's happening.

As far as I know, there is even a section
HERE! Location-based services from Nokia: Maps, Navigation and GPS
There's not much effort needed to find tones of threads for WP and almost none for Symbian.
There are even official video stickers of HERE Maps working on Lumia phones.
So I presume that yes, everybody is discussing HERE services round here. Why not do that for Symbian?
Besides, Nokia has made a commitment to provide lifetime voice-guided nav for Symbian devices. Without updates, the navigation is useless. If Lumia based phones are getting updates, I see no reason for us not getting them. I don't care who owns HERE (which is still Nokia, BTW). I purchased a Nokia phone.
I should definitely claim for it HERE.

  • Official Word from Apple re: anti-virus

What's the official word from Apple regarding anti-virus and its use with FCP?

There are currently no known virii that can affect Mac OS X. None whatsoever.
So when one does eventually turn up, you will have no protection at all because virus detection relies on your AV software being up to date with it's definitions that identify the virus signature.
While it will not be affected, your computer can still act as a virus carrier though, in that you can pass on an infected file from one Windows user to another. Depends on what your points of contact with others are. Limit those and you will increase security.
I send and receive files via FTP, sometimes dealing with people that I do not know. That computer has the free [ClamXav|http://www.clamxav.com> anti-virus on it. It is set to check my Mail and FTP Downloads folders only. The machine is not used for editing even though I have ClamXav limited in what it searches. Most commercial products constantly scan everything, which as already noted will have an effect on performance.

  • Official word on AIR on Modern UI

Is there an official word on AIR on Modern UI. At this point we have conflicting answers. In the 2013 roadmap [1] for flash and AIR saying that there is no plan to devlop AIR for Modern UI and Microsoft saying that no app sold through the Windows app can have flash[2].
On the other hand, we have Lee Brimelow[3] saying that it should come in the first half of 2013 and the Adobe Lab for AIR, in the product details[4] says that the Adobe is acctively working on it.
I would prefer an clear yes or no or even, we don't know at this time, comme back later.

I see lots of heated debates about future features, and the usual answer from Adobe is to have us read the whitepaper to find out what the current situation is.
With regard to Windows 8 Modern UI, it says (at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplatform/whitepapers/roadmap.html ):
"Adobe and Microsoft are working closely together, and are investing in continuing to deliver Flash Player for Windows 8 and future versions of Windows on both Windows desktop and Modern UI."
    That's as of Jan 30th.
I had got slightly confused by your original question, and was thinking more about Windows mobile. There's no information in the whitepaper about that.

  • Official word on whether 3 TB drives will eventually support Boot Camp would be nice

I was about to buy a new iMac with a 3 TB drive, but then I learned that the 3 TB internal drive is not currently supported by Boot Camp.
It would be nice to get some official word on whether Boot Camp with a 3 TB drive will eventually be supported, or if an iMac with an internal 3 TB drive will be forever locked out of Boot Camp.
Boot Camp cannot install Windows to an external drive (which was a surprise to me, but this is in the official documentation), so there is currently no way to boot into Windows on an iMac with a 3 TB internal drive (although virtualization will still work).
Apparently this is a known issue that has to do with historical UEFI firmware issues and Windows not supporting large drives with MBR (master boot record). Additional discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3827724?start=0&tstart=0
The discussions started in March (2012) and it appears that there is no official indication as to whether this problem is likely to be addressed.

  • Official word from Apple?

Has Apple released an official word on the problems caused by the ipod updater 1-10 and/or itunes 6.0.2?

  • Microsoft word insufficient memory

    Hello all,
I am not sure if this is the right place to post this question. I actually posted it also in another section.
I have been using microsoft excel and word to do some work. More specifically, I have been trying to copy a chart form excel and paste it into a blank word document. However, word keeps giving me the following message: "insufficient memory. save the document".
Of course nothing is pasted. Excel also closes by itself at that point.
    Anyone knows why this is?
The weird thing if that I have copy pasted that same chart from excel to word about 2 weeks ago and it worked fine.
I have 2 gigs of ram and looking at the activity monitor, everything seems fine.
    Can anybody help?
    thanks a lot,
    JM.

  • Regarding No Official Word from Apple on Updates

I have tried several channels to appple to get some word on updates. Since the 15 day return period is almost up and I have not got a reponse - I most likely will return this wonderful device. My reasoning - If Apple lives up to its reputation, within 6 months we will have the 2nd Gen iPhone - most likely with all the bells and whistles that it is lacking today and (hopefully!) larger storage capacity.
I would gladly keep the phone IF Apple would comment one way or another on whether or not future Updates will add additional functionality or just be fixes...
Any thoughts before I return? Any and all comments appreciated!

That's a [insert preferred word for ridiculous] way to buy stuff.
If you like it, keep it.
If you don't like it, return it.
With the exception of living creatures, it's not a good idea to buy and keep something based on what it might become over time. Buy and keep it only if you like it now!
the iPhone is pretty cool, no? Worth the price of admission for me, as is. The gravy: Apple will add features over time through software updates (not just bug fixes). However, don't keep it because of likely future updates, keep it only if you like it now!
Carpe Diem! Live in the present! Soylent green is made out of people. Etc. Etc.

  • What's the official word on "iSIGHT"?  Does it work with msn or no?

I keep reading various reviews...some people say yes..others say no. Does anyone know for a fact if isight works with msn? I've seen the camera and it looks fabulous. And...if it does work, how easy is it to hook it up? Is it simply 'plug and play'?
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply guys. Using iSight without audio or video defeats the purpose.
I'd like to know if i'm msn, can I start a video conferencing session with someone on a PC? or MAC? via Isight? How compatible is this camera? It has the best video i've ever seen on a camera, so how well does it work? With my old logitech camera on PC I never had a problem...but the audio and video were horrible.

  • Official word on PPC support cut off?

What is the date that Apple has set for ceasing development of software for PPC-based macs?

hmmm, I remember with the old .mot processors people still run and use those as mail servers or have them for posterity. I'm working on building another mac which will be a sawtooth in a silverstone temjin 7 case. That's why I asked! I would hate to spend money and have OS X or OS 11 not support ppc.
I suspect that since the supercomputers that were built with 970s will be around for some time It'll be 10 years or so until they phase out PPC support. Pretty clever huh!? I just thought of that.
Especially the Illinois-Urbana teraflopper. Perhaps only OS X server will support PPC in the future in which case I'll need to be runnin X server.
I'll still leave this thread 'unsolved' to garner more ideas.

  • Official word on what is "System Temp" from MSI tech support

I e-mailed MSI asking about what System Temp was actually reading on the motherboard. Here is the reply:
MSI Tech. 02/10/2008 System temp is recording the actual system temp inside your case which the sensor is mounted near the inside of the mb which sensing the system temp.
Okay...so I guess the sensor is mounted near your electrical outlet...

LOL - That is too funny.
but the system temperature sensor is just a diode mounted on the motherboard to measure air temperatures inside the case.  not sure exactly where, but most I've noticed are around the CPU area.

  • K7n420 which memory slots?...

    Hi,
    I am a bit confused.
Till now i knew that after bios v2.2 and above the best combination for Dual DDR operation in the k7n420 (nforce) was 2 sticks of memory put in slots 1&2.
Recently, i have learned from lowrider that he is getting the best results with slots 1&3 occupied!!! ?( ...
Richard, what is going on here?
What is the official word of MSI about this matter?
I am running bios version 2.7 and am utilizing 2X512MB PC3200 memory sticks.
    Thank You,
    Manolis aka Markoul

    Manolis,
With BIOS 2.7 it does not matter which Dimm Slots you use as long as you only use 2 sticks and they are matched. You will get Twinbank.
Several people have been testing their Memory Bandwidth and have found one combination to be a little better than the other 2 combinations. I would run Sandra on your board and see which combination gives you the best results with your RAM.
I would like to see your results too.
