Official word on whether 3 TB drives will eventually support Boot Camp would be nice

I was about to buy a new iMac with a 3 TB drive, but then I learned that the 3 TB internal drive is not currently supported by Boot Camp.
It would be nice to get some official word on whether Boot Camp with a 3 TB drive will eventually be supported, or if an iMac with an internal 3 TB drive will be forever locked out of Boot Camp.
Boot Camp cannot install Windows to an external drive (which was a surprise to me, but this is in the official documentation), so there is currently no way to boot into Windows on an iMac with a 3 TB internal drive (although virtualization will still work).
Apparently this is a known issue that has to do with historical UEFI firmware issues and Windows not supporting large drives with MBR (master boot record). Additional discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3827724?start=0&tstart=0
The discussions started in March (2012) and it appears that there is no official indication as to whether this problem is likely to be addressed.

  • Which of the earliest OS will support Boot Camp

I'm looking to buy a used Mac Pro desktop and I'm wondering what is the earliest version of the operating system and processor that will support boot camp and running Windows on the Mac?

    Any, but I wouldn't touch any pre-2008.
You want 2008 for - support for Windows x64 is better; better choices in graphics cards.
Nothing to do with OS version etc but does hinge on EFI, 2008 brought EFI64 (Unified EFI 2.x).
As for supporting Boot Camp, all Intel Macs do. But not all are 'officially' supported to run 64-bit Windows.
Also, pre-2008 (and this is minor but people make a huge deal out of fear and lack of understanding) that Mac can boot OS X now with Snow Leopard into 64-bit kernel mode (a 'true' 64-bit OS, enforce 64-bit drivers, more on par with Windows 7 64-bit, can address more than 32GB RAM).

  • Can I install Windows on my iMac 27, 3TB Fusion Drive, late-2012 with Boot Camp 5?

Hello. When I first opened the Boot Camp Assistant app, it said it could not work with the 3TB fusion drive. With the updated version of Boot Camp, the option to install Windows appeared. I tried to install Windows 8, but the loading bar stopped moving. I waited for hours, but it still did not move. I decided to quit the app, and re-open it, in order to try again. It crashed, and would not open. So I restarted my system and when I did that I noticed that I had about 1GB or so left of storage. This shocked me, because the disk was just suddenly filled for some reason. In hopes of fixing this I used an app called 'CleanMyMac' to try and recover the disk space. And as I thought the disk space returned to normal. However when I went to Disk Utility and clicked 'repair disk' it said this...
There is only 1 partition, so the Boot Camp process did fail.
I don't know whats wrong with my system though? I would like to install Windows, but I'm worried that I might recieve errors again. I have not got Apple Care, but I'm playing on buying it soon, due to it being almost a year since I bought the system.
Maybe I did something wrong when trying to install Windows with Boot Camp? I don't know, but if possible can someone please tell me if I can install Windows and if something is wrong with my system.
Here is some additional screen shots of the type of system I have.
Thank you for your help with this issue!

Which copy or version of Windows? and how where was it purchased?
my window installed itself perfectly on another computer.
One copy and you want to activate on two computers?
With 16GB, it will try to create 16GB hibernation file, 24GB page file, and need 20-30GB for the OS, plus room for temp, cache, applications, 9GB just temp to install SP1 update(s).
did you create 80GB or larger partition?
also, some macs with ssd + hard drive have issues, and of course you need Windows 7 64-bit home premium (Pro to use more).
OWC has up to 32GB, not cheap.

  • MacBook Pro 17" Will Not Install Boot Camp

Has anyone else found that Boot Camp will NOT install on a 17" MacBook Pro? We were able to partition the drive and install Windows but when we tried to install the Mac Drivers we kept getting the error message "this software will not install on your hardware". This is very frustrating as we bought the 17" specifically to run both Mac OSX and PC Windows. Has anyone got any ideas?

You may need to wait until Apple updates the drivers or you could try extracting them from the package then installing them that way

  • Weird DVD drive issue on Windows Boot Camp on Macbook Pro

Hi, I just installed Windows on my Macbook Pro with Boot Camp. Windows itself works fine, then I tried installing Fallout 3. The installation took a really long time, which I thought was weird. I tried to play the game but it timed out in trying to read the disc. To further test this, I threw in a movie DVD and tried to play it. Windows Media Player said I didn't have a compatible DVD decoder. I tried playing the dvd in Mac OS and it works fine. I've also run the Leopard DVD install for Boot Camp fine. I used the Windows XP video decoder and it has determined that I don't have an MPEG-2 decoder installed. What I'm confused about is that if I manage to get a hold of a decoder, will that affect other processes, such as reading the DVD for video games?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
by design courtesy of Microsoft the Media Player is not capable of playing DVDs unless an appropriate DVD-Decoder is installed.
You can use an alternative media player like VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc
But this should not affect the usage of Windows Games, since usually a Games manufacturer puts all needed software to run his games onto the games CD/DVD, so it has to be something else preventing Fallout 3 from running.
Time-outs when trying to read/check the disc can be sometimes caused by 'dirt' on the disc (fingerprints, scratches, etc.).
    Check for that.
Also make sure to have not installed programs for 'Virtual-Disc-Drives' like Daemon-Tools and/or Disc-Burning software like Nero, since these can also hinder the game from running.
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • Can I make an additional hard drive partition with a boot camp partition on my mac?

    Hi.
I have installed boot camp and now I want another partition for a second install of Mavericks. Can I make another partition for this without messing up Windows 8.1?

Is it dangerous to use an external HD to boot from? The guy at Circuit City told me it was.
One danger of using an external hard drive as a boot drive, is the connection is not as reliable as an internal hard drive. The other is the mistaken assumption that just because it is separate, or not part of the computer, that it is safe. The only true safety comes in numbers. You should always backup your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
2.5" hard drives are a little less reliable than 3.5" hard drives because of the smaller parts involved. Mac Minis have 2.5" hard drives, whereas other desktop Macs have 3.5" hard drives. Whether the reliability of Firewire or USB over SATA or Parallel ATA on 2.5" is enough to offset this difference is hard to say. Having enough backups ensures you don't have to be surprised when you find out in your situation.

  • Can OS X drives be protected from boot camp, and how to backup?

    1. If I create a boot camp partition on my main drive, can I somehow protect my other drives and OS X partitions (and main drive OS X partition) from any possible tampering from a Win7 boot where I'm running software that could be infected or problematic?
    2. How will I back up (and restore)? I've been using Carbon Copy to clone my drives, but unsure if that will also clone a Boot Camp partition?

  • Hard drive missing space after boot camp got stocked on "Creating Partition"

Hi guys, last night I was trying to install windows 7 in my computer for some gaming, the process with boot camp went well until it said "Creating Partition" there it got stocked for a good 2 hours, because of this I did a bit of research on what could happen if I would force quit it, I read that it might happen that if I restart the partition would be there or just nothing would have change but in my case none of those happened, my hard drive is keeping that space in blank without letting me use it, before trying boot camp I had 240 GB of free space and now after restart it I have 90 gb of free space, yes I tried to make the partition of 150 GB, so what should I do to repair this?, I verified the permissions on Disk Utility and I just got one weird message:
Warnin SUID file "Library/CoreS" has been modified and will not be repaired
But when I try to verify/repair I get this:
    or this:

Reboot to your recovery partition and run disk utility from there, you can not repair the disk you are booted from.

  • What to Backup & what will happen to Boot Camp before I Upgrade??

    Hi guys,
I am going to buy the $29 Snow Leopard Upgrade for my MacBook Pro 13" once it is available which is soon
My MBP is 2-3 weeks old so i don't need a CLEAN install (Wipe and install) so an Upgrade will do
but what shall i backup else than my Music, Documents & Pictures??? do I need to backup any other folders??? (Applications, Library, System...etc) or everything will stay as it is?? i am new to the Mac and specially to just an Upgrade!!
and one more question... I have a Boot Camp partition as well, will the upgrade keep it or will it affect the partition???
Thank you so much and enjoy your Snow Leopard
    Sul

An external disk, at least as large as your internal drive, is your best friend when dealing with updates of any sort on a Mac. Just backup to that disk, and you can stop worrying about what happens. I like SuperDuper for this, others like CarbonCopyCloner. For my purposes, TIme Machine won't do, as I want a bootable backup.
If anything bad happens you can either boot from the external to fix things up, or restore the external to your internal disk, and be right back where you started. Think of it as a safety net.
I also back up important data from my laptop to my desktop, as well as to DVD. Probably unnecessary, but it gives me peace of mind.
Went for a straight "upgrade" this afternoon. So far so good. Not noticing any odd hardware behaviour (yet). If I do, I'll wipe and reinstall "clean", then use Migration Assistant to pull my home directory and certain applications over. Good thing it's Friday, and the whole weekend is ahead to play, eh? =)

  • DVD Drive disappeared after installing Boot Camp on Windows 8

I am running Mountain Lion and I bootcamped Windows 8... this is a fresh install.
    1. I installed Windows 8 and the DVD is still working
    2. I installed Bootcamp software via DVD and was asked to reboot
    3. I reboot my iMac
    4. Now, my friggin DVD doesnt work anymore...
    5. I look at My Computer and it's gone.
    6. I look at the device manager and it's not there
    7. I showed hidden devices and the hl-dt-st dvdrw ga32 is there (disabled of course)
    8. i am writing to apple community after a night of searching for a solution in vain.
please help me. i really need my DVD drive
    thanks in advance

    thanks for the response
    1. Yeah I thought that's a mandatory thing because i need to be able to control the brightness with my keyboard, updated graphics card, boot camp control panel, etc
    2. No there's no enable for this because Windows 8 recognizes it as a "disconnected device" and asks me to reconnect the dvd drive to the machine (which it obviously already is).
    3. Ive tried those before, also even editing the registry but it didnt work.
It's weird because it never happened before on Snow Leopard » Lion bootcamp driver updates. Just in Mountain Lion

Windows (explorer) in Boot Camp does not recognize any usb ports/drives on my new iMAC (mountain Lion).  Got the MAC 6 days ago - installed a new windows 7 package using boot camp with the (optional) usb superdrive drive.  I have reinstalled (repaired) the windows support software - no change.  BTW, after installing windows 7 I downloaded all updates, 140+, my windows, os X, and boot camp are up to date.  Any suggestions?  Thanks........jam

Did you download and install teh Windows support software which includes all the necessary Windows drivers for your computer?

  • Mouse issues at Hard Drive selection screen in Boot Camp

    Hello,
I have been searching for awhile and cannot find any information regarding this. I have a Razer Deathadder 3500 series mouse and when I go into the Boot Camp HD selection screen my mouse movements are inverted. Up is down and down is up. I am not sure why this is or how to fix it. Does anyone know?
    Thanks,
    Brad

    Hi all,
in another thread a user had problems with a non-Razer mouse and the selection screen.
Problem, of any, is that at the time of the selection screen, no additional mouse driver is loaded yet, but rather a seemingly 'unified' one.
While maybe a SMC reset might be helpful, I suggested to simply use the cursor-keys for selection and then the Enter key.
At least that works for me.
    Happy computing
    Stefan

  • HT4718 I have bought a used mac air 2  which is now running windows .Who ever installed it has given all of the drive capacity over to boot camp.I now want to restore lio but want to know if there isa way of keeping windows as a dual boot .

Hi. i have bought a two month old Mac air book 11.6 with 64 gb ssd .The previous owner installed windows and I want to reinstall Lion.Is there a way to do this and keep windows as a dual boot system. If so what size partition is best for windows..I am new to apples having always had PC,s .When the previos owner istalled windows he made the whole drive something called bootcamp.Help!! Roy

Before you do anything else, I would make a copy of the Windows system on to an external hard disk.  Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) will help you do this.
Bootcamp partition needs to be set up using Bootcamp Assistant, from within Lion. There are sometimes problems using third party disk management apps, and the partition order is important too.
I suspect the previous owner should have re-installed his original OS before giving you the computer. Are you saying that there is no Lion on it at present? If so, you will need to get it, or if it was Snow Leopard, the installation disk, from him.   In the latter case, with SL 10.6.8 installed, you can then access MAS to buy Lion.
Once you have Lion installed you can setup Bootcamp and restore your Windows system to it, from the external disk.
