Offline Browsing

Why does Safari not support offline browsing?
Safari is a great app but it misses this vital feature

Oh, the cache. That seems not to work in the same way. I either leave the pages/tabs in the browser windows (I never shut down, only use sleep), or I save the pages as web archives.
What I was referring to in my earlier message was access to files (as per an offline website). Have you thought of something like Sitesucker (reinventing the wheel perhaps when all you need is another browser if you intend to work offline)?

  • How do I execute "wget" to archive whole sites for offline browsing

    I ran across this post:
<If you find some good online sites, you can use "wget" to archive the whole site to your machine for offline browsing. I use the following:
    <alias getsite='wget -k -r -N --random-wait -np'
I would like to try this offline browsing suggestionbut I don't understand how to implement this.
I posted this to the orriginal sender but haven't gotten a response, being impatient...Could anyone give me a step by step idiot proof intructional version of this?

That sure sounds like my post. I was going to respond with my alias:
    alias getsite='wget -k -r -N --random-wait -np'
Which looks a whole lot like yours.
Yes. This is definitely in the Terminal. It is located in /Applications/Utilities.
The alias command above is a line in my .bash_profile file in my home directory. It cans all sorts of similar commands to do cool stuff in the terminal. Once you add the above line to your .bash_profile file, open a new terminal window, and type getsite http://www.apple.com and sit back and let it work.
The other day I was travelling and had a very slow connection. I had to adjust the command like this ' getsite --reject=bz2,mov,gz,dmg,swf http://osxbook.com/book/bonus/' so that is wouldn't try to download huge files.
You don't want to use curl. The curl program is more low-level and is more suited to software development and testing. If you are just starting to learn the terminal, use wget for now. Later, when you learn about standard output redirection, you can try curl.
I always do 'cd ~/Sites' before using wget. Then, I can just go to 'http://mymachine.local/~jdaniel/www.apple.com' to view archived sites.

  • Offline browser for Mac

Does anybody know a better offline browser for Mac than this? I haven't tried it yet.
    http://www.bestshareware.net/download/webcopier-for-mac.htm

Thanks for the browser info it seems like it might work well but having a few problems. When I go to websites it will tell me to enable javascript, I can't locate it haven't been on a Mac in years. I tryed to unblock cookies and also unblock images but those settings will revert back to, blocking them. I tryed going to software update, but that came back with, update did not find new or updated versions of your software. I thought maybe javascript needed to be updated? And OS 9 is more than likely no longer supported? So if you have anything I could try would appreciate it.
Also if I may add to this post. This G3 blue and white computer came with Mac OS X. But I couldn't reset the login password and didn't have the original OS CD, so couldn't get into it. The computer probably hadn't been run in years. I had to replace the pram battery, date was 2003. And had to replace the ram.To get it to start.
Then I installed Mac OS 9.0.4, because I couldn't get into OS X without the password.
I had saved the entire software pack from a iMac DV I bought in 2000. What I've read is, that OS disk would be specific for that iMac only, it installed on the G3.
I don't think the computer hard drive reformatted with the install of OS 9? The OS only took about 15 minutes to install. I didn't see a reformat window come up where I could make a choice.
My question is, would OS X still be on this G3? Or was it removed with the OS 9 install? I don't know how to locate it if it still is?

  • Offline Browsing - Safari insists on re-loading even when there is Internet

Safari insists on re-loading web pages when offline. I have cleared the cache, etc. and otherwise reset Safari, and it seems to work for a short while, but eventually Safari is back to its old tricks every time I switch to another web page or application, and insists on re-loading a page or pages that were already loaded.
This is most frustrating. It happens whether or not I have an Internet connection or not. Case in point, I had loaded a number of web pages of newsgroups and articles I wanted to read on the plane, as well as my e-mail. Got on the plane, played a game, checked my mail, replied to some to be sent when I was again connected to the Internet, then switched over to read the webpages I had cached, and BOOM, every single one of them reloaded to blank pages indicating that the Internet was not available. pressing the back button just resulted in the same message.
What is up with this? Is there a way to disable Safari from forced re-loads? Remember the good old days of the save for off-line browsing button?
Or is this just poor memory management? Does the iPad not have enough RAM to support its abilities? Are the multi-tasked apps loaded into RAM the culprit? If so should I force-quit all loaded apps before I start caching web pages? And if thats the case is there a way to force-quit all open apps rather than go through each one?

Yikes!! It's Steve Jobs' 128K Macintosh all over again!! At least there are no endless floppy swaps!
Thanks, I figured that was the case. So basically, it's not all the web pages I have open, but all the RAM being tied up in something else. I suspect multi-tasking is a bad thing for off-line browsing. I will try quitting everything I am not using which is open in the background ... And here's where Apple should have included an all quit option. However, I think the bigger problem with Safari, is that it does not store the cached pages on the flash drive, but only in RAM, so unlike an e-mail draft, which will be there even if Mail crashes, the cache disappears as soon as the RAM runs low. This is really unacceptable. If this is how it's going to work, they need to bring back the "save for offline reading" option.
For now, I'm starting to think there should be a memory monitor app, so that users can address these kinds of issues.

  • Offline Browsing In Safari: Is It Possible?

I know it can't be done with just safari, but has anyone found a way (or app) that allows you to save webpages for offline viewing?
    I found this http://itouchtips.wordpress.com/2007...line-browsing/
...but it won't save the images.

The upload form should display the fake path, but upload the right file anyway. If it doesn't, the problem has to be fixed on the server.

  • Offline browsing and web site capture

I'm trying to find intuitive software that will allow me to save to file a web site for future while online or if the host pulls the site and it's materials from the web. I want to use the sites for educational purposes and can't count on having students return to use the site.
I have tried some software and it's waaay to complicated. I just want to save it, store it, transfer to a student, and retrieve it as simply as open apple "S" and open apple "O".

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but I think I may have some idea. One thing you can do in Safari is File>Save As—and then you can save the web page on your computer. Unfortunately I don't believe links work from the saved versions.
    Hope this helps.

  • Map cache for decreased bandwidth or offline browsing?

Is there any way to force a LARGE (0.5-3gb) cache of maps on my iPhone 3gs? I have a limited 3g plan, and find than when I use the maps application for an extended period of time, my bandwidth usage accumulates very quickly. I have around 20% of my 32gb storage empty, and would love to somehow cache a large portion of my semi-local maps to help reduce my bandwidth usage.

  • Viewing Threads Offline - Needs To Be Sorted

When browsing offline, the threads seem to be sorted by "start" date and not last post. We have at the moment for example, two very "hot" threads in the T-Series message board; T61p Graphic and T61 With Advanced Dock. If threads were, for offline browsing, set to last post at the top, a new visitor would see that there is more happening here, than they would at the moment, before having to click to the next page. These threads would naturally remain near the top, or at least on the first page. At some point in time they will of course disappear down the list into the cellar as they are no longer "interesting".
Seeing "hot" threads, on the first page of a message board, would make a better impression by a first visit.
just another 0.02 Euro cent worth.

    Hi Ganesh,
Since it is that particular person requirement, ask him to swap delivery date with material group in the report and he can see the result as per need.
I have checked by using rt click  on material group  then Sort by  ascending  / descending  but  didnot  work .
This will work based on the preceding values. If you want to maintain results based on material group, place it in first place of rows. Its common behavior of Bex.

  • View on ipad a website offline

    Hi all
I have a website that for various reasons, i have to carry with me as catalog.
Is there any app that would read the site and open the right page when i click on a link? Since the site is offline and i have all the links to other pages as local; i guess that it won't work.
I cannot put the site online, otherwise the problem would be solved; and each page has many sub pages (is a catalog after all, with pictures and data for each item, divided in many categories and sections), so i cannot convert them in pdf files or other formats since they are interconnected (to make an example; a car door requires specific washer and screws, that requires particular tools, and so on; so each part needs to display other parts correlated).
Is there any app that let me load a folder full of html pages and pictures, and read it as i would do on my computer? (start from index.html and from there read the local links to open pages and show images).
I have goodreader, but it works with a singular page

I understand that is easier to post the site on the web, but i have 2 main reasons:
    1) the content of the site cannot be seen other than to people that sign the NDA; so i cannot post anything online, even if i protect the pages with login access (this will be resolved once that the products goes public)
    2) in many places where i go, there is no internet connection available (and i don't want a 3g ipad because i gotta pay subscription to browse...and 3g is also not available everywhere); I could bring the laptop with me but it is heavy and compared to the ipad is a mammoth
I've found a software that can download pages and link them locally, but you have to download the site, and cannot simply copy the folder on the ipad; so i am back to square 1
BTW i do not need a site sucker or offline browser, but a software that can store a site on the ipad (without being a webserver, i don't need to serve content to anyone other than the ipad itself), and can let me to browse it, without going one page at time.
The biggest problem of the software that you suggested is that they do not save the links on a page, so if i have page A that has a link to products on page B and prices on page C, i cannot click on the link on page A, but gotta manually load page B and C....this nullify the nature itself of the HTML since is not a hypertext anymore but just a bunch of pages, like in a regular word or pdf document.
now even a 386 running windows 3.11 can display local websites; and i don't get it how is possible that a more advanced device like the ipad, with a powerful cpu cannot manage HTML hyperlinks...the only answer that came up i my mind is that nobody needs this feature so nobody wrote an api to support local browsing.
anyway my hunt continue....hopefully i do not have to write by myself an app that does what i need; even because to use it i have no other option than putting it on the store (99 bucks); and this is hilarious...to ahve to pay to run my own software on my own device

  • Pages don't appear in HTML view

    Hello,
I have a fairly large WebHelp project that I am trying to
convert to HTML help. I have made HTML Help the Primary Layout for
this project. When I generate it and preview the result, the
frameset appears, but the actual topic pages do not - the
    following, standard error page appears:
    Action
    canceled
Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you
requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable.
    Please try the following:
Click the Refresh button, or try again later.
If you have visited this page previously and you want to view
what has been stored on your computer, click File, and then click
    Work Offline.
For information about offline browsing with Internet
Explorer, click the Help menu, and then click Contents and Index.
    Internet Explorer
Why would this happen? Is there a step I am missing?
    Thanks in advance.
    Todd

    Hi again
I think you are misunderstanding .CHM output.
I say this because of your statement:
Part of the attraction for HTML (CHM) for our development team
is that only two files are involved (CHM, TOC).
You need to undertstand that only a single file is normally
involved that you would need to ship. Just the .CHM. Like computers
with "Intel Inside", the .CHM has the "TOC Inside". The TOC is part
of the .CHM file itself. I'm guessing here that perhaps you are
confusing .CHM output with it's elder cousin, .HLP output where you
also had the TOC external to the .HLP file. (the .CNT file)
So yes, your problems are stemming from the fact you are
trying to view the .CHM while it is in a network location. If your
end users will be copying the .CHM locally (or if an installation
application is placing them there for the user) you really have no
concerns and all should be fine.
    Cheers... Rick

  • How do I get rid of the tab under my row of tabs, saying "Retrieving buttons from My Web Search"?

    Hi,
Under my row of tabs, there is a row that says "Retrieving buttons from My Web Search".
This has been appearing for the past 3 days and I have no idea how to remove it. It is obviously failing to retrieve any 'buttons' from my 'web search'. On the far right side of the row, there is a button which has the options of:
    *My Web Search Version
    *Enable Offline Browsing
    *Colour Buttons Always
Whichever one I click, it stays the same.
Any help would be muchly appreciated.
    Thanks

If the folder is deleteable, then tap on the Edit button at the top of the list of mail folders, tap on the folder that you want to delete, and on the next screen tap the Delete Mailbox button - that should move the folder to the Trash folder.
    Edit : spelling auto-correct corrected

  • How to, login into the yahoo groups/clubs,....

    Hi,
I would like to write a offline browser utility to follow up my yahoo groups and clubs.
I took several attempts before I wrote this mail and I discoverd that it are the redirections and cookies that cause the problems.
Does anyone know a class capable to download a URL dispite of cookies and redirections?
I tried with the swing-brower that comes as example with the JDK but he has also problems with the cookies and redirections.

    Hi,
I found the sollution to my problem with the help of the sniplet of madhu77 "Dealing with cookies" from nov 8, 2000 10:05 AM
I worte a class to login to the yahoo clubs, I just added the hidden parameters from HTML form, and two methods, one to retrieve the login page and a second to get a HashSet of String(URLs) to the clubs your a member of. The constructor accepts login name and password as parameters.

  • Embedding a Flash .exe

I need to load a Flash executable into my browser application. It has a couple of transparent masks. Anyway, is there a way to both embed it and collect data from it.

I have a question about that too, only it isn't about swf executables only. The only way I can get, like a offline browser, to be able to access the internet is through something that already has access through the fire wall. If I wanted, say teleport pro to be in the applet, is there anything I could do?
