Offline clips disappear from sequence

I have two computers that I need to use to edit one project (two locations). I move the Premiere Pro CC project files between them but the source files exist in both locations.
I understand that this might cause clips to go offline because of the differing file paths. However, when I open the sequence in the second computer, the video clips that I edited to the sequence from the first computer do not appear at all - it's just blank. I expect to see a shell clip with a "media offline" message so that I can reconnect them to the new path, but I have no way of doing it because the clips are simply not there.   Yes, I'm comparing this to Final Cut Pro which would have the edits (clips) in place even if the media needs to be relocated. At least that way I know what is there and have a way of reconnecting those clips.
Please help! Thanks.
I'm using Premiere CC on a mac.

can anyone help?

  • Source clip disappeared from hard drive!

    Hi everybody,
Very strange and worrying problem here.
I was editing on a college computer in FCE (Final Cut Express), trying to put some end credits on a short film. I created a rough edit of my end sequence visuals, and copied it to a new Sequence, entitled 'end titles', which I exported to LiveType (File > Export > Export to LiveType). When I imported it into LiveType, I remembered that it didn't import audio to LiveType (annoyingly - does anyone know why this is?), so I decided to go back and put markers on the video where key points occured in the soundtrack, so I could synchronise my titles with the music in LiveType.
In FCE, I put my markers on the video, in the new Sequence, and re-exported it to LiveType, with the same name, replacing the old file without the markers. LiveType duly removed the old background track from its timeline, but when I went to File > Place Background Movie, the new file wasn't there.
I went back to FCE, which had reported a general error, and when I clicked OK it told me that some media had gone missing - one of the files used by my end sequence, from which I had made a freeze frame. I clicked 'Reconnect', went to the project folder in the Capture Scratch folder - but the file wasn't there. FCE was now displaying the red 'Media Offline' message wherever that clip appeared. I was befuddled. In the Finder I looked in the Capture Scratch > project folder, but it was nowhere to be found. All the others were there, in numerical order, but that particular clip, number 18, was gone. I searched for it in Spotlight, with a variety of similar terms derived from its name. There was no mention of it anywhere.
Does anyone know how or why a media clip could simply disappear completely from a hard drive - or if there is any hope of getting my media back, short of re-capturing it??
    Thanks much guys,
    ~Bacchus

    Hi(Bonjour)!
As stated earlier livetype doesn'support audio. So before exporting your movie from sequence, you can put some color frame where your want to cue livetype elements. Those cues will be usefull when you will edit your livetype project but you will have to set the visibility of background to off before the saving or the "cue" version will appears in your project.
To export a movie to livetype, I put a In and OUT points to set the movie duration/content in timeline and save a quicktime movie "self contained".
I import this movie into livetype project, doing the titling and save the project.
I import the livetype project itself into FCE (not the rendered movie) and the rendering occur in FCE HD itself. You can use a "replace edit" to replace the original clip in timeline with the livetype project (who acts as a clip). You can add sound element in FCE HD timeline to fit your titling project.
Livetype is included with FCS 2 by I doupt that many editors use it as MOTION application is included and supports many more features like sound.
The "send to..." function if Final Cut Pro 6 work as intended.

  • Emergency - Clip Disappeared from Drive

I've just had a clip go offline in a project and it seems to have disappeared from the drive. I'm using a G5 2.5Ghz running OSX 10.4.8 and FCStudio 5.1.2. I have FCP on the A drive and use the internal B drive as a capture scratch. Everything was fine on this project until I closed it out because FCP wasn't recognizing the external monitor. When I re-started, the clip was offline. I tried to reconnect, but it was no longer in the Capture Scratch. I checked the trash (nope), used Disk Utility to verify permissions on A and verify B (no problems found), checked the other machines on our network and -- nothing. It's disappeared. I had to send the tapes back to Tokyo on this project, so I have no way to replace this. Any ideas on what happened and - more to the point - how to find this missing clip?
    G5 2.5 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I realize that you did not put the file in the trash, but I recently came across a GREAT program for data recovery:
    File Salvage
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
Great for recovering trash that has been emptied.

  • My clips went offline and disappeared from capture scratch folder

I was editing a project in final cut express, a movie of my newborn daughter, and was almost finished. The clips had bin logged and transferred into my sequence. Next morning started the nightmare; almost all the clips had vanished...
The timeline was full of red boxes that said media was offline. Clips i had rendered were still ok, and clips i had captured from another camera were playing.
Reconnecting the media did not work. The strange thing is that all the clips i had not used in timeline, but was located in the bin, are still ok. They are still in the capture scratch folder. Its just the clips i had used in timeline that are gone. I have searched my mac for the lost clips, but can`t find them. The clips are deleted from my camera, and i have no backup. Stupid me...
Has someone experienced something similar, or know what to to? Are my clips gone forever?
I have also tried to find i program that can recover deleted files from videocamera (avchd), but the programs i tried so far can just find jpeg files, no video...
    Hoping for an answer
    -Ola

    Hi Ian,
The directory is part of each hard drive's 'soft structure.' It is created when you partition & format the drive; and then constantly maintained & updated by the OS and drive controller as you use the drive. Just connecting an external HD to another Mac won't resurrect the directory.
DiskWarrior and similar utilities can help recover corrupted directories & lost files, but their success depends on the kind & degree of corruption. Most times when something happens to the directory, the files are still intact on the drive - that's why they can be recovered. However the likelihood of recovery decreases quickly if you continue to write to the drive after corruption occurs. That's why it's important to stop saving, copying or moving folders or files on the drive as soon as you notice a problem.

  • Clips disappear from Events when moving external drive to my new Laptop

Here is a weird one: I have a large external drive (software RAID) that I have all my footage on, and I am using iMovie to organize it; using a 2006 iMac 24" running Leopard 10.5.7, iMovie '09 8.0.3 (802) (the latest) - all is going reasonably well, although its getting a little slow.
But, when I move this drive onto my new Mid '09 Macbook Pro, also running 10.5.7, iMovie 8.0.3, the recently re-arranged events show up with no clips in them. Other events, that have not been recently changed, show up okay. Projects seem unaffected.
Then, if I take the drive back to the iMac, it's all normal again. Sometimes iMovie won't start at all on the MacBook.

    Bonsai wrote:
I also notice that I get the 'Choosing Full on this computer may result in degraded video playback' warning, despite being 2.8GHz vs. the 2.16 of the iMac, 512Mb video card (enabled) etc. etc.
Yes-that was a standard statement in all imovie users. However, in the latest version of imovie there isn't full vs large. There is original vs large. You should check you imovie updates.
I don't know if thats the culprit or not, the iMac does not have that warning. Does anyone else have a MacBook Pro with that warning?
no that is not the culprit

  • The thumbnail images have disappeared from one of my sequences

I have 3 sequences open in the timeline and the thumbnail images have disappeared from the clips in one of them. It's very frustrating to work without them, how do I get them back?

Thanks so much! That actually wasn't it though... The thumbnail display was already set to 'name plus thumbnail' but 'track size' was set to 'custom'. Once I changed 'track size' to 'small' (which is what my other sequences which were displaying thumbnails were set to) the thumbnails reappeared. Yipee!!!!

  • My keywords and compound clips have disappeared from Event

    Hi.
After a few weeks of working off of a portable hard drive, recently I hooked my laptop back up to my large external drive, where most of my video resides, and found that all my keywords and compound clips have disappeared from their Event. (I have only one event on that drive.)
This is DISTRESSING. I had originally imported a huge amount of clips into FCP X and spent days entering keywords. I also took a lot of time importing sequences from FCP 7 into FCP X as compound clips. These were important building blocks. Now they are all gone.
Looking on the web I've only found one instance of anyone saying this had happened to them, and it was because he had tried to duplicate his currentevent file in the file. I did no such thing. Really I have no idea what I could have done differently to make this happen. All I did was not use my primary hard drive for a few weeks.
Is there ANY way to retrieve all those keywords and compound clips? This is a NASTY surprise, a real blow. I walked around all night feeling depressed at all the lost work.
The other guy who had this problem said that he then used FCP 7 for a day -- and when he reopened FCP X all his keywords and clips had returned. He didn't know why. I tried leaving FCP 7 open all day today in case that would help, but there's no change this evening. Still all gone.
I then tried moving the currentevent file onto my desktop with a slightly changed name (--currentevent), renaming the file in the "backup" folder as currentevent, and opening with that. No better.

You need to give a lot more information about the media specifications and the project properties you're using in the different projects.

  • How can I reinsert the deleted audio from clips in my sequence?

How can I reinsert the deleted audio from clips in my sequence?

I can tell you a work around to get you going in the meantime, just may be time consuming if you have a lot of clips in the timeline.
double click a clip missing audio
press the go to in point and copy the timecode to notepad
press the go to end point and copy timecode
right click clip, and reveal in project
double click the original in project
paste in timecode and set in & out points again
    drag audio
As I said not the quickest way, but it works, and won't actually take as long as you'd think, 30 secs or so per clip, i just hope you don't have over 100 clips without audio

  • How do I change the clips in my Sequence from DV to 1280x720 422?

Hello newbie-ish question here --Is there a way I can get a sequence back to the original footage's 1280x720 Apple 422 format from 720x480 DV? I thought it was set correctly but the default is DV and that's the way the sequence got edited. How can i get it back to 1280x720 Apple Pro Res 422? Thanks

    HI -
    Create a new sequence.
Drag any one of your 1280x720 camera source clips to it. FCP will ask if you want to change the sequence settings to match the source. Say yes. Click on the clip that you just placed on the timeline and delete it. You now have an empty sequence with the proper sequence settings.
Now return to your DV timeline, and clicking anywhere on it, type Command -A to select all the clips.
Type Command - C to copy them.
Now go to the new (empty) sequence you created with the proper settings, click anywhere in it and type Command - V to paste the clips from the DV sequence.
If the video clips to not fill the canvas of your new sequence, then select all the video clips and Control - Click on any one of the selected clips. From the drop down menu choose Remove Attributes and from the Remove Attributes window that open, select the check boxes for Basic Motion and Distort and click OK.
Post back if this does not work for you.

  • Finished clips were dropped from sequence

    Hi there...
I have been working on a project in Final Cut Express. I always Render All and Save before I close out. The last time I opened the application, some finished clips I had in my sequence were dropped. I did a search for them and found them listed in my Render Files folder as
    Sequence 1 - FIN - 00000010
    Sequence 1 - FIN - 00000011
    Sequence 1 - FIN - 00000012
    ...and so on.
    So, two questions -
    (1) Why were these finished clips dropped from the sequence?
    (2) How do I bring them back into the sequence?
Thank you so much for your feedback!
    ...Rae

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    Simply render your sequence again.
Sometimes, render files can disapears without explaination (FCE 2 was prone to this behavior).

  • Duplicate timecodes from sequence onto new clip

I have the same long interview footage in HDV and Cineform (initially I was trying to edit the Cineform in CS3, now using CS5.5)
I have made lots of edits, transitions etc with the Cineform footage that I am happy with but I have realised that my sequence settings are not correct and the footage appears to look better when encoded direct from the original HDV
Is there a way I can keep the current edits but apply them to the HDV clip rather than the Cineform one in a new sequence: i.e. use the timecodes from the cineform footage to edit the HDV footage automatically (clearly the timecodes for the two versions are identical)
    Thanks for the help
    Nick

There is no easy, automated way to do this--essentially, you're talking about a roundabout proxy workflow. Pr isn't the best when it comes to such workflows, unfortunately.
The simple but tedious way is to drag one of the HDV master clips to the matching Cineform clip in a sequence, hold down Alt+Shift, and drop it on the original Cineform clip; this will do a match frame (using timecode) replace edit.
You could also replace each Cineform master clip in the bin (one by one, unfortunately); just right-click a Cineform clip in the bin, select Replace Footage, and navigate to the matching HDV clip. This shouldn't be too bad if your Cineform clips all used the original HDV file names; the extensions will, of course, be different.
You could also hack the project file XML to replace all the Cineform instances--but that can be a bit hairy (though a lot faster). That involves your HDV and Cineform files having the same file names, though. If they don't, either of the above are your best course of action.

  • Behaviors disappeared from the Inspector

Motion 4 on a MacBookPro 2.66. Working a little more than an hour on titles. Set up four different Groups, each with 4 to 5 TEXT boxes each. Went back through to Animate the text, got the first box selected, go to the Library in the Inspector and I have (0) Behaviors. 5 mins earlier I had 230. Some folders show up partially filled, some are fine, some are as empty as Behaviors. Under the Behaviors Icon above the Canvas I have all the Behaviors but being kind of new to Motion I would like to see an example in the Inspector- beside they're supposed to be in the Inspector.
Saved, Quit. Ran DIsk Utility and Repaired a page full of stuff, all in the Systems Library- Motion was the only thing I ran this morning, reopened Motion and the Behaviors where back in the Inspector.
Didn't loose anything but it's still a little concerning.
Had Motion running by it self because I can't seem to get the hang of swapping clips or Sequences back and forth between FCP successfully- not what this post is about, I'll get that figured out but am I doing something wrong to loose the Behaviors?
I had 2 Backgrounds with Blurs on, not on top of each other, and the rest was just Text. One Text box had one word that was Live Fonts but the rest was just text I intend to Animate with Behaviors.
Is this just the way it is with laptops?
Got 500 Gigs in the MacBook, all of Motion is in it. I keep the Transferred or Captured source material for FCP on external disks but since I'm really learning Motion it's nice to have it all with me.
Anybody have any ideas why folders would disappear from the Inspector?

    None.
    Good news: it's not typical.

  • Button Disappears from Stage

I’ve created a two buttons in a frame labeled
“child.” The instance name for one button is
    “orientationBtn” and the other is
“stepBtn.” When you click on the orientationBtn you are
taken to a frame labeled “orientation” which holds a
puzzle written in AS3. When the puzzle is complete, two more
buttons appear. One button (playAgain) will reset the puzzle to
play again. The other button (noThanks) is a
gotoAndPlay(“child”) so the user can return to the
    menu.
If the user presses a certain sequence of buttons –
orientationBtn, completes the puzzle, noThanks they are taken back
to the menu. If s/he then chooses to complete the puzzle again and
presses the same sequence of buttons, the following error message
appears after pressing the noThanks button - TypeError: Error
#1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object
reference. Interestingly, the null object is that my
“stepBtn” has disappeared from the stage. Any ideas why
    this would happen?

Of course. I should have done that initially. Sorry! You will

  • Need to put HD clips in SD sequence without aliasing, any way to do this without converting clips to ProRes?

Editing a 1080p project shot with Canon 5DMkii.
Have a 1080p H.264 sequence that I planned to change to ProRes when all finished, before exporting to make a DVD.
Many shots have problems, and the only way to get around them is to reframe.
I figured, no problem, DVD video is SD, so I have 600+ pixels of frame-height to play with.
Now I have a rough cut and I have put some clips into a sequence preset to 720x405.
Unfortunately, when the original clips are anything other than 100% of their 1920x1080 size, it’s aliased as heck.
EXCEPT when you convert the original clip to ProRes.
I didn’t convert to ProRes before editing because it quintuples the size (the project has 45GB of footage and my internal 1TB HD has limited space), plus on this project the small difference in final-product quality that converting before editing brings wouldn’t matter.
I really do need to reframe many of the shots, and I wouldn’t terribly terribly mind converting to ProRes now, except that when you do, Compressor adds “ProRes…” to the new clip name, so you couldn’t just reconnect the already-edited sequence with the newly converted clips (or could you)?
    So,
Can the downsizing of HD clips in an SD sequence be done without aliasing?
If not, can a whole sequence (15 minutes) be reconnected to clips to clips that
have the “Apple prores 444 hq” added to their name? (I tried and the converted clip is grayed out, can’t select it)
       3.  If not, can the whole 45GB of footage be converted to ProRes, but keep original names unchanged?
If none of the above is possible, any other solution?
    Thank you very much

That is a non-standard sequence setting. SD in NTSC land isn't 16:9.  It is 4:3 anamorphic.  720x486...anamorphic (squeezed).
Editing H.264 straight from the camera is wrought with errors. Besides the sluggishness of it, the non-RT playback...exporting has all sorts of issues.  Not exporting proper sections of footage, not exporting the full sequence (the tail might get cut off), loss of sync upon export...much more.  All of those issues have been mentioned on various FCP forums.  H.264 is not a codec FCP 7 deals with well at all.
Converting to ProRes before editing is your only way to ensure vary little issues.  And converting to ProRes 422 is recommended.  Not HQ...not 4444.  Your footage will not see any benefit from those formats, even though they sound more impressive. All you will get is larger files.  Heck, since you are going to DVD, ProRes LT would be the optimal choice.  Even if you went to BluRay, ProRes LT would be fine for that format.  H.264 is an 8-bit format...ProRes LT or 422 will get it to 10-bit, and allow for better grading.  But ZERO benefit will be had with HQ or 4444...those are for other uses...with higher end formats.
Not enough space? Get another drive.  Internal SATA, if you have a MacPro...are 2TB for under $150.  You can get an external 2TB for $200-$300.
    3. Yes...use MPEG STREAMCLIP to convert the footage to ProRes.  422 or LT are recommended.  Then you can reconnect, but you will need to make a new sequence that is ProRes...not H.264.
