Offline Files Not Enabling via GPO

Hello,
I have used the Offline Files syncing feature in Windows 7 for quite some time now. We moved to a different model laptop this year (Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga) and the Offline Files feature is not being enabled on it via Group Policy. I can see the GPO is being
applied and the folder redirection in the GPO is working, however, the Offline Files piece is not.
The Offline Files is working on every other model but the Yoga so I am positive it is something in the image itself preventing Offline Files from enabling via GPO. I can manually go in and enable it but doing this for 150 existing users in the time I need
is not feasible.
What could possibly be in the OS (image) preventing this from enabling through Group Policy? I know for a fact this is not a problem with Group Policy itself since it is working on every other model but the Yoga. I even logged into an x230 and Yoga side
by side with the same user account and it worked flawlessly on the x230 but not the Yoga. So I know it is an issue with the Yoga image.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,
Based on your description, we can check if the Offline Files service on the Yoga computers are automatically enabled. If not, we can edit the following registry to enable
the Offline Files.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC
From the list of registry values displayed in the right side pane, change the data in the registry value
Start to 1, and then we need to reboot the computers to activate Offline Files.
To edit the registry for multiple computers, we can utilize Group Policy Preferences Registry extension to do this.
Regarding this point, the following article can be referred to for more information.

  • Windows 8 Folder Redirection/offline files not working

I am trying to deploy 4 brand new HP Laptops running windows 8 Professional into a windows 2008 domain however folder redirection is not working
These users have folder redirection enabled via group policy and this works fine under their old laptops in windows 7
For windows 8 I see an error in the event log :
Error 7023 - The offline files service terminated with the following error : the system cannot find the path specified
I also get this error if I manually try to start the offline files service.
This is happening on all 4 brand new laptops. All latest available updates installed.

The error as you have already observed is a critical error  blocking the service from running. So that must be about the computer software configuration.
You claim brand new, latest updates etc. - however to use i.e. folder redirection, gpo's etc. you're modifying the software configuraton. I.e. not quite brand new or unchanged (except for those may be important changes, guess those machines are indeed brand
new or just bought ... however still in change as any other software managed machines)
For some reason could be corruption of system configuration, but how? Unlike coincidence of 3 of 4 computers failing to start that services? I.e. have you done any changes to offline files etc, scripts or some stuff with gpo's.
Try exploring the Windows log and take a look at the detail for the error events.
Use process monitor from Microsoft to trace what happens when you try to start the Windows service ...
Just tips for determining the bug ...
Out-of-the-box this should not happen ... for folder redirection and offline files ... it's actually the Windows client going to get those files ... so take a look at the client and try to trace the bug.
My best guess is something is changed on the client - and your customized system or software is doing it. Or something wrong with the configuration. I.e. if you have relocated the CSC cache ...
In my experience the best way to debug this problem is to use Process Monitor ... and i.e. come up with a fix based on the observations i.e. if you have relocated the csc cache to some place where it is actually not available or incorrectly configured
(i.e. take a look at the Result column and looked for failed operations in context with CSC cache operations)
If you don't know how to do this - don't relocate the CSC cache ... (i.e. if you did this to conserve space on i.e. your SDD's with i.e. smaller capacity than legacy-HD). The real problem is the Folder Redirection Client on the Window Client going to
pin the entire folder hierarchy of the users workspace, i.e. documents. Either move files out of that area or use group policy to disable pining entire user "storage area". Microsoft should make the Folder Redirection Client more flexiable, i.e. add option
to exclude part of folder hierarchy. But you can do this by using gpo to disable folder redirection auto-cache of all files - and then instead have users explicitly pin their mobile folders. However for some folders like favorites, desktop and so on you can
actually use batch and wmic to set pin of some folders containing usually less data using a startup script and gpo. That Works ... and simulates i.e. excluding the stored data in user libraries like documents, videos, music ...
... anyway added this based on a "suspension" on what you are really trying to obtain ... but the solution is not to move the CSC cache to aqquire more space, i.e. a user can put 1 TB in their videos ... the solution is to program the Folder Redirection
Client differently ... untill Microsoft add that functionality.

  • T420s Windows 7 Offline Files Not Working

We have a new T420s laptop and the Offline Files feature in Windows 7 does not work consistently on this machine.  The issue was specific to this laptop, we could run offline files on the same users on other computers which ruled out network permissions.
The Offline Files service would continually be turned off after a re-start and after hours of fighting with this machine we found that the Lenovo HyperW7 service was the cause of the problem.  This service can be disabled using MSConfig or remove the Rapidboot software which initiates this service.
Lenovo technical support was absolutely useless in resolving this issue, not sure if we will be buying Lenovo in the future.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

We were able to confirm a bug within RapidBoot that affects even the latest version of the software, 1.11
At this point I would recommend to uninstall RapidBoot from all your Lenovo systems that need to use offline files, because there is not currently any solution to this problem.
Very sorry for the inconvenience caused by RapidBoot.

  • Offline Files, not available offline after server 2008 R2 upgrade

I have a few users on Windows 7 Enterprise. They have their H (home) drive "Always Available Offline". If we check the offline files folder they show up. If the user shuts down, takes their laptop off the network, starts up and logs back in, the
offline copy of the H: does not show up like it did before.   If I unc into the path where the H is, I can get to it or if I run the log in script. (note: only the files that had Always available offline show up). This tells me the files sync and wre
copied to the client machine, it's just not "mapping" the offline drive for the user like it use to.
I've gone as far as to completely wipe one of the laptops (with users permission of course) and re-install everything, all updates and it still happens. I am begging to think it is something with the servers but the Sys admin doesn't think so. I am at loss
    of what to try next.

Glad to hear it is solved, thanks for sharing your solution and experience here.

Windows Setup does not run from the Y: but from X: ramdisk in WinPE. If you keep the answer file on a network share, you need to use the /unattend switch to point to it. Network shares are not in the default search path that Setup uses:

  • Tif files not opening via Acrobat Javascript openDoc() method

    Hi,
I am trying to open a .tif file via Acrobat Javascript using the following code snippet which I have in config.js file in Acrobat Javascripts folder:
    trustedOpenDoc = app.trustedFunction( function (File)
    app.beginPriv();
      var doc = app.openDoc({
          cPath: File,
          bUseConv: true
    app.endPriv();
    return doc;
Problem is that openDoc opens up all other images but it has problem with multi page tif files, I mean it does not open some tif files. I have directly tried to open files in Acrobat professional 8/9 from File --> Open but got same result.
The same happens also with some heavy (above 1 MB) .bmp files but with .bmp files this behaviour is not so frequent, on the other hand .tif files always give the same result.
Any PDF Gladiator who can save my project deadline!
Look please; I have this problem for the last 12 days and miserably my project is getting late becoz of this.
Thanks in advance for the resolution/suggestion.

You guys are not getting my point.
I am using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8/9 for creating a PDF that picks up text files and image (Jpg, bmp, tif) files from a network shared folder and inserts them into an empty Template PDF file by making use of Acrobat events through Javascript.
This all works fine as long I dont include any Tif file and PDF is created successfully.
Now all other file types including text files, jpgs, gif are opening up but problem is with .tif files.
You can check this by directly opening image files in Adobe Acrobat Profesional 8/9 from File --> Open menu option.
Other images will open up but most Tif files won't open in it. Such tif files also not open in "Winodws Picture and Fax Viewer" software but will open in softwares like "Imaging Professional" , "IrfanView" etc, which I think use some special codec for it.
If you know of any Acrobat plugin that can be incorporated in Acrobat professional and convert these tif files to PDF on the fly, would be of great help or have some any other suggestion you feel is right.
    Thanks

  • Self-created invisible system file not found via Finder's Find command

I need to see what is being created on my hard disk. To achieve that, I create a test file, call it .new in TextEdit, remove the hidden .rtf extension, and place it in one of the folders in /Library/Application Support. Then, I use Finders Find command, and ask to search This Mac, Created date: today, System files are included, File visibility Visible or Invisible, leaving the input field (for file contents or name) blank. The newly created file isn't found. I type its name into the input field, with the same result. I change its name to .new.plist . Same result. Suspecting that "System files" acutally means system files and doesn't include the Library on the top level, I place that same item in /System/Library/PodcastProducer. Same result.
Seriously, this is entirely incomprehensible. The Find command obviously doesn't do what it says it does. Could anyone tell me how to get it to, or name some alternative?
    Thanks a lot.

Actually you CAN get ressults for .whatever files and folders. I created a saved search for my home folder with the criterion of "File visibility::Invisible Items" and then "None of the following are true::Name contains" DS_Store, Icon or localized. The result is a list of 65 invisible items including things such as the files /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences.0017f20dca84.plis t (a dot file), /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/com.freeverse.5012 (something with the invisible flag set), the dot folder /Users/francine/.fontconfig, and many others of all of these types. I thought it was interesting that lots of them were inside the ~/Library folder, even though I did NOT specify including system files.
I don't know why the original poster can't get Spotlight, using the the Command-f method, to display dot files. When I was setting my own invisible items search up I did manage to crash the Finder once, so it may be that the query for invisible items is buggy. Here's the Raw Query:
    (true) && (((kMDItemFSInvisible = 1) && (!((kMDItemDisplayName = "\DS_Store"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\Icon"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\localized"cd)))))
If you go to a folder, do Command-f, then change from the default "Kind" to "Raw Query" and paste the above in as the query, you ought to get all the invisible files and folders, except the .DS_Store, Icon and localized files (of which there are likely hundreds of 'em in your home folder).

  • Why are my files not enabled when I try to file place?

I'm running Mac OSX Lion 10.7.3. When I try to "place" a file in a document, the files are greyed out in Finder's window. Each time, I have to choose "Enable all readable documents" in bottom of my finder window to make them available.
PS 5, by default, showed them as enabled. Can anyone HELP?

Have you tried resetting your preferences? That usually clears up issues like this. FAQ: How do I reset my preferences?

  • Offline file issues with windows 8.1 not responding

    Hi,
I am trying to make a teachers home folder available offline so the teacher can access his work at home. I am using windows 8.1, and offline files is enabled. When I select the folder to make it available offline nothing happens, usually it should go through
a process of making the folder available offline.
Any help or advice will be helpful
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Please check the offline setting in Sync Center first.
Open Control Panel, then type offline in
    search bar and press Enter.
Make sure Offline file is enabled.
Also you can try to use a little txt file for test if it could be offline access.
If problem persists, please check Event Viewer if it identify this problem.

  • 2008 R2/ Win7 Offline Files Sync causing High Load on server

    Hi Everyone,
I have recently been investigating extremely high CPU Usage from the System Process on my company's main File Cluster.
We managed to track SRV2.sys Threads causing high CPU load within the system process, but was having issues identifying why this was the case.
As per Microsoft's direction via support call, we have installed the latest SRV2.sys Hotfixes, but this does not appear to have allivated the issue we are experiencing. We have also added more CPU and Memory into both nodes, which has not helped either.
We have since managed to create a system dump and is being sent to MS Support for analysis.
I have noticed the following that appears to happen on our cluster:
Whenever our CAD/Design department run certain functions within their apps running on a windows 7 client (apps include MicroStation, Revit, AutoCAD etc) we see a massive spike and flatline of the system process.
We found several users with Windows 7 clients that have Configured Offline File to sync an entire Network Volume (some volumes are 2TB Plus, so would never fit on a users computer anyway, i was quite shocked when I found this). How we spotted this was through
Resource Monitor, the System Process was trolling through all the folders and files in a given volume (it was "reading every single folder). Now, while this was the system process, we could identify the user by using the Open Files view in Server Manager's
    Share and Storage Management tool.
I have done a fair bit of research and found that a lot of CAD/Drawing applications in the market have issues with using SMB2 (srv2.sys). When reviewing the products that we use, I noticed that a lot of these products actually recommended disabling SMB2
and reverting to SMB1 on File Server and/or the clients.
I have gone down the path of disabling SMB2 on all Windows 7 clients that have these CAD Applications installed to assist with lowering the load (our other options are to potentially shift the CAD Volumes off our main file cluster to further isolation these
performance issues we have been experiencing.) We will be testing this again tomorrow to confirm that the issue is resolved when mass amounts of CAD users access data on these volumes via their CAD Application.
We only noticed the issue with Offline Files today with trying to sync an ENTIRE Volume. My questions are:
Should Offline File sync's really cause this much load on a File Server?
Would the the size of the volume the sync is trying to complete create this additional load within the system process?
What is the industry considered "Best Practice" regarding Offline Files setup for Volumes which could have up to 1000+ users attached? (My personal opinion is that Offline Files should only be sync of user "Personal/Home" Folders
as they users themselves have a 1 to 1 relationship with this data.)
Is there an easier way to identify what users have Offline Files enabled and "actually being used" (from my understanding, Sync Center and Offline Files are enabled by default, but you obviously have to add the folders/drives you wish to sync)?
If I disable the ability for Offline Files on the volumes, what will the user experience be when/if they try to sync their offline files config after this has been disabled on the volume?
Hoping for some guidance regarding this setup with Offline Files.
    Thanks in Advance!
    Simon

    Hi Everyone,
Just thought I would give an update on this.
While we're still deploying http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2733363/en-us to
the remainder of our Windows 7 SP1 fleet, according to some Network Traces and XPerf that were sent to MS Support, it looks as though the issu with the Offline Files is now resolved.
However, we are still having some issues with High CPU with the System Process in particular. Upon review of the traces, they have found a lot of ABE related traffic, leading them to believe that the issue may also be caused by ABE Access on our File Cluster.
We already have the required hotfix for ABE on 2008 R2 installed (please see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2732618/en-us), although we have it set to a certain value that MS believe may be too high. Our current value is set to "5", as that is the lowest level of any type of permission is set (i.e. where the lowest level of inheritance
    is broken).
I think I will mark this as resolved regarding the Offline Files issue (as it did resolve the problem with the Offline Files)...
Fingers crossed we can identify the rest of the high load within the System Process!!!

  • Smartcard Logon not enabled

We're running ADCS on a domain joined WS2008RS server.  Autoenrollment has been enabled (via GPO) for both the computer and user configurations (as verified through rsop.msc).
The domain controllers have enrolled in the following certificate templates:
    Kerberos Authentication
    Domain Controller
    Domain Controller Authentication
The test user has enrolled in the Smartcard Logon template.
Yet when trying to logon via smartcard on the host I receive an error like "account is not enabled for smart card login".
I then proceed to check the box on my user account in AD which states "require smartcard for interactive login" and also enable the same setting on my client system (Security Options\Interactive Logon: Require smart card).
My logon is still denied but states I should check with your administrator to ensure smartcards are enabled for login.
I've also enabled the workstation authentication template which my test system has successfully enrolled in.
Anyone been through this or have some pointers where to look?  We're now digging around in a hay stack.
    Thanks!

We have had this problem a few times - solved by re-issuing the Domain Controller Authentication cert.
        On DC, opened
    mmc.
        Click
    File, Click Add/Remove Snap-in.
        Select
Certificates, click Add, then select Computer account.
        Expand
Certificates (Local Computer), right-click Personal, click
All Tasks, and then click Request New Certificate.
        In the
Request Certificates page select Domain Controller Authentication
See if that works for you!

  • How to Move Offline Files Cache in Windows 7?

I'm using the offline files feature in Win7 (much better implementation, btw - kudos!) and I've run into a problem:  the CSC is using up all the drive space on C:\.  I'd like to move the CSC to D:\, however I've been unable to do so.
I've seen this posted here previously (2/2009), however the response was to follow the instructions from Vista (using migwiz.exe).  When I launch migwiz.exe, I have no option of selecting the offline files as outlined in the Vista instructions (http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/archive/2006/12/12/moving-the-offline-files-cache-in-windows-vista.aspx).
Are there any other ways of doing this?
    Thanks!

    Hi everyone,
I have found a way to move the offline cache in W7, but it means you have to reset your existing offline files, give the new location, and resync the folders in the new location.
Here is what to do (if you haven't synchronised any offline files yet, for exemple after a clean install, you can start directly in step 3):
    0) Make sure your existing offline files are synchronised with the server, as you are going to lose ALL the offline copies and you don't want to lose any new/modified files. Make a backup if you're not sure and if the files are important.
    1) reset the content of the old cache by adding the following command in a batch file and running it (of course you can add the parameter in the registry manually, but it's quite handy to have the batch ready whenever you need to reset the cache):
    REG ADD "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters" /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    2) Reboot, the added key will be detected, all the content of the cache will be deleted, as well as the key itself (it only resets once)
    3) Add the following registry key in the same HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters section of the registry:
    Type: REG SZ (string)
    Name: CacheLocation
Value: the new location in NT format, ie \??\d:\csc if you want to create the new cache in d:\csc
    4) Create the folder in the new location
    5) Reboot (not sure if it's necessary, but better safe than sorry)
    6) Reselect the files/folders you want to sync offline, and they should sync in the new location.
    7) If you want to, you can delete the old cache location in c:\windows\csc by following the end of the vista procedure linked in the first post (using takeown etc)
It worked for me (Win7 RTM x86), let us know if it works for you...
Obviously it won't help if you don't want to / can't resynchronise, but if you're starting from scratch or don't mind resyncing from scratch, it's a good workaround.
EDIT: if you sync a lot of files and get a lot of errors, try to reset your offline files again following the above procedure (steps 1-2), disable offline files, reboot, enable offline files, reboot, and resync your files. Again, it worked for me...

  • Excel 2010 changes relative link paths to absolute in files synced with Offline Files in Windows 7

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this problem: I have a large number of Excel 2010 and 2003 files in a folder on my file server. This whole folder is also synced to my computer using Offline Files in Windows 7. I have a lot of references between
cells in different Excel files, and all referenced workbooks are physically in the same folder. This all works nicely when I create these files at work - all file paths referenced in the cells are created as relative paths and the documents open correctly.
This is, I understand, the expected and default behavior when Excel creates links. When I edit these files at home, nothing seems odd until I get back to work and sync these files back to the file server. At this point, I discovered that Excel 2010 has, when
I saved the files while away from the corporate network, changed /all/ the cell references in any offline-edited Excel files to point at absolute paths, and that these absolute paths point to somewhere in my %APPDATA% structure. So whenever I come to work
and I try to open an Excel file that I have recently worked with offline, I get a bunch of error messages about referenced files that are missing, although clearly they exist in the same folder as the file I've opened, and I must edit all the file references
again, whereupon they are again created correctly as relative paths (since all files exist in the same folder), which are promptly mangled into absolute C:\....\Offline Files\.....\..... paths whenever I save them at home (and since that works too, I don't
notice it again until I come back to work and the offline files are synced back to the real network location). This seems to be a case of Windows 7's Offline Files not being able to fool Excel 2010 into believing it is working on a file server - apparently
Excel 2010 can see through the fakery and decides on it's own to "fix" the problem (which obviously isn't a problem since the paths are relative to begin with) by saving the paths as absolute paths instead. Yes, really clever, Excel. The exepected behavior
according to MSKB is that links are created as relative paths, so why does it change to absolute whenever Offline Files are involved? I know Offline Files only syncs, it doesn't actually change the files, so I can conclude that Excel is the program at fault
here. Is there a fix for this, or a known workaround? Because frankly, this bug makes it impossible for me to work in any advanced manner with linked Excel files. The sad thing is that this worked perfectly fine with Office 2003 and Windows XP. Is there a
patch for this problem that I might have missed (I am running the latest Service Pack and I get Office updates from Microsoft Update). If not, is there a workaround I can use to prevent Excel from corrupting my links when I edit the files offline?

    Hello danceswithwindows,
    Thank you for your post.
This is a quick note to let you know that we are performing research on this issue.

    Hi,
There is no such PowerShell command can achiev this. Maybe you can use a script to get the user name with folder redirection enabled. However, I am not familiar with writing script, and it would be better for you to ask in script forum below for professional
    assistance:
