Offline media management

"Volume management New
Freely manage and organize your images across multiple drives, and continue to work with the high-resolution previews even when your originals are offline. "
This is exactly not happening in the LR2 trial - unless I'm missing something. Here, everything is grayed out, if the original can't be found.
Why can't we just have exported JPEGs stack with the original regardless of folder position? I want to have the originals on my external disks and configurable JPEG renditions on my laptop's disk. Best case: Automatic and with the same folder structure as original. If these renditions can act as previews, even better.
Note: I don't want a solution involving another piece of software and 1:1 previews are too big for my taste (and while standard-sized previews can be configured, they are limited to 2048px max).
Kind regards,
Martin

I have the same problem as Martin with grayed out previews of offline images in both LR1.4 and LR2.
While working on my intel based iMac using its default catalog all previews are fine and I can also view images that are offline, stored on an external drive.
To transfer this catalog to my Powerbook G4 I backed it up to the external drive. I started LR on the laptop, using the backed up catalog and now all previews of the images stored on the external drive a visible, but the offline previews from the photos stored on the iMac are all grayed out.
I changed the File Handling in Catalog Settings from 'Automatically Discard 1:1 Previews: After 30 days' to 'Never' but that did not make a difference.
Any advice on this subject will be appreciated,
Anja

  • After RT offline, media manager imports DV but timeline imports JPEG qualit

After RT edit I use media manager to re-import seclected full rez footage into a sequence w. DV presets. Afterward when I play the sequence, all the video is a 320x280 jpeg size inside the larger, black 720 frame. Sequence has DV settings but each clips brought into the viewer shows jpeg settings.
Two questions: 1) what am I doing wrong with Media Manager and
    2) can I use "reconnect media" somehow to connect 720 timeline with the 720 video. The which is on hardrive - it was imported during media management operation. Just didn't make it to the timeline. I dont want to reimport a second time. Thank you.

Captured in Offline RT initially, finished the sequence then used media manager to reimport the footage used in the sequence. Defined DV settings for the sequence but even though media manager had me insert all my tapes and captured DV quality footage - which I can see on my drive - the new sequence (which has DV full frame settings) plays 320 jpeg sized video.
I had done a test of media manager before I started the project and it worked. So I may be doing something wrong with a setting somewhere. FCP Help is a little light on explaing the steps.
Also, since media manager DID import the DV footage I need, can I connect the DV seqenece to this footge without having to import again. I tried highlighting a few cuts in the sequence and selecting "reconnect media" but that just reconnected me to the JPEG material.
    Thanks.

  • Using Media Manager to 'Make Offline' it re-names media files to 'Private'

For some reason Media Manager is changing the name of media files when processing them making it impossible to reconnect them.
My director always has a complete copy of our film's media files on his 'home set-up' (FCP 5.0 on a Powerbook with 2 x 500gb firewire drives) so he can look at our cuts at home. This has caused problems in the past with firewire drives expiring or failing to mount: making the whole process pointless. Also, as the amount of footage increased, he struggled to find space for the 6-8 drives required.
My solution was to down-convert our DV resolution media files to Photo-Jpeg resolution which allowed me to fit 3TB of footage onto 2 brand new G-Tech drives. Every time I sent him a cut to view all I had to do was use media manager to make the sequence offline and convert it to exactly the same Photo-Jpeg setting I used to export the files. All he has to do is reconnect the sequence to his drives at his end.
A wonderful plan except when you came to reconnecting. I found that 95% of clips connect perfectly and then you get asked for the location of some media files called 'Trashes' 'Applications' or more commonly, 'Private'. Obviously no such files existed - I use an impeccably organised and structured filename system when capturing. Therefore it made random clips in my sequence impossible to reconnect once it had been converted to the settings used by the director.
When this only happened once or twice I thought I could easily just work out what files it was actually looking for by the clip names on the timeline and tell FCP to reconnect to the correct file by ignoring the file name but this is so time consuming and impractical when you have 20/30 clips that have been renamed on a sequence. It is also not the sort of thing my director is technically capable/willing to do.
It also seems to be happening when you convert things in the other direction. When I took a sequence from the director's project and brought it back onto my system by converting his sequence to my DV-PAL settings we got the same problems with 'Private and 'Applications' clips. And we know for sure that all of these clips were online on his computer.
Has anyone seen this before or know any steps I could take to prevent it happening.
I fear that if I can't get this method to work I will have to give him full resolution media to work with and I will be fated to spend the rest of my days replacing. smashing or swearing at firewire drives that only work when they feel like it.
    Anybody got any ideas.
    Cheers

haven't tried this but it may be worth some investigation.
try exporting an XML of your sequence and passing that to the director
on the director's FCP setup, import the xml, and in the Import XML... window uncheck the "Override with setting from XML" checkbox, and choose the approriate offline res that matches the directors media.
see if the resulting sequence will reconnect

  • Using Media Manager to Decompose offline clips only (Like Avid)

OK... Here's the scenario. I have a Timeline sequence lasting 10 mins. This timeline has been edited direclty from 20 x 1 hour clips from 20 x 1 hour tapes with timecode. I have stored the media on 2 external FW800 drives but one of the drives has failed leaving me with a timeline with half of the clips missing iy's media. The edit is at a pretty final stage and we need to re-dig the media but want to only re-dig that which is missing.
Using Media manager or any other software element is there a way of batch capturing only the short offline (decomposed) clips from the timeline without re-digising the whole of the 10 hours which is missing from the drives. Also., to make things more complicated, this has to be done automatically i.e. without re-editing the clips from the browser back into the timeline.
I would be most grateful for any help on this matter as this is the only thing that seperates Avid Media Composer from FCP as a proper media manager tool.
    Thanks!!!

  • Media Manager - Prores to DV-Pal(offline) back to online?

    Hi,
I'm using FCP 7. Have 5 streams of XDcam 1920 x1080 converted to prores for editing.
My system can't handle multicam editing these five HD streams so I converted my footage to prores.
With all of my prores seq synced I used Media Manager to Recompress into DV-Pal for multicam editing.
Now I am finished my edit and want to make an online version (back to original Prores)
Do I now use media Manager to Recompress again to prores or is there a way of just relinking back to my original prores which already exists on my system??
    Thanks

If you done this properly all you need to do is use media manager to make an offline version at the original format and relink to the original files.  At least that's the way I've worked without any problems.  But my projects did not involve multicam, so it's possible it mighrt be a good idea to collapse your multiclips before doing the media manage.  But you should always TEST your workflow before diving in at the deep end of the pool.

  • Media Manager - offline to online issue

Hope someone can help with this issue.
first for reference here is my work flow.
I copy the timeline sent from my client into a new project. from there I media manage the timeline to create an offline so that I can conform the show in hd.
The problem I am having is that on some reels for example there are 10 clips to capture but when I go to capture them fcp tells me that there are 20 clips to capture. This is adding time to my conform.
Has anyone else had this issue? And is there something I'm doing wrong or could do to correct the issue?
    Regards;
    Rocky

You'll need to give more information.
What makes you think there are only 10 clips?
Do you count the cideoclips only? Are there maybe cuts in the audio that you need to take in account?
Did you check the Reelnumbers in the browser columns?: Are there clips of which you think they come from different reels, but in the browser thay accidently have the same reel name?
Is it always 2 times the amount you expected. (You said 10 becomes 20. Is this always doubled, or is it sometimes 10 clips become 18? or 23?)
If the former, then you might have your system settings set to capture Audio and Video to different files, which will double the amount of Captured clips from the masterclips

  • Cant locate offline clips after deleting unused media using Media Manager

    Hi,
I recently used Media Manager for the first time to clean up an old project of mine, and delete unused media to save some space. Having read and re-read all manuals/help I proceeded with the 'Use Existing' command in the Media Manager...and now a big portion of my files are offline.
There was no option to 'save to a location' but when I go to 'reconnect media' the pathway for these offline files is -
    Macintosh HD:private:var:tmp:folders.501:TemporaryItems
and the clips are labelled with '-2' or '-3' after their name.
Ive used spotlight and searched through my HD and lacie - and I cant find the location above at all! Im getting worried, as i need to go back into the project to make some really minor changes but cant face re-capturing material then eye-matching the shots ive used, it will take days! These clips must be floating around somewhere on the system?
    Please please help! Thank you!!

Thanks Chris - I can go back to my source material although dont know if I can batch capture ok as the source material was captured in an old version of FC Express and had been moved over to my new FCP 4 - dont know if this might cause problems...i hope not!
Regarding the backup of source material - just wondering if theres any other way to make those files smaller - it seems a waste of valuable storage space if Ive captured say an hours worth of footage but only ended up using 20 mins of it in my end sequence (for example). Is there no way to get rid of that extra 40 mins of media that ill never use again?

  • Media Manager...am I doing the right thing?

I'm making an amateur film in Final Cut Pro. Since I'm doing the sloppy (although much less time consuming for me) batch capture method, I have right now far too much DV footage for my scratch HD.
To fit in the final scene, I have to delete some material. I was going to use the media manager, set it to "Use Existing" media and delete anything that was unused in a few of my sequences. I tried this in a test sequence by selecting the sequence alone and then performing the media manager operation. It seemed to work fine.
    My questions are these--
    1. If I captured my footage as one big clip, then split up the big clip and made the split clips into "independent clips," am I doing anything egregiously wrong with the Media Manager with these settings?
    2. Is there any tutorial/link/settings anyone can recommend in the media manager for a newcomer to FCP like myself? Any suggestions about how to make sure I won't delete something I don't want to?
    Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, no. Media Manager is a failure in FCP
that has been completely ignored by Apple since it
    was introduced.
Not quite true... It's been rewritten several times... the interface isn't friendly, partly because it does so many different things other than just consolidating media...
But no one seems to take the time to read the top box which explains what you have set the MM to do... it's there and very understandable - just nobody seems to read the dang thing...
For some folks, MM works perfectly
    and predictably.
Like me who reads the summary, and consistently use it before the media has taken all the space up and there's no way to make "copies" first... And when the audio is finished in the offline, I'll copy and paste the clips to the mm'd sequence, or export a stereo mix and edit that into the MM'd sequence.
I encourage you to search the forum for Media Manager
posts. It will take you several hours to wade through
the screeds but you will find many helpful
    suggestions.
The explanation in FCP's manual explains it pretty well... again user's are not reading the manual... See section IV-77 of the manual (available online thru help if you don't have the printed copy handy).
Because of this, my next commercial training effort (a DVD) will have a very detailed explanation of the MM... and it's not going to be a reading exercise... rather a QT movie of it all... no reading required.
And in answer to the original post, the only thing that could cause problems is the fact that "using existing" will delete the original files in the process and if there's a hitch there (like a corrupted copy, or a crash etc.., you can't recover as easily. It's safer to use "copy" instead, but that of course requires that you have open space for the copies that you can check before you delete the original files so it's really not going to be useful to those who didn't think ahead... pretty common problem.
I'm not saying that MM is without flaws (the confusing interface is one of them apparently), but am saying that there's a way to use it properly and have a lot better time of it...
Jim Cookman here has a workaround that works very well too... Don't use it. Instead, Jim logs clips as individual master clips first, so he can manually delete media that is no longer needed... Of course this takes the patience that most users don't seem to have for what ever reason.

  • Media Manager: What features do work?  What doesn't?

    Hi,
For those people for whom the media manager works, what works? What doesn't? What version of FCP and MacOS are you using?
I've just spent the last several hours trying to reconnect clips by hand after FCP 5.0.4 crashed while using the Media Manager to consolidate Media Files into one folder (from the manual volume 4 pg 104-105) for archiving. I am beginning to despair. Luckily I've done this after writing out what should be the final version of my project to DVD, so if I can't succeed, as long as I don't need to edit anything I should be ok.
I can tell you what's not working for me: the workflow of capture-now an entire miniDV tape to disk. I've tried many different approaches, and everything seems broken. I am using Mac OS X 10.3.9 and FCP 5.0.4.
Specifically the aspects of Media Manager which are broken for me:
    1) (page 103) Removing Portions of Media Files after creating subclips. "A common logging and capturing workflow involves capturing each tape to a single media file, breaking the master clip into subclips, and then using the Media Manager to create individual media files for each subclip."
That is just plain broken. Even when I delete the master file as recommended, it does not break up the media file into individual files for the subclips. I've seen that problem referenced here before. Creating subclips from the subclips and removing subclip limits gives me the entire 1 hr tape again, when all I want is the smaller portion which does not cross DV start/stop boundaries.
Talking with a creative helper at the Palo Alto Apple store I learned that if you don't delete any media between clips, it doesn't make a file break. I have not tested that, instead I used the alternate workflow he proposed of selecting my subclips (created from the markers made with DV start/stop detect) ctrl-click -> batch export, item settings: make movie self contained. Unfortunately, I discovered the hard way that that workflow introduces errors in the time code, making recapturing the project to reconstruct it impossible.
    2) Consolidating Media Files into one folder (pg 104-105) - This is also broken and caused FCP to quit unexpectedly. Both the source and destination disk had enough disk space to hold two or more copies of the entire project. What's worse, although I've been able to reconnect most of the clips created using the batch export process menioned above, some of them complain that they need the complete 1-hr clip to play properly. Those clips were deleted weeks ago, and I was able to edit and work on the project successfully without them. Why are they needed now? The small clips do appear on disk, I can see them but they won't play without the long file.
Nothing I've tried with the media manager has worked. Has anything worked for you? I'm especially interested if you use the "capture now" feature to capture 1-hr tapes and log later.
    Thanks,

I use MM all the time, but only for certain things. I can share some observations:
If you are using MM to "Create Offline - Remove Unused", the original media all needs to be present in order for the unused media to be removed from the offline clips MM creates. This is they way I use MM all the time - capturing long clips at RT or DV quality, and then removing unused media with MM, recapturing at high quality.
I might try to use MM to copy media used in a certain sequence, but I would never try to move the media in a way that would automatically remove or alter any of my already captured media. If FCP crashed in the middle of the operation (perhaps it hits a file with incorrect permissions) your media will be half-moved, and some of the media might get corrupted. I have reassembled a few projects like this for friends and it was not easy.
Speed adjusted clips - I still see TC issues every now and then when using MM on speed-adjusted clips - here is my workaround: I go through my edited sequence and pick out as many of the speed-adjusted clips as I can find, copying and pasting them into a new sequence, where I remove the speed adjustments. I include this new sequence in my selection when I initiate MM, this creates new master clips for the speed-adjusted material that are guaranteed to come up with the correct in and out points. If during my re-assembly I find that and of these clips have a problem, I know there will be enough media in the master clip to replace the speed-adjusted media without having to log and capture a new clip.
One major bug in MM I have found with FCP5 is that when using MM to convert a DV sequence to an Uncompressed offline sequence, any graphics or animation movie files (animation codec) can no longer be rendered at full quality without replacing them one by one. My last project had 70 of these files in a 1-hour program.

  • Bullseye Media Manager

    Hello,
I just finished a working version of a media manager I use for my personal account to handle my music and pictures collection. I decided to published it on AUR as I assume it might interest some people.
It's a python app with several modules.
Here's a little sum up of what it is about :
    Music module
    - Inspired by Amarok 1.4 and Exaile
    - Library browser show rating sum, playcount sum and burn factor by node (artist, album, track, etc...). Burn factor is high if you've listened a lot to a few tracks of a node.
    - Advanced queue managment with several flags to apply on queued tracks :
Stop flag : Once the player is done playing this track it will stop global playback
Temp jump : Once the player is done playing the current track, it will play this track and then go back where it left
Perm jump : Once the player is done playing the current track, it will play this track and then continue playback from here
Bridge source : Once the player is done playing this track, it will move to the bridge dest of this bridge source (if there is one)
Bride dest : Tells that this track is where the matching bridge source will lead when listened
    - Passive filters : hide tracks you do not want to see by showing only those matching filters, useful if you have a large collection and at some point just listen to a few tracks. Can be seen as content view modes.
    - Session saving/loading
    - Last.fm scrobbling with offline cache support
    - Function to sync playcounts with Last.fm account
    - Function to import ratings from another Bullseye database (including BullseyeDroid)
Other modules (pictures, videos, and later custom)
    - Manages files based on what there are and not just where they are on the disk
Basically, what you have to do with these modules is creating categories (~ based on subject form) and universes (~ based on subject content). Then after Bullseye has scanned indexed folders for new files, you load some of these files and drag and drop them in the matching categories / universes. You can create an arborescence of categories and universes. For example, I can create the root category "Characters" and a sub-category "Warriors" to it. I can also create a root universe "Dragon Ball" and a sub-universe "Piccolo" to it. Then if I have a picture of the warrior character Piccolo from Dragon Ball, I'll load it and drag and drop it in "Warriors" and "Piccolo". This picture will then matches the criteria "Characters", "Warriors", "Dragon Ball" and "Piccolo".
    - Can move every indexed files to a proper structure. If you just download and copy files, search for them in Bullseye then add them in the proper category and universe, it will work. But it will be a real mess on disk. Bullseye can move every indexed files to a proper structure on disk, based on categories, universes or both.
    - Function to check for doubloons
    - Video & Music module support multiple backends : GStreamer, VLC, Phonon and MPlayer (not there right now)
Music module browser and flags demo : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF5114mLWhQ
Categories & Universes management introduction with pictures module : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3i1plNSpsg
    Gtk2 package : https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=58903
    Qt4 package : https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=58905
Theses versions are not really polished but should work quite properly (but they probably contain bugs since no one has used them except me).
    Thanks for any feedback.

Qt Version was broken, and wasn't loading the database (thus no music was showing).
My vim setup trims extra whitespace from files, so I created a diff that ignores white space to allow a cleaner application of the patch:

As a side note, there seems to be a lot of differences between the gtk and qt versions. Aside from potentially not having qt installed, is there a reason to maintain two versions? Alternatively, i wonder if it would make since to separate the project into a library and the gui's which implement the library (kind of like xmms and mpd do)? • Offline Image Management

All of the other Digital Asset Management (DAM) software packages that I have used manage offline storage. Some have built-in capability to burn CD/DVD's; others just recognize that it has been done. However, all of them track the offline media by serial number, and allow the user to assign a more friendly name to the disk. This allows one to locate the disk containing an image. Without this, support for offline images is not particularly useful.
So far as I have been able to determine, Lightroom does not provide any capability for this. In particular, when I import images from a CD (leaving them in place), Lightroom recognizes the drive on which the CD is mounted. When I attempt to reference the images later, with the CD unmounted, Lightroom provides the standard Windows dialog box to find a missing file.
Is there some capability for Lightroom to manage offline images that I have not found? If not, has anyone looked into coordinating it with a real DAM package? I like Lightroom's workflow and raw conversion, but I need image management, too.
    Thanks,
    David

Thanks for that pointer. I have a PC rather than a Mac, but that may be effective on a PC, too.
However, what I'd really like Lightroom to do is integrate with iMatch. It tracks offline images, and names of mountable media (i.e., CDs and DVDs). It also scales very well, and is quite fast.
The problem I have had with iMatch is that it is not integrated into my workflow, and I tend not to enter relevant metadata for my images for relatively long periods of time. Then, of course, I have a lot to do, and it's a chore. If I were able to enter metadata - categories, keywords - in Lightroom, as I process my images, and then easily import that metadata into iMatch, I would be much happier.
I'll look around in the iMatch forum some more. Most of the discussion I saw there looked a little backwards to me - it was about moving images and metadata from iMatch to Lightroom.

  • Names do not correspond timeline media manager

    Hello,
I'm trying to use media manager to send a timeline with only the used media to Da Vinci. Something weird happens with the names of clips that come from the same source clip. Normally MM makes a new source clip for every clip in the timeline with the same name but adds a number. For instance, 2011104-1_guate2161_01 would become 2011104-1_guate2161_01 1, 2011104-1_guate2161_01 2 and so on. In this project only the first new source clip in the timeline has the full name. The new source clips that follow are called 2011104-1 2, 2011104-1 2 and so on. These names do not correspond the clip names in the new timeline which is not a problem for FCP. DaVinci however doesn't recognize these names and needs the full names (inc guate_2161_1) based on the xml.
I tried both naming options in MM but the same problem occurs. Any ideas?
    cheers

    I found the solution,
After the MM proces, take all clips in the new timeline offline and reconnect them again with the new master clips. The names in the timeline now correspond the names of the new master clips. Next make a new xml and voila!

  • Media managment nightmare

How are people managing media through various workflows?
I travel alot thus I use a mac laptop to offload my P2 cards on to a bus powered external HDD. When I get back to my hotel I backup to a 600Gb Lacie d2. When back at home I use a 1.2Tb as a main repoitory.
This gives me a potential of 4 locations for my footage (inc Mac Hd). I work using FCP using each of the various drives depending on my location. I also DON'T use the "capture bin" for keeping my footage as I find it far to limiting. I have my own "homebrew" directory so I can quickly locate files without FCP.
SO is there an excepted workflow that keeps all these things in sync without having to move around render files and search for the offline media and the really annoying reseting scratchpads etc.
Thoughs on this would be much appreciated!
    Cheers

but it only costs about .50 per card that way, and it's more reliable than disk drives, and serves to backup the shoot more or less permanently. < </div>
Presenting a contrary point of view, the last several magazine articles I've been reading that discuss archiving and backing up are unanimous: hard drives remain the most dependable and stable file storage system. Even with known issues, long-term storage is super-reliable with only minor possibilities of damage that can be repaired or worked around using established data recovery techniques with long histories of success. The read-write-access speeds of hard drives are far superiro to burning optical media, too. Optical media is, by its physical nature, fragile and data loss from surface damage is usually catastrophic, even with checksum-style error protection.
But I'm NOT shooting on a full-blown set on P2s (and I have no desire to ever do so) so whatever you guys come up with that works for you is probably the best thing to share amongst yourselves.
Next year you will be recording 1080 directly to the flash in your 1Tb iPhone while it Bluetooths dailies to your client.

  • When I use media manager to upres clip audio goes out of sync

I captured a clip and put it in DVNTSC 48kHz timeline at OfflineRT NTSC (Photo JPEG) then used the media manager to create a new sequence at full DV NTSC 48kHz res. I choose "Create offline", "set sequences to DV NTSC 48 kHz", and check all the boxes. I save a new project, open the new timeline and recapture the clip. The video looks great--it recaptures in full DVNTSC 48kHz res. But the audio is out of sync (by about 28 frames it looks like). What am I doing wrong? (This is the first time I'm trying this offline-then-online-process.) thanks.

Try exporting the iMovie project as a single full quality dv format quicktime file.
I use iMovie6 HD and this is my usual procedure that works well.
Make the movie in iMovie, will involve many separate clips. When finished, export (share) as a single full quality dv format quick time file. When I have an hours worth of smaller projects, I create a new iMovie project and import all of the quicktime .dv files for each separate short project. I add chapter markers in this project, then share with iDVD. I then burn an hours worth of stuff at best quality and distribute to family and friends.
iDVD seems to work better with iMovie source that has fewer clips.
BTW: Are you having problems with standard def or hi def iMovie source. Another part of my procedure is that I take the raw tapes and download the entire thing into one iMovie project. I don't edit or change the footage at all, just want to archive to DVD for posterity. In this case, I want to share the iMovie project with iDVD directly. This has worked OK for standard def projects, but my first hi def project (1080i) that I tried, the sound was out of sync. To fix this, I had to create a regular DV widescreen iMovie project, and drag all the clips into it from the HD project. It took over an hour for my humble mac mini to convert the files, but I was then able to share with iDVD and the finished DVD worked ok.
    Hope this helps.

  • Media Manager Woes

My apologies in advance if this topic has already been posted and answered; I could not find it & I'm under the gun...
We lost all the captured footage for 2 30-minute shows; but we retained the projects intact. They were 90% complete, and we had cut down a lot from what we had originally loaded.
The problem is that using Media Manager to trim down the amount of footage we're re-capturing is not working as expected. I chose the sequences we need, went to MM, and selected "create offline". I chose "use existing", checked "delete unused media from selected items" with handles of 1 second, did NOT check "duplicate selected items and place into a new project". All as desribed in Volume IV, page 98 of the Final Cut 5 manual.
But when I try re-capture this footage, FCP will load all 3 minutes of the original clip, even though there was only 20 seconds of it in the sequence. It's a huge time waster. Not too worried about disk space this time.
It has proven true in all my attempts to use MM, & I've tried with "create offline" as well, keeping the "include master clips outside selection" UNchecked, as well as "include affiliate clips outside selection"
I know I'm missing SOMETHING. could someone illuminate me?
    Thanks

It sounds like your mistake was not creating a new project in Media Manager.
Select your timeline(s) (put them all in one bin), go to Media Manger, and DO select "Duplicate selected items..."
That will make a new project file. Then you can recapture the footage only from the timelines by using Batch Capture.
