Offline RAID

Motherboard: K7N2 Delta ILSR
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2600+
RAM: 1.5GB Kingston Hyper X (three chips)
HD: 2 - Western Digital SATA 80GB in RAID 0 configuration
BIOS: Latest from web site
Problem: The array is going offline often. Both on boot and in Windows.
Sometimes when I reboot, the array only shows one hard drive.
Other times I can see both hard drives.
I tried to update the RAID driver from your web site, but on restart, I only
get the blue screen.
To correct this,  I must delete the array and then create the array.
Then it will boot OK
I tried different hard drives, but the same thing happened with them.
Can you help me?
Is the motherboard defective?
thank you in advance!

try to plug the 2 drives on different MOLEX lead (the power connectors for the drives should be on different cacles leading to the PSU).
I've had this problem too with my RAID setup (but not so bothering, as it was a RAID5, so i could just resynchronize), i redid the power cabling, using different leads for the drives and now if works flawlessly.

You don't break a stripe array into two drives and have anything to work with, you can easily break a mirror raid though.
SoftRAID "takes over" and replaces from Apple's and can 'recover' an array.
You should never work with or run with a stripe RAID0 and not have a couple current backups - unless the array is just for scratch.
Data recovery only read the volume, and recovers to another physical hard drive, it is not done "in place." that would be disk repair type operations, such as Disk Warrior 4.4. Data Rescue 3 is what most people try to use first, demo mode. If it seems to work then $99 to buy.
SoftRAID 4 $129 might be your only choice though I think something is getting lost in translation as to what type and nature and its current state. Email support there, they will walk you through.
And have 3-4 more drives to work with. A large enough drive for backup, one for recovery, and two new drives taht you will want to initialize, zero, and use to build a new 2nd array. Say a pair of WD Black 1.5TB $159 each.
SoftRAID will test all your drive surface for defects during initialize (long format) and during idle background scan.

  • How can I mount a Raid set (partition in an external drive)?

    Hi,
I have 3 partitions in my external drive. I tried to create a concatenated Raid from 2 of the partitions. However, I end up with an offline Raid Slice (one of the partitions is under this slice) which is grayed out in Disk Utility.
When I try to delete the Raid Set, I get "Deleting RAID set failed. This RAID configuration is not valid" warning. When I try to erase the RAID volume, I get "Volume Erase failed with the error:The chosen size is not valid for the chosen filesystem." warning. I cannot mount the volume either.
So, I have 2 of the 3 partitions mounted. The 3rd partition (which is under RAID) is unmounted. Do you have any suggestions to have access to the 3rd partition?
    Thanks.

Why are you trying to RAID two partitions on the same drive? Aside from the fact that it doesn't work it also makes no sense when you can simply create a larger partition by joining the two into one.

  • Sharpening in LR 1.1

    1. What is the difference between the sharpening in LR 1.1 develop module (which I gather is like capture sharpening) and Capture Sharpening in PhotoKit Sharpener?
    2. What is the prefered workflow: do intial global changes & sharpening in LR and then edit in PS for other changes vs do initial global changes in LR and then edit in PS and do PhotoKit Capture Sharpener there?
    Thanks,
    Matthew Kraus

    Matthew,
I do exactly what you do when I edit for clients--everything they originally paid for is archived as is! Takes up real estate but saves $ in the long run.
But for my own work, anything I print or sell is treated as above, but all other work stays in metadata now until such time as I have a definite use for it. I do have archives of my own past work (in several formats for each image sometimes with identical names and differing extensions) that I access when needed. I have no intention of bringing all that into LR except on a 'have need' basis. I think it is important to keep the DB (or DBs) as small as practical.
Needless to say, all the above work, clients, and my own, gets backed up to offline raid 0 and to offline DVDs atored in a fireproof safe offsite. That includes a DB back up for the lightroom work each time I finish a batch. I should add that most of my work is done in Bridge/ACR/PS because of faster workflow. But I am testing the Library function of LR to determine its suitability as a
DAM and as an app for reworking small batches or single archived images already developed in ACR previously.

  • Mac Pro RAID 5 disk goes offline frequently in a random way. What can be causing this odd behavior?

    Hi dudes,
I installed recently two Mac Pro RAID cards inside their corresponding Mac Pro systems. Four 2 TB Hitachi SATA disks are contained inside each system, and configured as RAID 5. Yes, the operating system is installed on this RAID 5 volume in order to get the highest performance of the array, taking advantage of the RAID 5 protection (Autodesk Smoke runs in each system; this application works only with uncompressed video in real time). I already had tested both systems keeping separated the boot disk just for the operating system, and making the RAID 5 volume just with three 2 TB disks, but the performance was slow on both systems.
The performance is now very good, but unfortunately, in both systems happens that sometimes one of the disks goes offline with no apparent reason. The RAID Utility immediately reports the failure and it is mandatory to declare as spare the disk that went offline. Then the rebuild process begins, but in the meantime, the performance goes down in a noticeable way. Sometimes it is even worse, because the disk disappears completely. Then, it is mandatory to turn off the system, and boot it up again, in order to see in the RAID Utility the missing disk, which needs to be declared as spare in order to be reintegrated into the RAID 5 volume in a slow rebuilding process.
Some important remarks: this very new Mac Pro systems do not have the iPass cable (at least apparently; I already disassembled completely one of these systems). This cable is mentioned in one Mac RAID card manual that I found over the internet. The diagrams do not match exactly with the Mac Pro nor the Mac Pro RAID board. I did not find a proper iPass connector in any of the Mac Pro RAID cards (?!). So, my guess is that currently the communication between the system and its Mac Pro RAID card is just by means of the internal bus. I think that if the iPass connection were mandatory, the RAID Utility would report it with a noticeable error message. Please advise.
I think that these Mac Pro RAID cards need a firmware upgrade, in order to be able to work fine with big SATA drives. Again, please advise.
    Thanks in advance from Mexico.
    Sincerely,
    Martin Ponce de Leon

    Hi Grant,
Thank you for your prompt response. The manual is a PDF document issued by Apple and it seems OK, but no updated to the latest Mac Pro system and Mac Pro RAID. I do not find the link where I found this manual. The systems belong to one of our customers. As far as I remember, in the printed manual included with the boards, it is not mentioned anything about the iPass cable, just about the battery cable. Do you know where can I get a PDF manual of the latest Mac Pro RAID card and the latest Mac Pro system? This client is far from our offices. So, I would prefer a PDF copy of this manual.
The drives that have gone offline, once they are back, are reported in a good status in the RAID Utility. Besides that, I have tested them in another system in our facilites, and all of them work fine. So, my guess is that the high capacity drives are not yet supported by the Mac Pro RAID card, or it requires a firmware update.
They do need to have in the same volume OS and video storage because three disks do no provide a good performance (they need also RAID 5), but four disks work fine... excepting when one disk is missing. Please advise. Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    Martin

  • RAID 5 array on PERC6/i offline

Ok, so we have a 2970 with a PERC6/i. 5 drives in a RAID 5 array, and one hot spare. I apparently lost two drives today, one to a failure, and one began showing as a foreign config. I cleared the foreign config and replaced the drive, but now on my array, I'm showing 3 drives and 2 slots marked "Missing". How can I bring this array back online and good to go without deleting and creating a new VD? Thanks in advance...

    IMPORT
ONLY used when an array is OFFLINE (non-functional/failed). If you have a 3-disk RAID 5 and two disks are foreign (or one foreign and one failed or missing), the RAID 5 is dead/offline. You must import in this case. If you replace a failed/foreign drive with a new one, and the new one is flagged as foreign and you import, you will corrupt your data.
    CLEAR
ONLY used when an array is ONLINE (up and running, functional). If you have a 3-disk RAID 5 and one disk is showing foreign (meaning that disk is also offline), you must CLEAR it (whether it is a replacement disk or an original), then assign it as a hot-spare.
Typically once you clear the foreign configuration, you do not get a second chance - the drive is then in a Ready state.

  • Offline Disc In Degraded Mirrored RAID Set

I have a 2 disc (300GB each) mirrored RAID set that has worked fine up until recently. One slice appeared failed so I attempted to rebuild it. 7 hours later it still showed up as failed. I attempted a rebuild once more and the same result. I then shut everything down and re-booted my whole system. Now the RAID set is still degraded but the slice now shows up as offline as opposed to failed.
I checked the connections and it's all connected fine.
I have run First Aid several times and no repairs were necessary.
Anyway I can get this back 'online'?
If not, can I delete it, repair it and if it's repaired add it back to the RAID set?

It sounds like one of the drives in the mirrored set has lost its mind (i.e., failed).
This is exactly the situation Mirrored RAID is good for.
Remove the failed drive, insert your spare drive of the same or larger size, and assign it as a spare. Then you should be able to get the RAID to rebuild onto the spare and bring it up to date in the next half-a-day or so. Then the mirror will show as working again.
Make sure your Backup is up-to-date. A second failure now (before the array has rebuilt) will give you data loss.

  • Disks in RAID "Offline" - won't mount

I can't get my mirrored RAID 1 array to mount. This comes after a forced shutdown. These are external firewire disks, daisy-chained, and hooked up to a G4's firewire port.
The drives power up fine, show up in Disk Utility, and even spin up when I click the "Mount" button, but they never show up on the desktop.
I tried to verify the array, and I got this error message:
    Verifying volume “Acomdata RAID”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid key length
    Invalid key length
Catalog file entry not found for extent
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
I click the "Mount" button, and the log says: "Mount of “Acomdata RAID” succeeded", but the Disk Utility window still shows the disk as Unmounted, and it never shows up on my desktop.
I've tried starting up the computer with disks already turned on, and also turning them on after the computer fully boots.
I tried booting from a Panther disk, and from a Tiger disk, and running Disk Utility from there. Panther doesn't even see it, and Tiger gives me the same error message. DiskWarrior sees the disk as "Unknown Disk".
The one clue I can find is in the RAID pane:
It shows the 2 RAID slices as "Offline", but I can't find anyway to put them online. Anyone have some ideas? Is this offline thing even matter?

    Bonjour Benoit,
You probably have to get "under the hood" with the RAID command-line utilities.
    Open Terminal.app, and type in
    sudo diskutil checkRAID
and give it your own password when it asks, and see what happens.

  • RAID went offline

After quitting FCP, I apparently dismounted my sliced RAID volume (2 250GB drives) improperly and now it's offline. I've tried to rectify the problem in Disk Utility, but with no success.
What happened in the dismount was I turned off the external hard drive before the computer had fully recognized the dismount. I got the Apple warning informing me of my mistake.
How do I get the RAID back online?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Matthew,
I have a self-built RAID-5 setup at ImageStream. On several occasions it has become partially corrupted by that same mistake. I have been able to fix it with Disk Warrior. It's probably worth a try. DW rebuilds the directory structure of the disk. I think the RAID would not mount in one case. Only Disk Warrior could see it at all. In another case, the RAID mounted, but I could not write to it. After Disk Warrior, all was well.

  • RAID Slices Offline

I have managed to answer my own original question on this but I want to know whether there was a better way.
Since upgrading to 10.4.9 I have had problems with an Apple RAID mirror. The Disk Utility showed both slices offline. The console log showed messages like:
hfsswapHFSPlusBTInternalNode: catalog key #24 invalid length (0)
Any attempt at using Disk Utility to fix the disk failed.
I did the upgrade with the RAID disks disconnected and I suspect this was the cause of the trouble. The mirror was disk5 built out of disk3s3 and disk4s3.
In the end I managed to make the computer recognise the RAID again by doing the following:
    diskutil removeFromRAID disk3s3 disk5
This removed disk3s3 from the mirror and the OS then mounted it on my desktop as a normal partition. After I had done this disk4s3 magically sprang to life so I ended up with two identical disks.
    I then used:
    diskutil addToRAID member disk3s3 disk5
and waited several hours for the mirror to rebuild.
Presumably the problem was a change in the format of some meta-data. Is there a better way to fix this sort of information?

This is the same Tech Tool that comes with AppleCare?
I bought the APP with my PowerBook and my Mac Pro, but in all these years I have never used it. I got the impression that it was just a glorified diagnostic tool and did very little to actually fix or repair problems. That is from the very little information that Apple provides with the plan.
Goes to show what I know. LOL. It must have some kind of repair abilities to cause damage to drives when it runs, right? But I don't know if I'd have a lot of confidence in a product that causes damage when it is is supposed to be fixing, unless it was a case of pebcak.
Long time ago, I used Mac Tools Deluxe and loved it. I actually enjoyed optimizing/defrag days.

  • G4 Raid Offline

I had to force-shutdown my G4 tower because of a monitor glitch. When I rebooted it gave me the "Improper device removal" message, although I didn't have any devices attached. I later realized that my internal raid icon was missing from the desktop. In Disk Utility it usually shows all the drives, but lists them as offline. However, occassionally when I reboot the computer, one of the drives is missing in Disk Utility, so I assume I'm having problems with that disk in particular, is there anyway I can remove that drive from the raid, copy the contents to another drive and replace the old one?
I've tried moving the suspect drive to an external case - when the external drive actually appears in Disk Utility, the raid is no longer offline, but all the drives are locked and the raid still isn't accessible.
Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated. I've searched Discussions for hours, as well as Google, and can't find anything.

    Hi David Moyle-
Was the drive that you used as a replacement an Apple-branded drive and the same size?
XServes have been known to have issues with drives that are not original ADMs as supplied by Apple. This could be one of those instances.

  • RAID 0 Goes Offline

I am using the K7N2 Delta ILSR mb.  I have two 80GB Seagate SATA drives raided 0 as a single 160GB drive in Array 1.  I have a 40GB Maxtor drive on IDE3 that I use as a back up in Array 2.  For some reason the 2 MAS drive just goes offline.  It did it once while I was installing WinXP, and tonight while I was in the proccess of backing up important files.  Each time this drive goes offline, the entire RAID goes offline.  So I went into the RAID BIOS and sure enough it reports that array 1 is RAIDed as 160GB, but only one drive is available (1 MAS).  The second drive only shows ?:?.  If I try to create Array 3, then the "lost" drive is available to be used in that array.  However, it cannot be used in Array 1 anymore.  What gives?  This is really frustraing.  I have tried resetting the CMOS and turning off the computer for several hours without any luck.  The only way to remedy the problem is for me to delete Array 1 and then recreate it.  Of course all of my data is gone after doing this.  Any help will be appreciated.
    BooDooSy

I was running into the same issues and then I figured out what my specific issue was which may not necessarily be yours.
I found that the power supply adapters for the Serial drives where the culprit. These things are built so cheaply that if I even slightly nudged the cable, it would bring one of my drives offline and require a rebuild every time. Thank God for mirrored raid! The only way I'd ever run a striped raid is if my raid bios could do 0+1.
My recommendation: don't use the adapters - they're utterly useless. Did I mention worthless?
What fixed my issue was getting a very nice power supply that has the SATA power connectors hard-wired into the power supply. The one I got cost a few bucks but it's reliable and stable voltages really sold me. I have not had the problem since. Oh yeah, nice warranty too. Would you believe I don't work for them? I tout their P/S because I like them that much.
    I got mine here:
    PC Power & Cooling
Hope this helps but I think Wonkanoby was on the right track in the beginning when he asked about your power supply.

My Residential server is used as a file and web server, however i also use it for learning so it has grown slow over the last couple of years, i now need to get it working ready for when i go to UNI. I have upgraded from windows server 2012 Standard to windows
server 2012r2 standard, i am on the same server, but have put a SSD as my primary drive(so i still have the old hard drive and can go back to that to get my data)
I have also done a BIOS update, so the logical disks (a 2TB RAID 1 with all my important documents) are not showing up on the RAID Configuration in the BIOS.
By changing settings i have managed to get the array to show up on server manager > File and storage services>Volumes>Storage Pools. however there are a number of exclamation marks shown next to the drive(s)
    I read in a Technet
    Article that i should "set
the storage pool to read-write "
I did this and then in the storage pool box at the top the exclamation mark says "Warning: Degraded".
In the Virtual Disks box (bottom left) the exclamation mark says "Unknown: Detached" and in the Physical Disks box (bottom right) it says "Warning Split" on the second disk.
I have disconnected all other Hard drives, however if i can't get my documents back will have to go back to windows server 2012. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
It seems that the second disk is failed, you need to add a new disk to the storage pool to replace the failed disk.

  • KT4 UltraBSR Raid SATA Offline (Again..)

    Hi there,
Today I tried for the 2nd time to install WinXP on my system. Using 2 SATA 80GB Seagate disks in Stripe mode.
Everything goes well, but approx 2 hours and 20 reboots (thanx to M$) later the system comes up with the stripe set offline (disk 1 not connected). Tried a reboot, works well again. 30 mins later the same thing, the disk is never coming online again. Swapping cables, no succes. OK, bad luck with one disk, so I get myself a brandnew one. Boots up OK, after 2 hours the same story......... Both times with the first disk.
Anyone experienced something like this or would it just be very very bad luck and coincidence ????
    MSI KT4 Ultra BSR
    MSI TI4600 SE
    2 x 512 DDR333
    Latest BIOS from MSI Live

I have the same motherboard, rev 1.0 with 12/2002 bios.
I also have the same drives, Seagate 80 GB SATA.
My drives "occassionally" would go offline.  Rebooting would correct the problem.  Since I was/am a serial ATA novice and I new the technology was new, I just thought it was a quirking BIOS, and would be fixed in a later release.
But, NOW I can't boot the drives at all...tried over a couple of days.
It turns out my 2nd channel drive shows as FREE whereas the 1st channel shows with ARRAY 1.  Did the same thing, switching power cables, switching data cables, and everything points to the drive.
After reading SERIAL ATA manual that came with board, it appears the SERAIL ATA configuration written on a reserved area of the disk has been wiped out.
Because I have been using the drives for a few months, and I loaded tons of software, I don't really want to restore.
I wondered if Dutchy had to "restore" from a backup, or if redefining the array saved his data(as the SERIAL ATA Manual seems to indicate).
Please let me know before I start on my endeavor..and what was the ultimate solution?
    Thanks.
