Offline view of Google My Maps (and Editing too)

I used to use Mapsy, a great little app that allowed to edit Google My Maps. It no longer works
I also looking at option to view my customize maps (Google My Maps) offline.
A web search did not give me quite the choices I was looking for...

As this also had me stumped for a while here's a small howto for everyone else.  The basic problem we're solving is you will be travelling to an area where you have no data connection but want to store a Google Map of the area you're going to.  You want to retain zoom levels and all details of the original maps.
To do this I am using a Linux PC with Firefox to prepare maps for offline use on an iPad 2.  The basic instructions can be found here on youtube I elaborate a bit and fill in the blanks.  First install the current screengrab plugin for Firefox.  Then visit Google Maps and select the area you want, and set the correct zoom level you need. 
If you do not want your map centred around the pin you must clear the pin (by using the drop down on the right of the map with the other satellite/terrain options) and re-center the map.  Finally copy the link to the map, which is currently on the left panel of Google Maps, paste into a text file and edit the size as in the video.  Save this as a map.html file and load again into Firefox.  Use the screengrab plugin to save this as a large .png image file (can me many Mb in size).  At this stage you can modify the image to add markers to points of interest if you require.
To get this file on your iPad - Use a site like this one to convert the image into a .pdf.  Upload this .pdf to your Dropbox account, then finally using the Dropbox app on the iPad download the .pdf onto your iPad's bookshelf.  The png and pdf files can be big, 10Mb or more, so be patient with the iPad while it renders them.
Et voila, a permanently stored copy of a piece of Google Maps.

  • Google Calendar maps and iPhone maps not working together anymore

    For several months I was accessing google calendar through Safari. I was able to click on the map link and it would take me to the iPhone maps. About a week ago it started to take me to Google mobile map page, which is not integrated into anything on the iPhone maps such as that GPS thingy which is kind of useful. Anyone have any thoughts on how I can get this to go back?
    I did the upgrade to 2.2 already and no changes.

    I agree. I posted about this about a month ago and the only answer I got was that perhaps it was the way which google was choosing to handle the functionality. I think the feature where you can click on an address in your Google Calendar (and it should work on your Iphone Calendar as well), and it comes up in the Iphone Maps application, is completely necessary, as the map in safari is basically worthless. I had previously bragged about this feature, and now it's gone?! BRING IT BACK!

  • Trouble viewing photos in full screen and editting

    I'm pretty sure that I uploaded some corrupted files into iPhoto. This action rendered all of my photos useless. I can't view them in full screen mode, and I can't edit them. I can see them as thumbnails though. I have them all backed up (uploaded in Picassa). I tried a whole bunch of things, including many of the things listed here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1425139&tstart=225), but to no avail. I figured if I got rid of the corrupted files it would work, but that didn't fly either. So I took a random picture and uploaded it to a now empty iPhoto and the same problem happened. I have not had any problems with my macbook until now. Any ideas?

    Uploading "some corrupted files" into iPhoto will not "render all of (your) photos useless".
    This sounds like you have a damaged database file.
    Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
    To create and populate a new library:
    Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
    Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
    Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
    Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
    When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
    In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Recently, Aperture has been giving me a big white partial box over the main viewer when I zoom in and edit...

    I have been using Aperture 3.3.2
    It is an 8 month old Mac Book Pro running OS X, and Aperture is about the only thing I use it for. The retouch feature used to be SOOO PAINFULLY SLOW that I took it into the Mac store, and they had to reformat my harddrive & reload everything.. That was due to my PC indexing everything and wouldn't stop. Took a lot of RAM.  Maybe this is due to the cup of coffee I spilled over my MacBook a few months ago? I really haven't wanted to admit it, but OK WORLD, IT HAPPENED!
    Also, it is crashing a lot when I am editing. Any ideas?

    You need to confirm that your hardware is properly functioning.  They can do this at an Apple store.  Have them check the memory and the drive(s), and ask them to check the CPU/GPU (I don't know if they can).
    Once you know that your hardware is good, move on to trouble-shooting your set-up and software. 
    How much RAM do you have installed?  How much free space in on your system drive?  Run Safari for a while and see if you have any trouble there.
    The white box is (afaik) likely an artifact of your mouse/trackpad cursor.  You shoudn't see it.

That caused an immediate crash of firefox and has done so everytime I try to open google maps. The window isn't open long enough for me to try and unclick that option.     I couldn't tell which of the many cookies was the offender, so I had to clear them all...which I know is going to mean I lost some convenience, but it was worth it. For future reference, is there a way to know which cookie is causing the problem?

  • Viewing modified google maps routes on iPhone

    I just discovered today that you can't see a map route you modified on the web via google maps using the Maps app on the iphone! What a bummer!
    I was hoping to use this to make bike routes for myself using google maps (you know how you can get directions on google maps on a computer, then you can drag parts of the route to different streets to modify the route), and then e-mail the route link to my iphone so I'd have the route via maps app.
    Instead, when I modify the route using google maps on a computer and send it via e-mail, the e-mail shows up in my iphone, I click the link, am taken to the Maps app, which re-calculates the route for driving. But the whole point is to view my custom route for biking! And there's no way to modify the route in Maps app (is there?).
    What's more, when I click the link to the google map in mail, it automatically takes me to the maps app. Is there any way I can make it take me to safari so I can see the map I modified? Since there's no copy/paste, seems I'd just have to memorize the lengthy url, which is ridiculous.
    Does anyone know of a good way to do this?

    I'm having the exact same issue. When I create a custom route on Google Maps (www.google.com/maps), point-to-point, and then force it to take me on back roads via the drag option it won't work, it won't even plot the course.
    Example:
    Home to point 1, point 1 to point 2, point 2 to point 3 and point 3 to home.
    It gives me an error saying, "End location not found"
    Really annoying! Fix it Apple.

    I agree. I liked the previous map app.  The version 6 app is powered by tomtom, I think.  No more street view. I don't care for the new overhead view when dropping a pin.  Plus, the current map app doesn't have the local points or data base that the google maps app had.  Too bad I can't go back to the old map app.

    wmf files is a MS Windows video file, you will need a tool to covert the wmf files to another file format OS X will read. Simply Google to find a converter you are interested in and use it.

    Most of the time for such kind of requirements it is generally prefer to have a seperate view for edit and that is being called using the plugs from the main screen.
    The flow will be like this:
    View 1 (main View having data, Fieds for editing are disabled)  -
    > Fires Plug to Edit view -
    > Edit View ( With all fields enabled which you want for editing).
    In kind of a design the main advantage is, you can directly keep the required nodes in the component controller and map these nodes in main view and edit view, both. Without even caring for any data flow.
    Data flow will be automatically be taken care by the component controller. The only one thing which needs to be handled is the UI elements enable and disable property. Because in the case of the main view you need to keep the disbale property of most of the UI element as True (as you don want user to edit anythign in this main view). In the edit view the disable property of same UI elements will be set to False, as used can edit any thing in this edit view.
    If you keep this kind pf approach one more added advantage is that you can pass various parameters in the plug function. So if you want to handle something on the bases of sone flag etc then you can pass those parameters in the plug method.
    However, as replied earlier, the decision is purely based upon your requirement. If the requirement is to show the edit screen as a Pop-up then you can help it!! Go with it..

  • Is there a way to get iCal to put the time of each event on Monthly view without going in and editing each event?

    When I enter a new event on iCal with the time, it leaves the time off of the Monthly view and in order for me to glance at the times of the day's events I have to click on each event or go into the event and edit it again putting the time on, for it to show.  Is there a way to get it to show without doing this?

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

    You can use Adobe's free DNG converter to convert proprietary raws to the universal DNG raw format. Here are the links:
