Offline Wikipedia too big to be installed (application "encyclopedia")

I bought the application "encyclopedia" (7.99 EUR) to be able to work with *Wikipedia offline*. Unfortunately I didn't read the critical comments of a few other users before I decided to buy this appl.
The program needs an additional download of the Wikipedia database, size 2 GB, via WiFi only. This sounds okay in first place, just reality is quite different: *DL speed is below 50 KB/s in otherwise excellent WiFi environment.* Day or night, after a couple of minutes the DL speed quite often slows down to even less than 30 KB/s, or the DL interrupts completely for unknown reasons. This slow DL was verified in an big Apple Store a few days ago.
With that DL speed it is virtually impossible to successfully DL the whole 2 GB DB. It would need hundreds of hours. So the money was wasted...
BTW: No answer to emails from the seller "Steam Heavy Industries". The website (more of a webpage) doesn't give any information about DL speed. It only informs that there are many offline encyclopedias available in many languages. Big business!
It should be possible to DL the DB via iTunes or via computer directly to be transferred to the iPhone via cable or local WiFi connection.
Do other users have similar problems with the DL of the DB?
Any ideas how to install/copy/DL the complete DB?

Sounds like their servers are not up to the demand they are getting. All you can do is raise it as an issue through the App Store.
Try as I might, I personally cannot see the appeal of this app. Aside from the DL problems and the huge bite it takes out of the available space on a device, surely the whole point of Wiki is that it is constantly being updated? The "benefits" of having it available when offline are far outweighed by the downsides. Better to go for a cheap (or even free) online version that DL's in a jiffy.

  • The browsers for my applications are much too big

A certain cat walked across the keyboard of my macbook pro and now the browsers for my applications are much too big.  I am unable to scroll all the way down.  i tried the standard "command +/-" but it isn't working.  Please help!   Here are two screenshots, the first in iMovie and the second in Word (i just installed the 2011 update but am unable to get past this screen because i can't scroll all the way to the bottom.)

no problem.  Also, if you go onto Displays in system preferences, you can select the box in the bottom left, which will then put a display icon in the top right so you can click it and quickly change the display resolution back if such a problem happens again without going into system preferences.

    Hi Mark.
I have the same problem, but it works when i set the windows settings for the font and icons to 100% instead of 125% (standard) which is not optimal.
Do you have an other solution?

I have created an ibook in ibook author and it appears in ibook on my Mac.  How do I get it on my iPad.  It is too big to email.

You can install MAMPon you mac (free web server, no configuration needed).
Put ePub file in Applications/MAMP/htdocs and you can download locally (quicker than Dropbox, Mega, etc...)
    On your iPad's nevigator type:
    http://mac_local-lan_IP:8888/NameOfYourBook.epub
You can see local IP on: System Preferences/Lan or System Preferences/Sharing
iPad and Mac must be in the same lan/wifi network.

  • Iphone 4s update stopped, then the backup was too big!

I was installing the latest update on my fiances iphone 4s. Then it stopped and I got some text saying the update wouldn't go. The phone was then locked with and I was prompted to connect it to itunes. Also hade a message about the simcard not being correct, that disappeared though. Then I had to do a backup and reset the phone. "Ok", fine I'll use the backup I just made - but no! Now the back up was too big! Bit above 14 Gb which I after som googling understand is more than "the basic" package? Anyway, I didn't have any recent backups so now I got the evil eye from my fiance as I write… is this solveable? What happened? Did the update get mixed into the backup thus making it a bigger file? The phone was almost full when I started the update…  I do have a backup from september which is abot 12 Gb. Can I use this somehow?

Well, the update was aborted. Can't remember the exact error message and I can't produce it again obviously. But what happened next was that I was prompted to connect it to itunes and restore it, there was this symbol on the screen with a wire going to itunes.
Now it's just telling me there isn't enough space to backup from the one I want. I know what folder it is in, the application, mobile sync, backup. That folder is more than 14 Gb.
I cannot be more specific I'm afraid… But I mean, the info is there, in that folder bigger than 14 Gb. I can access the pictures, look at every one of them… Frustrating…
    Haha! That's a good link!
    cheers!

    Hi,
When you have the browser open (Internet Explorer) then press the Alt key on the keyboard. It should show you the file options at the top..Then uncheck work offline and check..
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Can a file get too big to load?

I have a file that is HD and I've been editing it for about two weeks. Its about 2 hours long and I just started adding livetype titles as its nearly complete.
But this afternoon, I had to reboot my computer and now the file wont reload (gets to 47% then says "file cannot be loaded.")
Did it go corrupt? Or is it more likely that I've just pushed the file's requirements past my system's memory allotment?
Even today's autosaved files wont load (so I had to go back to a saved version from earlier this week).
I have 3gb of memory installed. Is FCE trying to tell me I have to install memory?
Either way, if the file get's too big for the machine, why wouldn't FCE have crashed? The file closed down with no problems and this is the second time its happened.

I'm using 3.5 HD and the project file is 4.5MB
I'm starting to fear the problem has to do with the livetype movie inserts. The application didn't even hiccup until I started adding my title-ing sequences -- especially one particular psd import that uses a transparent background.
I'm going to give your suggestion a true and report back, though...
    thanks.

Program too big to fit in memoryThis error is complaining about memory, not disk space. But I suspect that the problem is disk space. This is copied from the Window 32-bit installation instructions:
A Pentium 166MHz or faster processor with at least 32 megabytes of physical RAM is required to run graphically based applications. Forty-eight megabytes of RAM is recommended for applets running within a browser using the Java Plug-in product. Running with less memory may cause disk swapping which has a severe effect on performance. Very large programs may require more RAM for adequate performance.
You should have 120 megabytes of free disk space before attempting to install the Java 2 SDK software.

I have looked at the byte count, and it's exactly the same as specified on the download page. What could be wrong?

  • DBIF_RSQL_INVALID_RSQL statement too big

    Hi All,
We are on SAP R/3 4.6C (kernel 46D 64 bit pacth 2113 with last DBLS library, AIX 5.2, DB2 7.1 on z/os 1.4) and for a BW extraction we have the following dump:
"ABAP runtime error DBIF_RSQL_INVALID_RSQL, RSQL error 13 occurred.
The following message also appears in the developer trace:
B *** ERROR => dbtran ERROR (set_input_da_spec): statement too big
    B marker count = 1195 > max. marker count = 726."
For the OSS note 655018 the limit of marker count is 2000, but in the trace of work process we read 726.
    Many thanks for your help
    Bob

    Hi Bernhard,
thak you for reply. This is the dump:
    ============================================================
    ABAP runtime errors    DBIF_RSQL_INVALID_RSQL
           Occurred on     16.01.2008 at 10:29:04
RSQL error 13 when accessing table "EKKO ".
    What happened?
The current ABAP/4 program "SAPDBERM " had to be terminated because
one of the statements could not be executed.
This is probably due to an error in the ABAP/4 program.
    What can you do?
Note the actions and input that caused the error.
    Inform your SAP system administrator.
You can print out this message by choosing "Print". Transaction ST22
allows you to display and manage termination messages, including keeping
them beyond their normal deletion date.
    Error analysis
The SQL statement generated from SAP Open SQL violates a
restriction imposed by the database system used in R/3.
For details, refer to either the system log or the developer trace.
    Possible reasons for error:
o Maximum size of an SQL statement exceeded.
o The statement contains too many input variables.
o The input data requires more space than is available.
    o ...
You can usually find details in the system log (SM21) and in
the developer trace of the relevant work process (ST11).
In the event of an error, the developer trace often gives the
    current restrictions.
    How to correct the error
The SAP Open SQL statement concerned must be divided into several
    smaller units.
If the problem occurred because an excessively large table was used
in an IN itab construct, you can use FOR ALL ENTRIES instead.
When you use this addition, the statement is split into smaller units
according to the restrictions of the database system used.

  • Not possible to install applications in Nokia 6500...

I have some application that around 10Mb and i want to install to my N6500c but i cant. It showed that message "the size is too big".
someone let me know if there are anything i can do.
    thank you

The 6500 classic is limited to jar files of 1 megabyte or less (this information should appear in your manual and it is clearly published here in the "Memory functions" section).
A 10MB file therefore cannot be installed.

  • I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. I want to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere? Also is it worth just buying another external HD to back up

I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. However, it is not backed up, so I need a solution to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere for cloud products? Will it be cheaper/easier just to buy another external HD to back up my existing external HD? Thanks

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • The "other" memory section on my Mac is WAY too big.

    Hey everyone!
I know there are a LOT of discussions about this topic, but none of them really seemed to work for me. So the other day I got an error saying "Your startup disk is almost full". I immediately checked the storage section of "About my Mac", and sure enough, something like 100 GB were taken up by local backups. To fix this issue, I disabled local backups via this terminal command: sudo tmutil disablelocal.
I did a restart and checked my storage again. This time, it looked like this (and still does):
All of what used to be backups is now other. And the reason I have those 900 or so MB of backups is because I eventually turned those on again (with the reverse of the above command) in an effort to fix this. Out of options, I then went to the apple store, where they told me to just delete stuff that was too big. So I got a 1 TB drive and started copying and deleting stuff. The main thing I got rid of was a giant windows VM I had. And just to prove that something's wrong here, look at the breakdown of my files from OmniDiskSweeper:
If you do the math, I should have about 100 GB more free than I do now. I've tried:
Turning the thing off then on (you'd be surprised how often that works)
    Resetting the PRAM
Forcing spotlight to reindex the machine
Throwing the machine out the window (well, not quite)
What I think might be the cause:
This is a stab in the dark here, but possibly all those GB of backups tried to delete themselves and somehow corrupted and aren not called backups anymore by the system?
Just one more thing: I noticed that OmniDiskSweeper showed a volume I don't recognize. It's called MobileBackups. Maybe that has something to do with it?
    I'll appreciate your help.
    Thanks!

Although the guide is a little dated, a lot of the information there is really great and helps you track down a lot of files that are just taking up way too much space on your hard drive.
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
I just did this the other day on my Air running 10.9 and recovered around 50GB of disk space, so there is potentially a lot you can do. I suggest following the steps on this guide (to the T, don't want to mess anything up) and go from there. Don't delete ANYTHING that you are not aware of the function, and remember that searching for names of files is a great way to determine whether or not you need it. Some files that SEEM like junk and take up a considerable amount of space are system files that will either be replaced the next time you boot up or render you computer useless entirely.
For example, there is a file that saves the state of your computer just before it goes to sleep so that it can return quickly when you start up again, and that file is normally the size of the amount of RAM you have (I have 4GB of RAM, so the file was 4GB). After doing some research, this file will either be recreated if deleted, or your sleep mode will not be able to function properly if the file is deleted. So again, just tread lightly.
Also, there is an application I used to get rid of a bunch of duplicate files that I had on my drive called Gemini (http://macpaw.com/gemini), which I recommend using to clean up documents. Again, be careful, you don't want to go deleting files that you are using that the application mistook for a duplicate.
    Hope this helps!

I'm trying to open a 900kb Word doc (240pages) in Pages but get this error message:  Import Warning - A table was too big. Only the first 40 columns and 1,000 rows were imported.

    Julian,
Pages simply won't support a table with that many rows. If you need that many, you must use another application.
Perhaps the originator could use a tabbed list rather than a table. That's the only way you will be able to contain a list that long in Pages. You can do the conversion yourself if you open the Word document in LibreOffice, Copy the Table, Paste the Table into Numbers, Export the Numbers doc to CSV, and import to Pages. In Pages Find and Replace the Commas with Tabs.
There are probably other ways, but that's what comes to mind here.

  • I am having trouble with a video.  I have tried to copy it to a flash drive because it is too big to fit on a DVD, it says it is too large for the volumes format.  Please advise.

I have done many DVD's for seniors for graduation so I am familier with Imovie.  I have just finished a projec that is a combination of video, music and stills.  I shared it through idvd.  Now I can't burn it to a dvd because it is too large.  It is too big even for a two sided disk.  I have researched it and i find that blue ray would be big enough.  Does apple offer  blue ray burner?  if so, what is the cost?  I tried another route and took my external hard drive to copy it to a PC.  there computer wouldn't recongize my drive.  I am assuming it is because it is formated for apple.  I tired copying it to a flash drive and and it says that it can't be copied because it is too large for the volume's format.  Suggestions?   PLEASE!!!!!

Could the video be too big because of using too high a resolution?   480p is sufficient for a DVD.  the thread at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5868958?tstart=30
    may be of help.
Apple does not support Blue ray - you have to use a thrid party application like Toast.
To transfer the video to a PC you need a FAT-formatted hard drive (or of course a sufficiently big memory stick).
You could also go via a network, via the cloud (eg Dropbox) or with 'Wetransfer" or similar.
    Geoff.
