Offscreen Animation Action

Isn't it considered a bug when Keynote doesn't let you see the starting point of an Build?
For example, what if a Build (text or image) action starts off the presentation screen and moves in. This is a really typical scenario. But how do you edit the text in the text box if you cannot even see it off screen?
I think this is a huge flaw in the design of the View settings. There needs to be a View that allows centering of the slide in the middle of the screen so you can edit around the edges and beyond, such as elements that are off screen but enter though a Build action. Unless there is some setting I've overlooked, this represents a major flaw by the Apple developers of the Keynote editor.

I don't think it's technically a bug as it probably works as intended. However, Apple has a feedback page for users to send their feature requests.

Concurrent animation

Is it possible to have two separation animation actions happen at the same time? For example, I would like a graphic to zoom in (from 0% to 100% size) while it is following a motion path (or even just moving onscreen using the Build In "Move" effect) at the same time.
In PowerPoint, it is easy to do this sort of thing by selecting "With Previous" for the animation action(s) in question. In Keynote, I only see options for animating something "on click" or "automatically after build #".
I have seen that when using the Move action effect, you can add a Scale action to this and the scale action gets grouped with the Move action so that the two happen at the same time. (Both are Action effects, and not Build In or Out effects.) However, I can't find a way to scale from 0% to 100% in size when doing this. And I can't find a way to similarly group other animations together (for example, I can't seem to figure out how to group two "Build In" or "Build Out" effects together, or combinations of the two, etc.
Does anyone know if there is any way to sequence animations to happen "with previous animation" in Keynote?

Guess I spoke up too soon -- you can connect two separate elements' animations to happen with each other, but you can't put two build in animations on the same object (for example a scale and a move in) to happen together. So I'm back to the original question -- is there any way to have multiple animation actions happen on a single element at the same time?

Overlapping Transitions & Action Tree

I haven't used keynote for a transition-heavy setup in a while, but now I'm going to start setting up some custom slide shows for clients. At the moment, I'm trying to utilize the new animation abilities to create custom ken-burns effects to highlight areas of photos. Essentially, this requires the "dissolve" function to start at the same time that the "move" action occurs, and the second "dissolve" transition to end at the same time the "move" action ends.
In previous versions of Keynote, we could set build times to make this happen, but it seems we're only allowed to specify actions to happen "on click" and "immediately after build x." Am I missing something here, or has apple disabled this ability? I know iMovie can create this effect, but I'd like to be able to control exact positions and move times.
If you know a way around this, or can give word that this is currently a deficiency with no solution, please tell. To save you a post, yes, I just got the Keynote update. Kudos to Apple for giving us more control with animation actions, but taking out timing would be a big step in the wrong direction.

I've tried to utilize only actions to create this Ken Burns effect, and I can get pretty close, except for the very last bit. Here's the method so far:
1. drop picture on black slide and resize to full-resolution
2. add opacity action, set to 100
3. set up move action
4. add opacity action, set to 0
5. select image and set opacity in the graphic pane of the inspector window to 0
This seems to work just fine as long as you set the slide transitions to nil and have it run automatically. The one problem is the last opacity action (step 4). I would have the move action occur 'with build 1,' which is exactly what I was looking for. However, this ability is not allowed when trying to link the section opacity action with the first action, on a delay. It's showed as a non-grayed out option, but won't let me select it. At this point, I'm so close to getting this working I can taste it.
Anyone know why I can't select this action transition option? That sounds like a feasible enough question for these forums. Please answer soon!

How to add animation to a button

Hello,
My DPS page below contains a series of button that each have 2 actions(Goto URL{navto://} and Sound media) which work great.
However, I would like to add a simple action so that the button image "jumps up" when it is clicked.
What is the best way to achive this and can the animation action be added in addition to the existing actions for the button? I'm looking for the simplest method, as I have not used Edge or Flash.
I'm using Indesign CS5.5
Any help greatly received.

Interactive Environment - Animation + gotoAndPlay

I'm having some difficulties with an interactive flash movie I'm trying to create. I have a 'shop front' graphic that I created for my website. This is one in a number that I have completed, and the others I have succesfully animated in Flash. The basic idea of the shops are to give the user the ability to rollover an item, have a large version of the price tag appear (and disappear on roll out) and turn the item itself into a link (an invisible button on top of it) to a thread on the forums that gives further details about the item. I have done this with a previous shop and attached the .swf so that you may better understand what I mean. (Note that it still has some issues with the price tag rollover, which I intend to fix.)
I have this new shop that I would like to incorporate new animation into. I've also attached the .swf (note if you need the .fla to further see what my project looks like I can get that to you - it just won't allow me to upload it) and it might be easier to follow my explanation if you view this. The graphic consits of two sets of scales and a cauldron. First off, I would like the cauldron's ladle to move continuously, from the point of the movie's loading. However, I also have animated the golden scales on the bottom shelf to dip down depending on which dish the user rolls over. I did this in a separate movie (which I also attached) and imported it into my shop front movie. I wanted the same rollover animation action to happen in this bigger movie, however I encountered difficulties. I am very much a learning Flash user and I can't comprehend the issue... but I did include the individual frames of the golden scale movie in the shop front movie so that it could still work.
However, my problem is that now, when I rollover the scales, the cauldron ladle will move or change position while I am rolled over the scales. This is because I am using the gotoAndPlay command to navigate throughout the different parts of the movie, so that I could animate the two sets of scales.
I hope this all makes sense. Could someone please tell me an easier way to have the scales animated (and still be able to rollover and have a another image appear (the price tag) while it is animating) and also the cauldron ladle stirring the entire time?

High Fidelity for PPT actions

I am using Captivate 8, and according to all video tutorials, I should be able to click on high fidelity to transfer over all of my PPT recordings, hyperlinks, actions, etc. However, when I am on the main screen to import my PPT, it only gives me a link option. There is no box to check for high fidelity as there is in the video tutorials. Any other suggestions? I have a 47 slide PPT that is full of animations, actions, voice recordings, etc., and I would really like them to transfer over.

I believe the High Fidelity option is only available for PowerPoint projects saved in PPTX format.
So my guess is that you are pointing to a PPT and not a PPTX.

Components will not resize correctly in Catalyst

I am completely new to Flash Catalyst (any and all versions). I am currently using Photoshop CS5.5 to design and Catalyst 5.5 to import and translate into a flash project. I recently picked up a job creating an interactive application for a college campus. I have attached my two project files for anyone who can help to view to see what is wrong. I have also attached inline screenies for those who cannot/will not download.
Here is my problem: I created the attached PSD in Photoshop with what I thought were the correct layers and groups/folders. I am hoping to achieve the following effect: when a user rolls over the purple buttons, multiple similar copies of that button that are initially hidden beneath the visible one popup in sequence above the rolled over purple button.
Ex. State 1:
Animation/Action Sequence to the following:
The purple popup objects will have their own text content and will be buttons themselves that a user clicks to change to a different state with more specific information.
Not only am I unsure of how to create such animation/action sequence, my purple components (whether I actually convert them to components in Catalyst or not) will not resize correctly. NOTE: I did click the resizable option when importing the PSD into Catalyst. The following effect occurs both ways. I add constraints to all objects by selecting all, right clicking, and choosing add constraints to all; the following occurs when stretched inwards using the resize test handle:

When viewed using CTRL+Enter, the application is nowhere near resized in the browser window. I must be missing something, especially being new to Catalyst. I tried flattening the image in Photoshop, which obviously allowed the image to be easily resizable in Catalyst and the test browser window. However, I cannot use my separate elements when flattened; flattening defeats the purpose of Catalyst if I'm not mistaken.
Any guidance?

Hi Martin - Those are really good questions! I did check and the image is uploaded. I assume I can see the image in my one browser because of the cache since I could not see it on several computers that I had never pulled the site up on before.
And actually I have it working now. Nancy had a good idea to check to see if I saved it as CMYK instead of RGB. When I went to go open the file on my computer Photoshop and Fireworks had an error in opening it. They had a problem opening the one I downloaded from the ftp too. It just looks like somehow the file became corrupted! Not sure how, but that seems like what the problem was since I have a new image up there now and it's working fine again.

Flash video is where it's at (IMHO)...
Since your company does e-learning, why not create some video
tutorials or demonstrations. This is very time consuming so it will
keep everyone busy. Plus there is the ability to shoot these
yourself with fairly reasonably priced equipment, then all the time
to edit and add effects digitally, and then merging the video
content with Flash.
There are 18 million different ways to incorporate Flash
video into new and exciting money making ideas. Now why don't you
send my your site's fla souce since I just gave you a million
dollar idea.

How to create an ad banner using Flash Catalyst

This should be an easy question to answer...I've been able to create a variety of ad banners using Flash Catalyst but none of the online tutorials show how to link the ad banner to a URL...i.e. when someone clicks on the banner. I don't like the idea of having to create a button + Go To URL (on click) because the button doesn't appear on all screens/states, etc.
Is there a way to turn the entire project into a button without losing the animation action? i.e. so that no matter what state the banner is in, if someone clicks on it, they go to the URL?

Thanks for your advice. It's for our own sites, so we can accept the overhead.
The animation is simply fade in image, fade out image, fade in text message, fade out text message, fade in next image, etc.
So, when you say "they are instead wrapped inside a single custom component", I understand it conceptually but need a few details:
1. Does this mean I first create the custom component (before doing anything else)?
2. At what point to I import/load my Photoshop file with all of the layers?

Converting a layer on the main timeline into a movieclip

I'm not really sure how to properly describe this so please
bear with me.
Say you create an animated action on your main timeline with
a symbol. Then you decide you want to take that action and put it
into a movie clip so that it migrates across the screen. Since it
is already on your main timeline, how do you take that layer, and
convert it into a movie clip?
I hope I've described this clearly enough.

Select all the frames on the layer, right-click on them and
select copy frames. Create a new symbol. Right-click on the first
frame of this new movieclip and select paste frames. Go back to the
main timeline and delete the layer.

Dreamweaver or Flash Catalyst ???

I have almost finished designing my website on Photoshop. My design looks similar to www.psyop.tv, with main menu on the left. Now I am confused between Flash Catalyst and Dreamweaver, which one should I pick to move ahead with the development.
I have two requirements:
1 - Menu...I think I can easily create that kind of open and close menu interactivity in Flash Catalyst rather than Dreamweaver or do you think it is possible in Dreamweaver?
2 - Audio player...I need an audio player to showcase my work done for every artist. Just like on Psyop.tv if you click on any thing in the main menu, a separate page comes with the artwork and links for video player. It could be one audio player with playlist or more than one player for different files. If I go for Flash Catalyst I get very limited controls over the player.
I was thinking that I go with Dreamweaver, because it will solve my player problem. I can embed an external player like Bandcamp, which is very cool. But what about the main menu...Can I create a similar menu like psyop.tv on Dreamweaver ?

Dreamweaver is web authoring software (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc..).
Flash Catalyst is for making flash animations (action script).
Use Photoshop for images only.
Use DW to build your web site.
Use Flash Catalyst for optional flash animations.

Mouseover Actionscript 3.0 thingy for Buttons?

I've got a Problem: I wanna do an animated Button in flash.
I'm new to it, and i'm done with the "graphical" work now. But I've
got a Problem with the Actionscript now, I know how to set it up
that the Animation of the Button will start to play when the mouse
is over the Button (with that .addeventlistener MOUSE_OVER thingy),
but i don't know how to stop it. It loops.
Unfortunalety, all tutorials I read are with AScript 2.0.

"Inv_btn" is my invisible button.
As you can see, the reason why it loops is really easy.. I
only added a play command, not a stop command, and the reason why I
did this is because i don't know how to do it different ^^. I
wasn't able to find a "don't loop the animation " action :(

Captivate 6 Crashes opening PC files on Mac

We work with both PC and Mac. I upgraded to Cap 6.0 a couple of months ago, but found it quite flakey and stuck with 5.5 while we cleared our pipeline of work (needed reliability in the face of deadlines). I've just returned to 6.0, and am still finding real issues. If I create a file on the PC (Windows 7) and open it on the Mac (OS X 10.8.2) we get crash with the error message 'A fatal error has occured and the application is being terminated[...]'.
Can anyone give any advice? As things stand I'm really regretting having paid for this upgrade. Any help will be appreciated.

These are files created from new as 6.0 in Windows, being opened on 6.0 in Mac. (my experience of opening 5.5 in 6.0 is a whole seperate issue for another day!).
I've done the test as you describe and have the same 'Fatal Error' result.
The content is a straightforward elearning pack, powerpoint style, no recordings, no audio, but quite a lot of animation/actions and variables. Thanks for your quick response, any futher help appreciated.

Question about a camera/web-cam

Hi,
Does best buy sell any camera/web-cam/security camera that can record to your computer or phone so you can watch it in the morning?
I want to see what my cats are up to during the night when I wake up, if they are being naughty or nice.
Preferably something not that expensive.
A motion sensored one would be good also if they sell any of those.

Will the room be well lit, or totally dark? Many cameras don't work well in the dark. The better ones have an IR or illumination light. In extreme low light, this is my fav camera that records with minimal light assistance. The video is stored on an SD card that you can load onto your computer.

SWF loaded into MainNav SWF - Rollovers & Links Don't Work

Hi all,
This is probably a very basic question!
I have a Fla file with Text and Movie clips in it. The Text
is animated when rollover occurs and thumbnail images click and
link to the full size versions.
It works when published (Say "LatestText.SWF").
But when I call it from my Main Nave FLA/SWF, upon loading
the Text.SWF, the rollover anim doesn't happen and the picture
links don't work when clicked.
I have the latest flash player installed and the actual
weblink cursor appears as if the SWF acknowledges everything is
working, but nothing dynamic actually works.
Any Ideas? THANKS ALL! Much appreciated!

I'll try to flesh it out, although I don't think there's need
for any code behaviours as they all work fine - until the info.SWF
is loaded into the main.SWF.
So i'll try my best to flesh this out:-
I have a Navigation FLA which publishes to SWF (at the moment
Allow access to Local Files - tried network).
This Nav.FLA is the main bulk of the website, it has all the
links and window panes.
I have a downloaded window pane style component which is an
autoscroller (in case this could be the problem).
I can load my info.SWF's straight into the container, by way
of an Actionscript Anim Frame (1) and when the Nav.SWF is tested or
published, it indeed loads in the smaller info.SWF no problems and
scrolls around beautifully,
The Info.SWF's I'm creating is just basically embedded
dynamic text, with a few movie clips that have Behaviours when
clicked or rolled-over.
These Behaviours do not seem to work when the Nav.SWF's
window pane loads in the Info.SWF - they APPEAR clickable (mouse
pointer changes to hand) but nothing clicks and THEN works. The
rollover animations (actioned via behaviours from LABELS - not
frame numbers) also do not work?
Any ideas from those that know to those that struggle would
be greatly appreciated! It's the first time I've encountered a
problem with my Flash website that I can't seem to find an answer
to in all my tutorials and books!
