Offset subtitles from a stl file

Hello,
I tried to search the forum but found one related thread regarding offsetting subtitles from an imported stl file. That thread (somebody complaining that they couldn't select and move two or more subtitles in dvdsp 2, still not possible in 4 btw) suggested using stl edit. I had purchased STL edit 1.4 but Micheal Lofquist of Guishen stopped development after releasing v2 due to deminishing interest.
Alas Stl edit 1.4 doesn't seem to work very well with tiger, and v2 is not for sale anymore. Google so far hasn't brought me any alternatives mac-wise
To cut an already too long story short, is there another way to offset subtitles in dvd. Except doing them one by one. The way you deal with subtitles after the've been created or imported in dvdsp seems to be very archaic. The UI resembles FCP but lacks just about every functionality FCP has.
My last struggle with subtitles in dvdsp dates two years back and cost me a night of sleep. Spend that night in copy/paste ****. Now I'm spending half a day just trying to figure how to do this...
Sorry for venting, wanna get some real work done '

Hello Steve,
thanks for your informative reply. Stl edit 1.4 doesn't let me save files anymore alas. And I asked Micheal Lofquist from Guishen if it still possible to purchase stl edit 2. But he hasn't replied so far. As the product is discontinued I can't blame him. I'm surprised that there wasn't enough interest in his product since it seems such a necessity when working with stl's and subtitles. Oh well.
Thanks for the offer. Really appreciate it. Might take you up on it but I'll try to work it out with the subtitling agency first. Maybe Michael Lofquist will respond soon and let's me buy stl edit. Or maybe he will tell me it was bought by apple to be implemented in dvdsp 5
Thanks again

  • Imported Subtitles from and STL file are missing German characters.

I have had an STL subtitle file prepared by external company.
It works beautifully and imports into DVDSP fine. The problem i have is that some German characters (ö and ü) are not displaying and instead i get other characters.
I have tried changing language input source in system prefferences but to no avail.
    Can any one help? Please

they are nice people, but they kept sending changes that conflicted, going back and forth over the same items. Turns out two different people were doing the reviews and they didn't agree on wording of the theft warning. Took six extra months to do. Oh, and make sure you have a printout when you start to work. Often you won't know when the accents are missing.

  • Extracting a subtitle from a VOB file

OK, as much time as I have spent looking for the way to do this, I could have just watched the darn DVD while editing, BUT...
I'm remastering an old public domain movie in FCP. The titles... (this is a silent film, so the "titles" in this usage are the printed words on the screen that the actors are 'saying'. I'll use the word "intertitles" from now on.) are in French and I am producing this for English speakers.
I have a DVD of the same movie with English subtitles (from the actual DVD subtitle track) and I am using FCP to replace the French intertitle cards with English intertitle cards. (Is this clear as mud?)
Instead of having to watch the DVD in real time to get to the next intertitle card, it would be nice to extract the English subtitle track from the DVD and simply have it as either a text or image file that I could have up on my computer monitor, and just page or scroll to the next title.
I've looked at every freeware that claims to do this but nothing seems to work. (DSubtitler seems like it wants to, but the output file looks like this:
    1
    00:00:00,230 --> 00:00:00,250
    2
    00:00:06,230 --> 00:00:12,710

ffmpegX wants me to re-encode the entire film in order to give me a subtitle, and even then, I'm not sure it would be what I'm looking for.
Even a quicktime file with a screen burn of the subtitle would suffice.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!

    yes, clear as mud...
honestly, unless you're doing this sort of job routinely, the fastest bet would be to open the english subtitled movie in dvd player, set your fast-foward speed to 16x, and just scrub thru the whole movie and jot the titles down in textedit when they pop up.
it just seems like you're trying to do more work than you have to.
i realize that's not exactly what you're looking for, but i hope it helped.

  • DVD Studio Pro - Subtitles - save to STL file?

Does any one know if you can save subtitles on a subtiltle track to an STL or any othe tyype of subtitle file?

Thanks!  I'm new to subtitling, so I thought I needed to use a .stl file.  The Rich Text file works just fine and eliminates the backslash!

  • NT 4.0, LabVIEW 6, Error 4 (END OF FILE) when trying to seek to byte offset 4096 (from start of file) when the file is larger than 2 Gig

If I try to seek (or read) with the position mode wired and set for START, I get error 4 (END OF FILE) if the file is larger than 2 GB. I'm only trying to move the file pointer 4096 bytes, not trying to seek or read more than 2GB, but I get the error if the file is over 2Gig.
Instead, I have to do reads, with the position mode unwired, until I get to the place in the file that I want to be.
    Is this expected behavior?

    Hello,
LabVIEW File I/O functions use an I32 value to store the size of a file. This means that we are limited to ~2GB file sizes when using the File I/O functions in LabVIEW. This explains why you are seeing odd behavior when trying to read to the end of the file, since this is causing the byte count to exceed ~2GB.
I hope this explanation sheds some light on the situation for you. Hopefully the workaround (repeated reads) is not too much of an inconvenience.
Good luck with your application, and have a pleasant day.

  • How to convert FCP subtitles created in Text to EXPORT as one .stl file for broadcaster

I created about 300 subtitles in Text, one version for English and one for German, that included narration and on-screen dialog, for a one-hour film I produced. An exported QT file creates a burned-in subtitle. However, the European distributor wants the film without subtitles and wants the subtitles as a .stl file (with the TimeCode for start and end of each subtitle text), one for English and one for German. I can create a QT file without subtitles. But I could not find a way to convert the FCP text into a file.
    a. In FCP, I see no option to export to create an .stl file. How does one go about making the .stl file?
    b. Some software I found like Subtitle Extractor creates an .stl file from an existing track in DVDSP's subtitle tracks, like S1 or S2, etc. I also see no such option in DVDSP to export to create an .stl file. Does this mean I would need to re-write all the subtitles in FCP into DVDSP? This means re-writing over 600 subtitles from FCP to DVDSP! This will take months. Any faster and effective solution? DVDSP is a solution only if this Subtitle Extractor software works! Any feedback on this? I tried to run a quick test in DVDSP but no .stl file was created and it resulted in an error.
    c. I need to identify which subtitles are narration, and indentify the person speaking the dialog for the .stl file. Do I do this on the stl file or FCP (assuming there is a way to convert the FCP work)?
Using FCP 7.0.3, Mac OSX 10.6.8, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Mhz, 500 GB drive

I've worked with title exchange pro and I thought it was great.  The software author was very helpful when I had a probllem.    I used it in a different way (converting a pre existing stl file into a subtitle track in fcp - a series of text clips with the appropriate timings and placement that I could copy into a sequence - to proof subtitles created by a service before using for a digital cinema print), but I'm pretty sure it'll do what you want.

  • How to convert .stl file into .xml file. Subtitles to IMPORT INTO FCPro

I have a subtitles file which was created in dvd studio pro. I exported that file and made a .stl file (which can be opened with TextEdit).
I need to import that file into FCP to then make a quicktime file w/subs to be exported.
I'm trying to use TitleExchange which tells you you CAN convert .stl files into .xml (FCPro type of file) but when I try to import the .stl subtitle file into TitleExchange to be converted to .xml I get the following error:
    Can't make "" into type boolean. (-1700)
    Can someone help?
    Thanks!!!

  • Exporting Subtitle from DVD Studio Pro

Is there a way to export subtitles from DVD Studio Pro or Is there a tool somewhere that will generate an STL file from a DVD Studio Pro subtitle stream?
    Thanks for your help!

Yes, other than the manual -- which I have exhausted. It gave me the coding for a text-based caption, and the coding for a graphic, but not the coding that would put both on the same clip (same time value).
However, I can manually go into the subtitle inspector and add whatever element (the text or the graphic) each with its own offsets, and have them appear flawlessly together. I am convinced there must be coding that generates this effect I can use in the STL file, but I have found nothing on the web, nor any of several downloaded manuals (including pp. 456 - 460).
    Any advice?

  • Importing subtitles from an outside vendor

Here's a list of questons from our supplier.
what file format you’ll need from us: .tif or .bmp?
    - navigation (script file) – .son, .sst, .stl or any other
    - color scheme for subtitles:
    o text
    o edging
    o aliasing
    o background
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    G5 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi Brian
You don't need them as .bmp or .tif's (though you CAN have them as either I think). Just ask for them as .stl as this will happily import into DVD-SP. As for the other info you can actually easily change that using soemthing like Text Edit once you have the subs or indeed you can select one of the subs (once imported into DVD-SP) and change things like edging etc and then Apply to Stream.
Basically an .stl file is a text file with Timecode in and out references and the text of the subtitle. You can then import this directly inot DVD-SP. SP then "creates" the subs when you do a Build. If you have them as graphics then the .stl file has a timecode in and out and a reference to the relevant graphic and it's location. If you want yur subs to have a grey faded background box (as some subs do to lift them from the background) then you will have to have graphics
Usually when we create subtitles we don't worry about all that stuff like text. aliasing etc. and just make sure that the subtitles are correctly timecoded.

  • Multiple weight font selection when using STL file importing...

I am aware how powerful the manual editor is for DSP4.2, but unfortunately a lot of the editing for my subtitles needs to be done outside of DSP. So I came across a little bit of a problem...
When using a multiple weight font, like Kozuka Mincho Pro (and many others), there are several weights, and some don't even have a "Bold." As an example Light, Thin, Roman, Heavy, Black, etc.
So, using the STL method of importing, how does one specify a font AND weight that does not correspond to a "Bold" version? i.e., setting "Helvetica Neue Bold" does not bring that weight up when specifying "Bold = False," and you can't possibly get "Helvetica Neue Black," under any circumstances. I've attempted to get around this, but all I get is a message saying that the font is not found, and that the default font will be used. Is it even possible to do this?
Hand entering and altering kanji in DSP's manual editor will be a nightmare, if I can't figure a way around this (the STL file is re-loaded dozens of times for placement issues during the project, meaning manual edits would have to be re-done every time).
Hopefully the next version will allow the user to edit the .rtf document with styles and fonts and import them as styled text the way it appears. Multiple fonts per line, so easy integration of various symbol fonts can be dealt with, etc.

Nope, using "$FontName = Helvetica Neue Black" does not work. And you can't even do anything close to that with fonts whose weights are specified as W3, W5, W7, etc.
I found another snippet buried in the new manual that states something to the effect that the name must be spelled exactly as it appears in the "Font Panel." If this is so, then you can only access two weights from any font, just like working with good old-fashioned windows...
So, unless there is a DSP specific trick for the STL format, I'm going to guess it's not possible.
And I cannot re-compile fonts with new names and data, since most of the fonts I will be working with, with this issue, are full Kanji Unicode fonts, and we would have to purchase a font-editor that, IIRC costs about a grand. I think the SysAdmin would frown over both aspects of that... ^_^

  • Paid job: convert .stl file into .xml to import into FCP. Anyone?

I need someone to convert my two .stl files (subtitles) exported from DVD SP and convert them into files (.xml?) compatible with Final Cut Pro. I need to Import these files into FCP and burn a Quicktime file with subtitles.
I can pay someone (not millions!) to do this, since I have no clue and anything I was suggested doesn't work.

  • Moving Subtitles from one project to another

To make work on a project more efficient, we started a project on one computer with only the film track for subtitling, whilst authoring the DVD on an other computer, another project.
So, how do we move the subtitles created in one DVDSP project into another project?
I cannot see that the subtitle stream creates its own asset, which could be imported into the authoring project, and DVDSP refuses me to copy the subtitles to past them into the "real" project and I find no export options which seem to apply.
    Humbly seeking help.

Sorry Per - there is no direct way of moving the subs from one project to another, or exporting them directly as an asset. The very best advice is to construct subtitles outside of DVDSP as a text file which you can then import, edit, alter exactly as you want. I suspect it's beyond that point for you now, though!
However, if you use the app 'Subtitler' then you can export an item description of your DVDSP track and extract the subtitles from it in STL format.
Another thing to do is to export the track from one project as an asset and import it into the new project, but then replace the video and audio elements with the correct pieces that you need to use. It's a lot more messy than simply having a text file for the subs, but could get you out of a hole.

  • Subtitles from ntsc to pal

I'm building a project in ntsc and pal and it's translated into 7 languages. Is there a way to export subtitles from the ntsc project to the pal project? I'm able to export the track description, convert to .stl, but then it won't import into pal. Help!

    hey there:
i guess there's no easy answers for the matters in this thread as it has no replies for more than a month.
i got a related problem - and actually i didn't DO the subtitles in encore, but imported a text file of them. i had to spot in encore, though, as my import didn't contain in/out time codes.
& now that that's all done in PAL, i'll need to do the same for NTSC. i actually figured out a kind of a rudimentary workaround for this (or, so i thought) by ripping the subtitles off the finished PAL dvd with an app called subrip & porting to subtitle workshop that exports the encore format. but unfortunately whatever i try to do converting between different time code formats/frame rates, the resulting NTSC time codes are out of whack.
the above, though a long story, does contain two core questions:
    - how to export subtitles & their time codes out of encore?
    - how to convert above export back & forth between PAL/NTSC?
    any pointers much appreciated... cheers!
    best,

  • Questions on 3D picture control and STL file

    Hi,
I am currently working on a project in which I load an STL file to vizualise a 3D object (see attachment). I have several problems and questions.
    1) I would like to execute rotations (X,Y,Z) on this 3D object. Unfortunately, Labview executes only one rotation and I don't know why
    2) If I load several objects, is it possible to create links/joints between them? I saw the example with the robot arm provided in the Labview examples, but I don't understand where and how the joints are defined.
    3) Is it possible to import an image (png, jpeg,..) on a scene display? I would like to visualize a graduation to see the number of degrees of rotation of my object.
    Thank you for your answers

Thank you so much for your post on our forum.
I created an example based on the VI You send Fact is that we need to use relative rotation. With absolute the previous rotation is cleared and the new rotation is done from the zero point. With your example this means that you first do the Y rotation and immediately the X rotation is done resetting the previous Y rotation. If you swap these two rotations you will notice that only the Y rotations works because the previous X will be reset.
As said I made an example based on relative rotation so the rotation will be done from the current position. I used the rotate object.vi and used a event structure looking at the value change from the x or y control. The function will be executed when these value changes occur.
