Offsite Backup Server

I have got a client who wants to set up an offsite backup server for SAP B1. I would to know how to do it. May you please help.

Hello,
Accordingly to [http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152531(SQL.90).aspx|http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152531(SQL.90).aspx] there are 3 possible scenarios in order to implement Replication using MSSQL Server:
1. Transactional Replication
2. Merge Replication and
3. Snapshot Replication
I am afraid that I have to say that nothing of the above is supported as described in note [942923|https://websmp230.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMSZ3PTU4ODAwMDAr)/bc/bsp/spn/smb_searchnotes/smb_index.htm]
I think it has to do with the internal links SAP Business One uses within a DB, which might get destroyed when using replication functionality of MSSQL Server.
Kind regards

  • How do I create an Oracle 10g offsite backup

Total size of the datafiles that make up the tablespaces of the DB = 1532121.6875 Mb
This size will eventually grow to about 6-7 terrabytes
I used the following query to determine the above size:
SELECT sum(bytes/1048576) FROM dba_extents; I saw this question poseted on another site
QUESTION POSED ON: 15 August 2007
I recently handled a project whereby we have many site servers at various places in our country and there is a central server in Delhi (India). My project is to take a backup of the local server and post that backup to the central server via Internet. I chose the RMAN (Recovery Manager) approach. Using that approach I can back up the database and connect to the remote database. But I can't find how to post the backup to the remote server. Please give me guidance regarding this project.
    This was the answer:
    EXPERT RESPONSE
Basically, there are two options to have RMAN back up to a remote server. One, back up locally and then FTP the backup to the remote server. Two, create a network file share from the database server to the remote server. Have RMAN back up to the network file share. It will think the file system is local, but in actuality, the file system is in another location.
Currently a level 1 incremental backup is done at 10:00PM every night to the array (this takes approximately 1 hour to be completed). I am interested in doing a full hot offsite backup of the DB to a disk on another server.
Can anyone tell me how would I be able to do this using RMAN and/or backing locally and then FTP'ing the backup to a remote sever.
Can anyone also confirm if the calculation for the size of the DB is accurate?
( I did the calculations based on what I saw at this site and this site)
I would like to do this in preperation for some firmware upgrade that our Sun support would like to do on the array, I would like to implement a script (or maybe use RMAN) to do a nightly offsite backup. I would still need to do the DB backup to the array...but what files do I copy off the array (to the remote server) for an offsite backup of the DB.
I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks for the help, I took a look at the script. Suppose however I didn't/couldn't do any modification of the Oracle RMAN settings (without voiding my support contract). Could I simply copy the necessary DB files to a remote server, would I be able to do a restore (if necessary) from those copied files?
Like I have pointed out before, currently an incremental level 1 backup (to the array) is done nightly at 10 (and it takes approximately 1 hour)

  • Best method for incremental offsite backups?

I currently have multiple Macs and a Windows PC running XP.  I also have a 1TB Time Capsule, so all the Macs are backed up via Time Machine.  However, I want to have offsite backups as well, so I purchased 2 matching Seagate GoFlex 3TB drives.  My plan was to backup up verything, then have one drive offsite and another at home away from the computers.
However, it takes a very long time to move the drives from machine to machine, backing up all the files.  I would like to find a good solution to do an initial backup, then do incremental backups after that.  It would also be great if I could hook the drives into the network, so I didn't have to move them around to the various computers.
So, I have a few questions:
Can I hook up the external drive to the Time Capsule via the USB port, point Time Machine to the external drive and do a backup that way?  If so, will it screw up my regular Time Machine backup to the Time Capsule?  Will it just do an incremental the next time I hook up the external drive to the Time Capsule?
If Time Machine is not the answer, is there third party software to do it?
How do I handle the Windows machine backup?
Is there a better option than doing incrementals?
Keep in mind--I've tried cloud solutions like Carbonite and Mozy, and neither worked for me based on the large multimedia files I use.  I could never upload fast enough to make it practical.  That's why I went to external drives for offsite backup.   I also don't want to leave the external drives hooked up--just hook them up long enough to do the backups.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would suggest CrashPlan.  They offer a mode that allows you to use your own computers (or even your own local devices) as the backup destination.  CrashPlan runs on Windows and Macs.
I currently use CrashPlan to backup my laptop to a in house Mac mini.  I think that as long as your Macs and PCs can see the Seagate GoFlex 3TB drives, either attached to the TimeCapsule, or attached to any Mac or PC in the house, then CrashPlan on any device at home should be able to incrementally backup each system.  And if the GoFlex is attached to a system in the house that is running a CrashPlan server, you could even use CrashPlan to backup a laptop while you are away on vacation or business trips.
You will be using your own local (hopefully faster) home network, which should be much better than the Carbonite and Mozy options which require pushing your data out of the house using your generally much slower up-link broadband connection.
NOTE:  CrashPlan (again the free option) can specify a computer that you control (yours, or a family member, or friend) can be used as the backup target.
An alternative for Macs ONLY would be SuperDuper (shareware) and/or Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware), which do very good incremental backups.  Generally both are used with direct attached external disks, and they make bootable clones.  HOWEVER, both of them can be used to backup over the network.  In the case of SuperDuper, you would mount the remote volume and then backup into a .dmg container file.  For Carbon Copy Cloner you can backup over an ssh connection to a directory subtree on a remote system.  I think it should be possible for Carbon Copy Cloner to use a container file (similar to SuperDuper).
Sorry, but I do not know what backup utilities are good on Windows.
Finally, you might be able to roll your own using rsync.  In fact Carbon Copy Cloner uses rsync as its copy engine, and the rsync buried in CCC is generally the most up-to-date rsync for Mac OS X.  Not sure if rsync is available for Windows, but if it is, then that might be something to think about.

  • Informal poll: breaking raid as offsite backup

this isn't specific to os x server, but i was wondering what other people think about breaking a mirrored raid (external or internal hot swap) and swapping in a spare as a means of providing easy offsite backup.
thanks for any feedback. i'll post my thoughts in a bit but am looking for others' take on this.

The following discussion has a lot of good information you may want to read:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6266460
I've seen this method mess things up a few times, so I wouldn't rely on it. RAID1 was intended for redundancy in case of drive failures, not for backups. There are several things that can go wrong when you break the mirror, especially if the system is live.

  • Recently backing up my ipad onto my macbook, which is the backup server for all of my gadgets.  This includes all my photos and tons of music.  The macbook said it could not backup the ipad because there was insufficient disc space to do so. What now?

I have a macbook operating OSX10.6.7.  Recently backing up my ipad which had lots of photos from a recent vacation.  I use this laptop as the backup server for all of my gadgets so it has thousands of photos and tons of music.  It just told me that it couldn't back up the ipad bc there wasn't enough disc space.  I was afraid that this would happen eventually.  What next?  Newer laptop with more space?  I'm not sure what files I could sacrifice to free up more space as most of these are important.

What size hard drive do you have in your MacBook? The cheapest options are, a larger internal hard drive, or an external drive. Or you could get a cheap desktop PC and network to it for storage. I've got one that lives in the hall with 3 Terabytes (That's 3000gb) of storage.

  • How do I restore a Windows Backup Server backup recovery partition?

I'm trying to test restoring a backup from our real server on a temp server.
First, I was surprised it can't do a restore to a smaller drive because the original server is only 1/3 full (it wants to restore all the empty bytes too).
Also it appears it wants to see that target partitions are already created.
It wants to restore recovery to an EXISTING recovery partition and OS to an existing OS partition all with exact sizes.
What if the old system died and I had to go to something new?
Do I have to preinstall 2012 R2 on a bare drive so it creates the partitions?
I've been down this path before, if it's not byte for byte match (offsets and all) it won't boot.
I'm pretty sure I could restore just the OS partition and then do a Windows Repair which would move the master boot record onto the OS drive. But that seems wrong.
What's the proper way to restore?
Is Windows Backup Server to limiting?

    Hi,
    1. When trying to recover a partition, it requires a same or larger target partition. If you only backup data, there is no size limitation of the target partition.
    2. We need an operation system to do the recovery. However you can perform a Bare Metal Backup so it could be restored without operation system - but it may force to backup more than partition C.

  • The host is not authorized to connect to this Backup Server

    Hi experts,
I'm trying to connect to a remote backup server S2_BS running on VM2 from a data server S1 running on VM1. When I issued following command in isql
    1> SYB_BACKUP...sp_who
    2> go
    Msg 7221, Level 14, State 2:
    Server 'S1', Line 1:
    Login to site 'SYB_BACKUP' failed.
It failed to connect to its SYB_BACKUP (i.e. S2_BS is configured for SYB_BACKUP in this case).
And I got following error in the error log of S2_BS:
Jun 23 14:48:53 2014: Backup Server: 2.24.2.1: The host '10.43.13.204' is not authorized to connect to this Backup Server.
Jun 23 14:48:53 2014: Backup Server: 2.6.2.10: Login information unavailable.
I can ping VM2 from VM1 without any issue:
    $ ping 10.43.13.204
    PING 10.43.13.204 (10.43.13.204) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from 10.43.13.204: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.035 ms
And have entry for S2_BS in /opt/sybase/interfaces on VM1:
    S2_BS
            master tcp ether 10.43.11.19 5002
            query tcp ether 10.43.11.19 5002
And S2_BS is running correctly on VM2.
    I'm running ASE 15.7 SP110 on both VM1 and VM2.
Could someone please let me know how to fix this?

  • Powerbook G4 as Media/Backup Server

After a lot of research I still haven't figured out a plan that will suit my needs.  Im hoping someone here may be able to help out.  I have an old Powerbook G4 1Ghz with 1gig RAM running OS 10.3.9.  I don't use this machine currently, though it runs perfectly fine...minus the facts that it must be plugged in to operate and the OS is so old I cannot update any applications.
I'd like to re-purpose this machine as a media server and a backup server for my current Macbook Pro.  My idea is to have two duplicate external Hard-drives connected to the powerbook for redundancy.  I will store all of my media on these drives, as well as point time machine to these for backups for the MB pro.  I want AppleTV to use the powerbook as its source library.  My first problem is that iTunes on that machine is too old for AppleTV, and the OS is too old to upgrade iTunes to a workable version.  So I know I will have to update the OS to something more current.
The second issue is how to setup the backup redundancy.  In addition to any new backups from the MB Pro, I also have a ton of data/media Ive acquired over the years that I want to be able to access regularly.  Ive already been burned on a couple drives in the past and having at least two copies of everything is a must.  So what is the best solution for the backup discs?  Since this system is more than just a backup (it needs to also play the media files for AppleTV), does it make sense to do a RAID of some kind, or can I get by with just mirroring two duplicate external drives?
With all that said, what OS should I upgrade to, and how should I set up the redundant storage?  I apologize for the long-windedness and appreciate any feedback.  Thanks.

Whew, I wouldn't use Time Machine at all, nor Raid, more on both later.
For OS, how much RAM does it have?
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
        * Built-in FireWire
        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

  • Easiest way to Configuring backup server in oracle 8i

I want to make a backup server i.e database for my existing database in different server. For example: My existing server completely crashed. I am having backup of os level complete backup only. Please note that not useing export file. Please suggest.

It totally depends on your business requirements. If business requires something then you have to do it even though it is hard through the technology.
Oracle does provide the following two main things to ponder on.
    1) Oracle Replication.
    2) Oracle Data Guard.

  • Cluster and Backup server

    Hello guys;
I want to use a cluster oracle server and another server in another place as a backup server to copy the database on line from the cluster server.
If I want to make the backup server a primary server if something wrong happened to the cluster server.
what the steps should I do? or if there is any document to read I'll be thankful
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
What do you refer by saying cluster ? If you want to have a HA (High Availability) with Active/Passive cluster then you can go with 3rd party cluster vendor, like HACMP from IBM, ServiceGuard from HP and so on. If you want to create this with Oracle technologies then you are talking about Oracle RAC One Node. Of course you always go with Oracle RAC (Real Application Cluster) if you want to have a Active/Active cluster. These are in terms of cluster and High Availability.
There is another point if you want to create a DR (Disaster Recovery) of you primary database then you would consider implementing Oracle Dataguard.
Oracle has a rich documentation for blueprints and best practices, my sincerely advice is to get familiar with it:

  • Best way to do offsite backups of iMac?

I have a new iMac -- the first Mac for a longtime Windows user...
One of my normal practices with the PC was to create an offsite backup each month, which is stored in my desk at work. In the past, I've always used DVDs for the backup, but now that my iTunes and digital photo libraries are growing, that's getting to be too much of a chore and requires too many disks to do easily. So, I'd like to start doing my offsite on a portable hard drive I can store in the office and just take home once a month for the backups.
I'm already using Time Machine to back up my iMac to a G-Tech external hard drive, but for the offsite backup, I'd prefer to only back up my iTunes library, photos, and documents. I don't see a way to do that with Time Machine.
What's the best way to have only these folders backed up to an external hard drive?

ecd1211, Welcome to the discussion area!
I'd prefer to only back up my iTunes library, photos, and documents. I don't see a way to do that with Time Machine.
You can customize Time Machine to only do the folders you want.
In Time Machine preferences, Choose Backup Disk, then click Options. A list of locations that are backed up appears.
To add a new "do not back up" location to the listing, click the "+" button below the list, navigate to the location you want to exclude and click Exclude.
To delete a listing, select that listing and click the "-" button.
Click Done to return to Time Machine preferences.
Drag the Time Machine OFF-ON slider to turn Time Machine on or off.

  • Development System Backup - Best Practice / Policy for offsite backups

Hi, I have not found any recommendations from SAP on best practices/recommendations on backing up Development systems offsite and so would appreciate some input on what policies other companies have for backing up Development systems. We continuously make enhancements to our SAP systems and perform daily backups; however, we do not send any Development system backups offsite which I feel is a risk (losing development work, losing transport & change logs...).
Does anyone know whether SAP have any recommendations on backuping up Development systems offsite? What policies does your company have?
    Thanks,
    Thomas

    Thomas,
Your question does not mention consideration of both sides of the equation - you have mentioned the risk only.  What about the incremental cost of frequent backups stored offsite?  Shouldn't the question be how the 'frequent backup' cost matches up with the risk cost?
I have never worked on an SAP system where the developers had so much unique work in progress that they could not reproduce their efforts in an acceptable amount of time, at a acceptable cost.  There is typically nothing in dev that is so valuable as to be irreplaceable (unlike production, where the loss of 'yesterday's' data is extremely costly).  Given the frequency that an offsite dev backup is actually required for a restore (seldom), and given that the value of the daily backed-up data is already so low, the actual risk cost is virtually zero.
I have never seen SAP publish a 'best practice' in this area.  Every business is different; and I don't see how SAP could possibly make a meaningful recommendation that would fit yours.  In your business, the risk (the pro-rata cost of infrequently  needing to use offsite storage to replace or rebuild 'lost' low cost development work) may in fact outweigh the ongoing incremental costs of creating and maintaining offsite daily recovery media. Your company will have to perform that calculation to make the business decision.  I personally have never seen a situation where daily offsite backup storage of dev was even close to making  any kind of economic sense.

  • Backup server desinging or deployment

    Hello guys,
I have 1 backup & symantec mangement server in 2 different sites with 4 nics each (2 for management & 2 for backup traffic diferent Vlan
Since this is fresh installation, in backup server we have configured 2 subnets192.168.1.x(internet) and 192.168.2.x.(backup) and added in the routing table to direct backup traffic to 192.168.2.x. for backup as we cannot keep 2 gateway in 1 server.
Since, i have not set gateway for 192.168.2.x, we are not able to contact backup server from remote site.
But, it works when i set the gateway, which i should not be doing.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    ndraj

    Hi,
A computer should never have two default gateways. According to your description, I'm not quite sure about your network toppology.
As what I understood, the server connect to both 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x, then subnet 192.168.2.x should be reachable even if you do nothing on routing table.
If you add routing entry via "route add ...", it doesn't mean you have two default gateway. Only specific network will be send via this specific interface. In this situation, your provisioning should be correct.
    Hope this helps.

  • Which Backup server version is required for Sybase cumulative dump/load

    Hello,
To perform cumulative dump and load (supported from ASE 15.7 SP100 and up) with 3rd party API, what backup server version is needed?
We use backup server API version 2.1, and sybackup.h does not have any definition for cumulative dump. This header file only defines DATABASE and TRANSACTION as command_type, so when "dump database foo cumulative" is issued, command_type becomes UNKNOWN.
Since we support all the ASE versions from 15.0.3 and up, we ideally need a backup server API that works for ASE versions from 15.0.3 and also works with cumulative backup. Is there such an API version?
    Thanks,
    Ali

What I'm told is that the version wasn't bumped because the changes shouldn't really affect the API functionality; the API module would still receive a byte stream and be able to store and return it regardless of the command_type.
However, you can easily modify your sybbackup.h to reflect the new command_types.
Replace the current command_type definitions with the following:
#define TRANSACTION 0 /* transaction log dump or load */
    #define DATABASE 1 /* database dump or load */
#define CUMULATIVE 2 /* Cumulative dump to dump or load */
#define UNKNOWN 3 /* Pre-API SQL Server in use. Backup Server
                         has received a DUMP/LOAD command from a
SQL Server which is not passing the
                         'Command Type' toBackup Server. Therefore,
the Command type can not be determined. */
#define DELTA 4 /* Delta dump to dump or load */
