Offsite backup strategy, Alternating Backup Devices For Taking Offsite

I've managed a Windows SBS 2003 server for some time and part of our backup plan has been to alternate backups to different hard drives and that one of the drives off site each week. Windows Server 2012 R2, seems to have a different configuration of adding
hard drives to a pool of drives for backups. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how best achieve my objective here? Yes I know we can the off site backups but at this time we prefer do it this way. More than likely the off site backup will be added later
but since it's a start up business we're trying to trim the fat right now as best we can. I was hoping to use Windows' backup instead of third party software but am willing to hear comments and/or suggestions. Thanks
Vern

Hi Vern:
I think the article below is written back to front, sort of, but if you scroll down a bit you will see that rotating external drives will work very well.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj713501.aspx
I suggest three drives and daily rotations.  That way "yesterday" should be out of the building when "today" and "tomorrow" are in the building
to be switched out.

  • I want to use this thing as just a backup device for windows computers but don't have a Mac - can I use this in that way ? I am not interested in using the wireless portion jut wired ethernet.

I have multiple iOS devices and a couple of Windows XP Professional PCs, but I want to get a Time Capsule to use just to backup the Windows PCs now.
In the future I want to get a Mac and get rid of the windows PCs and then I will use Time Machine. I just want to know if I can use the Time Capsule now for wired backups ??? I plan on using Norton Ghost and don't need Time Machine nor do I have a Mac to use it. Should I forget this idea ? I plan on buying a Mac in the future and use this drive in the regular Apple manner. Please help !

The format of the disk is a Mac format. but that is irrelevant in a NAS device, as long as it offers SMB.. ie windows file network format.. you don't have to worry in the least how the files are stored on the drive.
But you cannot partition a TC.. it is as it is..
I have some iOS devices in addition including an AppleTV. Could this TC serve them as well as the Windows XP Pro PCs without having a Mac in my inventory ? (No time Machine.)
What are you expecting to serve to the iOS devices.. they are completely dumb.. they don't even know what the file system is without an APP.. and there is no Apple Format apps only SMB.. which is kind of interesting.
They are designed to work with iTunes.. but the TC is not an iTunes server strangely as lots of non-Apple products manage to make their NAS into ITunes servers. You can place the iTunes library on the TC but we don't recommend it due to the TC having no automated way to back itself up.. again unlike every other NAS out there. You can manually backup the TC via the USB.. it is slow and can only backup the whole disk.. even if you backed up the whole disk yesterday.. it has no ability to do incremental rsync or any other intelligent backup.

  • Can we connect a Mac and PC to Time Capsule and use it as common backup device for both machines ?

    .

Yes, but you use Time Machine on the Mac although there are alternatives, TM is great tool.
On the PC you need to use a suitable backup software. Many many available.. choose one.. anything but Microsoft's own backup which is a total pain.

  • Can I use iPod as a backup device for Time Machine?

I have tried to set up Time Machine using my iPod as the storage device without success. When I tried to set up Time Machine it would not recognize the iPod as a valid storage device. Can anyone tell we why this is not allowed or am I doing something wrong.
    Thanks. All answers welcomed.

I don't know if it is allowed or what you are doing wrong but I can tell you why it would be a bad idea. The iPod hard disk only runs briefly to load data off into flash ram and then stops. The music you hear is being played from flash ram. Time Machine use would be a lot more intensive than this. This causes two problems:
    (1) I have read that iPod drives are rated for a life of 20,000 hours versus 750,000 for a desktop drive but worse is
    (2) The iPod is only designed to dissipate the heat created by these short bursts of use. If you run it more than this you risk doing some damage due to overheating.
I installed Mac OS X on my iPod once to see if I could. It worked but it also got very hot.
I thought there was a technote on this but I can't find it.

  • SCORE: alternative input devices for score symbols, etc.

I discovered something really useful to me today, and I'd like to share it with all you score guys (though this has application for non-score operations also).
I've been on this quest recently for a dedicated, alternate USB device to invoke key commands that normally require holding down modifiers. F'rinstance, on my system, CNTRL-SHIFT-A adds an accent. But with this "holy grail" device I've been looking for, this key combo would be invoked by a single keystroke. However, either the hardware I've been looking at (such as PI Engineering's X-Keys) or software (such as QuickKeys) don't or won't work for me for various reasons.
But I do have this little $25-$30 Kensington 10-key keypad sitting here. It's basically a device that duplicates the function of the 10-key keypad of the standard Apple keyboard. And I found today that it's "1" key can be programmed to invoke a different key command than the "1" key on the Apple keyboard's built-in 10-key keypad. Furthermore, the above-the-Q "1" key can be programmed for a third function.
So now I've got my 10-key keypad on the left, mouse on the right, and as I select notes with the mouse I can hit a single key on this keypad and add accents, staccato, slurs, crescendi, and other things, all with a single keystroke. It's pretty cool, thought I'd share.

For anyone interested in this, the brilliant answer given to me by Doug over at LPH is that you can transpose the Staff Styles which changes the chord symbols as well...

  • Is there an alternative device for Time Machine Backup?

    Hello All,
I am stretching my dollars when I am saying I am going to buy Airport Extreme or Time capsule. Do you have any recommendation if any of the wireless routers out there in the market can do this trick. I would greatly appreciate if you can give me a response.
    Thanks
    S

A $99 AirPort Express + an external hard disk drive will cost less than a Time Capsule.
The Express includes most of the features of the more expensive Extreme. Though the Extreme supports an external HDD you can only use a hard disk attached to your Mac for Time Machine. Either way, you will need an external backup device and an inexpensive hard disk drive offers the cheapest cost per unit storage.

  • Support for Canon M80 backup device

I have a Canon M80 backup device that I have used in the past with a mac that had OSX 10.4 but I have since purchased a new computer that came with OSX 10.5 which does not appear to support the M80. Problem is that I just got back from 7 weeks of shooting and I need to import the pictures in to aperture but the OS is not mounting the backup device.
Does anyone have any tricks that I could try to make this work
    Thanks

    Thanks John,
Very interesting.  I already tried to request a change using the feature request form but it wouldn't let me log in for some reason.
I just now tried the first thing you suggested (changing the driver to "legacy") and surprizingly it works well enough to recognize my camera as a capture device now.  Unfortunately, it does not show video in the capture window but it is capturing HDV video.  I am good with that!  I really want to see how well the software burns high def footage to standard DVD's.
    Thanks for your help!

The backup files for my devices are saved to my internal hard drive. I have a small internal hard drive and would like them to be saved to an external drive. How can I change where iTunes automatically backs up to?

This has nothing to do with iTunes as iTunes provides no way to move or relocate the backup files.
A search of google or the fourms would reveal ways to create a folder link to relocate the physical location where the files are stored.

  • What commands used for taking backup of oracle database using BR*Tools

Can somebody please help me urgently to know what are the commands used for taking backup of oracle database using BR TOOLS.Also specifythe commands in detail which can be used for taking backups of oracle database ,Online Redo log files in databse using BRBACK tool,Archiving of offline, redo log files using BRARCHIVE, and Restoring a Database using BRRESTORE tool Commands(Plese specify the commands with their Syntax used). Also specify the commands with their Syntax which are used for taking backup of oracle database(online,Offline redo log files) into Tapedrives using BRTOOLS commands.
Thanking You for helping (in advance).

    Dear Ashish,
BRBACKUP / BRARCHIVE calls the operating system command to copy the files.
Simple approach to get the commands is as follows.
    1. Set the BR_TRACE (as given in the SAP note 29321) and run the command for which you need to know the OS / SQL commands.
    2. This will generate the log file with the trace information. This trace has the information of the commands used by the job you have run.
    Hope this helps.

Rman is so feature rich and yiou can integrate your third party backup software with rman to take backups, there is nothing to worry in your case, this is very much in the reach.

  • Is the iCloud a backup tool for your computer?  How do I get my data back -- off the iCloud?

Is the iCloud a backup tool for your computer?  ---- Apple care suggested using iCloud for a backup to my documents.  I do not have an iphone, ipad or laptop.  Just an iMac.  Nothing to share the data with.
Now I am unable to access some of my documents on my computer and saving documents is cumbersome because it always wants to save it in iCloud, not my computer.  The documents I am unable to open are my old MS-Word.  One is a macro enabled word doc.   I am using os x mountain lion.
After over an hour chat with apple care, the issue is not resolved.  I did not have more time to resolve the issue today and it will be continued next week.  Per apple care, I do not have any documents in the iCloud however I am almost at the free capacity with  contacts and documents.
My question is -- If I purchase backup from a clould provider - other than apple, back up my files in documents in their cloud (make sure I can open them) and then delete the link to iCloud.  Would I preserve my data? Has anyone tried this?  I am open to suggestions.
    Thanks,

Is the iCloud a backup tool for your computer?  ---- Apple care suggested using iCloud for a backup to my documents.
Not really. You can store "Documents in the Cloud" but this applies only to documents created by Pages, Numbers, Preview, Keynote, and Microsoft Office documents created on your computer stored in iCloud's "iWork". Within that limited purpose, iCloud works very well.
My question is -- If I purchase backup from a clould provider - other than apple, back up my files in documents in their cloud (make sure I can open them) and then delete the link to iCloud.  Would I preserve my data?
I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by "purchase backup from a cloud provider" but if you're considering a service such as Carbonite, I don't advocate any of them. To back up your Mac, use your own backup device - Time Capsule or an external hard disk. It's inexpensive and reliable: two elements essential for a backup strategy, that no subscription service can offer.
