Often when Firefox is closed and reopened ALL the tabs and tab groups are missising. FIX!!!!

For reasons that are unclear to me I sometimes close Firefox and later re-open it. In some cases ALL the tabs and tab groups are gone. Today it opened in MSN.com and ALL tabs were gone. I put a lot of pages on these and have NO WAY to find them all again. If this continues and you cannot give me a way to recall them I simply will have to go to another browser. It always happens when I need them most and don't have time to even track down one. It completely upsets my day, week, month whatever!!!.
Is there a way to get them back? Someone asked a similar question and was never given a useful answer.

I've begun having this problem as well. Reviewing the above, I seen no errors that I' making. A few weeks ago, without being aware of an update to Firefox, it began behaving differently than it has for years. I've always had it set to open to an empty tab, now it often opens to the 'Firefox Home Page' (which I've never used)... this despite resetting my opening page to "Show my windows and tabs from last time" (upon troubleshooting the 'home page issue' I found that the opening page had reset to FF Home somehow. I store a lot of pages in tab groups and having them disappear is a major bummer since they're news articles I'm waiting to copy.
Also... I run CCleaner weekly and I know that will erase the group tabs I've stored so before running it I have to store those URL's another way. Does anyone know what I can uncheck in CCleaner to keep those tabs?
Thanks.

  • I was able to set Firefox 3.5 to reopen all the tabs which were closed when exited Firefox. I cannot do it with Firefox 3.6.

    I use Firefox 3.6.2 on a 2009 MAC Pro using OSX 10.6.5.
Before upgrading to Firefox 3.6 I was able to configure Firefox 3.5 to reopen all the tabs which had been closed during exiting Firefox prior to reopening it.
I am unable to configure Firefox 3.6 to do the same.
Now, when I open Firefox it always opens with one tab with my homepage. It would be much more convenient for me to have all the tabs which had been opened to reopen. When I change a plug-in in order to the change to take effect I have to exit and reopen Firefox, thus losing all the open tabs.

If you use [[Clear Recent History]] in Firefox 3.5 and later to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox then restoring tabs from the last session ("Save & Quit" or "Show my windows and tabs from last time") doesn't work.

  • I shut down firefox one day and when i started it back up all the tabs i had open from last session are still there.never used to be like that now every time i open the browser there are about nine of them..how do i prevent this?

there are 11 tabs open when i open firefox v 6.01.and they are all from a previous session a couple weeks ago..

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • I would like to know if it is possible to close the firefox 19(windows 8) and when i open he could save all the tabs?

    help please

Right-click on a Tab and use '''Bookmark All Tabs...'''
Then went you want to open those tabs as a group, right-click that folder and select '''''Open All in Tabs...'''''
Save those bookmarks as long as you need them, and delete the folder when you don't need it any longer.

  • There used to be a dropdown next to the arrows for going fwd and back through pages. It showed the last several pages visited. I also miss the option at closing that allowed you to reopen all the tabs you closed with. Can we get these features back?

    What more do you need?

Firefox 4 will ''always'' save your tabs when you quit. To restore your tabs the next time you start Firefox, choose "Restore previous session" from the history menu, or press the "Restore session" button on the default Firefox home page.
If you still want to have Firefox prompt you when quitting (like it did in Firefox 3.6), you can enable some preferences in the "about:config" screen:

  • When firefox is closed and all I see is desktop, if I look at Task Manager, processes, Firefox is running and utilizing about a gig of memory. If I try to open firefox a box comes up saying firefox is running and must be closed first?

This appears to have begun happening about the time of the Plug in container, but that is a guess. I do experience more firefox crashes now though. I just closed every item on my computer, was looking at desktop on screen, hit task manager then processes and FireFox is still running (as is plug in) along with other processes.
This is a bit perplexing. I am not an IT expert, but not computer illiterate. Any help will be appreciated

You have old versions of Flash and Java plugins, yous should update them to see if that solves your problem.
You can get Java from http://java.com/
For Flash I prefer using the manual installer, for details see http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html#main_ManualInstaller

  • Can someone help me when Firefox closes randomly it removes all the cookies and cache, and I am not able to restore lost tabs...?

For a while now Firefox has randomly shut down for reasons unknown. Sometimes windows reports the error but not always. When I start Firefox back up again, it does not restore my tabs. Also as an added bonus it deletes the cookies and cache, and I don't know why. Furthermore this occurrence has become more and more frequent. Just in the last hour along before writing this complaint, Firefox crashed three times right as I switch users, but not every time I switched. I am a taboholic, addicted to tabs, sometimes 70+, and this is the final straw. This frequency became more and more prominent a few days ago. When it first crashed, Windows was kind enough to let me know of the error which first occurred one to two weeks ago. It has become the very bane of my internet surfing. Someone please help, or I will have to renounce my allegiance to Firefox and switch to the dark side that is Crome.

<blockquote>... or I will have to renounce my allegiance to Firefox ...</blockquote>
There is no citizenship oath involved in using Firefox, it's a piece of software.
Look, if Firefox isn't generating any crash reports, you more than likely have an operating system or hardware issue. If Firefox is generating crash reports you can retrieve that information and post the report numbers here.
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes#Getting_the_most_accurate_help_with_your_Firefox_crash
Type '''about:crashes''' in the URL bar and hit Enter.
Click the hyperlinks to bring up the Crash Report pages and copy'n'paste the URL of each of those reports into the message box here. We'll see if we can help you figure out what is causing those crashes to happen.

  • "Close Firefox - Error Message -. Firefox already running, but not responding -.." A real pain - Firefox worked much better before all the updates!! How do I fix this?

This pop-up appears anytime I attempt to close Firefox and immediately open another browser, etc.
Suspect it is add-ons related. Never had the problem with "older" version of Firefox.
It is a real nuisance, almost makes me go to Explorer!

Try to wait a bit longer (up to 1 minute or maybe more) as it can take some time for Firefox to close completely.

  • Firefox 7.1 does not save the tab groups

    i have windows 10 and firefox 7.1

'''azizy.aris'''.....I have done EXACTLY what you have said and perhaps it has helped others but it has NOT helped me. Could you perhaps think of anything else that may be causing this??? I was saving them for awhile but all of a sudden it stopped. Do you think it's because I have the Firefox v. 4 Optimized for Yahoo!? I don't remember if it worked prior to me updating to the version for Yahoo or not. Any help you can give me would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

  • [DATA LOSS] I closed the Tab Groups and all my tabs dissapeared. How can I recover the tabs in Firefox 26? Would you please just delete this feature?

Thank-you in advance for reading all of this.
A slip of the mouse in trying to return to the left-most tab caused the tab groups feature to take over the window. I completely failed to comprehend what I was looking at and closed the thing by clicking the x because I damn sure didn't want what I was looking at. Undo close group? Of course not, I didn't want a group in the first place. Hey! My tabs are completely gone now! So in just a few steps all of which seemed innocent, I have lost all but ten of the tabs that were open, and those were only the most recent ten (and actually older tabs would have been more valueable than newer so insult on top of injury).
I don't think increasing the number of undoable tab closures is the answer. I think getting rid of the tab groups feature all together is the best way to go. I seem to have lost all the tabs I had open, irretrievably, and some of them had been open for WEEKS so they can't be reopened from history.
The tab groups feature is a data loss bug. Please remove it from the UX completely. If you have to figure out a way to grandfather people who actually have a tab group, fine but don't further vex me with it, please.
The reason this catastrophe has occurred is that your feature, was so discoverable that I activated it by mistake, and the UI after that had to be learned on the spot, yet was too complicated to learn. You really should withdraw it until you can figure out how to keep the UI for it from causing data loss such as I have experienced this morning.
Also, there may be other questions on this feature which are from a certain point of view the same as this one. It's hard for me to tell for sure. None of them had a true resolution so that's why I posted this one, also I'm seeking a specific fix, removal of the offending feature.
Why remove the feature? Because if I allow in my discussion the possibility of retaining it, it will stick around in its present and dangerous form until your team is done bikeshedding the new form it should take. Instead I want you to delete the feature and then require its champion to convince you that a new incarnation won't cause data loss before you allow it back in.
Fellow users, if you know of a way to recover all 50 lost tabs from an "undo close tab group incident", I would be grateful for that advice, but I would still believe the feature should be deleted. Some of the tabs have been retained for months so digging them out of the history is not practical.

I am not 100% certain but I am fairly sure development of this tab feature has ceased and it is likely to be deprecated. I am even less sure what the replacement will be.

I have not tried this and am not even using Windows at present but the tabs groups are stored as entries in the sessionstore.js files. Firefox has such a file plus sometimes numbered copies and a backup copy. Firefox will have re-writen these files but I suppose there is a posibility the Windows OS may have kept copies.
    * see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Sessionstore.js Note the files are kept within the Firefox Profile
** Firefox Button -> Help -> Troubleshooting [open profile] (or some thing similar) is one method of locating the profile.
Find and backup any current sessionstore.js file. Consider also bookmark or otherwise recording anything you have open. Now find any previous versions and try putting them in Firefox's profile before restarting it.

  • Can I set up a new window to open without all the tabs from the current window opwning?

I have a new computer at work with what must be a new version of firefox. I use multiple windows to do my job. When I open a new window, all the tabs from the current window open in the new one. I am wondering how to configure a new window to open with either a blank page or just my homepage?

I restarted Firefox and changed the homepage settings a to a different choice and back to the desired page then restarted Firefox again. This eliminated all the initial tabs from opening from opening in the new window. I am not sure how all the pages were cached or what I should have done but I no longer have this issue.

  • When in full screen, the tab previews are blank

I'm using windows 7, fully updated. I've enabled "Show tab previews in the windows task bar". And when I'm in full screen mode, the tab previews are just a solid color instead of a preview of the corresponding tab. Happened once then went back to normal.

You are probably inadvertently swiping to another full-screen app. Are you using a magic trackpad? Does this happen without you touching anything?

  • When closing firefox with multiple tabs open, how can you make it keep all the tabs when you reopen firefox

  • When I open a new windox in Firefox 3.6.10 on Windows XP, it opens not only a new window, but all my existing tabs reopen in the new window too--how do I fix this?

Whenever I open a new window in Firefox, it not only opens a new window with a new tab, it also opens all my existing tabs a second time in the new window. This has been happening for several days. Closing Firefox and rebooting doesn't solve the problem.
A related problem is that if I close all tabs and close Firefox, then reboot and re-open Firefox, all the tabs that were closed re-open too.
This is new behavior in Firefox in my experience.

Firefox opens the home pages in a new window, so if you want to open a new window blank then you need to set the home page to about:blank
You can check the startup setting:<br />
Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my home page" | "Show a blank page"
