Oh dear, I think I just screwed up my disk image. HELP!

I just got, several hours ago, a snow iMac G3 (OS 9.0.4), went home, connected it to the emac via firewire, and turned on the imac and pressed T.
the in the emac (OS 10.4.10), I created a disk image from the folder in the imac that has all the stuff in it (ALL of the stuff. its the only item on the root diretory). then I repartitioned the imacs HD four ways: one for the stuff that came on it, one for Ubuntu, and one for my deceased ibook( clamshell OS 9.2.1), and the rest free space.
then I mounted the disk image to make sure it worked, it did. then I went to the restore pane in Disk Utility, dragged the disk image to the sources box, and the partition onto the destination box. then I pressed restore, and it failed.
but I though, 'oh yeah, in 9 or lower, you could just drag system folders around and boot from them. so I went to mount the disk image, and now it says "no mountable file system" this really *****.
I figure I have two options:
1. recover the data from the disk image - hard
2. recover the data from the hard disk - even harder
help? anyone?

maybe I screwed up by having a disk image smaller then the partition?
but how would that affect the disk image? it was compressed, so doesn't that mean that it is read only, ie locked?

Also now it says i have t o erase and sync because my ipod is synced with another library. I still have all my songs and playlists on my ipod so how can I just restore my ipod library to my hard drive and have that be my itunes library that will sync with my ipod?

  • Works, just one problem, make disk images non read only

    I have a script that enables me to drop a file onto it and will ask for a text. It will copy the file and the text inside a new disk image.
    However the created is read only, i would prefer it if i could edit it's contents.
    The code is given below:
    global variable1, selecto, diskName, tempfolder, thepathp, xx, pathp
    on open {}
    my openp()
    end open
    on openp()
    set thepathp to path to desktop
    set pathp to POSIX path of (path to desktop folder) as string
    set variable1 to ""
    tell application "Finder"
    set selecto to selection as alias
    set infor to info for selecto
    set diskName to name of infor
    set diskname1 to diskName as text
    set john to count character of diskname1
    set xx to characters -john through -5 of diskname1 as string
    set tempfolder to make new folder at desktop with properties {name:xx}
    set thepathp to thepathp & xx & ":" as string
    my serialnumber()
    duplicate selecto to tempfolder
    my makeimage()
    delete tempfolder
    end tell
    end openp
    on serialnumber()
    tell me to activate
    display dialog "Enter the Serial Number:" default answer "" buttons {"Cancel", "Ok"} default button "Ok"
    copy the result as list to {the log_message, the button_pressed}
    if the button_pressed is not "Cancel" then
    set fName2 to xx & ".txt"
    set myFile to open for access file ((thepathp as string) & fName2) with write permission
    write log_message & return to myFile starting at eof
    close access myFile
    end if
    end serialnumber
    on makeimage()
    set selecto to thepathp
    set pathp to quoted form of (pathp & xx & "s" & ".dmg")
    set pselecto to quoted form of POSIX path of selecto as string
    set variable1 to "hdiutil create -srcfolder " & pselecto & " " & pathp
    do shell script variable1
    end makeimage
    Merry Christmas and happy new year.

    Hi Richard!
    Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!
    I don't know how much I can help but maybe you need to make a disk image first then convert it to get your results instead of creating the disk image in one step? In the "attach" function you have the possibility to select read/write. And interesting comments "about overriding the decision to make read only." (See man hdiutil under attach)
    But this is just a thought...for what it's worth?

  • I think I just lost my whole music library, help!

    Hello everyone! First off, i'm in my late 60's and have worked in maual labor my entire life. I'm really trying hard to increase my knowledge of technical devices. I own a classic iPod, 80GB, model #MB029LL and version 1.1.2 PC. I'm also running windows on my computer. (Gateway)  4+ years ago, I spent weeks adding over 2,000 songs to my iPod, from CD's. Shortly after, major and limiting health problems occurred and my iPod sat in a drawer for 3 years. During that time, my computer fried and the hard drive was toast. Health is much better now, and we have a new computer. So all my songs were on my iPod and i was able to connect it to iTunes. I was going to get help via apple support but they wanted $29. Being the stubborn man I am, I decided that i could figure out how to transfer all my songs from my iPod to my iTunes account. I back up my iPhone to a iTunes page so i thought this was the correct site. I tried to transfer the songs to iTunes and i ended up getting rid of all the songs. I'm completely dumbfounded and I'm ready to accept help. I really hope I haven't lost everything.
    So my question is, is there a way to retrieve all 2000+ songs and put it back on my iPod and the iTunes account? I appreciate anyone's suggestions in this matter. I'm no spring chicken, but I desperately want to understand and keep learning.
    Thanks in advance,
    philipfromwichita

    I think I just reset my macbook pro and i lost everything. Can I take them

    If by reset you mean you wiped the disk and reinstalled it, your only hope is a backup unless you had some things stored in iCloud. You could get the iCloud stuff back.

    Hi wellsfar,
    Which version of Adobe Reader you are using?
    Is it showing any error message?
    A screenshot of the error would be more helpful.

  • Hi, i think i erased the utility folder of my macbook and now every time i try to open it the computer just freezes...? help!

    hi, i think i erased the utility folder of my macbook and now every time i try to open it the computer just freezes...? help!

    Hi
    This sounds like a job for Disk Utility ... but that's located in the Utilities folder ....
    Fortunately, there's a spare copy of Disk Utility on the setup disks you should have received with your computer.  You need to boot the computer from the setup disk, then find Disk Utility. Inside Disk Utility, "mount" your hard drive and run Repair Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Good luck

    My MAC MINI looses the wi-fi connection to a Belkin N wireless router when it goes to sleep or shuts down.  I have to re select the network when re starting or waking up the computer.  I think this just started with LION.  My iPod and iPad have no problem remembering the wireless network.

    Thank you BGreg.  That is what I have been doing, and then it works just fine.  I think it was doing the same thing in the previous version of Lion.  I may be incorrect about that.  I upgraded to 10.7.3 a few weeks ago, and then last week I reloaded the combo update, hoping it would help.  Not so.  Thank you for letting me know it is a common problem.  I have tried permissions in Disk Utilities, and in Macaroni, both at least 4 times, plus numerous restarts.  Nothing Improves.  It still can not find the internet when it wakes up or gets up.

    My messages app won't open, after I sent a large iMessage. I think it just has too much data on it. What can I do other then reset my iPhone?

    Hi everyone, I had this problem but none of the solutions above worked. What happened with me, and with others in other forums, is that a particular thread or message was causing the problem. I'd go to open the message and all I'd get was a white screen with the blue bar at the top. So, I went into contacts, pressed 'send message' to a contact whose message wasn't causing the problem, then I pressed back to messages. You then swipe to the left on the thread that's causing the problem, and delete it. Sadly this means you will lose all that person's messages, but you can try opening it from there and deleting it on the thread. Didn't work for me though. Hope that helps! It was the only thing that worked for me after about three days of total frustration and resetting!

  • Think i just downloaded a keylogger or malicious software

    Think i just downloaded a keylogger or malicious software on a mac?
    i was strolling through my email on yahoo and saw an .exe file...i ran the virus scanner that comes with yahoo and accidentally clicked and downloaded it while on my safari browser, apparently it came up clean but you never know because .exe files can stay hidden for days. The file was sent from an android phone i believe. it was supposed to be an image file from the looks of it im not too sure. But i just deleted the file as fast as i could and then emptied my trash can hoping it would be gone for good. i tend to use paypal a lot on my computer and i want to make sure that it is 100% safe to use and my password wont be compromised. is there any advice anyone would have for me? Can an .exe file compromise a macbook computer? Is my computer safe to use?

    A small correction to wuzradioman's notes.
    .exe files don't just load software onto PC computers. An .exe is a Windows program application. Just as if you were launching a Mac program in the OS X Applications folder.
    An .exe can load software onto a PC, but that's just a program to install the actual program you want to use onto the hard drive. Macs do the same thing. A .dmg is just a container. It doesn't do anything after opening it until you either drag the application out of the .dmg to your hard drive (doesn't have an installer app), or you run the installer in the .dmg to get the actual app onto your drive.
    Getting an .exe to run on a Mac takes a lot more than "a few conniptions". You need to be running Windows on your Mac in order to run a Windows .exe program. Without Windows itself, an .exe is completely useless on a Mac and can't run in any way. Just trash it.

  • Windows 2000 and the iPhone... am I just screwed?

    So I just got an iPhone, and it turns out that waiting 1 hour for customer services just lends to the same issue: the iPhone will not sync with Windows 2000, because the iTunes software will not update to 8.0.
    It's not like I have a choice in this matter, because I use my work computer. I can't upgrade to XP becuase I don't have admin rights. What I would have thought is that it would at least recognize the iPhone as an iPod, so I could update my iPhone with all the music I've stored up. (I work for a company whose CEO is on the board of directors for Apple, so they're totally cool with iTunes and Apple products.)
    Will the iPhone software ever be set up to be an iPod to earlier versions, or am I just screwed to wait for a new computer?
    Now, in a year, the whole company is converting to Macs, so it won't be an issue. But it basically means that my iPhone will never be connected to my computer.
    And just as a last gripe... the support phone was just awful. She wanted me to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it, and she had to consult her manager when I explained the Windows 2000 issue. Her response was just, "Sorry, it will never sync. Is there anything else I can help you with?" Thanks.

    Windows 2000 is very old. With a CEO on the Apple Board of Directors I am quite shocked that his company's platform is so far behind. Most businesses have upgraded to XP years ago, just as the Mac community has migrated from OS 9 to OS X. It's just a fact of life.
    It would be very expensive for Apple (and even Microsoft) to support W2000. I know of no tricks to make it work - the OS has just changed so much in eight years.
    I'm sorry this is happening to you, and I wish I had a better answer. I hope someone else has a solution for you...good luck.

    So basically if a iphone has a fault after the 1 year warranty period is over, there is nothing the consumer can do but purchase a new phone??
    Pretty much. Except that Apple will replace it for a fixed fee that is far less than the cost of a new phone. In the US the replacement cost for an iPhone 4 is $149. It is comparable in the UK. Unless you can prove that the fault was present at the time of purchase. A switch wearing out would probably be considered normal wear and tear, not a "fault".
