Oh dear, messed up a Quicksilver

I have a Quicksilver G4 (digital audio, I think) 867 mhz, if that helps. I messed around with the jumper settings on the 2 ibm deskstar drives in there and now the darn thing won't boot. I also cracked off
one of the screws for the vga socket on the Geforce card that's in there, too. Been a heck of a day...
I think I can get the old screw out there and weasel in one of those screw extended things from an old adapter I have. I can't remember which drive is the master and which the slave. I tried setting it to cable select, but this isn't exactly a walk in the park. On the back of the drives there's 2 sets of settings, one for 15 heads and one for 16 heads. Complicated as all get out. Tried going to ibm's website, which directed me to Hitachi's (who now takes care of all things Deskstar, or deathstar)
and they told me set one to master, and one to slave, which didn't help much
thanks for any reply, including pictures ,etc

On almost all the desktop G4s, Cable Select is used. You can tell because the cable connectors are different colors, a giveaway that they are different connectors.
Cable select means that the drive plugged into the End connector will be the Master, because its cable connector asserts the signals to tell it so. The drive in the middle will be the Slave. So set both drives to cable select and the different cable connectors will take care of it for you.
Post the drive model, and someone can find the strapping guide for that family of IBM drives, now on hitachi global storage technology site since they were sold to hitachi.
Re: VGA screws.
There is no specification for how tight those screws should be. Their purpose is to keep the plug from falling out of the jack from its own weight. As long as that is being accomplished, they are doing their job.

  • Opera and Bridge?

I was messing around in Quicksilver. I typed "O" and it showed an Opera installation I didn't even know I had, located deep in the bowels of my Bridge installation, and a full-featured one at that. Is this necessary?

    >Is this necessary?
Yes it is. It's used by Bridge in normal operations.
    Leave it alone. :)

  • Oh dear - I messed up, is there anyway to fix this? (CS3 to CS2 related)

Hi, I downloaded an indesign document from an ftp site provided by a client - I was told I had to work in CS2 as otherwise I wouldn't be able to resave the document back to the server - What happens is once I have made the latest set of changes to the document I click save and it gives me an option to save back to the server rather than just my mac.
The trouble is I opened the file and began work in CS3 and now I cant open the file in CS2 anymore so I have no way that I know of to save/upload this file back to the web for the client as I am not given an option to upload it as CS3 doesn't work with this programme..
Is there any kind of solution/workaround?
    Thanks in advance.

    ok thanks guys.
I opened my file in cs2 as a .inx and resaved it as a cs2 file.
Now when I make any additional changes to the document anything I type is red underlined (and sometimes has a little red upward pointing spire shape after it. (with invisibles on)
What does this red stuff mean?

    hi,
you have an option for currency translation in report design also where u can specify the source and target curreny and do the transfer global settings in source system then whatever value maintained in source system gets reflected at the report.

  • Time to upgrade Quicksilver HD & DVR - What? How? Suggestions?

    Hi,
I am considering upgrading my internal hard drive and replacing my existing DVR. I hate to mess with things that are not broke, but I am at the point now that I think I need to just go for it! I am not too tech savvy so bear with me. I would appreciate any recommendations and/or suggestions as what to use & how to do it the least painful way.
    1. What type of internal HD do I need? Am I limited to the size I use? Can I leave the one I already have in the computer and just add another larger size internal HD - so I could have two? Do they need to be switched around?
    2. What kind of DVR would be compatible with my computer and what needs to be done to computer to do the upgrade. (NEC 3550A, or Pioneer 110?)
    3. Should I update to 10.3.9 before or after installing new hardware? (I've been scared to update - all works fine now. Anything I should do to avoid problems after updating????)
Here is what I have NOW:
    - G4 Quicksilver 2002 (800mhz/768mg)
    - Running OS x 10.3.8 & OS9 (even though I do not use OS9 that much anymore)
    - Pioneer DVR-105
    - 40gb internal HD(only 14gb left available!)
Sorry for all the questions. I have read some of the posts on here and think I have an idea of what I need to do, but just want to make sure and verify.
    Thanks in advance,
    Leah

Hi! Sounds like you're well on your way!
Any of the approaches you have mentioned should work okay. I would take the easiest approach and clone the startup volume from the 40GB drive to a partition on the 160GB drive, check the cloned volume to insure that all went well, then apply the updates to it from Software Update. When I was certain that the updates went well (no rush, give it some time), I would then clone the newly-cloned volume back to the 40GB drive, which would provide me with a complete and up-to-date backup volume that I knew was fully operational.
You can use Disk Utility's Restore option to create the clone, but I'd recommend Super Duper or CarbonCopyCloner, which are faster and less quirky. The links are below.
As long as you do not choose the option to clone to a disk image, the cloned volume will be bootable (if you make a disk image clone, you can't boot to it because you have to open/expand the image before you can do anything with it). Just clone one volume to another volume and it will be a bootable duplicate of the original volume.
You may boot from either the master or slave drive. It's recommended that the master drive be the startup drive for better efficiency, but it isn't essential. When two drives operate on the same bus, the master drive gets priority from the controller when both drives need to access the CPU at the same time. Since the system drive is the most critical one in relation to data flow with the CPU, it normally is set as master. This only affects your Mac's speed when both drives need access at the same time, though. Otherwise, it makes no difference whether you're booted from the master or the slave.
You can switch the drives around at any time if you wish - just be certain that the jumpers are reset when you change their locations on the ribbon cable.
Concerning "junk", the only time I do a fresh install of the OS is when there's a major upgrade, such as going from Panther to Tiger. That's when all my "junk" that's hidden in various folders all over the place gets thoroughly cleaned out... Installing everything from scratch on an OS update for me just seems to be too much work for the benefit that's gained.
Some third party applications tend to put required files in non-standard locations, which is one reason to be leery of copying apps over, rather than reinstalling them... the supporting files are easy to miss. Unless you have a lot of junk to get rid of, I'd stick with a clone of the whole works, weeding things out bit-by-bit afterwards, if you must. After all, you will then have a bootable clone for backup, if you mistakenly toss the wrong thing and have problems.
You are going to have two drives with a total of three volumes. Particularly as you use the second partition on the 160GB drive, please remain aware that there's no way to backup 160GB to a 40GB drive. As your data storage increases, you might consider budgeting for yet another drive somewhere down the line...

  • 4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic messed up

Hi dear all, one of my workers messed up this big time. He spent about 30 hours on this project already, so we are trying to see if we can still save the project.
We shot the video with a HDR-FX1 DV 16:9. And captured with anamorphic as well. But when he was doing the editing, he opened a sequence in 4:3 format. So there are letter boxes above and below the 16:9 format video.
We tried to open a new sequence in 16:9 anamophic format, and tried to play with the settings a little bit. But when it's 16:9 anamorphic, the copied video becomes even flatter, the letter boxes above or below are still present.
Is there anyway that we could get rid of the letter boxes that was edited in a 4:3 sequence? A million thanks.

Try this on ONE clip first...
Right Click on it and REMOVE ATTRIBUTES... make sure DISTORT is the only thing selected.
If that works, select ALL the clips and do the same thing.
Oh -- you MIGHT want to duplicate the sequence before you try this. But that said, I think it will work.
    Good luck,

  • The AppleTV SCART mess, part 2. Working converter?

Wonder why the thread went locked?
Anyways..The SCART mess is IMHO boiled down to:
    Sabaoth (starter) wrote:
There's something I can't really understand about this big problem with AppleTV and SCART connections in Europe->I don't know why customers without high definition TVs have to mess around buying expensive YPbPr to RGB transcoders.
Ljungbergarn (me) tought ATV had RGB out (wrong, and I am far frpm not alone here in EU) The "RGB" out is NOT RGB, it is (?) YPbPr (also called "Y/Pb/Pr", "YPrPb", "PrPbY", "B-Y R-Y Y" and "PbPrY") and since I am not a rocket-scientest
(as many others who bought ATV) I can not get ATV to work with my European fat TV.
Ian Parkinsson wrote:Apple do NOT state anywhere that the output is RGB, they clearly state 'Component Video'.<->
Correct. but again..I only looked at the connections looked like RGB.
My mistake, not knowing all these weird connectionsnames and that Apple did not take notice of EU tv´s are working.
MADIMAGE wrote (and put the finger right on the spot)
The question is, why is not AppleTV offering a RGB
output mode? This conversion could be easily done
at the driver level in the embedded OS X AppleTV
ships. All TVs with standard SCART connections
could display AppleTV video signals, without
requiring expensive convertors with external power
supplies; not to mention all the confusion concerning
standard definition TV support. Many users are
spending hours and hours reading forums and product
    hints to find a solution.
In my opinion, adding RGB support from inside AppleTV
is just a matter of doing some easy math with the
signal before sending it to the output. It makes no
sense to disregard this solution, considering that
AppleTV is being shipped in Europe, where RGB is the
video standard - or at least it has been for a long
    time <->
RC-R wrote:The "problem" is that Apple TV is not designed for standard TV's.
    <->
    How true...
AppleTVfan wrote:In Europe these kinds of TVs have been sold with SCART and composite or s-video inputs, but never with component inputs.<->
True again. So Apple did make a mess as Sabaoth said not thinking how TV´s are made in EU. (thanks Apple!! Grrr)
Now when we know that ATV demands a modern "US" tv is the question for us who has A: a European TV or B: a TV without HDMI or Composite.
THE HAMA Video converter did not work:
    http://www.hama.de/portal/articleId113956/action*2563/searchMode*1/bySearchvideo+converter
    It converts:
    - YUV (Cinch in) in RGB + Sync (Scart out)
    - YUV (Cinch in) in RGBHV (5 x Cinch out)
    - YUV (Cinch in) in RGBHV (15-pol. HDD)
    - RGB (Scart in) in RGBHV (5 x Cinch out)
    - RGB (Scart in) in RGBHV (15-pol. HDD)
None if this worked! (of cource)
here is the the answer from HAMA:
    Dear Mr. Ljungberg,
thank you very much for your e-mail.
The Component-input (YUV) of the Video Converter 2-3 is able to handle interlaced signals up to 576i and progressive signal up to
576p. These signals are converted to Scart-RGB an are availabel on the Scart RGB-out of the converter. So because you want to make a
connection to a TV-set with Scart-RGB input you have to take attention to the supported signals of a Scart-RGB input of any TV set.
The TV set will only accept interlaced signals up to 576i. If you setup your Apple TV to any progressive signal or to any interlaced
signal higher than 576 i you will see corrupted picture or no picture on the TV screen.
To make shure that your TV set is able to display the signal without any problem, you will have to setup your Apple TV to 576i
output, all other setups are wrong and will cause corrupted picture.
After you have connected the Apple TV and switsch it on the first time, the setup will start automatically, this setup also includes
the setup of the picture format. It is alos possible to start this setup manually at any time. To do this, press and hold down the
"Menu"-key and the "+"-key togetehr for about 6 seconds. Apple TV will now start to switch slowly between the different picture
resolutions. As soon as it it setup to a resolution that is supported from yout TV set, you will se the Apple Logo clearly on the TV
screen, click the "OK"-key at this moment, to stop the searching procedure. To exit this menu, press and hold down the "Menu"-key
until the Apple TV mainmenu is shown.
For some TV sets there may be need to setup the Scartinput manually to RGB-mode, please refer to the TV manual. TV sets with more
than one Scartinput usually will have only one Scartinput that is able to handle an RGB-signal. Please refer to the manual or the
menu of the TV set for this.
Cables with poor shielding quality may cause interferences and so the picturre quality will not be very good. We recommend to use
cables with seperately shieldes wires ony, please do not use cables with only one common shield for all wires together.
With good quality cables and the Video Converter 2-3 you can reach a cable length of up to 30 meters with perfect picture quality.
Since the Apple TV is available, many customers are using our Video Converter. Until today only a couple of problems appeared. In
any case the problem was solved by seting up the correct picture format 576i on Apple TV and using high quality cables.

    Ola,
If it is any consolation to you, many people all over the world are confused by the many different video standards & connection methods used for different video formats. SCART was one of several attempts at an "everything" connector to simplify things for consumers, but since it was developed almost 30 years ago, long before digital TV, HDTV, & electronic content protection became a reality, it is inadequate for today's needs.
The same is true for older TV's, & this is not limited to one part of the world but is -- or soon will be -- the case pretty much everywhere. This is not the fault of Apple or any other equipment maker. If you are looking for something to blame for this, blame the march of technology, which both demands & makes possible more efficient & flexible use of the ever more crowded TV channel spectrum available around the world.
Put simply, all major, technologically advanced countries are switching to digital TV. Because its benefits cannot be fully realized while analog broadcasts continue, all these countries either have or are contemplating turning off analog broadcast TV transmissions after some transition period. For example, in the US all analog TV broadcasts will be turned off by Feb. 17, 2009. (For other countries, see the Wikipedia's Analogue switch-off entry.)
What this amounts to is the first worldwide effort to move from a number of incompatible TV standards, each based on regional electrical standards over half a century old, to a single set of flexible standards suitable for everyone, whether they want HDTV, SDTV, or a mix of both. This should be a good thing in the long run, but for now it means a huge amount of TV equipment is about to be rendered obsolete.
Moreover, most consumers (regardless of where they live) can no longer assume new & old gadgets will work together without converters that will themselves eventually become obsolete.
With this in mind, it makes sense to decide if a converter or a replacement TV is the better value.

  • Photoshop Elements 9 is messed up.

For some reason, Photoshop Elements 9 is messed up when it comes to the tools. I click on the hand and I get 3 hands, not just one. Any other tools I seem to click on comes out with 3 of them in a row, not just one. I click on the crop symbol and I get 3 crop symbols in a row plus the same for most of the other tools. I tried some previous instructions but they didn't work. Do I have to re buy PSE 9 all over again ? I have quite a selection of Adobe products but I've never seen anything like this. I already uninstalled and reinstalled and it didn't do a bit of good.  HELP !
    [email protected]

Dear Barbara B.  Thank you very much for your response. I only wish I was a bit more technology minded so I could fathom many of the responses. I am a photographer and use quite a number of PSE program in my work such as PSE 7 PSE 8, PSE 9 and PSE 11 in addition to CS 5.
About a week ago, I opened PSE 9 to make image adjustments and that was when I saw that the cursor if you will, in PSE was messed up. For example, when I clicked on the hand I didn't get just one hand on the screen but 3 of them, one next to another. When I clicked on the crop tool, I didn't get the crop symbol but something like 3 circles, one next to another.  When I clicked on the move tool, I didn't get anything on the screen.  It was like some of the tools were not able to be used.
I reinstalled PSE 3 times thus far with no solution. I don't know if I have to buy another new PSE 9. So this is where I sit presently. I use PSE 11 with no problems, CS 5 with no problems. Each of the programs contain certain different tools that do a different thing on images but nothing like this.  Nobody really seems to have encountered anything like this nor can they specifically tell me what to do to correct it.
Any advice or direction you could supply would be most appreciated.  There are no viruses I am aware of. The PSE 9 app did not experience a crash that I am aware of.  At this point, it appears that the only choice I have is to shut PSE 9 and go on with another app.
    Thank you for your time.

  • IPhoto is totally messing up the color of photos!

    the issue:
    - I import from my camera to iPhoto
    - drag photo to the desktop
    - open and edit photo in Photoshop (and save it)
    - drag the new version into iPhoto
While in Photoshop it looks fine and it also looks fine when I upload it to the web, but when I add it to iPhoto the color is all crazy... specifically the reds are exploding out of control!
    Any fix for this?

    Joseph,
Colors on computer is a NASTY complicated subject. Please don't balk at people for not wanting tread. That said: There are 3 preferences that are affecting the colors you see on screen (and in print outs). (iPhoto, Photoshop, System Prefs)
    1. First check your settings within iPhoto
    Go to Preferences> Advanced
you will probably see the checkbox enabled for 'Add ColorSync profile'
(i assume this embeds whatever profile is chosen within System Preferences>Displays>Color)
You probably want to leave this as is if you've been satisfied with your screen appearance and printouts.
    NEXT the Nasty part:
Launch photoshop: You need to mess with "Color Settings" within Photoshop to avoid this color conversion.
(the command is under Photoshop>Color Settings...)
ASSUMING here your camera or iPhoto has already embedded a color profile…
    Within Photoshop>Color Settings:
Under Color Management Policies be sure it's set to
    'Preserve Embedded Profiles'
You may also wish check all the boxes that say "Ask when opening" this will alert you to missing or different profiles.
    ASIDE:
By default all Adobe programs are set to mess with color (TRULY annoying)AND very hard to correct. Even opening the same image in Adobe programs color is inconsistent - at least as of CS 1.
So, Unfortunately, you may need to test a few times, with different settings to see which works best.
Try now opening/resaving a COPY of one of your iPhoto images. View it in iPhoto. If this works, your good to go.
If that doesn't do the trick:
You may also want to enable the Advanced Mode and change the engine to "Apple Color Sync" and intent to "Perceptual"
ALTERNATELY: you can choose the "Color Management Off" profile from the the Settings pop-up. (unfortunately despite the title, Pshop still won't really leave color alone)
    SIDEBAR:
You should try all this copies of your originals (Duplicate first within iPhoto)
until you find a setting within Pshop that works.
The bad news, I've never found a way to set things so that it doesn't mess with color at all. Maybe someone else here can pipe in.
Good luck, if you have any joy, you should repost here to tell us what worked for you.

We sort of get the idea although it's not over clear exactly what you did, many thanx for leaving us with your findings, It would be great to get a little more detail though.
