Oh, Lord, Please No...iBook dying

I'm terrified that this is what I think it is.
My iBook G4, in the past two days, started turning itself off. I didn't think about it, because I've been busy, but tonight it wouldn't turn on...it would power on, but the screen would stay black and the fan would blast. When I finally put pressure just below the left-option key, it turned on and is working for now.
Please, please, please, please tell me this isn't a logic board failing. And if it is, what absolute bullsh** since the logic board has already been replaced on this laptop and it's barely two years old. It was replaced about this time last year...does anyone know if the coverage extends for a year or just ninety days? I know, I know I should have bought AppleCare, but I was in a hurry the night of the purchase and forgot later.
Should I just take the $300 and put it toward a new Macbook? Problem is I don't have the money to fund the rest of that computer purchase. So, what the ****? Or, by some stroke of divine luck is someone going to tell me this is just a loose screw that happens to be right where the LB is? Geez...

You probably have to read the thread 'iBook G4 logic board fix' in 'display'. Good luck!

  • Please Help iBook dual USB crash

    Hi everyone
I have a big problem with my ibook (dual USB) 700mhz OSX 10.3.9
Since last night when I try to start it, after completing loading all the stuff and showing also the desktop it crashes and asks me to restart holding down the power button or sometimes it freezes and I have anyway to restart it.
I tried to boot from the OS install CD ROM holding the "C" key but the system keeps booting from the HD.
The same comes when I try to run the hardware test CD. It just doesn't work with the "C" and the system try to boot normally from HD. (What have I to do to boot from a CD???)
I can just say that my HD (20GB)was almost full and that two days ago I changed the firmware of the monitor installing a patch to have a mirroring display.
Please help me, next week I have to travel for work and I need my iBook!
    Thank you very much.

  • IBook died. Panthr. Can to save/transfr  info to another Mac? with Tiger?

Let's say a person for some reason didn't have a back up.
And then his iBook G4 stopped working and was advised not worth fixing cuz could buy a better, upgraded, but used Mac computer.
Can his info, all his docs and bookmarks and favorites, etc., everything, still be transfered from broke iBook to another Mac (a better mac, tho used.)?
Just take out the hard disc with all the info and somehow transfer that to a better mac?
And could he do that even tho his old Mac was Panther, and if a replacement mac had Tiger or Leopard on it? Would that work? Or would he have to remove Tiger or Leopard from the newer Mac and replace it with Panther to accept transfer of his older contents. And then assume he would have to go through normal upgrade procedures from Panther.
    Oh, he's so confused.
But so thankful for your help.

Some of the answers depends upon the "better mac". The other big question is why did the other computer die? Was it the drive that failed, in which case there is no point?
To keep it simple, in all likelihood you couldn't just swap the drives and expect it to boot another computer unless the new one happened to be identical to the first. What would be easy would be to put that drive into an external enclosure, or get one of those adapter things that don't need an enclosure, and copy off all your files, or just turn it into an external drive for backup, etc. Since this drive is coming from a laptop I don't think it will fit in a desktop without an adapter, and laptops don't have room for two drives (I don't think, never having owned one myself). You can have two drives attached to a computer, or even in a computer. The format of your old drive is compatible with Tiger and Leopard for the purposes of reading files, but as I said before I wouldn't try to boot from it, especially not if the new computer is a new Intel machine.
If it were me, I would get an external firewire enclosure, and put the drive in it. I would then attach it to my new computer and copy off my data files. I would then wipe the old drive and use it for backup or data storage. Some of this will also depend upon the size of the old drive. If it is a 20GB drive it is hardly worth the trouble of continuing to use it and the expense of an enclosure and I would just find (maybe borrow) a suitable enclosure for long enough to copy off data files.

  • I have bought and ipad first generation and i would like to put my ebooks on how can I do this please the Ibook app will not download on this ipad

I have bought a apple ipad 1st generation and I would like to put my ebooks on how would I do this the ibook app will not download on this ipad many thanks for any help offered

Try downloading the current version of the iBooks app on your computer's iTunes so that the app is in your purchase history. Then on your iPad go to the Purchased tab in the App Store app and see if you can download an older compatible version of it.
If the ebooks aren't ibooks, then unless they are digital-rights-management free epubs then you probably won't be able to add them to your computer's iTunes library (File > Add To Library) and sync them to your iPad - in they do have DRM on them then does the store that you got them from have their own app in your computer's iTunes ? If they then you could try the above and see if they have an iOS 5 compatible version available.

  • IBook died last night when Safari froze

A little background: I've had myriad problems with my iBook, starting last summer. Since that time it has crashed twice...all after the 90 day warranty ran out.
Last night after a few problems booting I was able to surf the Web for a while when Safari unexpectedly froze. I tried rebooting a few times and nothing. I did a hardware check and everything seems OK. I tried reloading OSX and that's where I'm having problems.
I've tried a Restore Disk and that didn't seem to work. I'm not sure where to go from there. After that, I tried to reinstall but it get stuck at the fourth stage and goes no further. It seems to be asking where I would like to install to but gives me no options or choices for places to put it. Any suggestions? I am getting so sick of going to Apple support.
I'm wondering if my computer is just a dud.

Actually, the warrantly is long over. I bought the machine in Nov. 2003. The 90-day warranty to which I referred was the one I got when my logic board fried and I had to send it back to Apple for a repair.
I checked out my machine again last night. (It's the only one I have, I am having to post elsewhere now). Here's what I got:
I was in Disk Utility and the repair did not work. My new question is this: What happens if I choose "erase" one or both of these drives: "37.3 GB Fujitsu MHT2040AT" or "disc0s9?" I also have an option to create a "new image." I don't know what that means but I suspect it might allow me to save what is on those two drives mentioned above before doing an erase. Is this correct? Also, if I do "erase" does this basically just mean I'm getting ready to reinstall OsX?
Sorry for so many questions. I'm a newbie here and I'm frustrated with the number of troubles I've had with this machine.

  • Strange behaviour: DVD froze, iBook died

    Hi all,
Yesterday a strange thing happened with my iBook. I was watching a DVD when the screen suddenly froze in the middle of the film. I could not quit or force quit DVD Player, I could not turn off the iBook and I could not eject the disk.
A couple of minutes later, the iBook went dead and would not reboot.
I was only able to reboot after removing the battery and putting it back in after a few seconds.
I've since run disk utility but no problems were detected.
Anyone have any thoughts on whether this could have been caused by a bad DVD, a software problem or a hardware problem?
I'm a little nervous about playing another DVD....

was this iBook running off the battery only as opposed to the a/c adaptor?
sounds like you completely exhausted the battery.
Is this correct? if so, then you may also need to address the PMU provided apple's DU's found no errors on your HD as a result of the power failure which then locked up the unit while playing a DVD.
Not likely to be caused by a bad DVD. Go ahead and try playing a different DVD.

  • IBook dying?

I've had my G4 ibook about a year or so. In the last couple of weeks, it makes odd loud noises from time to time (especially at night)--when it should be sleeping. Then I got the grey apple screen only at startup--Disk warrior found and fixed problems on the hard drive. I thought I had fixed everything, but lo and behold within a couple of days, the problem was back again: the computer works for awhile, but then starts making noise, freezes and only turns on to the grey screen. This time, Disk Warrior found NO errors on the hard drive;HardWare test disk found NO problems; and I reset the power management unit--yet the problem has now recurred again! Any suggestions? I have no usb devices plugged in and no recent memory upgrades.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

"odd loud noises" can only come from a few things in an iBook.
    1. Speakers. If the machine is asleep and you're not running any programs this shouldn't be it. This noise comes from the speaker grills.
    2. Fan. Generally this will be a high pitched grinding noise. Shouldn't be that common as the fan is generally off. This noise comes from under the top center of the keyboard, under the "YUI" section.
    3. The hard disk. Generally the culprit for this symptom. The bearings in the drive start to fail. The problem is usually cumulative in that the problem makes the problem worse. This noise comes from under the left palm rest. Moving/twisting the laptop in the air will usually cause the odd noises. From grinding to whining to screaming type noises that a computer has no right to be making.
    4. The optical drive. The noise will only occur when a disk is inserted and spinning. Usually a whirring or deep vibration noise. Comes from the right side of the keyboard under the enter key area.
AS I said, the noises are generally the hard disk. Back up your files and have the drive replaced as soon as possible to prevent unexpected failure/downtime.

    iBook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

After leaving my ipod hooked up to my computer for most of the day yesterday and resetting it a couple times, it actually turned on and started working. But the battery died almost immediately, so I am guessing it is the battery ... maybe?
Any thoughts on how to go about getting a new battery? I am not great with technology and don't even see how to open the ipod so that the battery can be replaced.
    I appreciate any help!!
    Thanks!

  • My iBook is dying?

Hi, I have an iBook G4. In the last month, it has been having some issues. First of all it started to shutdown randomly, and when it is off, it doesn't start unless I take out the battery.
Also the display when off the other day, but the computer was still on.
    Is muy iBook dying?
How can I fix it? If I erase all the data and start all over, would that help?

    Tom:
Since you do not specify which iBook you have click here and navigate to your iBook, the click on HD replacement for step by step directions.
In terms of tools, you can get the tools from ifixit. Look in the right sidebar under required tools.
Here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx screw driver is critical. For a spudge I use the handle of an old toothbrush (choose one made of hard plastic), cut off the brush and bevelled the handle end like a flat blade screw driver).
    • Picking up on one user’s suggestion, I clicked on the pages of each step which involved removing screws to enlarge, then printed out the pages. I poked holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poked the screws in the holes and stacked the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling was a lot easier. No cups to tip over and spill. No guessing. Each screw was exactly in the right place. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. I previously used small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nested them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.

  • IBook and Comcast Cable modem--can't connect to Internet? Please help

    Hello everyone!
I have an ancient iBook . Here are the stats:Mac OSX version 10.0.3(told you it was ancient), 193MB, PowerPC G3. I bought it off of eBay about two in half years ago and it didn't come with an Airport card...I only received a laptop, the original box, some cds, and the adapter. I have a Comcast cable modem and I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out how to connect my iBook with the modem. Prior to Comcast, I had Bellsouth and all I had to do was simply unplug one end from my mother's Dell and plug it into my iBook and it instantly connected. However, I can't do it with the Comcast. Can anyone tell me how? Pretty please?
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.0.x)   PowerPC G3, 193MB

You likely need to contact Comcast to get them to help you set up the iBook for your new cable internet service. They should be able to walk you through it.
In case it may be an encryption problem, you may want to check out iFelix's post in this thread:

    Good luck.

  • My ibook suddenly shut down and wont start up. please help!!!

hi, im new to macs so i need help! my ibook g3 700hmz was acting completly normal and i was using elmedia player on it, suddenly it went on hybernate while i was using it. i could not revive it no matter what i did and i could not shut it down so i took the battery out. now it will not start up, power on, or do anything at all. it makes no difference if i plug it into the charger, take battery out or anything. i tried to reset the PMU but had no success. i took out the ram and tried to start it but still nothing. someone sugested it could be the logic board but would it just suddenly die all of a sudden? another suggested the hard drive but it should still power on with a bad harddrive shouldnt it? could it be the dc board? the battery is low but when you press the button on it one light does come on and blinks for about 10 sec. i have no way of testing the charger but it worked fine the night before. any help would be apreciated.

It's really hard to tell whether the battery would have enough capacity to boot. Lack of bootability may be due to hard drive corruption, as well. Having the CDs (or DVD, as the case may be with Mac OS X 10.4, from which to boot could help you figure out whether that is a problem, although I would expect it to at least start up to a flashing question mark folder if it were a hard drive problem.
When a battery doesn't charge properly, the most likely problem is the battery.
The next-most common problem is the adapter. They do wear out, and it's entirely possible that this may be the cause of the problem.
Next in line for consideration is the power input (DC-in) board. This is the part of the iBook that houses the adapter port. Usually when it goes out, the adapter doesn't work at all. It won't charge the computer, and it won't run the computer. In this case, once the battery runs down, the only way the computer will run is with a battery that has been charged externally (by another iBook or an external battery charger).
The least frequent cause of a battery not charging is the logic board. The power management unit (PMU) can be permanently defective. If this is what is going on, you probably won’t see any charge to the battery at all, but, in my experience, the adapter does run the iBook (unlike when the DC-in board is at fault).
My best estimate in your case is that the battery died completely, since you were using it from the battery when this happened. My 800 MHz iBook came back from a logic board repair with a defective logic board that wouldn't allow me to use the battery at all. As soon as I unplugged from the adapter, the iBook died. It didn't just go to sleep, though, it died completely. So if you had a sudden failure of the logic board, I wouldn't expect it to just go to sleep. Suspect, in this order: battery, adapter, DC-in board, and, finally, the logic board. Because of the way this happened, unless you dropped it or spilled something on it, I would not expect it to be a logic board problem (but that's just my best assessment of the situation, based on my experience). If you want to have it analyzed by professionals, DT&T Services in Fremont, California may be your best bet. They do free diagnostics, but it would cost you shipping charges both ways in order to find out what's wrong with it for certain. They also offer the cheapest logic board repair I've found, often less than what you'd pay for a logic board without labor, and they have a six-month warranty on the part(s), but I'm not sure whether that six-month warranty includes labor. You'd need to ask.
    Good luck.

  • Best way to transfer old files from iBook to iMac?

About two years ago, my key lime iBook died. Since it was pretty well used, I bought a G5 iMac and didn't worry much about the old laptop. I now want to get files from my iBook to my G5. I replaced the power input board and got the machine to start without incident.
I purchased a firewire to use Target Disk mode to get the files I want, but I'm having trouble making the two machines talk. The iMac can see the iBook and can tell me how much memory is left, but I can not pull up any specific files. The cursor spins and the finder is useless until I give up and disconnect the iBook.
My iBook is still using 9.0.4 while my iMac has 10.4.8. I think this gap could be the problem, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
Is there something I'm missing about TDM? Thanks for the help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Your iBook does not support Target Disk Mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Probably you have to take apart your iBook (quite easy):
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.0.0.html
Then you can put the HD in a external enclosure and back-up your stuff.
The HD will fit in any USB or FireWire 2.5 inch IDE (or ATA) enclosure.
All this seems difficult, but it is easy!
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem.
(Please see the "helpfull" and "solved" button's above this message! Apple: Why reward points?.)

  • IBook keyboard problems

Recently our iBook died during a restart after upgrading iTunes. It got halfway through the startup process and then just became a brick. I reset the PMU and it started up all fine and dandy, except now the keyboard is all jacked up. It seems like half of the keys are mapped wrong but also it will go crazy for a little bit. I'll start typing and it will start repeating things like thislk3333kkkkkkkkkkk3333333k3333l.
What can I do? Is this a mapping issue that I can reset? Can you replace these internal keyboards? Please help!

Sorry if i was unclear. the keys aren't simply repeating, they're making stuff up. So if I tap 'o' once it prints 33k3kllakdnnfdk:{. and if I hit enter it prints :0:=} then exposes. in general the whole upper left side of the keyboard is mixed up.
