Oh no!  I deleted everything on my hard drive! Help!!

So I have a new question.
(My previous post was about a pdf reader which I was successfully able to install on my laptop by splitting it among floppy disks.)
I somehow (?) accidentally deleted everything on my PowerBook's 2400c Hard Drive, except for the system folder in like 3 seconds.
Does anyone know how I could get it back?
My operating system is OS 8.1. Absolutely all of my applications/documents are wiped out, but the computer still works fine. It also only takes floppies, and I can't connect to the internet.
What happened was I was deleting a single file, but then when I emptied the trash, it started counting down and ultimately deleted -800 files. When it asked me if I was sure I wanted to delete the desktop folder etc., I finally realized something was wrong and tried to hit "stop" but by that time it was already too late.
I have made very sure not to write any files onto my hard drive.
Thanks!!
ps. if it is totally hopeless that's good to know too

IF you desktop is missing you can try to rebuild the desktop:

If the Mac came w/system DVDs, you will need to obtain them prior to selling.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • Deleting partitions on Mac hard-drive, HELP!!

Thank you to everyone who has helped me out so far!! I've yet another question: I managed to switch back to Leopard from windows xp after a lot of messing around. I've unmounted the drive so at least I won't have that problem again.
My question is in relation deleting the partition and adding it back to my normal hard drive. I've tried doing this with Boot Camp assistant but when I'm deleting it, it just tells me that it's partitioning. i've left it for hours but it does nothing!!! How do I clear it!!! Help!! Space isn't an issue (I've ordered a time capsule!!) but I hate losing memory for no reason, help me!!!
    Thanks in advance!

    Great info - thanks! I have a further question . . .
I am simply trying to back up my whole hard drive onto a Macster external hard drive, but I kept getting an error for any file which contained characters such as / or ? in the file name. When I re-partitioned the hard drive as journaled, I encountered the same problem. Now that I have re-partitioned the drive as Mac but not journaled the problem seems to be gone. Have I done the right thing? Why would the journaled version have these problems?

That's not good. OS X Recovery requires a high speed broadband connection as noted here > About OS X Recovery

  • Will my files i saved using time machine still exist if i delete from my computers hard drive?

I recently had a problem with my computer. I bought an external hard drive and used time machine to back up my 15in mac book pro before sending in for repair.
I have gotten my computer back and needed to delete files from the hard drive on the computer ( close to capacity). Was I safe to do so knowing that everything is saved on my external?
My concern is that if I plug in the external hard drive it will now see those files have been deleted from my computer and delete from the external as well.
    -David

Just wanted to add to this conversation - Time Machine will keep copies of your files for some time.  It is a backup system, after all.  Deleting the files from your main hard drive will not cause Time Machine to go and delete them from your backups.
However, eventually, Time Machine is likely to run out of space on your hard drive, and it then does some cleaning up so it can continue working.  A file that is not on your hard drive will not exist on your Time Machine backup forever.  Eventually it will be deleted to make room for more recent backups.  I can't predict how long this will take, but if you have bought a 1TB or so drive for your Time Machine backups, I would suggest that you might be able to keep some months of backups online - after that, old files that you no longer have on your Macbook Pro will be cleaned away.
So Glenn is spot on - if you want an archive copy of those files, you should make a separate backup - Time Machine does not keep your files forever!
    Hope that helps.

A erase of the drive or boot partition is not always necessary.
Flashing question mark at boot could be a easy fix, sometimes it's the firmware that simply forgot what bootable volume to boot from.
Try holding the Option key down while booting the machine, a choice of bootable options appears, select your OS X and boot up.
When you get in, head to System Preferences > Startup disk and set it again new. This will tell the firmware what to boot from. Test it to see.
Now if you don't have a selection of bootable options, it could be that the drive is dead, or OS X is erased or corrupted so it can't boot.
You'll have to run through this list of fixes to see what's going on, if you need a hardware fix or what, I've also included links if you can't fix it and need to recover your data etc.
(If it's not remmebering your boot selection then also run through the list to reset things.)

  • ITunes Doesn't Delete Movies From External Hard Drive

I have all of my iTunes media on an external hard drive. However, when I just tried to delete a movie (from within iTunes), it removed the movie from iTunes, but the actual mpeg file is still on my external hard drive. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or am I going to have to manually delete content from external hard drive? Thanks.

When you delete an item from your iTunes library, iTunes will give you the option to delete the file too, but *only for items that are located in your iTunes Media folder.* So, assuming your iTunes Media folder is on your local drive, what you are seeing is the correct behavior.
The best procedure in this case is to right-click the track in iTunes, choose Show in Finder, and delete the file within Finder. Then go back to iTunes and delete the track from the library.

  • ITunes Match deleted songs from my hard drive. I had to re-rip them. How can I stop this from happening?

iTunes Match deleted songs from my hard drive. How can I prevent this from happening if I try it again?

iTunes Match can in no way be considered a backup service, this is due to the inexact nature of the 'matching process' (see https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4112, for more detail).
Loss of files from a Disk is certainly possible through media failure.  However, the extent of iTunes Match capacity is solely to influence the content of the cloud.  Perhaps there was a coincident, or pre-existing, failure of the disk which was simply exposed by the iTunes Match interrogation of the disk content.
There are certainly other services which depending upon your goal may work well.  For example, Google Play with gBeats IOS App works very well.  My use of Match is to synchronise across several computers and to drive Apple TV and an IOS device - other IOS devices still use sync for specific music and are complimented by gBeats for access to the full library when local mobile signal strength is high.
The strong advice to always start with a secure backup remains but if your primary concern is iTunes Match interfering with physical disk content you can relax - it simply does not have this ability.  (Apology to Sherlock, further investigation required).

  • DELETING FILES PERMAMNENTLY FROM HARD DRIVE AND PASSWORD PROTECTING

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO PERMANENTLY DELETE FILES FROM THE HARD DRIVE? ALSO, WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO ADD A PASSWORD TO A FOLDER?
    THANKS!

#1) Please check your caps lock key which seems to be on and many perceive as shouting your questions.
#2) Use secure empty trash when you want secure deleting.
#3) There isn't a folder password feature. There's a utility which will let you hide folders with a password, but that is easily circumvented. Then there's making password protected, encrypted image files. The second is very secure but it isn't a folder, it appears as a new volume on your desktop.

  • Restoring deleted photos from lightroom hard drive

If my photos were deleted from my lightroom hard drive, what is the best method to re-import or restore my "back up photos" back into my drive and original catalog?

I think it would depend on your catalog back ups and how the photos were deleted and how many.
If you have a back-up of the catalog before the files were deleted and it was your entire photographic catalog which was large is size , then you can do as DJ suggested.  It would probably be the fastest way.  After the photos are restored to their original location, you may have to go to File>Import from another catalog,  and then choose the folder location of your backups and select the most recent.
If you are speaking of just a few photos, or maybe just one folder, you can simply restore the files on your PC or MAC, and re-import using Add.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't clear deleted events from my hard drive

I guess I'm pretty new at this. I deleted a few events by hitting the delete key but my hard drive is still nearly full. I can't find them now under events or rejected clips or in my movie folder at all. I guess I need to learn how to delete them properly. But how do I now find those (now seemingly hidden) files and delete the properly?

It's not that. My trash can is empty and re-emptying it doesn't help. The files are apparently hidden from my sight so I don't know how to select them and delete. I tried to do a word search for the title, but that also brings nothing. I had 44 gigs free before this new movie event and now I have only 5 gigs free. So it's got to be somewhere.

Hi. 2 days ago I bought a cd ATB. And yesterday I deleted everything from iTunes. Please help in recovering all purchased cd

Did you just delete them from iTunes, or did you also tell it to delete the music files from your Mac ? If just from iTunes then they might still be stored under /Users/username/Music - if they are then you can add them back via File > Add To Library
If not, then whether you can redownload music depends upon what country that you are in. If you can redownload music (and if you haven't changed countries since buying it and it's still in your country's store) then it should show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage :
If you can't redownload music then do you have a copy of it on your backup of your downloads/library that you can copy it back from ?

  • How can I erase deleted items from the hard drive?

How can I erase deleted files from the hard drive?  Will my machine run faster?

If you've already deleted the files and emptied the Trash they are already, in effect, erased. At least the disk space they occupied is now available.
To be able to offer help we need more information about which Mac you have, which OS you are running, how much RAM you have installed, how much hard disk space you have available, etc.
Go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac - copy and paste the contents of the report here (deleting the serial number of your machine). Once we have that info, I'm sure someone will have some suggestions.
