  • What has happened to the wonderful, independent,  DTP section of Pages?

What has happened to the wonderful, separate, Desk Top Publishing section of Pages?
Since upgrading, I am no longer able to:
See my column markers when  layout view is enabled
I cannot identify the colours I regularly use in my magazine layouts as those colours are no longer shown on the palette
I cannot find the flow buttons that used to exist in the bottom right hand corner of the text boxes and can no longer get text flowing from one page to another.
I work in collaboration with someone else in magazine production and we need to be able to liaise with regard to the formatting.   this is now very difficult.   I need this sorted ASAP as we are working to a deadline.

  • Sharing Hi-Def/The Hi-Def Myth

So I've got myself a Hi-Def (well, almost) camera that records AVCHD (Panasonic SD1) and footage played to my Hi-Def (well, almost) TV looks great....
    BUT!
If I make a movie on the Mac - using Final Cut Express (or perhaps even iMovie08) how can I then view it on a TV at the same quality? I think the simple answer is "you can't matey, but ha! ha! we suckered you into believing the Hi-Def myth!!!"
    A few obstacles:
    - There's no software on the Mac to author Hi-Def (well, there is some pro-stuff that's expensive, hard to configure and even then doesn't really work - this is Adobe CS3 suite) although there is some affordable PC software - maybe Parallels/Boot Camp is my friend?
    - I can't simply create an AVCHD file from FCE and pop it back onto an SD card and view with the camera (wouldn't that be nice, though - a bit like the old days of DV-in?)
    - Apple TV seems to be a bit of a kludge, not really Hi-Def (not even as "nearly hi-def" as my Panasonic SD1 or TX32LMD70).
What do other people around here do to share their Hi-Def productions?

+There's no software on the Mac to author Hi-Def (well, there is some pro-stuff that's expensive, hard to configure and even then doesn't really work - this is Adobe CS3 suite) although there is some affordable PC software - maybe Parallels/Boot Camp is my friend?+
    1) Huh?! Do you not have iMovie on your Mac?
    2) Pro stuff starts with Final Cut Express but iMovie actually does a lot of "pro stuff" already. Definitely HD.
    3) Hard to configure on the Mac? Suggest RTFM
    4) Windows Movie Maker is also very affordable. In the same price range (and quality) as Notepad, Paint and Wireless Network Setup Wizard. (I'd rather use the more professional Macintosh stuff thank you very much!)
I suggest getting an iPod to play your HD content to your HDTV, or a proper video cable for your Mac, if you don't have an Apple TV.
Also, getting an HD television helps for playing HD content!

  • TS1702 Hi there! Am I alone having troubles with kids' app Little Pets Shop? Crazy invoices with €89,99 the "Wonderful Mountain"!! Has anybody got an idea? Thanks a lot

Hi there! Am I alone having troubles with kids' app Little Pets Shop? Crazy invoices with €89,99 the "Wonderful Mountain"!! Has anybody got an idea? Thanks a lot

One of your kids made an in app purchase that you did not know about. Some apps include in app purchase and games do this quite often. The game itself is free, but you might have to purchase additional items to enhance the game or to unlock certain levels.
You can prevent this from happening in  Settings>General>Restrictions>In App Purchases>Off.

  • The Wonders of Free Stuff

So there I was, having set up my wife's new PC, but not yet getting a network printer (or a device to share what we already have). Obviously, the first thing I have to help her with has to be printed rom my PC.
In the past, I would have simply used a diskette, and later, a portable hard drive, and later still, a thumb drive. I might have even e-mailed it, which isn't exactly free because I pay for our domains. But very close.
Now, I just sign her up for a free DropBox account and it all happens in the background. No more sneakernet, and no need to share drives, (leaving things open to other problems). And no need for a NAS. (Not yet, anyway)
That is just one example of free stuff on the Internet. The amazing thing is that so much of what we use every day is basically free. Yes, we pay for Internet access. Even if we use a library PC, someone is paying for it. But just like network television, the amount of free things that can be paid for by advertising is just astounding. The thing is, I don't even see the advertising on Dropbox, which makes it all the more amazing to me.
The free Type Styles at Style4Type are more along the lines of easily understood free stuff. He entices you with really great free stuff, and if you really like it, for only a little money you can have the entire thing. Same with Video Copilot. Training for free and if you happen to buy something, even better.
The Creative Cow site is a different kind of free. The advertising is in your face. But, to be honest, I don't really even notice it much anymore except when it is something I might actually want to buy. But the quality of the training is remarkable.
The best kind of free with advertising in your face is Google, I think. The ads can be set to pretty much just be stuff I wish I could buy. Which may actually be worse but seems better. It is easier to ignore clothing ads than camera ads, or tripods, or big screen TVs. The things that Google does with maps, by letting me set up a location on my PC and then automatically have it appear on my phone so that the GPS can get me there? Wonderful. I use it almost every single day for work.
Remember back when Curt Wrigley was spending a fortune on bandwidth for his tutorials? Now YouTube is free and we don't even blink at putting up huge files, at 1080p using a high bitrate to maintain quality. For FREE!
I guess that every now and then, we all ought to take a moment and consider the advantages of advertising over paying outright for services. It really is a different world than the one I thought I was going to see when I grew up. My only real complaint is this: Where the heck is my flying car? I was promised a flying car back in 1959. I found the drawings I made when we cleaned out my mother's place after she passed. There were lots of flying cars. Detroit has had enough time. Where is my flying car???

Free CC would require some hefty advertising to make it pay.
Would you use it for free if they insisted on watermarking your video or photos? Just a little watermark. Nothing intrusive?
Or, how about if you had to watch an advertisement, like on YouTube, every time you opened the app, or every 15 minutes of use?
I think I would rather just pay them. But then again, I pay for cable TV. Some people don't and perhaps they would be OK with the YouTubeization of CC?
But hey! That would mean they had a choice, and people are big on choice, right?

  • When I bookmark a page, the wonderfully imported folders and bookmarks I see when I clik bookmarks do not appear in any of the 3 optional dropdowns?

I really want to help you make Mozilla the best of them all, so here goes: When I want to bookmark a page, those wonderfully imported IE favorites I see in the dropdown when I clik Bookmarks...do no appear? Now...at the bottom of the bookmarks dropdown with those IE favorites is one folder called "from internet explorer"...it is the favorites as I imported them...and at first, I did get the folders of my new Bookmarks...which used to be favorites. It is so hard to explain...yet I really liked everything about your Mozilla OpenSource product enough to say, just give me a quick ring...or a way to do it via chat at any certain time or whatever. My droid is 410-279-6886 My "Edress" is: [email protected] A lot of us in the White House Press Corps have this issue/problem, and so I suppose alot of others do too...and I want to help as I see them all going back to IE...and I believe in you folks. Building a better rocket ship is very difficult...yet I want the good guys/gals to win - & that would be you! So...ring me if it's something that is not some simple fix...like me being a normal dorkey clueless computer user which you can do with a quick email. I will give as much time as needed...to help you.
Respectfully yours and thanking you in advance, I am
    Chard
PS: I am laughing really hard now...your attitude is so frikk'in friendly...and a bit humerous. I am talking about the box below concerning your "Educated Guesses" as to my current browser & OS. Yes...I am an open computer! (WE used to say, we are an open book...my, how time and ambitions change things!) I also love your phrasing re: capcha - and it's good to keep those unfeeling robots away! (and I can read your Capcha...which I also like! ...I actually like everything about you folks. IN closing...I am a marketing & PR savant, just in case you need one.)

Chard..this is Chard, will someone really read my pleas for both needing help...and wanting to give the Mozilla Family help? Hmmm...I am hopefulllll...

  • The wonders of pacman - portable?

Having set up such a nice kde environment today, I decided I no longer needed my gnome install.
So it was with some trepidation I looked through my history and had a look at what I had installed to set up gnome. Put them all together and then did:
    pacman -Rcs gnome gnome-extra gnome-system-monitor alacarte gnome-system-tools gdesklets avant-window-navigator gdm-themes
Looking at the list of things it wanted to remove, the only thing it wanted to remove that I had installed before any of it was exaile. Still, with a list of 144 packages, it's a wonder it didn't tear into my xfce-install to remove packages there. Simply the best package manager around.
I am wondering if it would be possible to port it to other systems like debian or suse (imagine suse running with this - yum, uh I mean delightful)? If so has anyone ever tried this on their box?

alex_anthony wrote:Wouldn't that basically be a fully installed arch system, with some guis added?
i was wondering about something similar too...
It would be pointing to Suse repositories, which means you'd be getting Suse packages. I think Suse devs apply some patches and whatnot to their packages, which isn't done in Arch. It's also not as cutting edge if I recall correctly. The biggest differences would be in the underlying system, too ... or at least I'd assume. I've never used Suse, but I doubt it has the nice clean KISS approach that Arch takes. No easy to modify rc.conf file.

  • Having trouble with internet connections using my Apple G5. Updates turn out to be incompatible with my system. What should I do short of trashing the wonderful computer and spending cash I don't have on a new iMac?

Having trouble with internet connections using my Apple G5 OSX 10.4.11. Attempts to upgrade FireFox or Safari results in being incompatible with with this system. Tried to locate earlier versions to replace upgraded incompatible software only to find that problems have worsened with crashing results. What should I do short of trashing this wonderful G5 and purchasing a new iMac which I really can't afford?
    Chuck's Dilema

    Hi Chuck,
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.
SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...
    http://www.seamonkey-project.org/
    http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/
Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.
    Also...
The last really supported Flash for PPC was 10.1.102.64, but if it's for like Facebook or such, people have been fooling FB to think they have a leter version installed.
    Texas Mac Man's Flash hack/post...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3599648?tstart=0
Flash player 11.1 hack on PowerPC - https://discussions.apple.com/message/16990862
Might be later ones around also... saw 11.3 I think.
(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.
See in each Browser which version of Flash it thinks it has...

  • New to the wonderful world of mac and need help

I am using a powermac G4 quicksilver with a 933 MHz processor 768 mb of ram and I'm running OSX 10.5.7 the problem I am having is that when I go online to play simple flash games they run incredibly slow. I got this mac from a friends father and don't know much about macs, is this a memory problem, a video card problem or a processor problem? I was a Pc user for years so the few things I have tried like putting a different video card probably not compatible in it, new memory probably not compatible in it and i can't find much info on this particular mac, please help!

Hi! Download MACTRACKER to learn more about various Mac models. The database has good info. You can put 3 -512 mb sticks in it for a total of 1.5gigs of ram fairly easily. 933 mhz isn't real fast and it would probably be faster running Tiger instead of Leo. Also make sure you have 10-20 gigs of free hard drive space because anything less will slow it to a crawl. Tom

  • My Macbook is 2 years old and I have yet to see the wonders of Apple...

Hello. Maybe someone can help me with my troubles here. I bought my Macbook a year and a half ago, it will be two years in June. The first night I took it out of the box, something happened to the hard drive. I took it into the genius bar and they had me reinstall the hard drive. The computer was less than 24 hours old! Needless to say, it has been downhill from there.
Now that my computer is almost two, I am somehow in the market for a new computer. I cannot believe that my mac, this alleged flawless machine, needs to be replaced so soon. Unfortunately, I have been looking at Windows PCs instead of macs. I would really hate to do this, as I love using a mac and believe that is in fact easier to use than Windows. But I can say I have never been so stressed about a computer before.
This is one of my main questions. A few months ago, my macbook developed this habit of shutting itself off whenever it felt like it, regardless of the battery charge or if it was plugged in or not. Then, when I try to turn it back on, I have to press the power button 20-30 times. I wish I was exaggerating here. I took the computer to the genius bar and explained my situation to them. Rather than the "genius" looking at my computer, I was talked down to as if I did not even deserve to own a mac. This wasn't the first time this happened either. I have received this type of treatment on my macbook before, even for my iPod. Now, from what I can tell from reading these support boards, this has happened to a number of mac users. Why isn't there a recall, or something that can just tell me where I've gone wrong??
My second question is about the applications on this computer. In an effort to clear up some space on the machine, I've been going through the applications to see what I can delete. Can anyone tell me what these applications are, and what will happen to my computer if I delete them?: Adobe Help Viewer 1.0, AppleScript, Flip 4 mac, Font Book, Image Capture, iDVD (is there a difference between that and the DVD player that launches itself?), iMovie HD, iPodDisk, iSync, iWork 06, Omni Outliner, Picture Sync, Sherlock, and Text Edit.
I am sorry this sounded so negative, but I do appreciate any help I can get with these problems!

Hard drive failures are the most distressing and misunderstood problem with computers. Apple is merely a consumer of hard drives, and there's nothing that they can directly do to make a drive more or less reliable. Hard drive failures happen because of the nature of the device. Anyone with important information needs a good backup strategy.

Nobody has ever said any manufacturer's equipment is flawless. Assembly defects or malfunctioning parts can come from any manufacturer.

Sounds like they were rude to you. I'm an electrical engineer, and you can understand that I don't appreciate being talked down to by someone who might not know as much about electronics (not that I know everything) as I do.

Flip4Mac is the plugin for QuickTime Player that allows playback of Windows Media files. Text edit is a simple editor for text file documents. I find both very useful.

I'd say your's is a rant, although not as negative as some that I've seen in the past. I've never had anything terribly bad with my two iBooks and my current MacBook. The closest thing was my iBook G3 600 having wireless hanging up, as well as a grinding noise clearly coming from the hard drive (again - made by another company).
Really - if you're having this many problems with your machine, I'd suggest a hard drive upgrade to something a bit larger. A two year old MacBook is not exactly outdated, and perhaps a larger and higher performance drive upgrade can bring new life into your machine. You would have ample room for your applications and data, and perhaps the issues with your original hard drive would be resolved. It's not that expensive and relatively easy for anyone capable of using #00 Phillips and T8 Torx screwdrivers.

  • The wonders of the Time Capsule; I keep dropping internet.

Ok, so a little back fill here as to what the issues are. I have an all Apple house, 1 iMac, 2 Macbooks, 2 ATV's, and a couple iPhones. In the past I had run into issues where the iMac would not connect or stay connected to the wireless network. After some deep research I was able to find an answer to resolve that issue. More recently, my TC has been randomly dropping its signal to all of my wireless devices. The problem is that I still have a green light on the TC, but I can't access any form of internet on any one of my products. I can access airport utility but nothing shows up, yet all of my products still say they are connected via the airport logo in the finder bar. A normal power cycle will normally reset the TC and it will go error free for a while. The word "while" being extremely subjective. At times it has gone a couple weeks without needing a power cycle, other days though, I might have to reset it four, five times a day. I'm tired of leaving the comfort of my couch to reset the TC. I have wireless for a reason, and this is not it. Other than this issue, I love the darn thing and haven't been happier with any other computer products. Any help or anyone who might have experience with this, I would greatly appreciate.

My TC was fine for about 6 months after purchase, then I started experiencing problems. Firstly it was the wireless network fell away and TC couldn't be found, and I overcame that with a hard reset. Then it was failed backups, then it was failure to find TC as a backup server, with all sorts of pop-up window messages:
    - "The storage location for Time Machine backups can't be found!"
    - "Connection Failed"
    - "Connection failed
    - "This file server will not allow any additional users to log on. Please try to connect again later."
    - "The storage location for Time Machine backups can't be found."
And all the while the wireless network running from the TC was working??
Couldn't even connect to the TC, so I've just reverted back to firmware 7.3.2 in an attempt to rid myself of the dreaded scourge of 7.4.1. he says with hope in his heart!
I had to select the TC in the backup set-up again, but at least it looks like it's now doing the job of backing up. Like previous post, I will get back to here if this proves to be a temporary success.

  • The Wonders Of MacBooks

I recently got my MacBook, only a few months ago. I was just windering what really cool stuff i can do on my macbook. I want to be able to show my macbook off against windows machines at college.
    Jimbob

    Hi Jimbo456,
Although I don't like people to show off, but I can understand the urge to show other the pride of having mac.
To amazed and amused your fellow pc user, you can install ialertu:
    http://www.slappingturtle.com/home/
or install a program that activate sudden motion sensor so its sound like jedi saber (I don't recomend it)
    And here is more:
show them photobooth, use your macbook as camcorder using iMovie, asked your friend to find any anti virus installed in your mac os x macbook, play them comiclife, run front row to play movie trailer with remote, run widget, etc.... its endless.
But for wiser pc user, just boot it back and forth between Mac os x and xp using boot camp and they will notice the point you want to say.
    Good luck with your show.

  • I am embarrassingly ignorant of the wonders of my MacAir.

Want to type list of names only of my Christmas card recipients which can be alphabetized, added to or subtracted from.  Labels will not be needed.  MacAir or IpadAir available.  I looked at templates in Pages and Numbers but none SEEMED to be the answer.  Any suggestions short of buying Word?

... oh, and by the way, Contacts is also available on your iPad Air!
You could actually share the contacts list between them if you happened to use iCloud to house the list.

  • Oh the wonders of RAM

Hey all, I just upgraded my ram from 2gigs to 4gigs. Oh the difference is amazing, I am quite supprised.
And ram is cheap right now. I got 2gigs for $100.00 at OWC.
    COME TO THE LIGHT!

It sounds like you didn't read the technical details. You shouldn't be surprised that Logic is 32 bit since every mac app is 32 bit. Assuming you bought the G5 before the intel boxes were available, it was the best you could get at that time and a big improvement over the G4.
When the 64 bit version ships, it will allow you to access more ram, but won't make a real difference in CPU power and usage. If your machine is choking from running out of CPU, going to 64 bit probably won't make a difference in your case.
But from what you described it sounds like there's either something wrong with your mac or the way it is set up. If you haven't already, I'd try doing a fresh reinstall of the OS and Logic. If you have a second hard drive, you can do it on there and keep the original one you had.
Didn't you say you had the logic board replaced and that you used to get much better performance than you are getting now? Those are indications of probable issues with your machine and not a logic problem.

  • Why did my latest (manual) update change my version from 14.1.2.x64 to 14.2.1 x32? And why don't I have all the wonderful tools mentioned in the "25 Hottest Features of Photoshop CC" article in the latest Photoshop User magazine?

I realize it's a long title, but I wasn't sure if I was going to get more room.
I contacted LiveChat (11:30 EST) and I was told I would have to come back next week - the Adobe Support people were gone for the day (or weekend).
Since I am a monthly Photoshop CC subscriber, I thought updates were automatic. Is the magazine article really talking about CC(2014)?
    thanks,
    len

    a) I don't know if the update went wrong because I don't know what the correct current version number is. But my Bridge seems correct (6.1.0.116 x64), as does my Camera Raw (see letter c) below). When I do an update, I am told that all my programs are up-to-date. I will admit that I have not checked my Light Room 5.
    b) Based on the Photoshop User magazine, I am missing at least these (all I've tested for so far):
         o  Flame & Tree generators
         o  Select-->Focus Area
o  Blur Gallery (incl Spin & Path blur)
    c) But I do have these:
o  Camera Raw as a Filter
         o  Camera Raw Radial Filter
    d) I am using Photoshop CC subscription on an HP desktop computer with 6GB memory.
Once again, it would be great to know what the correct current version numbers are.
    thanks, len

  • AMS supported on AWS hosting on a generic CentOS AMI?

Hi, I've been trying different ways to have AMS running on AWS EC2. first using the community AMIs provided by Adobe, but they won't stop/start to keep the filesystem, only create/terminate. I've also tried to make a snapshot of an AMS AMI, to use it
