OK... all of a sudden I get asked for mail password

This has just started happening recently... and it is getting a little irritating. What makes it even more frustrating is it not consistent... sometimes it asks me two or three times a session and other times it works without issue.
I will be in Mail and the box pops up asking me for my password and I check the little box allowing it to put it in keychain... sometimes a few moments later it pops up again...
Can anyone tell me what is going on or what has possibly changed. I sure haven't changed anything on my system with Mail. It almost makes me want to switch to Entourage.
Thoughts??

Like many others, I too have noticed intermittent mail-check authentication failures since around mid-November. I use Eudora 6.2.4 with 3 Verizon accounts and another at my employer; only the Verizon ones have this problem. I see the same thing with Mail.app (version 3.5).
In my case, the problem seems to be 100% correlated with 2 of Verizon's pool of about 15 servers. Please see my postings at

I have no explanation as to why some user's Mail Preferences are reverting to APOP. I can see that Ernie Stamper's suggested workaround of setting the preference to "Password" works on Verizon, but IMHO is a bit risky, since that results in your name and password being sent in the clear. I have found that for Verizon users at least, setting the preference to "MD5" is better; that's secure, and it'll work most of the time, but if it fails, Mail will immediately fall back to "Password" which will always work -- that's still unsecure but at least it does that only occasionally rather than every time.

Small chance that you have been infected by Trojan.OSX.BASH/QHost.WB.A that was out for about a day back near the end of July. To be certain open Network Utility from your Utilities folder and do a ping for google.ca and google.com. Also do a locate for each. If the results of the ping show an IP address of 91.224.160.26 that confirms the infection. If the ping IP matches any of the locate IPs then your OK.
Do you recall downloading and installing a flash update called "FlashPlayer.pkg.zip"? That's what caused the problem so you should trash it if you have not already so your not apt to redamage the host file.
To confirm, launch the TextEdit application and select File -> Open from the menu bar. With the file dialog open, press the key combination Command-Shift-G. In the "Go to the folder:" dialog type "/etc/hosts" without the quotes and click the "Open" button. Post the contents of the hosts file.

What OS are you running.. this is usually only a problem in Mavericks.
If so I recommend you mount the hard disk manually..
Use Go, Connect to server.
Type in the IP address if static.. eg
AFP://10.0.1.1
Or the name.. but you will have issues unless the name is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. if you are using bad names.. fix it by a full factory reset in airport utility and give it all names that comply to the above.
Type in
AFP://TCname.local Where TCname is replaced with the actual name.
You will be asked for the password the first time which is public unless you changed it.. please remember to save this in the keychain.
Copy files then to a new directory you create on the TC.. do not place files inside the TM sparsebundle. Nor directly under the main directory.

I keep getting asked for my password for email. Says my POP server "pop.charter.net" rejected the password. In the past I just went into my email and it came up automatically.

In Keychain, in the Keychain window, select "login". In the category window, select passwords.
In the name field, look for name of your outgoing server for that account (like smtp.mail.yahoo.com, outbound.att.net, or whatever outgoing server you have).
Just highlight it and delete it. Delete any and all for that account.
You also may want to check and make sure all your outgoing server settings are correct in Mail preferences. If any info is incorrect, it will not work. Sometimes providers change servers and you don't know about it. You may want to check that if the Keychain fix doesn't work.

If you can't remember the Restrictions passcode you have to either:

Today all of our outlook 2010 and 2007 clients are repeatedly getting asked for their password. This problem just appeared today at both of our locations with exchange 2010 server.

Users on the local network can open outlook and it immediately connects and they see their e-mail. After a minute or two a box will popup asking for their password. Even if it is entered correctly it keeps asking over and over. Closing
outlook and re-opening it solves the problem but only for a minute. Remote users using HTTPS over OWA to connect can't get their outlook clients to connect at all. This does not have any effect on ios devices just outlook 2010 and older.

I would suggest that some virtual directories configured to use Basic Authentication. EWS, OAB or Autodiscover for instance.
Also check Outlook Anywhere configuration. If it was changed from NTLM to Basic it could cause such credential's prompts.
But if you believe that configuration wasn't changed recently then another possible reason for this behavior could be NTLM bottleneck:

I'm trying to update my apps but I keep getting asked for my password to an email address I don't use how can I get rid of it

I press update all apps, I get asked to input my password for my current appleID but then it pops up again asking for a password to an email address that I haven't used in years. Its never done this before what can I do?

Does anyone else have this problem, the package in question is Adobe CS 5.5, this package as worked for years all of a sudden the OSD, gives
waiting for job status notification and hangs forever on the installation of Adobe CS 5.5
If I run the batch file manually that I am using in the SCCM package for Adobe CS 5.5
it works perfectly, but when part of an OSD I now get waiting for job status notification.
Any advice would be great.

Ipad locked up, asking for mail password

My ipad2 is locked. When I open it, it immediately asks for my exchange password through a dialog. I put in the correct password, but it won't accept it and keeps asking me for another. I tried to 'cancel' the password dialog, but that doesn't do anything as the 'Password Incorrect' dialog re-appears immediately.
I can't do anything with the ipad becuase this damned password dialog stops everything.
How can I get control of the ipad again?

It is an iPad problem.
1. Because it's unacceptable when a unit gets looked due to a change in the Exchange password. If you press the cancel button, you may assume your Exchange connection is of course no longer working till the issue is fixed, but not that the unit gets looked forwever. For what purpose it the Cancel button than for canceling the operation. If by design it's just looping, then this is an design error and needs to be fixed.
2. I experienced this problem as well the same way because of the Exchange password change the first time.
But it is now repeating from time to time (without a Password change) and it looks happening, when the iPad connects to a WiFi or network which gives no Internet access. E.g. today it took presumably the WiFi from another house, because my own WiFi seemed to be out of reach. So WiFi connected there, but received no internet access. Because of that, no Exchnage authorisation was possible. Normaly this is not a problem, you dont get prompted to a new password just because of that. Then I tried to access the iPad again when I was out, with no WiFi near and no data connection any where. Same problem..
In the office then, the ipad connected first to the PWLAN instad of mine. Same problem, as no Internet connection was possible. Because of that the Exchange Login was looping despite canceling it and I was unable to access the iPad configuration to force the iPad to connect to my own WiFi. - If this is not an error, what is an error?
Thue to the Tip here of rebooting, I was able to access Conficuration and have the iPad select my WiFi and it all worked WITHOUT that I needed to change my Password, as the Exchange was not changed.
This issue should be corrected by Apple at least to the point, that a Cancel really cancels the process and not leading into a loop, blocking the iPad.

My hotspot is turned off. Other household iphone can turn my hotspot on and don't get asked for a password. Any way to change this?

The password for the hotspot will remembered by the devices that have connected to your hotspot.
If you can't reset the network settings on those devices, which would also delete all network passwords on those, just chafe the hotspot password on your phone in Settings/Hotspot/Wi-Fi password.

Keep getting asked for VM password even though I turned it off & don't use

I do not like this latest update. When I switch from one area to another or when I'm in the middle of searching, I get a message "Password incorrect. Enter Voicemail Password." This is after I called AT&T and apple and deleted password usage from voicemail. It doesn't stop ASKING!!! Driving me crazy. That is why I don't use a PW because I don't want to have to click anything extra!!

Not sure how Apple can delete password usage for visual voicemail access with the iPhone or has anything to do with that, and I wasn't aware it was possible to not have a password to access voicemail the old fashioned way by having to call to access voicemail.
With the iPhone's visual voicemail feature, you don't have to click anything extra. The chosen password has to be entered only once. After that, it is automatic for visual voicemail messages to be downloaded to your iPhone from AT&T's servers and for listening to visual voicemail messages on your iPhone.
