It would be a waste of storage space to use a 1 TB disk for OS & programs. You will probably not use more than 50 GB. Better get a 320 GB Samsung F4 for that purpose and use the 4 Blacks to distribute the load over these disks.
The 920 is so old and hardly attractive anymore. The fact that I am one of the last Mohicans to use one is due to the fact that my system is about two years old. With current prices the 950 is more attractive than the 920 and for the time being the effective entry level for the i7-9xx line.
Remember that the 2600K is intended to be the successor of the i7-870, not the i7-9xx. That is the Sandy Bridge E with the X68 mobo's.
In comparison to the 870, the 2600K is a great step forward, but realize the shortcoming of the P67 chipset:
1. Only 20 PCI-e 2.0 lanes (excluding piggy-backing NF200 chips)
2. Only dual channel memory
3. 4 DIMM slots
The reputed advantages of the X68 mobo are:
1. 40 PCI-e 3.0 lanes
2. Quad channel memory
3. Assumed to have 8 DIMM slots (because of the quad channel memory)
The current X58 mobo's have:
1. 36 PCI-e 2.0 lanes
2. Tri channel memory
3. 6 DIMM slots
The price of a i7-2600K is (over here) € 295, the i7-950 is € 245. The performance of the 2600K is good, but not better than a 950 or even 920, despite higher overclocking and more memory. When a 950 is populated with 24 GB, it clearly wins from a 2600K.

most certainly beats any of the X58s @ stock until you hit a 6 core at stock... and i am not so sure about that either..
920,950,960, 975 done...
and it actually beat the 970 and 980 stock speed numbers we have with 5.02 need to retest with 5.03.
there is nothing wrong with the chipset. if you are going on about cant install a raid card.
again 95% of the people who read this forum do not need any crazy raid arrays. a 5 drive setup with 2 sets raid 0 more than meet most peoples needs.
and if you really need a raid card the big dog Gigabyte offers the ability

[SOLVED] Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard missing eth0

Hey everyone
I'm setting up my new box and haven't got very far, this has to be the first time Arch hasn't automatically loaded the network driver on one of my boxes.
As the title suggests, I have an Asus P8P67 Pro (Sandybridge) which has some intel gbit interface.
I had read issues relating to a realtek interface that has issues with Wake-On-Lan so I just burnt a Ubuntu Live cd and eth0 was successfully found, so it appears that arch isn't loading the nessasary driver.
Running ifconfig -a & ls /sys/class/net on the arch installer (or even after an install) only indicate that lo is present.
Can I use the ubuntu Live CD to workout which driver / module I should be using to get the Network working?

Okay I've manages to get the interface up, using e1000e driver : http://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000/f … le/1.2.20/
I was kinda luckly I install base-devel, I also included the 2.6 kernel-headers package, although I'm not sure if that was needed.
Copied it to a usb key and make, make install.
tar -xvzf e1000e-1.2.2.tar.gz
cd e1000e-1.2.2
make
make install
I tried to issue modprobe e1000e but it still didn't show the interface in ifconfig -a. Maybe I should have tried to restart the network service via /etc/rc.d/network restart
Restarting the box brought up the interface.
However, this then killed all my USB ports, stuck in a PS/2 keyboard / mouse and they were fine.
Just running -Syu atm to get the latest and greatest and install sshd so I can access it easily then see if I can get both working together.
What be be the cause of loosing USB aftering install a module for the ethernet?
UPDATE 2 :
After updating the system both the NIC and the USB have failed to be detected correctly.
And trying to re-build the e1000e driver fails complaining that I don't have the kernel Development package installed, although I do have the 26 headers package installed.
As I was installing from the archlinux-2010.05-core-x86_64.iso it might have been too old of my hardware, I'm now trying with the latest netinstall testiso to see if the installer can find the NIC correctally.
UPDATE 3 :
Using the latest testiso sucessfully found my eth0 in /sys/class/net and so too is are the USB devices. Yay!

so i havent really messed with doing HD footage for someone else myself, and there are more variables to HD than SD. (all HD footage i've done, i've shot myself so i know how to set it up before hand)
so i got some footage in, and video is shot in 1080p29.97. do i convert to 1080i29.97? or 1080p24 for blu-ray? i don't really notice much difference myself... but technically speaking, what would be the preferred method?

What you export is determined entirely by where and how it is to be "presented".
The rules are determined by the game!
eg ..if the the game is Youtube..export a youtube preset.
If the game is for broadcast... use broadcast specifications.
If the game is ..share with mates via email...use an export file that will deliver over availabe email bandwidth.
If its for a client...deliver something you are sure they can playback without a hassle and with certainty of the quality they expect.
Technically...stay close the source footage spec. Hopefuly...who ever shot it ..knew what it was intended for "presentation wise".

File Creation Automation - Can I change encoding specs?

So, I setup a watch folder...
1. FCServer looks at the folder and when a new file appears it encodes an M2V file.
2. It then deletes the original file.
3. It sends me an email alert.
The problem I'm having is...I don't see anywhere to increase the quality of the video file. I just need to bump it up a little and don't see anywhere to do this. I've looked both in the System Preferences pane for FCServer and in the client.
Any ideas?

Installation hangs on a Asus P8P67 board

I am using ARCH_201108 image and install from a USB stick. However after booting and select to install, the installation hangs at the same place every time:

I'm far from an expert - hopefully the experts will chime in soon. But as a first check, did you do a checksum on the iso before installation?
I've installed arch on a half a dozen machines or so, and I've had a couple installer hangs - in each case it was due to a faulty iso image. I felt quite foolish after staying up all night struggling only to find that a freshly downloaded iso installed perfectly.

CPU Temperatures High

Just curious to know what is normal temp for CPU to be running. It is consistently above 90 deg celsius when AME is exporting H.264 from PPro timeline. No crash or failures. Temp returns to 40 degs afterwards.

I've been following this thread that I started and was wondering how you were reading GPU/CPU loads. I have the ASUS GTX570 and there is no such monitoring program. So, you are reading the "GPU Load" in the TechPowerUp while exporting the timeline? Is there also a tool for measuring the time it takes to export files or are you just reading your watch?
I've been trying to do the PPBM benchmark, but I'm not producing the "output.txt" file.
I post a lot of videos to YouTube, so I often use the H.264 HD preset. I have a Matrox MX02 Mini, but not the Max version.

This was my first do-it-yourselfer. With everything I read I should be pretty happy. However, not sure about a couple of things:
1) I was going to do 2 x 2 1TB RAID O, but they had nothing smaller than 2TB drives. If they are SATA III, shouldn't they be plenty fast for HDV not RAIDed? Anyway, pagefile, cache, previews on a SATA III. Capture Media on the other.
2) What are the recommended BIOS settings, especially for SATA, Video, etc? I read somewhere that the defaults were not ideal.
3) There's only one PCIe slot, the Matrox will go there. How will that affect the graphics board?

MSI twin frozr II freeze and glitch problem.

Hi everyone,
I have a very annoying problem with my card. Whenever I play BF3 with a total random time I get some green glitches and the display freeze (see the attached screen).
Normally I get right back on windows with this little popup "display driver stopped answer and recovery successful". But now it just freeze and I have to do a hard reboot...
Here is my config:
-I7 2600k
-Asus p8p67 pro rev 3.1
-2x4Gb Ripjaws X
-OCZ 850w 80gold+
-MSI twin frozr II GTX 580 with latest drivers
-Win 7 64b
I've already look around google, I'm not alone but it seems there is no real solution. It's really sad to have this kind of prob with that expensive card... without any solution.

If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

Hewlett Packard already knew about this problem and they have also published a fix to solve the problem of wallpaper stucking on stretch mode. Download the hot fix from the ftp site here: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45501-46000/sp45575.exe. This package changes the Wallpaper Picture Position function from Stretched to Fill, Fit, Tile, or Center.

Date & time change frequently on startup. antivirus stops working also.

For the past month the date & time are changed when I start my computer, an HP Pavilion Elite m9077c with Vista.It doesn't happen everytime, but about 2/3 of the time. I can't download my email until the date is corrected, I get onscreen messeges that Windows media player won't work, & the status of Norton antivirus is frequently changed to "not protected". After restoring the correct date everything seems OK. What is going on? Is this the cms battery going bad , does my computer have a virus?When I run the Hardware diagnostic tool in the PC help & tools folder I get no indication that the cms battery is bad.

As the CMOS battery is supposed to retain date and time, and that is the issue, I would replace it.
