Ok/do not disconnect - mismatched messages

When iPod is done synchronizing, iTunes shows the OK to Disconnect message, but it takes about another 30 seconds sometimes for the iPod message to change from Do Not Disconnect to the main menu screen.
Does anyone know if it OK to go ahead and disconnect the cable when iTunes says it is OK, even though the iPod still says do not disconnect? It is a pain to sit there and wait the extra time, but I don't want to mess up the software/data load either.

If it were me, I would wait. You risk corrupting the iPods hard drive if you disconnect whilst data may still be transferring. Worth waiting the extra few seconds.

  • Can't get rid of "Do Not Disconnect" message

I don't have a 5th generation, but this was the only forum I could find to post. My iPod is two years old, but it's never given me a problem until now. Everytime I connect it to my computer, all I get is the Do Not Disconnect message. I've tried ejecting it, and plugging it back in. It reconizes my iPod because it offers me updates. But, I can't get it to update.

  • IPod connected to MacBook, getting nothing but "do not disconnect"....

I've been searching the forum, manuals, troubleshooting, etc., and haven't come across any solution yet. Or even this particular problem described or experienced. I wonder if anyone might have an answer, or steer me the right direction. I am new to this stuff, please bear with me.
My iPod nano has power, the screen lights up, battery icon shows fully charged, but one second, or maybe less, after it's connected to the computer, the only thing I get is the 'do not disconnect' warning message. No action, not even a pulsating battery icon. (It does that, right, when it's charging?) Even after 20 minutes, with the battery icon on the 'pod screen showing a fully charged battery, I don't get anything on the iPod screen, just the 'do not disconnect'.
I did many resets with the hold and menu and center buttons, and even a restore for the iPod, losing the little music I had on it, and still, the 'do not disconnect' is all I get. I have been closing iTunes and ejecting safely (I believe) via the finder. Remotely, it turns on, though I have nothing on it to listen to now. A few more tries at connecting to the computer, but still all that shows is the 'do not disconnect' message, and I can't do anything.
I've had the computer and iPod a little over two weeks. A few days ago, I did update the latest iTunes software, and today was the first time to connect the iPod since then, if that might have something to do with this and maybe solving it. Everything was fine up till today. Now, I'm kind of stuck here.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

It's perfectly normal behaviour. When the iPod is connected to the computer you will always see the "do not disconnect" screen.
If you have your iPod set to transfer your music manually, then that “do not disconnect” message will continue to be displayed on your iPod until you manually eject it.
You can do this by clicking on the iPod 'eject' icon in the lower right hand corner of iTunes or the eject icon to the right of the iPod in iTunes. With a Mac, you can also drag the iPod into the trash.
If you have your iPod set to automatically sync with iTunes version 7 or later, connect the iPod and when you see the summary screen, uncheck the box marked "enable disk use".
If you are using an earlier version of iTunes, right click on the iPod in the source list, select options and uncheck the same box.
In future your iPod should automatically disconnect after it’s finished transferring music.

  • The good ol' Do not disconnect problem strikes again

    Greetings people.
Boy am I glad I found this forum as I've been pulling my hair out trying to get my ipod to work. For some bizarre reason my ipod has been displaying the 'Do not disconnect' error message for ages.
So far I have reset, restored, updated software, held down countless buttons but the problem is still there.
I can see my ipod in my computer but the error message still displays and doesn't go away. I have heard of a disabling a check box for external disk use (or something like that) but I can't see that option anywhere.
    please please please help me
    Yours (going bald)
    Al

    Hello Al,
The "Do not disconnect" isn't an error message, it's normal to see it stay on when you have your iPod enabled for disk use. If this option is switched on then the Do Not Disconnect will stay there until you manually eject your iPod. Connect your iPod and in iTunes go to Edit>Preferences>iPod. Under the Music tab see if your iPod set to automatically sync (automatically update songs and playlists) with iTunes and also has a tick in the box marked “enable disk use". Remove this tick and your iPod should automatically disconnect after it’s finished updating.
If you have your iPod set to manual update, the box will be greyed out and ticked by default, in that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect iPod

  • Do not disconnect show continually.  Error message is files on the ipod are being used by another program

I get the "Do not disconnect" message all the time.  When I try to eject the ipod the error message is that the ipod can not be disconnected because it is in use with an other application.  I turn off all antivirus protection and the same result.  I can not find what other application is accessing the ipod.  The only way I can disconnect is to go to the drive that it is assigned to, and do an eject.  The unit will sync properly but will not eject for itunes.

Forgot to say the mananging files manually and disk usage are not checked

  • Ipod won't change from 'do not disconnect message', won't show up in itunes

My aunt has asked me to figure out how to get her ipod nano to work. So this is my story:
When I plug it into the usb port is says 'Do not disconnect'. The menu and other buttons are unresponsive. If I reset it, it will say do not disconnect again. It will show up in windows explorer but not itunes.
    1. I checked out itunes, and it is itunes 4. (4.7.0.42) So I downloaded itunes 7 (you need itunes version 6 or better I think). I tried to install it but that was unsuccessful. I could not get past the 'stopping service' portion of the install. I got this message:
'error 1921. Service Ipod Serivce (iPodService) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient priveleges to stop system serices.
I got that error twice, once when my ipod was connected to the computer and without it connected.
    2. I tried to reinstall from the cd. It said to connect the ipod to see if it needs formatting. I did and it was apparently formatting. Although it never finished after about 30 minutes I gave up and closed it down.
    3. It appears to be charging because I get the battery with a lightning bolt when it is connected to the computer.
    4. Periodically I will get this message:
The selected port, COM1, is not available at this time. HotSyncManager will open the port when it becomes available.
So how can I get the latest itunes installed correctly and how do I get the ipod to work? (right now it never says anything other than 'do not disconnect' and it doesn't show up in itunes)
    Thanks.
      Windows XP

    I have found a solution.
The cd I was trying to format the ipod nano for was for a different ipod mini. So that is why I had problems formatting.
As for installing the itunes software: I found a troubleshooting page for it. There was a section that described uninstalling quicktime, ipod, and itunes programs and manually deleting files and restarting. That worked for me, after that I was able to install itunes 7 and I could use the ipod nano.

  • Do not disconnect message wont go away

I have the do not disconnect message on my ipod when plugged into my comuter (windows XP). However, the computer says the update is complete. I have reset the ipod several times. Still get the message and when I try and disconnect (by clicking on the ipod icon) it says cannot disconnect because some files on the ipod are in use by other applications or something. Pls help.

    Hi,
I have been suffering from the same problem, in that I continue to receive a 'do not disconnect' warning on the iPod (4gb nano). iTunes will not eject, nor will windows (as per apple disconnect instructions http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61135).
I have found that MacAfee is the culprit in my case. I am using Virus Scan 10.0 and it seems to keep open handles on files in my iPod drive (although I don't use that functionality).
To release the iPod I have to briefly disable the virus scanner:
    * Right click on the MacAfee security center icon in the system tray
    * Choose VirusScan -> Disable
    * After a few second the Do not disconnect disappears from the iPod
    * Right click on the MacAfee security center icon in the system tray
    * Choose VirusScan -> Enable
I think that MacAfee & Apple need to collaborate to remove this bug.
Good luck and I hope this works for you.

  • IPod "Do not disconnect" message never stops

I get an error message (The iPod "Tubby's iPod" cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application) when trying to eject my iPod from iTunes and computer. The iPod never appears to be finished with updating even though iTunes software states that the update is complete (“Do not disconnect” message never stops flashing on iPod).

  • Synch Issue - no disk in drive message - do not disconnect on IPOD

During synch I get a message:
    "Windows - no disk
There is no disk in the drive - please insert a disc into Drive F"
Drive F is a usb port and there is nothing in it. I thought maybe a song had F: in the title - found two and deleted them from the library, but problem still there. ITunes say synch complete -IPOD says do not disconnect, so have had to reboot IPOD to disconnect. Synch is okay and all files updated okay. Any help?

    Hello,
Well, thanks at least for confirming that I'm not alone. I've done a lot of research on the internet with folks having trouble syncing their older ipods and even ipod touches with the latest version of itunes. Hopefully Apple will read these complaints and address the issues in future versions.
    Thanks.

  • Ipod frozen ("Do not disconnect") Restore attempt triggers error message

    The sequence of events:
    1. ITunes did not recognize my Ipod this morning (My ipod icon did not appear in itunes)
    2. Itunes froze. (Computer froze generally)
During attempts to restart computer, realized that computer failed to start if Ipod firewall cord is plugged in--so I unplugged the ipod. "Do not disconnect" in ipod window.
    3. Read "Ipod The Missing Manual" fix for this disconnect problem, but does not work. Part of the problem is that my ipod still hasn't appeared in itunes, alhtough the computuer makes a familiar "dong" sound when the cable is plugged in.
    4. Figure I will attempt "system restore" for ipod during the brief period Itunes is unfrozen (thawed) immediately after I've restarted the computer. Ipod finally appears in Itunes (which takes 10 minutes to open) It does recognize an ipod--but it doesn't have my name on it. And there's a New message, that my ipod is corrupted and I must restore it, lose songs, etc. So what. Onward.
    5. Attempt to restore also unsuccessful. A new, sick-making message: "There was a problem downloading the ipod software for the ipod. The requested resource was not found."
I've tried a new cable, tried a new port...
Ipod is one year old. What does any of this mean? Where do I go to begin finding a solution? Do I throw it out and start again? Obviously my computer is botched up, too. What a mess.

I have the same... and so many others and no one has a solution (up to now). It might has something to do with itunes 7th version. I have tried EVERYTHING (believe me: the 5 R's/ other Itunes versions / winamp / reboot/ reinstall/ restore/ update/ other port/ etc etc/ searched this forum)
So many people having this problem, though Apple has not reacted on this yet...
despite asking 180 euro's service costs if you want to resolve this by sending this item. Great
