OK, guys, why does the free upgrade to Mavericks fail?

I'm pretty sure this has been asked & answered several times.  I waited until now to accept the free upgrade because of the problems mentioned in reviews and here in discussions. It worked on the upgrade download for two and a half hours, then told me it failed. No error message with numbers or anything, just told me to go to app store purchases? I think that's what it said. Any ideas, I didn't have anything running, left the computer on and read a magazine while watching my old TV. Sitting right here at my desk. Are there problems with the anti virus or security things now? It hasn't fussed about anything like that on previous downloads.

Linda --
Go to the App Store, click on purchases, and see if you can re-download your Mavericks.  I think you should be able to finish or restart the download there.  Turn off any AV/Security stuff.  You don't have FileVault on there, do you?
In your System Preferences > Firewall, make sure it is off. Turn it back on after your download.
Make sure you're not using wireless, and don't pause it at all.

  • Just bought Snow leopard 10.6.3 and upgraded my 2008 iMAC; now want to use the free upgrade to Maverick... is that possible? I read compatibility requirement of 10.6.8 or later...

Hi! Just bought Snow leopard 10.6.3 and upgraded my 2008 iMAC; now want to use the free upgrade to Mavericks like I was advised in the Apple/Switch store... is that possible? I read compatibility requirement of 10.6.8 or later...???? Thanks for any guidance!

Before installation you should back up all your data.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes (you will need the latest version in order to synch with mobile devices).
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

  • Why has the free upgrade 'expired'?

Why was there an expiration date on the upgrade? It seems unfair, as it should only matter when you bought the computer.
I'm pretty angry as I bought my macbook (without leopard) on the 1st of October through the education store. I had to buy it then as my old PC died and I urgently needed a computer.
I've been OK with Tiger but I really need the time machine feature of Leopard. I was under the impression I would get a free upgrade but couldn't find any information on it until now (there was nothing with the computer). I've been pretty busy with work, so after a bit of browsing on the apple site I just assumed I'd be able to upgrade for free/low cost when I had the time. So now, after extensively searching the forums, I find that I could have got Leopard for free, but this wasn't widely advertised, so I've missed the expiration date.
Do I have to just bite the bullet and spend yet more money on software? (I've switched from PC, and the macbook was good value, but all the software I've had to buy has proved expensive). The education discount doesn't seem enough when I can get a copy of Windows on an academic site license for free.
It wouldn't have hurt apple to stick a leaflet in the computers sold in October explaining how you could get a free upgrade. Or even an e-mail with a link.

What upgrade are you talking about?
If you are referring to the "just in time" update, I can only ask where you have been. That expired a very long time ago. If you buy a new computer, it already has Leopard on it. If you bought a computer 6 months ago, what do you expect? Everyone knew about the conditions of the "up to date" policy last year. If you bought yours in October, I don't think you were qualified anyway. But I may be wrong. You simply waited too long before acting.
If you really need Leopard, just buy it. As a student, it's heavily discounted, right?
This board is for technical questions, not complaints about things we have no control over.
What Apple should have done is fantasy. This is 2008. It was your responsibility, not Apple's. You have to take personal responsibility for these things and not blame the "other guy."
Again, this is the wrong place to rant and your post and mine may well be deleted as the border on violating Apple's posting rules.
You are a day late and a dollar short, as they say.

  • Why does the iPhoto upgrade tool go into an endless loop

Iphot on the imac requests the installation of an upgrade tool to use Iphoto on this Imac. downloaded the tool did the install and I keep getting sent to the web site to download the tool again. on the site it asks was this helpful, well Nah ah !! its damned frustrating. what are we supposed to do when the "upgrades" don't work. How do I get into Iphoto ???? thanks.

I agree with you.  Also the install location isn't that intuitive since we normally look in the Applications folder for installed applications.
    Send a requrest/report to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • ***!!!!! Why didn't the free upgrade to Maverick come with a warning????? I am so extremely upset right now. EVERYTHING, including all my photos

This is truly devastating. Please help! Where did all my stuff go? Is it reparable?

If all your files are missing
You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.
If files are missing from one folder
Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.

I don't have Adobe Acrobat installed anymore, yet CC is still telling me I need to update Adobe Acrobat DC. When I try to update it, it gets to 35% and fails, every time. I've tried quitting and reopening CC; quitting CC, deleting the OOBE folder in my profile, and reopening CC. Regardless, it fails. Here's the output:

  • Why does the old iphoto library still remain after the upgrade? Takes up HUGE space on my laptop

Why does the old iphoto library still remain after the upgrade? Takes up HUGE space on my laptop

Why does the old iphoto library still remain after the upgrade? Takes up HUGE space on my laptop
Actually, it only looks like it takes up additional space. The file size shown is misleading.  When you migrate an iPhoto library to Photos, both libraries will show the media files using hard links. The actual file content of the image files and videos is shared by hard links:
See this linked document:   Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
You will gain no free storage at all by deleting either the iPhoto Library or the Photos library.  So keep both libraries until you are very sure, that Photos is working well  on your Mac and your iPhoto library has been migrated correctly. Also, check, if you like the workflow in Photos. It is very different from iPhoto and some iPhoto features are not supported.
There will be no easy way back to iPhoto, if you delete your iPhoto library or the iPhoto application. Apple does not sell it any more.
