Ok..i'm a newbee!

hey every one.. glad to be in this forum.. today,i got my new MBP and installing Mac OS X 10.5 now.. the installation is going on.. but, before that, when i 1st took my MBP out of the package and switched it on, it could not connect to my wireless router although it showed my router's name.. i gave the password .. but, the airport connectivity could not connect.. could some one explain how to connect to my home router from my MAC? Thanks a heap..

The name of the router is D-Link and model no. is DSL 604T (2nd Gen)
and yes.. i have updated the firmware of the router.. it is V3.02B01T01.AU-A.20070814
and i havnt tried connecting the MBP with a wired connection yet, as the leapard is still installing ..
I hope i can fix it once the OS completes the installation. would seek your help if i still could not able to connect it .Thanks

.rtf template and bi server repository failure (newbee tutorial)

I've installed BISE1 on Windows Server 2003 and followed the tutorial. I successfully fulfilled all the excercises except the last one: the creation of Oracle BI Publisher Report from BI Server Metadata. I have created .rtf template in Word. The preview of the template is working showing data. But when I connect to BI Publisher and open From BI Server report and click View I get the message: "The report cannot be rendered because of an error, please contact the administrator." And as the error detail: String index out of range: -1
What could be the reason of that problem? Or where to search for the solution of that problem?
Any help for newbee will be appreciated.

I am having the exact same issue.
I've created a .rtf template using Oracle BI Publisher Desktop. I insert a very simple table and a very simple Chart (a bar graph) just to test it out. The table and the chart wwere showing correct data in the rtf and the pdf when I preview it on the BI server located on my local machine, and when I click on validate template in word, no errors were found. However when I run the pdf in the client BI Publisher Server, the charts doesn't show up in the pdf output while the other contents (headers, tables) are displayed correctly. If I select the html output in the client BI Publisher server, it gives the same error mention above: The report cannot be rendered because of an error, please contact the administrator." And as the error detail: String index out of range: -1
What security configurations do I have to check? If anyone can give a more detail explanation on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It is Command+r or for the online internet system it is Command+option/Alt+r keys. Then you use Disk Utility to erase the macintosh partition, from the built in recovery hd, or you can repartition the drive as one partition from the online system.
To actually get to the online internet system you have to hold that key combo down until you see a globe on the screen. Otherwise it will just boot from the built in recovery hd on the internal drive.

HELP - Dial Up Download Question from a Mac Mini Tiger OS X 10.4.6 Newbee??

There are hugh download files (133 Mb for 10.4.7 for example) that appeared when I ran Software update the first day I got my Mini. This would require 10 to 12 hours download on my Juno account. One solution I saw in these forums was to have a neighbor with High Speed connection download and burn a disc. My NEWBEE question is... Can you go to the Apple OS X download page and successfully download the 10.4.7 update (and others) using a Windows machine with Windows software?? Then have that Windows PC burn a disc that can transfer the update to my Mini?? I'm breaking new ground in my neighborhood and appear to be the only one with a Mac. BUT what do you mean by a "hybrid" data CD? I'm a NEWBEE, so could you give me a little more specifics, i.e., what package/brand & model should I buy? I was thinking any CD-ROM would work! Simple transitions help for an FCP newbee

Am moving from iMovie6 to Final Cut Pro 5 as I didn't like iMovie8 and there's been a lot of talk on the iMovie board about how FCP will probably work better for people like me...
I'm a real newbee to FCP so I'm going to embarrass myself here and ask a really simple question that I can't for the life of me get an answer to.
How do you add a simple fade up to the start of a clip? It would seem that the Fade in-Fade out Dissolves in Effects is designed to join two different clips. I have a clip that cuts to black and the next clip I want to start on a fade up from black.
How do I do this?
Also, how do I do a really simple fade to black???
Forgive me for asking such a dumb question but I just can't find the answer in the Help file (guess the question is way too simple!).

I just tried ramping the clips opacity and I got my fade in just fine, but in order to get the clip fading in from black, I had to go back to the rushes, reselect the clip I wanted and then when the cursor was at the start of the clip, open the opacity and adjust it to go from 0 to 100 in 12 frames. Then I added this clip to my timeline via overwrite, thereby overwriting the same (old) clip that didn't have the fade in. However, I'm not quite ready to mark this question as answered as how do I now add a fade in on a clip that is already in my timeline? Do I have to make the transition decision before I add the clip to the time line or is there some clever way of adjusting the opacity of the clip once it is in the time line and therefore in the edit?

CS5; Properties; CSS Button Missing (Newbee)

I am reading a book and taking an online course, but this applic does not seem too intuitive here, so foregive me, but...
In DW CS5, in the Properties window at the bottom of the screen, I have neither a CSS or HTML button. Can someone please explain how I get them to show?

I'm on Windows 7. The screenshot shows when I've got my '#container' selected, but there's no CSS or HTML buttons regardless of what is selected. I've tried resetting my view by clicking 'Designer; Reset Designer' or by clicking 'Classic; Reset Classic', etc.

Yet another Newbee having Airport problems

I am new to mac and also my macbook. I have been reading thru the discussions trying to find an answer to my problem. I believe I am not alone! I have a Belkin modem/router and although all my setups say I have Airport connection, I can open Internet Connect and select Airport and my network and it say that I have connection. But as soon as I loose the Ethernet cable.. guess what... No connection!!! PLEASE someone help the NewBee Aussie!

Well I have several macs (and PCs) of different kinds all connecting happily to a number or wireless networks. So OSX works fine so dont expect any 'fix' from Apple anytime soon because there isn't anything for them to fix! I suppose there is an outside chance that there is a problem with your Macbooks wireless card but I think it unlikely, you'd have to try to connect to someone else's network to be sure. In my experience if the airport icon in the menu bar shows you are connected but you can't get an IP address this is almost always either a router glitch which will normally go away if you restart it, or a password problem which should be reported by OSX but often isn't. Firstly I would check the router and its settings. Unfortunately the newer the router the more mechanisms it will probably have to stop people connecting so a good strategy is to start with no security and take it step by step from there. Also make sure you have the latest firmware upgrade applied from the manufacturers website, there usually will be one. 'Auto' -ing everything that can is also a good starting point. If your router keeps logs of traffic enabling these can provide a useful source of diagnostics. Of course once it is working you must introduce at least some form of encryption for your own peace of mind, which brings me neatly on to the next point: passwords. There is a big problem with WEP (well several actually!) in that the way the router translates an english phrase into hex is not always the same as the way the mac does it. So you either need to enter the same hex string into the router and the mac (prefixed by $ for the mac, this is what tells it it is getting hex), or sometimes you can see the hex equivalent generated by the router and then just type that in to the mac. The hex key will be 26 characters long for 128bit WEP eg 23f45fa1f1ba91a6241f7f0eff However if there is not a good reason not to use WPA or WPA2 (such as other older kit you need to connect) then this is much better. Set your router to WPA-PSK (TKIP) or WPA2-PSK (AES) and the Mac will recognise what is required and ask you for the passphrase. In this case you CAN use the same english language phrase in the router and the mac as it always seems to work.
Finally we need to make sure that any bad stuff we've done before is not messing us up now. Trashing the preferences as described in the earlier post is a good plan. Also open your keychain with the KeychainAccess utility (in yr Utilities folder) and delete any wireless network entries that have been saved in there. Stick with it it can be sorted out its just a matter of working methodically step by step until you are successful.

Newbee Needs Help. BT Home Hub Wireless connectio...

As a newbee I thought I would ask the masses. I have a black home hub 2. It is hard wired to a number of PC's in the house, plus it also provides a wireless connection reliably most of the time. Occationally, every day/other day it refuses to provide a reliable IP address. My wireless is set as follows:-
Channel 11, WEP, 64 Bit.
Current firmware
Version 8.1.H.J (Type A)

08/12/09
I can attach fine normally, but then it fails to connect (on a know working machine) after a reboot. I get the error "Limited or no Connection". This occurs with Pc's running VISTA, and Macs?
The only resolution I have found is to RESET the hub. Then all devices attach fine. If I disable wireless on my portable and re-enable it, it also fails. Once in a failed state its only resolution is to RESET.
Can advice?

you might want to change the wireless settings of the hub to 802.11 b/g to see if this makes a difference, also can try change the wireless channel as well to see if that makes a difference

Newbee help needed

Please help a newbee to get things going. I've just installed 10g Xe on my home pc with windows XP. I can start and stop the database but cannot locate the environment files. Also new to oracle installation on windows, therefore not familiar with the file structure. Is there a location with this info? Also cannot locate the user scott on the db. Has the schema been removed from 10g?

Scott's fired. The schema you can use is HR but you probably need to unlock it first. What environment files are you talking about?

Newbee - too much brightness

Hi,
I'm a newbee on those kind of machines (sorry, was on ***** called Pc) and recently have bought a IMac Intel 24".
I wonder how to adjust / set the brightness on the display because too too bright. The brightness is on mini but need to set it lower.
I have read some topics (but I'm learning Mac) and seem to launch the spyder software. Is that on the Imac or have to buy it ?
Is there any simpler way or program on IMac to do that ?

i will try getting a new battery.
i can't just pull the pull every time because just turning it off from the button makes my mac act funny on start up the res on my screen goes out of wack, the cd drive won't read it just keeps spining i'll try a hardwear check but i can't start up from the cd drive i hold down "c" at startup but as long as i hold it down it won't startup. it will only start up went i release the "c".

Newbee: can't log in...

Hi All,
I am a newbee to Apex, so please forgive me my ignorance.
I 've installed Apex 3 on my laptop, WinXP, and migrated to Oracle 11GR1.
Installation went fine (I think), I unlocked users ANONYMOUS, FLOW_FILES and FLOW_03000.
I did not copy the images directory.
I do not have a dads.conf file.
When I type
www:127.0.0.1:8080/apex I do get a logon screen and same goes for
http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/apex_admin, I get the Administration Services Logon Screen. I do seen the oracle logo, so the server can find my pictures, I guess.
But I don't know the username password I have to use there. The password I gave installation doesnot work with the user Administrator.
Are there any users created during install, and where can I find those??
I do not have a dads.conf file. As a matter of fact, I don't find any \ohs\modplsql directory on my machine.
Any clues what I am doing wrong and how I can start using Apex? Thanks in advance!

I'll check that later, I uninstalled Oracle (and Apex along with it) for some other issues I was having. I am currently re-installing it.
In the meantime I found out that passwords are case sensitive in 11g, unlike the other versions of Oracle. I guess that's the reason of my problem....

OA Framework newbee - Need suggestions/advice for a new project

Dear All,
We are starting up a new "Online Forms" project which aims to move all the offline paper based forms to online forms with online approvals etc.
We are still new to OA, hence looking for tips from the gurus out here.
We have various forms (upto 50 forms) e.g. Request for an Employment Letter, Request for Car Loan, Request for a salary bank transfer , in which the employee fills out certain fields specific to that request and submits the request. The request then goes for approval.
I have gone through the OA dev guide which states that the structure should be :
schema/server - EO
server - VO, AM
webui - Controller
lov/schema/server - LOV related EO
lov/webui - LOV related controller
1 Should we further segregate everything based on the form ?
E.g. For car loan request the EO s will go to : schema/server/carloan
and For salary bank transfer : schema/server/bnktransfer
and The common EO s would go to : schema/server/common
2 If we have some helper classes, where would these go ? under util/schema ?
3 How many application modules should be created for such an implementation. Should we have one AM per form ? (With LOVs having their dedicated AM?)
Will appreciate if someone can guide us on the above questions. It would be helpful to set up the right base !

Peddi, thank you for the detailed stucture. Did you mean that we must put in all the pages and their CO s in the same package ? There are going to be so many forms, with each form having atmost 5 pages - is there any harm creating one package per form ? (Ofcourse beneath the standard structure. E.g. CO's would be in webui, then would be further classified based on the form, so webui/carloan, webui/empletter and then there would be webui/common - for all the common stuff)
We are also thinking in terms of one AM per form. The forms are simple -
Page 1 - are you submitting for yourself or another employee
Page 2- The form itself - The forms may display some employee information etc from APPS. (Grade, salary, exisitng loans etc)
Page 3 - Review or confirmation page with a submit button.

Not understanding the meaning of the exception, I decided to run the file under the development environment. It generates an exception at:

telling me:
access denied (java.net.SocketPermission home-ilan resolve)
Since this is my first attempt, I don't have any experience to know what could be wrong.
In the long run, I want to have an application on the client end access a database on the server end. I want to server to do the query and return the results to the client. (The tutorial shows an applet, but that I will replace with an application so as to avoid security problems.)
Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?

It looks like a combination of problems here.

It's a bit long, but very useful.
I can also see you use eclipse. Did you try the "ready to use" rmi examples
of the RMI Plugin for Eclipse (http://www.genady.net/rmi/v20/) ?
Your first problem seems to be an incorrectly defined codebase.
It looks like you are trying to use the HTTP protocol to access a windows share.
You should use the file:/ protocol for such shares.
The second problem looks like a security policy problem (ejp - correct me again if I'm wrong...) Since you've installed a security manager you should define a security policy. See the RMI tutorial link (the last step of tutorial) for more info.

This is my first post, but I have been following this forum for a while and you have all been very helpful in my MacEducation. I have a MBP17 10.6.8 w/6GB ram from '08. I need to upgrade my HD from 200GB. I would like to go as big as I can and would appreciate any experiance you've had. Could I go 750GB or 500 GB @ 7200 rpm. Hi Johnny,
Yes you can do the 750 or 500, 5400 or 7200. Just make sure it is 2.5" SATA and 12.5mm high or less (there is at least one HD out there that is 15mm high and will not work).
Lion: I don't know that it matters much either way, just don't do them at the same time. That way, if there are issues, you have a much better chance of troubleshooting one major change instead of two.
