Ok, I think my USB port is failing...

Hi, I now have my (black) macbook for almost a year, it's the very first generation of macbooks (512 mb ram, 80 gb hard drive etc...). I have been really pleased with it but I think that my two USB ports don't give any power (ie: I can't charge my iPod in it, even if I'm on AC power). Should I call Apple Care? I bought an extended warranty at my local shop for another 2 years. If the computer gets faulty, they will give me one new... maybe not?
Or maybe, that's just normal?

Run your hardware tester and reset your SMC.

They won't give you a new computer. You will need to send it in, or take it to an Apple Store.

  • Z87-G65 power issue with usb(port reset failed)

    All,
I'm having an issue with my motherboard and wanted to see if anyone had suggestions.  In windows 8.1 if I have my webcam or external hard drive plugged in USB.  I get this error the the USB device is not recognized and the port reset failed(code 43).  I noticed when I turn on the PC and it's booting the light on the webcam and hard drive flash like it's not drawing enough power to stay on.  The boot sticks at 9c on the screen and I have to reset.  When windows boots they turn off.    Since it's before windows boots I think this is either a MB issue or a power supply issue.  I have a corsair 750 watt power supply so plenty of power.  Any ideas?

  • Installing SP2 onto my Satellite Pro L10 causes the USB ports to fail

I've just installed XP SP2 onto my L10 and the USB ports no longer work.
There are no errors in Device Manager, devices in the USB ports are not recognised.
I've removed SP2 and they're the USB ports are working again.
    Model #: PSL15E-00H018EN
    Any suggesttions? Thanks in advance.

You should simply delete the USB controller from the device manager.
After the new reboot the USB ports should works again!

  • Satellite C50-A-138 - All USB ports have failed

    Hi
I am having a major issue with my Satellite C50-A-138.
The card reader has never worked, and one by one the USB ports have one by one stopped working.
I can connect my phone to all of them, and it will charge.
But I can't plug any device into the ports and have the laptop recognise them at all.
    So far I have tried the following;
    Disabling and enabling each port
    Uninstalling and reinstalling
    Checking for updates
    Refreshing windows 8
    Reinstalling windows 8
    Regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\UsbFlags
    Regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\usbhub
    Downloading hotfix
Is there anything else that I can do to make them work again?

    >...I did a full reinstall without settings
What do you mean without settings?
Anyway, try please to install some drive manually just to see if this will help.

  • Will power interruptions cause iMac usb ports to fail?

When electrical power is disrupted and subsequently restored can iMac on board USB ports be damaged to the point of total failure? If so, how can these
ports be properly protected? Thanks for any advice.

APC is the big name. You can find them at all sorts of places. They make quite a few models.  If you live someplace where power failure is common it's probably best to shut down before leaving but assuming your home, if your battery backup is good for 10-20min tha'ts plenty of time to shut down. I have my computer and external drives on battery backup. My second monitor, printer and such are simply on surge protector circuits. Most UPS units have some plugs that are just surge and other plugs that include battery backup. You will want to find out how many watts your computer uses and any other peripherals you use to guage which battery backup system you need to provide as many minutes of backup as you want.

  • After waking from sleep my imac thinks its usb ports are 1.1

My eyetv reports it needs usb 2.0 and works fine after a reboot. any ideas

This has been a problem with the Mini Cruzer for a long time. The only solution is to eject the drive before letting your Mac sleep, or purchasing a different drive. The last I read on this subject was that the Mini Cruzer does not recognize the Mac sleep settings properly and that San disk has no plans to resolve the issue.

  • All my usb ports suddenly failed. Any easy fix?

I'm not able to go to the Apple Store for repair. Anyone encounter this? What was the solution?
    thanks

No problem. By the way, I linked to the article on resetting the SMC in my above post.

  • HP 6730s - Boot & USB ports problems

    Hi
I'm having some problems with my HP6730s.
    1. First problem I noticed is that if I keep it running for a long period of time, 2 UBS ports (right side, near DVD drive) stop working and Windows keeps informing me about malfunctioning devices if I have any device connected to those ports. Since I usually have  a wireless receiver for my Logitech connected to one of those ports, I can't get rid of the error not even if I disconnect it. The only thing that works is to turn off the laptop and remove the power cable for 30-60 minutes. This makes me think those USB ports don't get enough power.
    2. I seem to be having problems when I'm trying to boot up using a Linux CD/DVD/USB. I insert the media I wan't to boot up from and I can see the DVD Drive/USB led flickering and then it stops. The Caps led starts flickering and that's it. I have to force shut down so that I can boot up again. At first I thought that it's the media I'm trying to boot up from or the BIOS settings but then I noticed that sometimes it boots up and sometimes it doesn't. I manage to boot up Ubuntu CD after 10 tryouts. openSUSE(11.xx)(the distro I need & use) is very problematic. LiveCDs won't boot up and install DVDs will simply hang on boot. If by any chance I manage to boot it up it pops out a error message and it forces me into failsafe boot/install. I also managed to install openSUSE once but it failed to auto configure videocard so I got stuck in text mode. Trying to manually install ATI drivers failed because it was unable to detect the video card. Same thing happened in Windows when I tried to upgrade the driver using the one on AMD website.
I bought the laptop in January 2009 and in December 2010 I replaced the battery.
I'm now running Windows 7 Professionas SP1 x64 up to date  Also, HP Tools is up to date and I used to test the laptop for hardware issues and nothing was found. I also tested the video card and everything seamd to be fine.

I found out what's causing this but not how to fix it. I can only prevent it.
It seams that if you keep the device plugged in too much, those ports won't get enough power.
The best way to prevent this is to remove the battery when you keep the device plugged in and to also remove it when you turn it off.
I noticed this won't happen if I keep the device plugged in and ON for a long period of time but only if I keep it plugged in when turned off and if I also keep the battery inside.
But this will only fix the USB problem, not the Linux boot one.
What is you problem, exactly? Also, have you found a solution?

  • USB port issues and unable to reset

I'd personally see a doctor about this... wait, what?    God damn it!

Have just in the last few days noticed an issue where singstar was not recognising my USB microphones and noted also that controllers were not being charged from the dual USB ports on my PS3 SuperSlim. Otherwise the system was operating fine until I tried to reset to defaults that is. Sadly now following taking these steps I can't progress beyond the select the PS button on your wired controller which of course doesnt work because the USB ports have failed.  Seems a bit odd that the system is now bricked with only a fairly innocuous fault. Any suggestions to get me operating again with or without operating USB ports will be gratefully received.

  • USB ports stopped working on new MBP

I have a Retina MBP, 2.6 ghz (OS 10.8.5) and a 2 TB Seagate GoFlex external drive (maybe 2 years old) which I use occasionally for big video projects.  The Seagate will often eject itself if it is not active for a period of time and I get the message that the drive was improperly disconnected.  I've tried setting the preferences to keep it from going to sleep but that hasn't helped.  Then last night I set it up to transfer 40 gig of data from another drive connected via Thunderbolt.  In the morning I found the usual improperly disconnected message but when I went to reconnect, I could not get the drive to mount.  (The thunderbold drive was still mounted.)  I tried both USB ports and then tried turning the power off and then on.  The drive started making clicking sounds and would not mount.  I feared major drive failure, even though this drive has only been used a couple times per month at best.  But then I discovered that nothing would mount through the USB ports.  So I rebooted and now everything works as it should and the Seagate drive mounts just fine.  So which of the following is likely true?
    A.  The drive is failing and caused the USB ports to go wacky.
    B.  The USB ports are failing and cause the drive to go wacky.  (I haven't noticed a problem with any other drive connected with USB.)
    C.  This was a software quirk of some kind and I shouldn't worry.
Will try again tonight to see if it happens again.

You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.  Plus you have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.

  • K7N2G-ILSR: Firewire and all but 2 usb ports are gone.

I have the MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard. When I first got it I noticed in my bios I had the option to enable/disable my IEEE 1394 ports. After having problems with my video card I updated my bios to v1.7 and since then I've lost that option all together and have noticed that only 2 of my USB ports work and the firewire ports are not detected.
Is this a known bug? I'm going to try and roll the bios back to v1.4 and see if that restores them. If that doesn't work any suggestions?
Also on occation my USB ports will fail to be started by windows and/or linux.

  • I have a macbook pro4.1 and the sound chip in it failed. My speakers and microphone no longer work. Does anyone know of an external speaker and microphone set that plugs into the USB port so I can continue to use both of these functions?

I have a macbook pro4.1 and the sound chip in it failed. My speakers and microphone no longer work. Does anyone know of an external speaker and microphone set that plugs into the USB port so I can continue to use both of these functions and not have to pay to have the entire main board replaced. Preferably something under $100.

I don't think you're likely to find a set of external speakers that come with a microphone and plug directly into a USB port. There are USB audio cards that look like tiny flash drives but have microphone and headphone ports in them, to which you can connect a typical two-plug Windows PC headset with a microphone, or else you can connect external speakers and a stand-alone microphone. Those adapters typically cost under $10. I don't know anything about the quality of sound that can be expected from them.
I have a Griffin iMic, which is much the same idea but larger, a bit more expensive (retail~$40), and perhaps delivers somewhat better sound quality (I hope so, but I don't know because I've never had occasion to try one of the little ones).

  • Clicking iMac and Failing USB Ports

Hey. I've had my new iMac G5, 18.ghz for about a month now. I'm new to abll ebut I love it until a few days ago. My iMac every few minutes or so makes a click and then just keeps going. It's a sound from the computer and not the speakers. Also yesterday my lowest USB port at the back of my computer failed and nothhing i plugged into it would work. I ran a hardware test and everything came back saing it was fine. I restarted and all my USB ports were not working! I resttarted again and now everything is fine. Has anyone else had hte same problem?

The keyboard USB port is USB not USB 2 and doesn't have a lot of power. The back ports are USB 2.0 and have more power.
If the USB ports are drawing too much current they will shutdown and there should be a note in the log telling you so.
Open the 'Utilities' folder and then run Console and look at the time it happened and see if its there or not.
If they shut down restarting is probably resetting them.
Well if its the side opposite the CD slot then I'd think hard drive. Run disk utility and see what it says under 'SMART status' It should say 'Verified'
Does it lag when its making the 'Click'? and is it aloud click or more like regular drive activity all of a sudden?
as StevenC said its probably a good idea to back up any data you have.

Hey, just bought an iPhone 3GS off a friend an am looking to sync it to iTunes The version is 4.3.3. Is this normal ?. The device fails to appear in Itunes however. I have checked my USB ports under device manager and there is an 'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller'. Does this mean all my ports are 2.0? When I connect my device it says ' This device Can perform faster' if connected to a USB port. Need Advice.
    Thanks

Minimum requirements for the iPhone 3GS for Windows for USB is 2.0.

Since yours says, "enhanced" .. it should be 2.0
Try disabling a/v software and turning off the Firewall then sync.
    Disable antivirus software
Turn Windows Firewall on or off
