Ok, let's think down the road a bit...

Let's say it's Dec 31 or Jan 01. GN has been released. People have their handsets. The forums are burning up with posts from people about this or that not working. The first batch of patches are en route to handsets.
What is the roadmap to release ICS (or its variant) to all the older Droid handests? Anyone want to speculate? Will people be rooting and booting left and right to load the most vanilla experience they can and get their handsets clear of their carrier's bloatware?
Anyone want to look in their crystal ball and make a prediction?
(Hoping this gives people something to discuss other than the ad naseum "Where is the GN already???" threads.

Oh...  I didn't think of that, its getting to the point that so many are referencing a device by 2 letters, between that and the OS being abbreviated I am having trouble keeping up with what means what..
My mistake...

"Everyone" looking forward to the Nexus like they were the Thunderbolt and Bionic? Then, what? The big letdown.
Up until about 6 months ago, I couldn't have imagined NOT being interested in the Nexus, or whatever next "latest and greatest" is coming soon from Android.
Not anymore.
ICS might change that, but for some reason (bloat, OEM skins, bad apps, etc.), I doubt it. Not interested in rooting and I just noticed that word wasn't edited in the OP's
post, whatever that means.
I agree, I really don't see what the big deal is with the Nexus anyway, it don't seem to have anything really different from all the others, the Bionic was a flop and the razr did not have to be out long before users started complaining about the battery life and the manufacture rumors of a new revised version of the phone...
Can someone get up close to all the ones all hyped over this phone and scream "HAVEN'T YOU LEARNED AFTER SEEING THE IPHONE?" , they are just selling you the same hardware labeled as something different.
So many complained for the iPhone for so long and the deveice was released and sales was not major and the one that did buy them mostly returned them..  I give it a week or two and another device will hit that would be next big crave and the Nexus will be tossed out to dry..   Talking about money to BURN

  • I'm thinking about purchasing a 21.5" iMac.  The base model comes with 8GB of RAM, and the RAM is not user-upgradeable down the road.  Is 8GB enough memory or should I upgrade to 16GB?

I'm thinking about getting a 21.5" iMac which comes with 8GB of RAM.  Unfortunately, the RAM is not user-upgradeable.  Do you think 8GB is enough memory, or should I upgrade to 16GB?  Besides internet surfing and email, I like to play flash games and listen to internet radio.  Occasionally, I might want to stream a movie.  I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.

For what you list, 8GB should be adequate. I ran with 4GB without any issue for over a year in my iMac i7 before I added RAM, primarily for running Win 7 via Bootcamp.
The tasks that need a lot of RAM are typically video editing/production, heavy-duty photo manipulation (not iPhoto or PS Elements), and professional page layout like Adobe Creative Suite. If you think that, down the road, you may want to delve into those fileds with this computer, by all means get the extra RAM.
I like to play flash games
I didn't try a lot of Flash games while I still had 4GB RAM but those I tried ran without issue and without causing a non-trivial number of page-outs

  • Trying to get DSL internet. Verizon central office just down the Road less then 1 mile away.

I am trying to get service to my home and its a bit frustrating when the county physical address does not match with any other maps to try and get service. (its not just you). My property has 2 addresses associated with it
    {edited for privacy}
    and {edited for privacy}
There is a central office just down the Road with your logo on it (less then 1 mile when traveling on a Road with power/phone lines)
My neighbors address is {edited for privacy} if that is easier to find
    Our property is on the intersection for {edited for privacy}
    The Central office is RONETXXA
when i try to play around with the address trying to find one that is (somewhat close to my address to use as a reference point)
What seems to be the case is so far i have found that i can get Phone service and direct TV through Verizon.
Is this due to the distance the system thinks i am from the Central office or is it just that you do not provide Internet other then wireless even though there is a Central office and phone lines already set up in the area and to my 2 houses.
Also last year we got all the way too getting a phone rep who told us that we would be getting a call from engineering to look into our problem...... that never happened.
I would be most appreciative if you could please look into this.
If there is any more information you need to better understand my situation please do let me know and i will do what i can to provide it.

after the holidays i will again call customer support and hopefully i find them more equipped then the check for service plug in i also have access too and no way of dealing with difficult questions.
Is there perhaps a more equipped customer support number that i can call to save me time/effort because my issue is not just a simple plug and check issue.
    As it seems again its
    A. the system is not showing my adress distance correctly
    B. the central office is not providing dsl internet even though the lines are already set up. (that kinda seems odd to me)

  • Moved 0.8 miles down the road, internet speed appa...

Although I lived in a village Speedtest.net would report 5 Mbps with ~50ms latency and I could get download speeds of 700KB/s in practice too. After moving 0.8 miles to the next village down I get almost 100ms ping and 0.7Mbps download.
I tried connecting via LAN to make sure it wasn't exclusively a WiFi problem. I hooked the router into the test socket. I tried using an older router I had (BTHomeHub2), all with no improvement.

    Hi pucilowski,
As john46 has said, you will stand a much better chance of getting help on here than you will from India.
In addition to the information requested by john46 to help you, I would make the following points.
When you say "down the road" do you mean further from the exchange ?
Do both villages share the same green street cabinet ?  If you don't know, or if you have taken your old number with you, you can get a good indication by entering phone numbers for each village here :- https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html.
It does not mean the phone line follows the most direct route.
The quality of the line could be different up to the properties and within them.
The CL's and mods on here have a great record for solving problems.

  • 24P, cinema tools,..asking for trouble down the road?

A project was shot using 24p.
Removed frames using Cinema Tools and it did a better job than FCP did. Remove Advance Pulldown wouldn't pull out the correct frame. (Or I'm leaving some important step out.)
Now the project is ready to edit in 23.98 fps.
But what happens if I need to re-digitize the media with the project being offline down the road? I noticed the time-code Media Start is a little different. Will my sequence be off by a few frames and be out of sync?
Isn't 24pAdvanced better since you can bypass the step through Cinema Tools?
    Thanks for any help.

When you strip pulldown via Cinema Tools, it rewrites the file to 24 fps timecode, so recapturing isn't possible, in my experience, when the tape media is 29.97 timecode.
If you're working offline/online, yes, 24pA is better because when FCP strips the pulldown, the file retains the 29.97 fps timecode. That is, frames, and those timecode numbers, are simply skipped.
I hope you have a copy of the FCP project file back when it was still 29.97 fps cause you'll might need that clip info when you have to recapture. Though I suppose a logging sheet that corresponds exactly to your clips could suffice...

  • FIX IT! Priorities for RIMM - let's trim down the overwhelming confusion to top priorities here

Hey guys and gals - obviously RIMM has it's hands full, how about guiding them to the most important stuff and stop nit-picking and dissing for now. It's getting overwhelming and confusing.Let's help here instead of dissing them - they have a reputation they are struggling to compete for and this is the most awesome platform I have imagined. OBVIOUSLY it was released half baked but to me that's great, it is IN MY HANDS and we can all help develop this thing. Let's focus on priority areas that make it NON-functional and keep the list to a minimum. Remember, everyone was tired of waiting and had to have it NOW so you got what you asked for stop whining. TO me it should be called a WorkBook and let the toy seekers go Ipad. RIMM focus on what you built your rep on and do best - BUSINESS and stop trying to get a piece of the consumer pie that everyone else is feasting on.
Here are my 2 biggies -
    1) RELIABLE NON BUGGY WEB BROWSING most annoying is the browser mode where the "back" button wont work, it only responds to SOME link touches but not others, and the refresh button does NOT refresh, along with other browser anomalies that are annoying, various freezes crashes etc, because after all isn't browsing the bare minimum functionality of this thing? Having to close the browser and start all over because of a freeze or a crash is about the highest impediment to productivity I can think of.
2)The bridge files app that show nothing but directories, shows no files, FREEZES if you try to drill into one. BIG DEAL because we want the stuff that's already on our phones!
I will stop there although I have a huge laundry list like everyone else - do this stuff FIRST! (please)
RIMM can't be everywhere at once let's help them focus, after all we all want this thing to become what we expected ASAP and it certainly has that potential! The more overwhelmed they are the less they can get done in a short period of time. The more RIMM goes down the tubes, the more we all suffer so please encourage and hlep those who are discouraged and ready to return the thing. THe bigger the communit y, and the more successful RIMM is the more we ALL benefit.
Have I got your attention RIMM?  Perhaps you can just look at this one thread and put the rest on the back burner.
Now, can everyone contribute just your top two or three items that make you feel you are not getting the functionality you expected? Things that make you wonder if you should have even bought this thing? Lets get those fixed ASAP.

    Similar issues here.

  • In version 31.3 the arrow that let me pull down the recipient list to an email I'm composing has gone. It's impossible to check if all are listed.

It's difficult to check whether I've entered all of several intended recipients of an email I'm composing. I can scroll up and down, but I can't see the entire list to check for inclusions and duplicates. Please reinstate the pull-down arrow!

Hover your cursor over the addresses. Hopefully a pop-up tooltip thingy will appear listing the addressees.
It's become difficult to see, but if you move the cursor about slowly in the grey area between the addresses and the message text window, you should be able to find the handle that lets you resize the addressing area and thereby see more addresses. Mine reveals its presence by changing to a slightly paler shade of grey.
I do detest the near-zero discoverability in modern GUI design. We seem to be slavishly copying of all the worst features of the Google UI. :-(

Got it! Thanks so much. A little more detail for the benefit of others: you'll find the addressing area resize handle immediately above the white text area, in the narrow part of the grey area below all of the address field, subject line, scroll boxes and icons.

  • Very poor cell coverage, and the tower is reported a few miles down the road

Voice calls, even with 3 bars, whether it shows 1x or 3G, on the iPhone4S are worthless. The calls will drop out, not might. Other parties can't hear me when they do connect. I contacted VZ while at work, but they want me to t-shoot from home (ho hum...and do what? I can't update roaming, although I question I'm trying to hit a roaming tower from home), the call will fail. What does it take to have VZ do a signal strength test in my area and determine what can be done? I certainly can't call from home, and there is no live chat available, even though it's during the reported available times. I can't say AT&T is much better, but if any friends ever show up with an AT&T phone, I'll sure closely examine their service.

    ZIP = 95060
x-street closest to my residence = Empire Grade Road and Conifer Lane.
Info I find on line about cell tower placement puts one at about 12600 Empire Grade Rd, which is only a few miles from me.
I updated roaming capability this morning while in an area of acceptable signal, but I don't know that roaming matters when I am hitting (albeit poorly) a VZ tower nearby.
I am in the mountains, but on the top ridge line, not in a canyon.
All I ask is a signal strength assessment in this immediate area; I'm sure other users cannot use their phones, either.

  • Safari will not let me scroll down the page , it defaults to the top, this seems to have started after moving to Maverick.

I recenty upgraded to Maverick, I now find Safari has become erratic , it will not allow me to scroll down on a page it keeps defaulting back to the top , I do not have the same problemc with FireFox, only Safari.
I have tried restarting with a holding down option command PR and it did not help.
    Thoughts ?

    Hey Snozdrop-
Thanks for the reply. I did what you said. And the Time Warner page AND the dnsrsearch.com disappeared. However, now I still do not get Safari when I touch the Safari icon. Instead, it goes to a plain white page with an Apple icon, a Disney icon and ESPN icon and a Yahoo icon in a straight row across the top (under time and such and under a shaded out bar that says "Search or enter an address".) If I touch the search bar it DOES give me a keyboard below. and I can search now, but nowhere does it say that I am on Safari. (I believe there was a shaded out word google  on the grey bar, but not sure) AND -- why do those 4 icons appear in a row left to right on a blank white page when I click the Safari button? It really is truly bizarre. Never did that before. It went to Safari, lol.
I look forward to any more info you can provide. And THANK you for the help you have provided so far.

  • Can you lock out the Ipad while it is traveling down the road?

I would like to put an Ipad in my trucks, but I can't trust the drivers to not use it while they are driving. Is there a way to lock out the Ipad while the vehicle is moving?

Perhaps a Workstation Associated app that just pushed an invalid value for the
    GINA.DLL
Either Remote Regedit or another Force-Run app could restore this to a correct
    value.
Needs testing to make sure you can fix what you break, but this would lead
    everything intact.

  • Socket 1366 chipsets - what's coming down the road?

    Hi everyone.
I'm probably going to build a new rig in about 6 months to a year, and I intend to use the Socket 1366 architecture. However, one thing I have noticed at the moment is the lack of reasonably priced boards for that architecture. In short, the only boards available for that are ones with the Intel X58 chipset and they're mostly in the €250+ price range.
I ask because up to now it has been my preference to use an upper-midrange board with a high end processor - when I rebuilt my current machine about 2 years ago, I paired a K8N Neo4F Ultra with an Opteron 180 processor which cost a multiple of that (S939 Athlon 64 X2s were all gone).
Had I upgraded during the Core2Duo/Socket 775 era I would most likely have done the same thing.
The reason for that is that not only do I not see the value of high end (and high cost) boards where a midrange board is compatible with the same processor, as my Neo4F and presumably modern comparable boards at the midrange price point all have everything I need. In addition my Neo4F also has lots more of the things that I want, namely PCI expansion slots for adding cards, and less of the things I don't, like multiple PCIx16 slots for Quad-SLi and stuff like that, as I don't use multiple GPUs. Indeed, the new archictecture with it's hard TDP limits and integrated memory controller are going to limit the capability to overclock the CPU, so that's another 'use' for such a board gone.
However, from what I've read, Intel is going to segment it's desktop market with So1366 being at the high-desktop end, something like Socket 1160 at the midrange and something else again for high end servers. Can it therefore be taken that there will be no midrange boards for LGA1366?

Basically your waiting for socket 1156/1160 this is the mainstream Nehalem product that will be based on the P55 chipset.  As for when you are looking probably end of Q3 this year or more likley Q4.

  • Exporting the HTML and editing it down the road?

Hi- I have a client who want a very simple website built.  He wants me to give him the HTML code when I'm done so he can ultimately do the edits.  Is the code that Muse exports clean and easily to view and understand in Dreamweaver?  I'd love to build it in Muse, but wondering if I should instead code it by hand so what I give him is not funky.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

The HTML generated by Muse is not intended to be edited further.
An experienced designer could edit it with some pain but if a client is asking you do design the site, they are probably not experienced enough to understand the messy HTML made by Muse.

  • Updating Storage for FCSrvr Down The Road

    Hi,
we are seriously considering investing in FCSrvr in the near future and my sense from reading the manuals and perusing this and other forums is that it will serve our immediate and medium-term needs well. (I work for an content creation startup with 4 FCP systems currently in sneakernet ****.)
I am trying to ascertain how FCSrvr would handle a change in the physical storage media that it references for its devices. In other words, if I start off with, say, a regular SATA hard drive (or RAIDed SATA set) to store my primary representation files and later decide to update to an external RAID for that data, how big of a pain is this? Is it simply a matter of naming the new storage medium the same as the old one and copying all FCSrvr files onto it? Is FCSrvr simply looking at the network path (/Volumes/DriveName/FolderName) or is it identifying these media differently somehow?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Henrik Boes

The system we have running works well for us. We have an xraid attached to FCSvr. It's where all our commonly used files live. We've filled up our xraid. No more room. So we bought a drobo, connected it to the server, and now we have another 3 or so TB.
I've archived all our less used stuff off to the drobo, freed up room on our fast drives, and all the archived stuff is still searchable and easy to recall. The drobo ran us about $1400 CDN, so as we grow, we can add more without the huge expense of fast arrays.
